Summer Fun

STARTS WITH A SEASON POOL PASS!

Swim into summer fun at the Township pools with a season pool pass!

Summers in Texas are the hottest, so cool down at your neighborhood pool! Paying daily admission is a good plan for extended family and guests, and punch cards are nice for small groups and parties, or to give as gifts! But if your family loves the pools as much as we do, and is looking to save some money, the best option is to purchase a season pass.

A season pool pass includes admission to all Township pools; easy entry – just scan your pass and go; free admission to all Dive-In Movies; and we’re throwing a party just for you at The Rob Fleming Aquatic Center on July 23, 2018, with games, prizes and refreshments!

Season passes are available right now! Purchasing or renewing your pool pass can be done in any one of four ways:

1) Call us at 281-210-3950, during business hours listed below.

2) Visit us at one of the recreation centers listed below.

3) Go to www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/pools and follow the instructions.

4) Fill out the form with staff at a pre-season pool.

For new season passes, we recommend getting pictures taken at your nearest recreation center. The Bear Branch Recreation Center is located at 5310 Research Forest Drive, and the Rob Fleming Recreation Center is located at 6464 Creekside Forest Drive (across from the aquatic center). Both recreation centers are open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed on Sundays). Pictures must be

taken within one week of purchasing a new pass. Each pool is also equipped with a camera. Staff members will be happy to help take pictures at the front desk.

For more information about pool fees, amenities, program offerings and schedules, please see the Pool Schedule listing in this issue, pick up a 2018 Splash Guide or visit www. thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/pools

The Woodlands Waterway® Reaches Completion

Earlier this year, a project nearly 50 years in the making reached its final stage – The Woodlands Waterway ® The Howard Hughes Corporation commemorated the occasion with a ceremony at the completion point with officials from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce.

Envisioned as a transit corridor that would feature water, pathways and parks, construction on the 1.8-mile waterway started in earnest in 1999, but began as an idea in 1972, with a sketch on a napkin by Robert Heineman, vice president of planning for The Howard Hughes Corporation, developer of The Woodlands.

“The ‘napkin sketch’ in 1972 was really a diagram on a large index card of a transit corridor through the heart of the Town Center. From 1972 through 1977, numerous designers including Ford Powell Carson, Cambridge 7, EDAW,

Sasaki, Clark Condon, LJA, and even the internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, developed many concepts. The concepts varied from a string of small lakes, a continuous linear pedestrian greenbelt, a continuous water amenity, a transit corridor, and finally emerged as a combination of all of the above –a linear park along a waterway bordered by a pedestrian/transit corridor. Today, with the indispensable help of The Goodman Corporation, Brazos Transit, and others to implement the plan, the completion of The Waterway exists as a shining example of a commitment to a long-range vision, which began as a simple diagram on a napkin 45 years ago,” said Mr. Heineman, during the ceremony.

The Woodlands Waterway® connects shopping and dining, commercial businesses, residential living, entertainment including the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, public art and

public parks such as Town Green Park and Waterway Square.

The Woodlands Waterway® begins at The Woodlands Mall, continues through The Waterway Square District, and leads into the turning basin. A lower level of The Waterway continues to 200-acre Lake Woodlands.

The Woodlands Bike Month 2018

Having started as a conversation between three cyclists back in 2009, Bike The Woodlands Coalition is made up of residents who believe that The Woodlands can be a safer and better bicycling community for all facets of bicycling, including fitness, recreation and transportation, for riders of all ages and abilities.

Bike

The Woodlands Coalition helped

The Woodlands become the first suburban community in Texas to receive a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) recognition from the Leagues of American Bicyclists. Texas now has eight designated communities. BFC is a designation awarded to selected communities by the League of American Bicyclists. There are four levels (increasing in “friendliness”): Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Woodlands currently has a Bronze designation.

