Convention and Visitors Bureau Approves
New Brand Identity: Visit The Woodlands
By Nick Wolda
AsThe Woodlands continues to evolve as a destination for convention and corporate business as well as leisure travel, a new brand identity has been unveiled to have visitors think about The Woodlands in a different way.
“People around the world know The Woodlands as one of the greatest places to live,” said Bruce Rieser, Chairman of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “But we’re also a premier place to visit and hold corporate meetings and conventions.”
“The brand identity process began when The Woodlands CVB began making its presence known at large meeting planner trade shows,” said Nick Wolda, President of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The Woodlands has become a great place to visit, so we needed marketing components that embodied that evolution.”
Brand research conducted in 2016 kicked off the identity conversation and as the Board and staff grew to understand visitor perceptions of The Woodlands, it became clear that the new identity of Visit The Woodlands would need to embody and elevate current perceptions.
During the research, descriptions of The Woodlands as a destination helped narrow down the feelings the new brand identity including logo, name and campaign would need to evoke. People who visited The Woodlands described it using words like “beautiful,” “lush,” “relaxing” and “peaceful.”
With these words in mind, staff worked with an agency to come up with initial brand identity thoughts. Throughout the process, more than 15 different logos were considered, 4 different branding campaigns were presented, 6 different taglines were used in drafts of the new campaign and more than 45 different colors were evaluated.
“We really wanted to showcase The Woodlands’ natural beauty, but also wanted our brand to showcase a dynamic destination,” Chairman Rieser said.
“We chose deep colors and clean lines with taglines and headlines that evoked a sense of excitement to really make The Woodlands’ brand resonate in all advertising, marketing, public relations and sales efforts.”
The promise of luxury, relaxation, safety and beauty are all alive and well in The Woodlands. The 2015 Economic Impact Research conducted by the Office of the Governor of the State of Texas shows that success with over $300 million in visitor spending, 3,940 in tourism employment, and $27,800,000 in state and local tax revenue.
The Woodlands Convention and Visitor Bureau Visitors Services program, in conjunction with The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, surveyed 114,671 visitors in 2016 that came from 998 unique Texas zip codes, 94 countries, and all 50 states and territories. In a visitation and spending survey over four weekends, Cunningham Research Group
found that 78 percent of visitors in The Woodlands Town Center come from outside of The Woodlands.
“The Woodlands is consistently voted one of the top places in the United States to live, so our brand is already well known,” President Wolda said. “Now, it is Visit The Woodlands’ job to showcase how visitors can experience all the reasons locals love this destination.”
The new identity is just one of the ways Visit The Woodlands is accomplishing this goal. With an increased presence at national and international trade show and destination events, a continued focus on digital and innovative technology approaches and more involvement in the industry’s national and international advocacy for travel to Texas, the staff and Board of Directors are excited to see what success will be measured from this year’s initiatives.
For more information about why tourism matters and what Visit The Woodlands is doing for the community, as well as for visitors, go to www.VisitTheWoodlands.com.

