The Woodlands Township Fire Department reminds all residents that The Woodlands Covenants strictly prohibit the sale or use of fireworks and sparklers of any kind in The Woodlands neighborhoods and parks. The Woodlands is situated in a beautiful forest, and with dry weather conditions and so many trees, one errant spark could severely damage our hometown. Do not put your own property and safety, or that of your friends and neighbors, at risk. Please see page 24 for information on the professional fireworks show scheduled for July 4.

Is the appearance of your home diminished by algae and mildew?
Suggestions for removing algae and mildew from your home:
• Use a solution of 10 parts water to one part common bleach (strength of mixture can be increased for removal of heavy growth). Be sure to wet foundation plantings first and rinse everything in clean water when done to protect plants from the bleach. Wear gloves and be careful not to come in contact with bleach. Please be aware that high concentrations of bleach may discolor your paint.
• Wipe or scrub with detergent and water.
• There are a number of cleaning products and suggestions for removing these substances from the exterior of the home that can be found and sold at your local home improvement store.
Prevention is always best! Periodic cleaning with a power washer containing water only may help prevent the problem altogether. Remember, mildew removal may reveal the need to repaint your home. If so, please file an application with the Township.

College Park
Happy summer to all from College Park Village Association! Time for vacations and staying well at the same time. We must all be cautious of gatherings in close contact events. Sanitize as much as possible. Refer to our College Park website for upcoming events. Our Spring Poolooza was our big event until the fall when we will have fun with the annual SPOOKTACULAR in October. Time has been going so fast this year, so enjoy every minute you can with family and friends. Stay cool and calm, especially in our increased traffic. One correction from April’s article: Our monthly College Park meeting is at 6 p.m., the third Monday of each month at the Township building.

Grogan's Mill
Thanks to residents supporting The Woodlands Farmer’s Market, the Grogan’s Mill Village Association is able to support scholarships, schools, community programs, the Interfaith Food Pantry and more. We thank you for spending your Saturday mornings with us shopping for produce, honey, meats, crafts, food and more at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. In addition to our regular lineup of vendors, on most Saturdays we have live music
and a food truck. Bring your own bags to save on plastic.
Got batteries? Bring your used alkaline (non-rechargeable) batteries, from your home, workplace, friends and families. You can bring them to the Farmer’s Market where we will hold them until the challenge officially begins. Our village association could win up to $1,000, which we generally use to support schools and student scholarships in Grogan’s Mill.
In May, The Woodlands Farmer’s Market celebrated mothers with a flower giveaway. In June, the market celebrates dads with other free samples. Mark your calendars for July 2, 2022, at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market. We are planning a fun special event to celebrate the 4th of July. Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ WoodlandsFarmersMarket to stay up-to-date with the details.
If you are not a subscriber to our newsletter, you are missing out on important and interesting information about our community. We publish about twice each month, so we won’t fill up your inbox. Go to www. grogansmill.org/newsand-events or scan this QR code to sign up. We also have a Facebook page that has good information about our community as well, www.facebook.com/ GrogansMillVillageAssociation.
Indian Springs
Each year, the Indian Springs Village Board awards scholarships to high school students who are graduating and planning to go to college. The students need to meet rigorous scholastic and community service standards. We received many incredible applications and were reminded of the intelligence, persistence and kindness our students possess. The scholarship committee, like most years, had a difficult time selecting our winners. Thanks so much to all students who submitted their applications.
This year we’re excited and pleased to announce that the scholarships will go to five outstanding graduating seniors: Anna Orr, Katherine Muller and Niah Patel who attend The Woodlands High School, as well as Jason Sharer and William Kaiser who attend College Park High School.
Anna Orr is dedicated to giving back to The Woodlands through the National Charity League and her varsity basketball and soccer team. Some of her favorite charities are Meals on Wheels, the Hand Me Up Shop and the Interfaith Food Bank. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, she maintained an impressive GPA while playing varsity soccer and basketball.