Bicycling is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone and anyone, with options for all, including training bikes

#BikeTheWoodlands #TheWoodlands #FamilyFun

for kids and adults, professional speed bicycles, young and adult tricycles and out-of-the-ordinary designs to help with comfort, balance and safety.

May was designated as National Bike Month in 1956 to showcase the many benefits of riding a bike, encouraging more people to ride whether it’s for fitness, transportation or recreation.

May 2018 will be the fifth consecutive year that our community will celebrate Bike Month. Organized by Bike The Woodlands Coalition in partnership with The Woodlands Township, Bike The Woodlands Month will offer events and activities for all preferences:

• Adult, family, and kids’ rides – long rides, relaxed rides, Mother’s Day ride, safety rides, women’s rides, kids rodeo, social ride, trail/mountain rides, bikekayak-bike and more;

• Bike Swap Meet – opportunity to buy, sell and barter for parts and bicycles;

• Bike and accessories donations –opportunity to share with those in need;

• Bike to Work Day – morning of May 18, 2018, to encourage cycling to work;

• Bike The Woodlands Day – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 19, 2018, at Northshore

Park, featuring live music, exhibitors, children’s activities and much more;

• Bike maintenance workshops – to learn basic and advanced maintenance for your bicycles, from flat tire repair to brake adjustment;

• Safety message – Be aware of the risks and learn how to ride safely.

IMPORTANT: Signed waiver and helmet are required for participants. Online registration is available at www.bikethewoodlands.org.

There are so many ways that bicycling can be a fun and natural part of everyday life in The Woodlands. Please join The Woodlands Township and Bike The Woodlands Coalition to celebrate Bike Month in The Woodlands and help create a better community through bicycling!

Two-Wheel Around Town

with Mobike

TheWoodlands Township recently launched an exciting partnership with Mobike, the world’s premier bike-sharing platform. Residents and visitors alike can now be seen pedaling the pathways and cruising along The Woodlands Waterway®. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the spring weather and take in the beauty of The Woodlands.

You might be wondering, what exactly is bike-sharing and how does it work? Similar to the concept of ride-sharing platforms such as Uber or Lyft, bike-sharing is a platform that allows individuals to rent bikes for a small fee by using a smartphone app. Users locate the nearest bike via the app, unlock the bike and ride it for an allotted time based on how much they would like to spend. At the end of their rental, users simply park the bike and lock it, leaving it available for the next rider.

Mobike offers a free app for users, which is available for download in the Apple (IOS) or Google Play (Android) store. Users can download the app to their smartphone and install it. Once installed, users create a profile and link a payment method to the app. From there, simply use the map feature to locate a bike near you. Once you reach the bike, click the unlock option on your phone, scan the QR code on the back of the bike using your phone and it will be unlocked for your use. Bikes are rented at a cost of $1 per half hour. Helmets are recommended but are not provided with the bike rental.

Users may ride the bikes any distance in The Woodlands, but bikes should be returned to an area within the boundaries defined on the service map at the end of use. After reaching their destination within The Woodlands Township Town Center limits, users manually lock the bike, which automatically makes the bike available to the next rider. Since Mobike is a dockless bike-share, there is no specific rack or place required to park the bikes. Simply park the bike somewhere out of harm’s way, lock it, and it will become available for the next rider to use.

Bicycling brings a variety of benefits from improving your health through exercise to supporting the environment by having fewer cars on the road. Whatever your reason, The Woodlands Township encourages you to take advantage of this wonderful service and enjoy a ride around the community.

The Mobike app allows users to easily locate a bike nearby and get to pedaling the pathways quickly.
Take in the sights of The Woodlands with a ride on a Mobike. Located conveniently around Town Center, these bikes are easy to use and inexpensive to rent! MAY 2018 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE 13
The boundary map defines the area where Mobikes should be returned after riding. Mobikes may be pedaled as far as you like within The Woodlands, but must be parked within the area of Town Center after use. Photo by Adriana McGee

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS

Alden Bridge

Here’s a virtual May basket of greetings from Alden Bridge! We’ve had a busy spring so far. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped out at the Flea Market, the GreenUp clean-up event, attended the Hands-Only CPR presentations for Alden Bridge and to all who submitted applications for our scholarships. And special thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate spring by attending our Spring Festival!

