Township Honors Those Who Serve
Public Safety Awards
The Woodlands Township recently honored The Woodlands Fire Department and public safety individuals for their dedication and heroic efforts in 2021 to make The Woodlands one of the safest communities in the United States.
The Township recognized these achievements at the 10th annual Public Safety Awards held Saturday, March 26, 2022, at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center with hundreds of people in attendance, including honorees, guests and community leaders.
The event, called “Honoring Those Who Serve,” paid tribute to the commitment and heroic efforts of The Woodlands Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety - DPS, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office,
Montgomery County Hospital District, Montgomery County Constable’s Office, Precinct 3 and Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4. Each honoree was chosen by their respective departments for exemplary service, heroic efforts and dedication to public safety in The Woodlands.
“The Woodlands Fire Department and our partner agencies work diligently to ensure the safety and security of residents, visitors and businesses of The Woodlands,” said Township President and General Manager Monique Sharp. “We commend them for going the extra mile in making The Woodlands a safer community.”
The Woodlands Township produces and hosts this event each year, along with support and sponsorships from many other businesses and individuals in The
Woodlands and South Montgomery County area. This year, The Howard Hughes Corporation was the Honor Sponsor. Other major sponsors were America’s ER, Woodforest National Bank and Alpha and Omega Mounted Patrol.
“The Woodlands Township’s number one priority is to protect the well-being and safety of the community,” said Township Director Jason J. Nelson, who was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. “The Township makes a substantial commitment of resources in law enforcement and fire services. The Township is highly proactive about public safety and will continue to foster the strong relationships we have built. We sponsor multiple public safety programs throughout the year, bringing public safety to the neighborhoods and encouraging residents to get involved.”

and opportunities. Cochran’s Crossing Village Association will post links on our Facebook page and through Instagram when available.

BICYCLE HELMETS Find the Right Fit
FIT OF THE HELMET
• Measure the circumference of the head about an inch above the eyebrows. Compare this to the head size range found on the inside of the helmet.
Note: A child’s helmet must fit now. Do not buy a helmet for them to “grow into.” As the child’s head grows, replace the helmet.
POSITION OF THE HELMET
• A helmet that is too low or tilted forward can obstruct a child’s view. A helmet that’s too high or tilted back won’t protect a child’s face or forehead.
• The helmet should sit about two finger widths above the child’s eyebrows.
• Remove anything that prevents the helmet from sitting flush on a child’s head.
TIGHTEN FOR A SNUG FIT
• A helmet should fit snugly but comfortably.
• Just one finger should fit between the chin and the strap.
• The left and right-side straps should form a “V” and meet right below the ear.
• Check the position of the sliders regularly in case they have shifted.
FINAL CHECKS
• Yawn: Opening the mouth wide should cause the helmet to pull down on the head.
• Look up: You should see the front of the helmet or visor.
• Shake: The helmet should not move more than a half inch in any direction. If it does, re-adjust the sizing pads or fit ring.
• Look around: You should be able to see straight ahead and side to side.
REPLACEMENT OF THE HELMET
• Always replace a helmet after it has taken the impact of a crash. Even if it has been dropped hard on the pavement.
• As your child grows, recheck the fit and size up as needed.
• Replace any bike helmet after five years. Sunlight and heat can cause components inside to wear out over time.
Note: Thanks to the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency, the Texas Department of Transportation, the National Safety Council and St. Luke's for some of the information in this article.

BEFORE THE STORM
Batteries: Have enough on hand to provide power for flashlights and radios.
Food Items: Stock food items that have a long storage life and do not necessarily require cooking. If you have a liquefied propane (LP) camp / barbecue grill, purchase propane before the storm.
Radio: Have a battery-powered radio in your home.
Secure Your House: Trim your trees before hurricane season. Secure all large windows and sliding glass doors with plywood or cardboard to help prevent your windows from breaking.
Water Supply: Have plenty of water on hand before the hurricane arrives. Supplies will be limited when a storm is approaching. You should have at least four gallons of water per family of four per day for cooking and drinking.
Know Your Neighbor: Get to know your neighbors. A storm can damage one house and the house next door can go completely unharmed. Good neighbors can assist each other during weather-generated disasters.
DURING THE STORM
Have a Safe Room: Select a room in your house that is free of windows and large enough for everyone. The safe room is also the place to be if there is a tornado warning.
Shelter-In-Place: If you stay, high winds, tornadoes and flooding can be extremely hazardous. If you must go out, be sure to tell someone.
AFTER THE STORM
Know Your Insurance Company: Knowing your insurance company’s agent before can help a great deal in speeding up the insurance claim.