Alden Bridge
We have one opening for an at-large Area Representative on the Alden Bridge Village Association board. We work hard serving our residents, and have a lot of fun doing so. Please contact us at info@aldenbridge.org, or attend one of the Alden Bridge Village Association monthly meetings if you’d like to join us. You’ll be glad you did!
Does your business want to reach Alden Bridge residents? We’re also seeking sponsors! If your company would like to participate (it’s tax deductible), we’ll publicize you on the Alden Bridge Village Association website and active Facebook page, as well as in the village association monthly electronic newsletter that reaches about 1,000 Alden Bridge households. Your donation will go into our scholarship fund, which awards village resident scholars. We could even name a scholarship for you. Please reach out to us at info@aldenbridge.org.
The Alden Bridge Village Association June board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, 7 p.m., at the Township, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. All residents are invited to attend, and bring us your questions and concerns. As of this date our speaker has not been scheduled, but watch the village association website and Facebook page for updates.
We’re extremely proud to announce the winners of the Alden Bridge Village Association $1,000 scholarships for 2017! Please congratulate Brittany Belz, Ana Chavez, Maria Moriarty, Nolan Persyn and Hannah Rames. All of these young people are outstanding in scholarship and community involvement. Our scholarship selection process is more difficult every year because there are so many deserving and well-qualified applicants in our village. Thanks to all who submitted applications, and best wishes to all Alden Bridge students graduating this year!
The Alden Bridge Yard of the Month program is in full swing. Please look around
the village and send your nominations for best front yard in Alden Bridge to info@aldenbridge.org no later than Friday, June 23, 2017, and we’ll award on July 1, 2017. Nominate your neighbors (or yourself)! Come on, you know you’ve seen some beautiful front yards in our village.
Save the date — Alden Bridge will again participate in the villages’ trip to Minute Maid Park for the Astros game at 6:10 p.m., Saturday, September 16, 2017. We’re playing the Seattle Mariners that evening. Tickets are $26 each, and the price includes round trip transportation by motor coach from our village center. Contact us at info@aldenbridge.org if you’d like to purchase tickets. We always have a great turnout and a great time!
Join the subscription list for the Alden Bridge Village Association electronic newsletter! It’s distributed monthly to nearly one thousand households. To subscribe, please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org. This information will not be shared and will be used only to disseminate news of our village. Between newsletters, please check our website (www.aldenbridge.org), or like our very active Facebook page for the very latest information.

Cochran’s Crossing
There are multiple ways to keep up to date on village activities. You can receive the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association newsletter, link up to the association Facebook page, or visit the website, www.cochranscrossing.com. A great Cochran’s Crossing event was held last month, the second annual Cochran’s Crossing night at the Astros. The cost of the bus transportation to the game was covered by the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association. There is a chance next month to not just watch a parade go by, but to be in the parade. You can join other Cochran’s Crossing Village residents in The Woodlands Fourth of July parade.
Just give Gary Conwell, the village association secretary, a call at 281-387-6986, and let him know you are coming. It’s fun and good exercise.
Of course, events are only part of the activities available. Monthly meetings provide an opportunity to gain insight on matters of interest to residents. For example, at a recent meeting Stephanie Caroiescu and Kellie Christianson introduced themselves as the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputies that will be the community contacts for Cochran’s Crossing and who will represent the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at board meetings. During the meeting, the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board expressed their appreciation to Deputy Jason Hopper for his years as a representative to Cochran’s Crossing. Also meeting with the board recently was Laura Lea Palmer of The Woodlands Economic Development Partnership. She is Vice President of Business Retention and Expansion, and she is responsible for maintaining existing relationships with businesses in the community, as well as assisting them with their employee recruitment and development, expansion of space as needed, and providing demographic/labor market profiles when appropriate.
Remember, Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board meetings are open to all on the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms. If you are interested in serving on the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board in the future, check with board Secretary Gary Conwell at 281-387-6986. You can also check with him concerning details for marketing of products and services in the

Creekside Park
Hello, Creekside Park Village residents! School summer break has started, and the kids are probably already looking for something to do. Well, your Creekside Park Village Association board has a solution for that. Mark your calendars on June 24, 2017, for the Creekside Park Village Association Annual Picnic and Pool Party at Wendtwoods Pool, located in Timarron. This is a free event for residents, so grab your towels, the kids, sunscreen, a neighbor and come on by. Watch for more details on the village association Facebook Page, www.creeksideparkvillage.com, or on Nextdoor.
In addition to our pools being open for the summer, we have had new neighbors open up in the new Crossroads Square at Creekside Park. It truly is a unique concept. All residents should take the time to visit these establishments that have joined our village.
Please make sure you join us for the Creekside Park monthly village association meetings on the first Tuesday
of the month unless otherwise noted. Have a safe and happy summer!

Grogan’s Mill
The Grogan’s Mill Village Association is seeking to fill a vacancy on its board. The term would run until February 2019.
If you are interested in being considered, please prepare a short overview of your background and qualifications, including a statement about why you would like to participate and any areas that are of particular interest. We would also welcome you to attend at least one of our monthly meetings (third Monday of the month, 6:30 p.m., at the Township). The Grogan’s Mill Village Association board will ask all interested candidates to introduce themselves at its board meeting, probably in June, with a tentative plan to select a candidate at either the June or July village association board meeting.
By the time you read this, the village association will have upgraded its website. Check it out at www.grogansmill.org. Check back often as we are working to make the site landing page for all things Grogan’s Mill. Please send any feedback you have, including the good, the bad and yes, the ugly, to jen@gmva.org.
The village association is pleased to announce its April Yard of the Month winner, Aaron De Smet, in Grogan’s Point. His family has lived in The Woodlands for 10 years.