Our village association board will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Please join us at our premeeting reception to honor the recipients of our 2018 scholarships. There were so many outstanding applicants this year that the selection process was extremely difficult. In addition, Dr. Don Stockton, superintendent of CISD, will provide an update on our school district. Please join us!

The Alden Bridge Yard of the Month program is up and running again. We just awarded the first winner for 2018, and a front yard will be chosen every month through September. We’re always looking for nominations from residents, so look around your area and send us the address of any yard you think could be the best in the village – it could be your own! Send your nominations for next month to info@aldenbridge.org by Monday, May 21, 2018. We’ll judge during that week and award the winner on June 1. In addition to being recognized with a yard sign, the winning homeowner will receive some surprise gifts.

It’s time for pre-season pool openings, and I know we’re all happy about that! In our village, Windvale Pool (with the neat sprayground) will be open weekends, May 12-28, from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. On Memorial Day, all pools will be open from noon to 6 p.m. One pool is open weekdays during the May pre-

season, and that’s Falconwing in Cochran’s Crossing. The first day for regular season use of all pools will be June 1 (MondaySaturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.).

Do you receive our monthly email newsletter? It’s a convenient way to keep up on what’s going on in Alden Bridge.

It’s easy to get on the mailing list –just send your email addresses to info@aldenbridge.org. Your address will not be shared and will be used only to deliver news of our village to your computer. Between newsletters, please check our website, www.aldenbridge.org, or participate in our active Facebook page. We really want to be a resource for our residents, so please reach out to us with any questions or concerns that you have. Happy Memorial Day to all!

Cochran’s Crossing

Let’s look ahead just a month to the end of the school year and the start of summer. In The Woodlands, that means it’s time for the Cochran’s Crossing Welcome to Summer Pool Party. The free party will be held at Shadowbend Park on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Although it will coincide with regular pool hours, a major part of the activities will be from noon on throughout the afternoon. There will be free Kona Ice from 1 to 3 p.m.

Chairperson for the event this year will be Michael Riccaiardi. He’s one of our newest Cochran’s Crossing board members, and he enthusiastically volunteered to take on this first assignment.

Of course, village board members and other residents of Cochran’s Crossing had an opportunity to sign in and participate in the Earth Day GreenUp. We were specifically directed to use Shadowbend Park as a registration and supply distribution center. However, it was possible to work on this project throughout Cochran’s Crossing and other villages.

An event that has required advance planning is the scheduling of a Cochran’s Crossing trip to an Astros game. In the past, seats were fairly easy to obtain. However, with the Astros winning the World Series in 2017, it’s a different story. A large block of seats had to be reserved long before the season started. The cost of tickets, which is around $30, includes transportation to and from the game. Be sure to keep up through the village newsletter and Facebook page regarding ticket availability.

If you know a village association board member, give them a call to thank them for stepping up to help serve the community and The Woodlands. Let them know any community priorities you believe should be addressed. Recent agenda items have ranged from updates on the Bear Branch Recreation Center construction to political candidates pitching their case, to concerns between neighbors related to how covenants might cover privacy issues related to security cameras and issues such as barking dogs.

Remember, the Cochran’s Crossing board meetings are open to all residents who are interested in community activities. They are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms.

College Park

It is POOLOOZA time again! Residents of College Park are invited to join the College Park Village Association at Harper’s Landing Pool and Pavilion on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. Pool passes are suspended during the event hours. There will be food, face painting, games, a bounce house and more. As you can tell, this is an event for the entire family to enjoy, and all at no cost to our residents.

New this year at Poolooza is an opportunity for you to be trained in the

method of Hands-Only CPR. Just stop in at the designated tent for a 20-minute training that could save a life!