The Word on Birds
Texas is home to more species of birds than any other state. In fact, we host more than half of the 1,100 species in the U.S.
Here in The Woodlands, we’re doubly fortunate: not only are we replete with resources birds depend on such as forests, waterways and native plants, but we also lie at a crossroads of eastern and western habitats mixed with subtropical and temperate ones. From this diverse habitat springs diverse bird life. Best of all for the local avian lover, we sit in the central flyway where spring and fall migrations amplify an already impressive diversity of species.
You need not invest in a pair of hiking boots or high-powered binoculars to take in the spectacle. In fact, backyards and even apartment balconies offer ample opportunity to invite birds in for your enjoyment and their support.
Start by providing the essentials:
• Native trees and plants. They’re far superior to non-natives for providing sustenance and they require less water and care to thrive. For a list of natives, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/plantforpollinators and view the Plants for The Woodlands resource.
• Clean feeders. Supplementing what your native plants offer is a great idea if you provide quality feed, and you clean your feeder every other week to prevent disease transmission.
• Water sources, like a bird bath or misting system. Birdbaths should be no more than three inches deep with sloped sides. Be sure to clean them regularly with soap or a vinegar solution.
• Nesting and shelter options. Natural options include trees, tall grass and shrubs; supplement with bird houses and roost boxes.
• Avoid the chemicals. Applying pesticides rids your landscape of an essential food source for most birds as seeds alone aren’t enough. Instead, invite birds in as a natural pest control.
The best habitats incorporate each of these elements. If you want to make your backyard even more inviting, keep it cat-free. According to the American Bird Conservancy, cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds in the U.S. annually, making cat predation the largest human-caused threat to birds. If you can’t always keep your cat indoors, bring them in at dusk and dawn, when birds are more active.
For more resources on native plants for attracting birds in The Woodlands, or to learn more about birding programs, including the Backpack Birding program for local birdwatching, please email enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

Ensure Safe Flight for Migratory Birds: Participate in Lights Out, Texas
Did you know that one third of birds migrating through the U.S. each spring passes through Texas?
That’s nearly one billion birds, often flying at night. The bright lights of commercial and residential buildings can disorient birds, increasing mortality rates during their travel. During Spring Migration (March 1 through June 15), help ensure their safe flight by participating in Lights Out, Texa s.
• Turn non-essential lights off from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• Avoid using landscape lighting to illuminate trees or gardens where birds may be resting.
• For essential lights (security and safety lighting): Aim lights down, use lighting shields to direct light down, use motion sensors so lights are on only when you need them and close blinds at night to reduce the amount of light emitted.
Can’t commit to the full migration window? Consider participating through May 12, when half of the total spring bird migration passes through Texas. Follow these simple steps to ensure a successful journey through Texas.

Exemplary Water Conservation
By Bob Dailey
Water consumption in The Woodlands has declined dramatically since its all-time high in 2011, thanks to ongoing public education efforts around conservation and responsible stewardship.
Newly released figures of total single-family usage per year from 2009 thru 2021 indicate a 43 percent drop in water consumption from the high of 2011 in The Woodlands. In 2011, single-family residence consumption hit 5,654,555,000 gallons. However, even with an average three percent year-over-year population growth, the consumption for 2021 was 3,169,254,000 gallons, a 43 percent decrease.
In 2020, an anomaly occurred, which raised consumption levels about 200 million gallons. After investigating the reasons for that anomaly, we saw a substantial drop in water usage in businesses, particularly in businesses with substantial employee populations. We surmise from the figures that more people were working at home during the COVID -19 pandemic, and fewer people were at offices. The commercial numbers essentially offset the residential numbers.
In addition to Woodlands Water’s commitment to water awareness programs, public education and several other factors, other groups were instrumental in the usage reductions. The Woodlands Township’s Environmental Services Department spread the word through a series of
wide-ranging initiatives. The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department also reduced water usage in the Township parks to the tune of more than nine million gallons.
Friends of The Library promoted sound soil, lawn and related practices through a series of sponsored talks by Montgomery County master gardeners. The One Water initiative included The Woodlands Township, Woodlands Water and other interested parties, and went a long way toward informing the public
about the necessity of water conservation. The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., The Heartwood Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists, garden clubs, the Pines and Prairies Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas, and other civic organizations also contributed to the awareness process. Several nurseries (see the list on The Woodlands Water website under Rebates) offer a wide range of lowwater-use plants, including a great deal of natives.