Fireworks Prohibited in The Woodlands Neighborhoods
The Woodlands Township Fire Department reminds all residents that The Woodlands Covenants strictly prohibit the sale or use of home fireworks and sparklers of any kind in The Woodlands. The Woodlands is situated in a beautiful forest, and with dry weather conditions, one errant spark could severely damage our community. If you feel the holidays are not the same without a firecracker or two, please come out and enjoy The Woodlands Fourth of July Red Hot and Blue Festival at five locations throughout The Woodlands. You will not be disappointed! For more information, please contact The Woodlands Township Fire Department at 281-367-3444.

Indian Springs
The Indian Springs Village Association scholarship committee recognized the service efforts of four high school seniors from Indian Springs to be outstanding and awarded them each $1,000 tuition scholarships. The 2017 winners are Megan Alam, Catherine Seelig, Mohit Talwalker and Katherine
Young. Although their specific types of service varied, each of these young students showed an impressive level of dedication to our community. Our hope is that these young leaders continue to embrace the spirit of volunteerism that earned them this recognition. We are proud of our scholarship recipients and wish them continued success in the future. We would also like to extend congratulations to all of our Indian Springs students graduating this year.
Fourth of July – We hope to see everyone out at the Red, Hot & Blue Festival’s South County Fourth of July Parade. Look for the Indian Springs Village Association float. The parade will begin the 1.3-mile loop around the Market Street area at 9 a.m. This year’s theme is Let Freedom Ring.
Save the Date – Mark your calendars now for the annual Taste of the Village! It will be on October 21, 2017, from noon to 3 p.m., in the Indian Springs Shopping Center. The Taste of the Village is a free, fun, family event. In addition to sampling tasty treats from a variety of food vendors and visiting 40 booths of local businesses and community organizations, families are sure to be entertained.

Panther Creek
You can participate in the community events that help make The Woodlands a real hometown. Volunteer at Panther Creek events. The Panther Creek Village Association is made up of neighbors like you. Some have served for several years and others are new this year. This year, we were honored to have Mindy Reynolds,
Charlie Tunal and Andrew Freeman join our village association board as your area representatives. Villagers help with the GreenUp cleanup and the flea market. Yes, we do some work, but usually have more fun; the rewards and satisfaction that come with participating in your community far outweigh the time and effort put in.
Just around the corner is the Panther Creek Village Association annual Flag Day/Panther Creek Picnic, Saturday, June 17, 2017. Every year, more residents turn out for this free and family-style outing at Ridgewood Park, 4192 Interfaith Way. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and treats will be provided. Bring the kids and their swimsuits as the pool will be open to all. After all the swimming and eating, a wondrous array of choices will be served at the snow cone truck. A brief American flag program and flag information will be presented. Bring any old flags that need to be respectfully retired. Be prepared for a surprise visitor or two that the kids will want pictures with. A round of thanks is due to Denise Judy for her hours of work organizing this event.
With baseball season well underway, join with your Panther Creek neighbors as we hop on custom coaches to take us down to a good old-fashioned baseball outing in Houston. Friday, September 22, 2017, the mighty Astros will host the Los Angeles Angels. Since we expect a victory, there will be a fireworks show afterwards, weather permitting. If you haven’t taken the kids to a big league baseball game yet this is the year, call your area representative. They are listed on the Panther Creek Village Association website listed below. Your $26 fare includes the custom coach transportation to and from the ballpark and admission to the game. Call Kim at 281-292-3477 to reserve your tickets. They go fast!
Remember to be on the lookout for the Panther Creek Panther in The Woodlands Fourth of July parade.
Also, check in on the renovations at our very popular Northshore Park.

STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDING Five Reasons You Should Try It
Stand-up paddle boarding provides a fun and relaxing activity that
almost anyone can
do. People of all body shapes, sizes and ages can participate in this fast-growing watersport and enjoy the following benefits:
Great Exercise:
You can burn around 350 calories from a leisurely one-hour paddling and build good muscle. Continuous paddling will not only increase your muscle strength, but your balance as well.
Reduces Stress:
Environments around water are naturally soothing to the mind and body. Stand-up paddling offers psychological benefits in addition to physical benefits. You may find that your outside worries fade away as you are totally absorbed in your experience.
Allows You to Connect with Nature:
From your standing view, you will be able to see your environment from a completely new perspective. You will explore areas that you may not have
access to from land and connect to the world around you as you glide peacefully across open waters.
Accessible to All:
Stand-up paddle boarding can be done anywhere. Usually thought of as a beach activity, it works just as well on a lake or canal, perfect for landlocked enthusiasts. Paddle boards are lighter than most kayaks and canoes and with the many inflatable options, you can store your board in the trunk of your car, making transportation a breeze.
A Social Activity:
Many organizations are using the growing interest in paddle boarding to create races, fundraisers and group meetups on the water, allowing the community to engage with each other out on the water.
If you are ready to give it try, please visit Riva Row Boat House, 2101 Riva Row, or Lakes Edge Boat House, 1970 Hughes Landing Blvd., both located on Lake Woodlands, to rent a stand-up paddle board. The staff will guide you through the basics of paddling and assist you onto your board. Rentals are $20 for the first hour and $5 per additional hour. All equipment is included.
Want to take it to the next level?
Schedule a private lesson with an American Canoe Association certified instructor, or register for a stand-up paddle board yoga class at Riva Row Boat House. For more information, please call 281-210-3965, or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ rivarowboathouse.

There is a fungus which grows in the soil on and around plant roots that is absolutely essential for plant health. In fact, this fungus is so important that some plant species cannot exist without it. Named mycorrhiza, which literally means root fungus, this organism creates a symbiotic relationship with plants. The amazing properties of this root fungus have prompted scientists to call it Earth’s natural internet.
If one digs into leaf mold, or into really good soil, tiny white filaments resembling spider webs can be seen spreading through the soil or leaves. This is mycorrhiza. Though deceptively small, a teaspoon of good soil can have 8 or 9 feet of the tiny strings.
Mycorrhizal fungi create a symbiotic relationship with plant roots, taking in minerals from the soil and delivering it to the plant, in exchange for sugars produced by the plant. Plant biologists have estimated that 95 percent of the plants investigated are either partially or completely dependent on these fungi — a testament to their importance. Orchids, for instance, are so dependent
on mycorrhiza that even their seeds cannot germinate without it.
Once attached to plant roots, this fungus sends out tiny threads, which extend out much further than the roots can extend. Though they look like plant roots, these white filaments are what absorb nutrients. Since they have a great deal more range than the plant roots themselves and have significantly more surface area, they are able to find and take in significantly more water and nutrients than the plant roots can. Scientists have also discovered that mycorrhiza can store up nitrogen when it is plentiful, and then release it to the plant when there is a lack of nitrogen in the soil. These fungi can also store water, which it releases to the plant in times of drought.
Plants that are not aided by these fungi may not be able to take up important nutrients such as phosphate or iron, which can lead to iron chlorosis or other plant deficiencies. Mycorrhiza can also play a protective role for plants in soils with high heavy metal concentrations, such as acidic or contaminated soils. These fungi are also suited for colonization of barren soils.
Soil-borne diseases, such as take-all patch and brown patch, are also serious problems for plants. Unfortunately, many residents are quick to apply fungicides at first signs of take-all or brown patch. While these fungicides will kill the bad fungi, it will also kill the mycorrhiza. A better method may be to inoculate the lawn with organic material that has high concentrations of mycorrhiza.