Be sure to purchase your pool pass this season and visit all The Woodlands pools. Your pass grants you admission to all. Bear Branch Park and Pool have been undergoing extensive renovations and should be on everyone’s must-visit list later this summer.

In July, we will host a viewing tent for the Fourth of July parade for our neighbors from College Park. If you live in the villages of Windsor Hills, Grogan’s Forest or Harper’s Landing, please join us for the parade viewing at the corner of Lake Woodlands and Grogan’s Mill.

Looking further ahead to November, we will celebrate America Recycles. Starting now, we ask you to sort through your old CDs and CD jewel cases. Then set them aside to be turned in at the November recycling event and Village Challenge. The village with the most collected will be awarded cash prizes to help fund our scholarship program!

Re-elected College Park board members for 2018 are as follows: Joel Barnes, Johanne Stanley, Steve Lamotta and Mike Larson. Dave Mulberrry will serve a two-year term as treasurer. Ted Stanley serves as the College Park president and Marti Meerscheidt as secretary with both entering the second year of a two-year term on the board. For more information about College Park, please visit us on Facebook or on our website.

At its March planning meeting, the village board prepared a tentative budget of $53,000 in total income (including Farmer’s Market) and $54,400 in expenses. Major budgeted expenses include $29,000 to operate the Farmer’s Market, $6,000 in school donations to four schools in Grogan’s Mill, $5,400 for website, newsletters and emails, $4,000 in scholarships, $2,500 to Interfaith, and $1,500 for insurance. The final budget was adopted at the April meeting.

The association is pleased to crank up its Yard of the Month with its first $50 Randall’s Gift Certificate winner, Jon and Tawna Kingsley. Jon is the owner of Kingsley Constructors and Tawna is its corporate secretary and treasurer. They have lived in Grogan’s Point for about 17 years and, previously, elsewhere in Grogan’s Mill. Their yard was decimated by the frost at the beginning of the year, but is now alive with a wide variety of azaleas. Plans are in the works to re-plant those that died with hardier beauties.

If you know of someone (don’t be bashful about nominating yourself) that should earn Yard of the Month, please contact any village director.

With warm weather now the norm, there are more fresh vegetables and other goodies at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market, Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon. Grab a friend and shop our 30+

vendors. Bring your own bags to save on plastic. Profits from Farmer’s Market vendor fees are returned to the community through various philanthropic contributions, school donations, scholarships and community programs.

Indian Springs

The Indian Springs Village Association is proud to once again support our local schools. The funds raised through village association events, such as the Taste of the Village in October, are used for scholarships for our Indian Springs high school seniors and donations to our neighborhood schools.

A $500 donation was recently made to Galatas Elementary School for the enhancement of their literacy library that houses both fiction and non-fiction books on a variety of reading levels. Principal Denae Wilker writes, “Teachers are able to check out sets of books from the library to read with their classes in small guided reading groups. The goal of the small group instruction is to provide

differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency.”

An additional $500 donation was made to Glen Loch Elementary for library expansion of Biography and Spanish hardback book selections. Glen Loch Librarian Paige Wolf stated, “Students have asked, on numerous occasions, about biographies on current athletes and other people of interest.” With updated selections, students will be more enticed to read and learn about their heroes and current leaders.

you missed it. Another Woodlands Flea Market will be held this fall. Watch for it and start setting items aside to sell or make space for the wonderful holiday bargains that hallmark this event. Buyers and sellers come from down the street and across the southwest to this fun event. Watch for details here or check www.TheWoodlandsFleaMarket.org

If you wish to go fishing on our Creekside pond, beware. The young anglers who participated in the 11th Annual Creekwood Fishing Derby in March have harvested many of the fish already. With the help of The Woodlands Fire Department volunteers, young anglers had a most enjoyable and productive day. Come join us next year at this fun and fish-filled event.