and has seen the direct impact her charitable hours have contributed to the community. Among her favorites were making bags for breast cancer patients, volunteering at The Woodlands Arts Festival and tending and harvesting fruits and vegetables for elderly in need. She was highly recommended by her counselor due to her drive to maintain a rigorous class and work schedule while making time to give back to the community.
Niah Patel volunteered at The Houston Methodist Hospital in The Woodlands through the Junior Volunteer Program. Her service was during 2020 and 2021 at the height of the pandemic. As a mentor in the program, she led a team of volunteers to coordinate staff appreciation events to boost morale during this unprecedented time. She also visited patients, refilled supplies, assisted nursing staff and managed the information desk. In addition to her admirable work at the hospital, she also volunteered at the MD Anderson Blood Drives and volunteered for five years as a referee for BEST Robotics Houston.
Jason Sharer completed nearly 1,000 hours of service in our community and beyond through Gulf Coast Mensa, Boy Scouts, National Charity Roundtable, TWCP Interact Club, The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. Most impressively, these charitable contributions were made while maintaining a stellar GPA, working as a tutor, playing varsity sports and participating in several extracurricular activities. His awards, accolades and academic achievements are extensive, but he’s received our scholarship for what he’s given back to our community. His Eagle Scout service project was transitioning the land at Reedy Pond Park into a certified monarch butterfly habitat. In addition, he has volunteered with the Township directly at the 3R Bazaar, Clean Up GreenUp and Taste of the Village. Through Gulf Coast Mensa, he collected and analyzed soil moisture samples to help NASA calibrate the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) satellite through GLOBE.
William Kaiser volunteered hundreds of hours through the Boy Scouts, National Charity Roundtable, NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) program and more. His Eagle Scout Service Project involved reforestation in which he supervised volunteers who planted trees at the Park and Ride on Ashlane. As an Eagle Scout, he also built a playground in our community and worked on a monarch butterfly garden. He was also chosen as the programmer for a startup charity called Scoops for Hoops which raised money for middle school STEM education. This student showed a remarkable commitment to our community while maintaining a high GPA within The Academy of Science and Technology. It is our great honor to congratulate William Kaiser with an ISVA Voluntary Service Award.
We presented these scholarships at our Indian Springs Village Association Board meeting on April 12, 2022. Congratulations, Anna, Kat, Niah, Jason and William!

Panther Creek
Summer is getting into full swing in Panther Creek again. Residents elected several new members to our village association board, and they have opened a review of the association’s activities, policies and budget. Many insightful questions were asked, and new ideas were explored at the April 14, 2022, meeting. We heard a presentation by Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, of The
Woodlands Township Board, on current and upcoming issues of importance to the entire Panther Creek community. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department reported on policing in Panther Creek and answered questions about some recent happenings in our area. Palmer Buck, The Woodlands Fire Chief, talked to us about the danger of lightning strikes which are not uncommon here. John McGowan from Township Parks and Recreation urged all in Panther Creek to participate in the current survey of residents about our ideas and perceived problems. Information about crosswalks and traffic lights was fully explored for us by Andy DuBois from Commissioners Precinct 3. The board voted to again provide funds to the YMCA to help support their varied services which reach deep into our community.
On a sadder note, scheduling conflicts made holding the Spring Flea Market impossible. But thankfully, the Fall Flea Market is still being planned. Also, major price increases for Astros tickets have put our annual trip to watch a game in serious doubt. Our Flag Day community picnic will be held June 18, 2022, at Ridgewood Park. It is open to all residents of Panther Creek and will feature free hot dogs and hamburgers prepared by our own masters of the grill, free flavored snow cones, free access to the pool, and much more including a patriotic flag display. Come meet your neighbors and just have an old-fashioned good time.
Contact us for information about participating in the 4th of July parade festivities and so many more opportunities. The key word there was “participate.” The Panther Creek Village Association is a civic service and community organization. Without you, there is no community. Come to our monthly meetings the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard, at 7 p.m. and learn about YOUR community and the many ways you can contribute your talents and ideas.

Summer Fun at the Boat Houses
Adventure is just a paddle and a splash away, and it all starts here at The Woodlands Township’s boat houses. With a boat house open every day of the week now that school is out (Lakes Edge is closed only Tuesdays, and Riva Row is closed only Wednesdays), the whole family can come out and relax on the restful waters any day from 9 a.m. to last call at 7 p.m. The boat houses offer a wide array of watercrafts from kayaks to paddle boards, and water bikes to swan boats, plus so much more.
Starlight Swan Rides
New for 2022, the Riva Row Boat House is offering after-sunset swan pedal boat rides on the first Friday of each month. Rates will be $35 for a one-hour
ride, which is plenty of time for a leisurely pedal from behind Town Green Park all the way past Waterway Square and back. Come on the right night and you might even get to hear a nearby concert as you pedal down the calm, brightly lit Woodlands Waterway. Each swan seats up to four people or 700 lbs. maximum (whichever comes first) and reservations are required for this after-hours event. Book your romantic – and family friendly – Starlight Swan Ride at www. rivarowboathouse.com/starlight-swan-rides. But hurry: April and May SOLD OUT!

Summer Feature: Stand-Up Paddle Boards
A fun watercraft that we recommend especially during the hot summer months is a stand-up paddle board. While they
By Nathan Torres
can be uncomfortably cold during a windy winter day, they’re perfect for catching a breeze in June and July. Both Lakes Edge and Riva Row offer standard stand-up paddle boards, and Riva Row also offers a unique, elliptical version of the paddle board – it’s like a “pedal” board – and is one of the fastest watercraft on offer. Users have more freedom to move around on a paddle board versus a kayak: stand up, kneel or sit down, and some people even paddle out and lay down for a quick nap on the lake. Some balance is needed to ride, but that adds to the excitement.
Put on your sunscreen, grab a water bottle, and come get some Vitamin D on Lake Woodlands! Be sure to wear clothes that can get wet. Reservations (www.rivarowboathouse.com) are strongly recommended during the busy summer months. Adults must accompany all riders under the age of 11 in the same boat, and those 12-15 need to have an adult on the water with them (but can paddle alone). Summer is kayaking season, so we’ll see you on the water!