Did You Remember to Set Your Alarm?
Did you remember to set your alarm system when you left your home last time?
Setting your alarm helps alert law enforcement and neighbors to a possible crime in progress.
Is your alarm registered?
Both Montgomery County and Harris County require permits for alarms. To receive the permit, complete an agreement and submit it with the fee. To register an alarm, learn the rules for your county and find out about any additional fees possible:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Visit mcsoalarm.mctx.org to fill out an agreement form for a new or previously registered alarm permit, learn about alarm tips and laws, and find out about false alarm prevention. For further questions, call 936-760-5830
• Annual fee: $20
• Five false alarms are allowed with permit per year before being billed, $75 per each false alarm.
• If no permit, a $75 fee per false alarm will be charged; if not paid, a Class C misdemeanor citation may be issued; Justice of the Peace court fines range from $75 to $500; must comply with the Alarm Detail before court fines can be paid.
HARRIS COUNTY, THE VILLAGE OF CREEKSIDE PARK
Visit hcsoalarmpermit.com to fill out an agreement for a permit for a new alarm or renewal and read the alarm laws and rules. For further questions, call 713-755-4600
• Annual fee: $35; renewal fee: $10
• Three false alarms are allowed with permit per year before being billed, $75 per false alarm.
• If no permit, a $75 fee per false alarm will be charged; if not paid, a Class C misdemeanor citation is issued; Justice of the Peace court issues fines.
Do you know how your alarm works and what features your alarm has?
If the answer is “no,” then it’s time for a refresher. To learn more about your alarm, contact your alarm company. False alarms use law enforcement resources that could be used elsewhere. The community goal is to eliminate false alarms. More than 90 percent of alarms in Montgomery and Harris County are false.
Knowing
Here are a few tips when dealing with your alarm:
• Notify your alarm company if you are having problems with your alarm system.
• Make sure that all doors and windows are locked before you turn on your alarm system.
• Check your home for balloons, decorations and pets that could set off a motion sensor.
• Turn off the security system promptly when you enter and exit. Contact your security company if you need more time to avoid false alarms.
• Make sure you understand your keypad system and what you need to do if you make a mistake.
• Update your alarm company contact list.
• Test your alarm system monthly. Be sure you contact your alarm company first, so that an emergency response isn’t dispatched.
• Make sure that everyone with a key to your home knows how to operate your alarm system.
• Advise your alarm company of any renovation work to your home, since dust, paint and fumes may affect the equipment.
• Ask your alarm company about glass breakage alarms for downstairs master bedrooms.

Voted the best source to learn about activities in The Woodlands
Eliminating standing water is always one of the best ways to help eliminate a mosquito problem.
HOW BEST TO FIGHT THE BITE?
Fight Together!
Mosquitoes know no bounds; they are everyone’s problem. However, the short flight range of disease-carrying mosquitoes means that if we work together, we can minimize our exposure to flying adults and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease.
The mosquitoes which carry the Zika virus, Asian Tigers (Aedes albopictus), are weak flyers that travel only 600 feet from the water-holding container they emerge from. Those that
carry West Nile virus, Southern House mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus), range about a quarter-mile from their breeding grounds, especially if abundant sources of food and standing water for egg-laying are nearby. Working with neighbors to eliminate these sources of standing water makes a big difference in the number of flying, biting adult mosquitoes in your neighborhood!
DOING OUR PART
Initiated in 2004, The Woodlands Township Mosquito Surveillance and Education Program began in response to our area being a hot spot for West Nile virus (WNV). The team deploys traps from May to November to monitor the mosquito population for disease. Last year, 886 traps were set; 14 were confirmed positive for West Nile virus, or 1.6 percent of all traps. Many variables affect disease activity, so it is difficult to predict the incidence of West Nile virus in 2017. The accompanying figure shows the variability in the proportion of traps that collect disease-carrying mosquitoes each year.
By Megan Jamieson
As part of our Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) protocol, the Township relies on Montgomery and Harris Counties to provide chemical control in response to trap sites with disease-positive mosquitoes. Integrated Mosquito Management can easily be used on the home scale also.
DOING YOUR PART
Using Integrated Mosquito Management in your yard starts with physically reducing sources of standing water — drain after rain, and monitor your irrigation system to avoid overwatering. The next step is to use biological control. Places where water collects and doesn’t drain, such as bird baths, rain barrels and low spots in the yard should be treated monthly with Bti Mosquito Dunks® or similar product. Following these two steps targets mosquitoes in their juvenile stages, resulting in a reduced need for chemical treatments like spraying or fogging. By acting collectively, we can minimize our exposure to flying, biting adults and thus reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease!