Save a place on your schedule for the annual Panther Creek Flag Day picnic and swim party. Bring the kids for a free day at Ridgewood Pool, 4192 Interfaith Way. Residents will be treated to special Flag Day events, grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, sodas and much more, all hosted by the Panther Creek Village Association board members.

With championship baseball season well underway, join your Panther Creek neighbors as we hop on custom coaches to take us down to a good old-fashioned baseball outing in Houston. Since we expect another victory, there will be a fireworks show afterwards, weather permitting. If you haven’t taken the kids to a big league baseball game yet, this is your year. Call 281-296-9960 or contact your Panther Creek area rep.

Joining the Panther Creek Village Association board or simply attending a monthly meeting is a wonderful way to get involved in your community. MOSQUITO Monitoring Begins

The month of May in Texas kicks off mosquito season. Though mosquitoes have been out since temperatures warmed up in March, May is when the Texas Department of State Health Services begins testing mosquitoes for disease.

Southeast Montgomery County has been a hot spot for West Nile virus after it emerged in Texas in 2002. Since that time, The Woodlands Township has focused on educating the public about bite prevention and monitoring mosquito-borne disease. Last year, there was a low incidence of West Nile virus in The Woodlands; only one percent of the mosquito samples sent for testing was found to carry the disease. No samples tested positive for Zika virus.

During the 2017 mosquito season, the Township’s Environmental Services Mosquito Team set a total of 1,749 traps over 32 weeks. This was a 77 percent increase from 2016, largely due to the addition of more traps that target Aedes albopictus, a potential Zika vector. New for 2018, the trap inventory has grown to include Biogents Gravid Aedes Traps (GATs) to target and eliminate egg-laying mosquitoes. These improved traps mimic the breeding sites mosquitoes seek around homes, which are containers holding water.

Surveys in 2017 reconfirmed that containers such as plant saucers, toys, wheelbarrows, buckets and birdbaths are the main source of mosquito breeding sites. During the warm temperatures of summer, standing water is fertile ground for mosquito population growth, as it only takes a week for a whole new generation of mosquitoes to emerge.

The Woodlands Township reminds residents to take a moment every week to empty containers holding water and scrub out birdbaths. Purchase Mosquito Dunks ® from any home and garden store, and use them to control mosquito larvae in water that can’t be eliminated.

Answers to Common Yard Care Questions

L ve Your Lawn

What’s the proper height to set your mower?

Different types of turf require different heights of mowing.

• From April through September, St. Augustine should be mowed at the height of 3 to 4 inches.

• Bermuda grass should be mowed at 2 inches.

• Coarse-bladed Zoysia (Japonica) should be mowed at 1.5 to 2 inches.

• Fine-Bladed Zoysia (Matrella) should be mowed at 1 to 2.5 inches.

Remember not to let the grass grow too tall (50 percent above the recommended cutting height). Too much off the top can stress the turf.

I have trees in my yard, and the grass doesn’t want to grow well under them. What can I do?

Remember that grass is a plant too, and requires sunlight to convert energy to food. Of all the turf grasses that are adaptable to southeast Texas, St. Augustine grows best in shaded areas. However, if it can’t get any sunlight at all, it will cease to grow under your trees. If your grass is getting thin in undertree areas, you might think of hiring an arborist to do some minor pruning on your trees to allow more sunlight.

Is now the right time to use a “weed and feed” product?

No time is the right time to use weed and feed products. The proper time to apply the pre-emergence herbicide used in this product is before the weeds begin to grow, in late February to early March.

The proper time to fertilize or “feed” turf is mid-April. Applying them both at the same time is a waste of time and money. Apply “weed and feed” too early, and the fertilizer is dissipated or leached out of the soil by the time the grass needs it. Apply it too late, and the “weed” part has no purpose, because the weeds have already emerged and seeded.

How often should I water my lawn in late spring and summer?