VACATION WATCH
Offers Peace of Mind for Your Summer Travel
Summer is here and many of you will be taking time to travel or get away. You can pack a sense of security when you go by utilizing the Vacation Watch program offered by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 4 (in the Village of Creekside Park). With this program, law enforcement deputies will periodically drive by your home, check that it is secure and investigate anything on your property that appears to be suspicious. If anything is found out of the ordinary, you or your emergency contact will be notified. Please note: the frequency of home checks is dependent upon call volume in the area. Active calls for service will take precedence.
To sign up, all you need to do is visit your local law enforcement agency online and complete a questionnaire.

Click on Community Involvement, Services Offered, then on Vacation Watch Request. Choose Creekside from the dropdown menu or call 281-376-3472.
By signing up for Vacation Watch, you can relax knowing that someone is checking your home daily.
It is also important to take additional steps to make sure your home looks lived in while you are away. Below are some additional tips to protect your home.
ü Inform a trusted neighbor of your travel plans and how you can be reached in case of an emergency.
By Susan Martin
ü Leave a key with a trusted neighbor or friend. Ask that the house be checked periodically.
ü Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat or flowerpot.
ü Set your alarm and check locks on all doors and windows.
ü Install a timer on indoor lights so that the house appears occupied. Consider motion sensor lights outside if you do not already have them.
ü If you have not suspended delivery, arrange with a trusted neighbor to pick up newspapers, fliers and packages.
ü Store all valuables out of sight.
ü If you must leave a car in the driveway, remove all valuables including the garage door remote.
ü Ensure that the lawn is maintained in your absence.
ü Limit who you inform of your travel plans, and do not announce your vacation plans on social media.
ü Do not leave ladders and tools accessible for someone to use to gain access to your home.
ü Make sure that trash and recycle cans are put away after pickup.
The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch encourages you to watch out for your neighbors and report suspicious activity immediately.

IT’S HURRICANE SEASON –ARE YOU PREPARED?
Hurricane season begins June 1, 2022. Please take a moment to follow these safety tips.
During and after a hurricane or other disaster you may not have access to electricity, internet, cellular phone connections, pharmacies, water and ice, fuel, food or television. It is critical to assemble an emergency supply kit ahead of time, including food, water and medicines. More information can be found, including a hurricane preparation and checklist and many other resources at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ emergency.
While you’re restocking your emergency supply kit, make sure you also have access to communication tools. Be sure to monitor local weather, along with your favorite media and weather stations and apps. During an emergency, the Township will utilize all methods available, including email, text, website updates, social media and local media outlets.
Go to www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/notifyme to sign up for the weekly Talk of the Township eNewsletter, emergency alerts, press releases, transit alerts and more. The Township has a number of social media outlets that are linked at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/stayinformed.
A full list of emergency resources is available at www.thewoodlandstownship-
tx.gov/emergency, along with updates from local agencies. During an emergency, residents are encouraged to monitor a variety of partner agency websites and tune in to radio station KSTAR 99.7 FM for information specific to The Woodlands. In the event all communication efforts fail, you may go to one of The Woodlands’ eight fire stations for information: www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ firedepartment.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for updates from their county:
• Sign up for AlertMCTX from Montgomery County 9-1-1 by visiting www.mc911.org. Register for Smart911. Go to the App Store or Google Play to sign up for the Montgomery County Community Preparedness App.
• Sign up for emergency notifications from Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network (for Creekside Park) at www.911.org. Important updates are also sent out by Harris County; visit www.readyharris.org and click Sign Up for Alerts.

National Flood Insurance Program
The Gulf Coast region is prone to flooding rains, and most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. To purchase flood insurance or to learn more, call your insurance company or insurance agent, the same person who sells your home or auto insurance. If you need help finding a provider, go to FloodSmart.gov/find or call FEMA’S National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at 877-336-2627. Be sure to plan ahead as there is typically a 30-day waiting period for an NFIP policy to go into effect.

Grow Butterflies
NOT MOSQUITOES
As the summer heat intensifies, we all work a little harder to stay hydrated - insects included. Butterflies suck water from shallow puddles or moist soil. With one simple step, you can turn a plant saucer (that would otherwise attract mosquitoes) into a pollinator oasis while giving mosquitoes the boot.
Plant saucers, bird baths or any wide, shallow dishes at least 12” across will do to create your PolliPool. Add enough sand to the dish so that when it rains, no more than ¼” of water will stand on the surface – too little for mosquitoes to breed in. Mix in some compost or rich soil to give butterflies much-needed minerals. Add some larger pebbles or decorative rocks for visitors to rest on and imbibe without drowning.
As for those unwanted visitors, getting saucers out from under your outdoor pots is the first step to mosquito-proofing your patio. Between hand watering and our summer rains, saucers all too easily create fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes to lay eggs. They also contribute to waterlogged soils that suffocate plant roots. Replace them with pot feet or plant stands that elevate containers and improve drainage –chances are you’ll have more than one saucer left over when you’re done! Repurposing them into PolliPools is a great way to help native butterflies instead of mosquitoes.