Residents of The Woodlands can only water twice a week according to whether they have an odd or even address. That doesn’t mean you need to water twice a week. For 2017, experts and empirical data have indicated that, because of rain and high humidity, we needed to irrigate lawns only 12 weeks out of the entire year. And about half of that time, we didn’t need to irrigate more than one time during the week. The best way to gauge how much to irrigate is to have a rain sensor installed (they’re very inexpensive – about $20) or install a Smart controller. Remember that The WJPA offers rebates for either of those.

Why is the soil under my lawn rock hard?

Too much water, too many salt-based fertilizers and pesticides and too little organic matter in the soil are primary causes of hard soil. It has become compacted, making it harder for grass roots to penetrate. Pull up a handful of grass, roots and all. If the roots are shorter than three inches, your soil is too hard for the roots. Good St. Augustine, for instance, can grow roots as deep as at least six feet.

What can I do to fix hard soil?

Aerate your yard. Then add a half-inch of organic material (compost) across the top of your lawn. The compost will enter the soil and the aeration will help water and air to penetrate it (roots need air and water too).

When is the best time to sod my lawn?

Spring (April and May) or early fall (October) are the best times to lay sod. Remember to add organic material when you do resod.

LEARN TO CREATE A Sustainable and Water-Efficient Landscape

In 2017, The Woodlands Township hosted its first Smarter About Water Seminar, and it is now time for new dialogue to keep up with the latest, and smartest, thinking about water saving.

The upcoming free seminar on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Woodlands Emergency Training Center, 16135 IH-45 North, will take a closer look at residential landscapes with a view to making them functional, beautiful, sustainable and water efficient.

The workshop will start from the ground up! How healthy is your soil?

Soil health has been defined as the “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living system…to sustain biological productivity, promote the quality of air and water environments, and maintain plant, animal, and human health.”

(Biological Indicators of Soil Health, Pankhurst, Doube and Gupta, 1997.)

As the basis for your garden and yard, proper maintenance will also help conserve water. This session will instruct you on how to test, improve and maintain your soil health. As a followup, you’ll hear about best irrigation

practices to promote healthy plants and prevent overwatering. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that up to 50 percent of the water used for outdoor irrigation in this country goes to waste. This wasted water takes its toll not just on the environment, but on the pocketbooks of millions of Americans. Save water, save money and keep your lawn green and healthy – by using only what you need.

Attendees will explore how native plants conserve water while attracting beneficial wildlife. In addition, lunch will be provided. Your yard can be sustainable and beautiful. Join us to learn which plants are right for your space. It promises to be a day of exceptional learning opportunities. Attendance is free, but registration is required, so sign up today by visiting www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ environment , or by calling 281-210-3800.

HELP PROMOTE CURB APPEAL

by storing your trash and recycle carts out of sight!

All trash, refuse or recycling containers may be placed near the street edge no earlier than one day prior to waste collection. Emptied containers must be removed from the street, front yard or driveway by the end of the collection day. Containers must be stored on the owner’s property at all times. All trash and refuse containers must be stored out of public view at ground level from the street or alley or adjacent and surrounding properties at all times except during waste collection. Questions? Call The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800.

No Interruption for Curbside Services on Memorial Day

Recycling Contamination: Keep It Green and Clean!

Rinse, recycle, repeat…. Don’t leave those peanut butter jars unrinsed! You may think that the few jars and cans you left dirty in your cart won’t have much effect, but what if each of the 82 percent of residents who participated in curbside recycling in 2017 felt the same way? Food residue and oils on containers increase the contamination rate, and too high of a rate will send the entire load to the landfill.

The quality, or cleanliness, of recycled plastics, metals, and paper directly affects their value – the fewer contaminants, the greater the value and thus, the more costeffective the program is for our community. Additionally, contaminants, especially plastic bags, wires and cords, damage machinery and compromise the safety of workers at the processing plant.

For more information on recycling, please visit www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/recycling or The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 and ask for Environmental Services.

KEEP RECYCLING WORKING

Rinse and empty bottles and cans. Keep plastic caps on bottles.

AVOID THESE CONTAMINANTS

Food-soiled paper/cardboard Plastic bags and film Pizza Boxes

Diapers/biohazardous waste Shredded paper Scrap metal

Frozen food bags and boxes #6 plastic Styrofoam

Yard trimmings/Green waste Clothing Light Bulbs

Ceramics, Pyrex Dishes Mirrors

WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT.

Picnics, barbecues and shared memories – the Memorial Day holiday is prime time for family and friends. Although a three-day weekend for many, Waste Management crews will provide solid waste services as usual over the Memorial Day holiday and the week following Monday, May 28, 2018.

There will be no interruption or delay of services. All residents will receive curbside pick-up of trash, recycling and yard trimmings on their regularly scheduled service day. If your gathering generates more trash than the 96-gallon cart can hold, extra service tags are available for purchase for $1.75 at Township offices, Kroger and Randall’s. One pink service tag should be affixed to each plastic bag of household trash that will not fit into the trash cart.

For a trouble-free pick-up, please place carts at the curb before 7 a.m. on your regular pick-up day. If you have house guests, please keep streets clear of parked cars on trash days to prevent blocked streets and missed pick-ups. Please make sure that lids on carts close completely and follow service guidelines.

The Woodlands Recycling Center at 5402 Research Forest Drive will maintain its normal schedule, Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Precinct 3 Recycling Center will be closed on Monday, May 28, 2018, in recognition of the county holiday. The facility will reopen on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, operating during regular hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Per the Holiday Collection Schedule, the only holidays that will affect residential trash and recycling collection in 2018 will be New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Find more information about trash and recycling services by visiting Environmental Services online at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/environment. Call Waste Management Customer Service at 800-800-5804 to report missed pickups.

PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

with Tips from The Woodlands Fire Department

With hurricane season fast approaching, we should do everything we can to be prepared that we may be impacted in some way by a hurricane in 2018. The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30; however, we must remember that a hurricane can form at any time and the greatest probability is in September. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other organizations estimate 15 named storms for 2018. Knowing how to prepare and what to do in case of impact can be lifesaving, so let’s get started.

BASIC PREPAREDNESS

Have a Plan: Know your evacuation routes and where you will be staying.

If You Leave: Put together a go-bag. Pack a flashlight, crank charger, batteries, cash, basic first aid supplies, medications

and copies of vital information in case you must evacuate.

If You Stay: Plan for several days without power or water and plan for each person staying to have one gallon of water per day. If you have a generator, remember to keep it outside away from windows and doors. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It is odorless and colorless.

PREPARE YOUR HOME

Hurricane winds are devastating, so preparing your home is crucial. Trim or remove damaged trees. Secure rain gutters. Secure patio and pool furniture. Place any unnecessary equipment in a garage (BBQ pits, potted plants, and any other loose debris). Protect windows. For a complete list of tips and preparing for other types of emergencies, you can visit www.ready.gov.

Smart Decisions for Safe Driving

Distracted

driving can be extremely dangerous and can result in a totaled car, injury to you or others and possibly even fatalities. Distractions can be the result of operating a phone to text, Snapchat or send an Instagram message. Drivers can also be distracted cognitively by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It only takes a split second of distraction to cause a lifetime of pain and suffering for you or others.

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch invites you to hear the story of Sean Carter at the Smart Decisions For Safe Driving event Sunday, May 6, 2018, at The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park, 6464 Creekside Forest Drive. Sean will speak at 2 p.m. followed by hands-on activities from 3 to 5 p.m. Sean and his mother Jenny have a powerful message to share about the choices that Sean made that placed him in a wheelchair and unable to talk or walk. Even though his voice is silent, he can be heard as he communicates through his iPad and shares his message. Their organization is dedicated to spreading

the word of how important it is to think before you get behind the wheel of a car. It is just as important to be careful whose car you get into as a passenger. This impactful program is one that you and the drivers in your household should not miss!

Following the presentation, learn about the laws in our state and the consequences of making poor decisions. Hands-on activities and information will be provided by: Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Constable Office Precinct 4, Texas A&M Passenger Safety, Texas A&M Watch UR Back, Montgomery County 9-1-1, Montgomery County Hospital District, Memorial Hermann Live Your Dreams, Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation, and MADD.

Activities include Walk the Line (field sobriety test), distracted driving and DUI driving simulators, DUI pedal cars, virtual reality goggles, seat belt rollover convincer and more.

For more information about this event or other programs, please contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch at neighbor@ thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov or call 281-210-3800.

SAFE DRIVING

There’s an app for that!

When choosing a safe driving app, consider the following:

• Is the app compatible with your phone?

• Does it have the ability to block messages and calls?

• Can it track the miles you have driven safely?

• Will it provide notifications to parents?

• Does it offer rewards for driving safely and distraction-free?

Some distracted driving apps: SMARTwheel, Focus, CellControl, Safe2save, and Lifesaver.

100 DEADLIEST DAYS Stay Safe on the Roads this Summer

Memorial Day weekend is often considered the start of summer vacation for students and their families; however, Memorial Day also starts what is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. The summer driving season, ending on Labor Day, is historically when teen deaths in car crashes increase across the country. Sadly, Texas is no exception to this concerning trend.

In 2016, 33 drivers who were 16 years of age were involved in fatality car crashes, with 11 of those 33 drivers losing their lives in the crash, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The number of teen drivers dying and being involved in fatality crashes more than doubled for 17-year-olds with those drivers being involved in 68 fatality crashes and 25 of those drivers dying. 18-yearold drivers were involved in 106 fatality crashes with 44 of those drivers losing

their lives. 67.5 percent of those deceased drivers aged 16 to 18 were males.

In that same time frame, there were 987 people killed on Texas roadways in motor vehicle crashes where a driver was under the influence of alcohol and 455 people killed in crashes involving distracted driving. Alcohol impairment and distracted driving accounted for 38 percent of the total number of people killed in Texas traffic crashes. Distracted driving, such as talking, texting or operating a cell phone, or talking to passengers in the vehicle, continues to be one of the leading causes of crashes for teen drivers.

As one of the fastest growing counties in the country, Montgomery County is a great place to live, work and raise a family. Unfortunately, Montgomery County is also one of the most dangerous Texas counties for drivers with one of the

highest fatality crash rates in the state. With an estimated population of nearly 600,000 people, Montgomery County is the 11th most populous county in Texas. In 2016, 75 lives were lost on Montgomery County roadways. This gave our county the highest fatality crash rate for large Texas counties (population of 500,000 or more). That same year, 21 people lost their lives in car crashes where a driver was impaired from alcohol, placing Montgomery County second, to much larger Dallas County, for the highest fatality crash rate for crashes that involved alcohol for large Texas counties.

All drivers, especially young and inexperienced drivers, need to remember that there is nothing more important than keeping your attention on the roadway, the other vehicles and your surroundings while behind the wheel. We all share our roadways and we need to remember that.

National Travel and Tourism Week

To bring awareness to the impact that travel and tourism have on the local economy, Visit The Woodlands participates in National Travel and Tourism Week each year. This annual salute to travel, now in its 35th year, will be held May 6-12, 2018.

The travel industry supports the local economy by increasing spending and revenue in The Woodlands. In previous years, spending related to travel has generated more than $25 million dollars in state and local sales tax revenue and has created more than 664,000 jobs statewide, with 3,800 of those jobs in the travel and tourism industry right here in The Woodlands! Without tourism and travel, the average household would pay more in taxes each year.

Tourism influences the economy, and then enhances our community’s way of life. The contributions of visitors made by hotel stays and tax revenue allows for job creation and business growth. In addition, it assists in maintaining the Township’s critical infrastructure and funds other initiatives that benefit us all.

Travel and tourism are critical to helping our community grow and thrive, making The Woodlands a wonderful place not only to live but also to visit.
