Summers in Texas are some of the hottest in the nation! With recordbreaking temperatures and added humidity, it can sometimes be difficult to enjoy being outside. But it’s always cool at the pool! Bring the whole family and slide down the family slide at Cranebrook; hop across the lily pads at Wendtwoods; wrestle the floating alligator at Harper’s Landing; take a swim lesson at Alden Bridge; or practice your cannonballs off the diving board at Falconwing. There are so many great amenities to choose from at each of these unique facilities!
Daily admission is good for your visitors and guests, and punch cards are good for small groups and parties. But if you love the pools as much as we do, and are looking to save some money, the best option is to purchase a season pass! Season passes offer unlimited entries to 13 pools, including the ever-popular Rob Fleming Aquatic Center.
Think about this: An adult resident of The Woodlands need only visit a neighborhood pool seven times this season to make a season pass worth the investment… Or visit the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center just four times! For an infant resident of The Woodlands, a season pass is the same price as ONE daily admission!
Season passes are available for purchase or renewal now! Get your season passes early and avoid waiting in line at the pools this summer. Purchasing or renewing your pool pass can be done in one of three ways:
1) Call us at 281-210-3950, during business hours listed below.
2) Visit us at The Woodlands Recreation Center at the address listed below.
3) Go to www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/pools and follow the instructions.
Then, beginning when the pools open for the season, you can fill out a purchase or renewal form at the pool itself.
For new season passes, pictures should be taken at The Woodlands Recreation Center, located at 5310 Research Forest Drive, within one week of purchasing a new pass by phone, online or at the pool. Pool staff is trained to politely, but firmly, deny entry to those that have exceeded that time limit. Pools are also equipped with cameras, and staff will be able to help take pictures as well when doing so does not cause others to wait to enter the facility. The Recreation Center is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
2017
for a great, cool
Magnets are also available for quick reference on pool schedules for the 2017 season. Ask for one when you purchase or renew your pool pass.
Each village in The Woodlands features one pool that is open for preseason weekends beginning Saturday, May 6, 2017, and all pools open for the regular season beginning Friday, June 2, 2017. For information about fees, pool amenities and schedules, please see the pool schedule listing on page 7 of this issue, pick up a 2017 Splash Guide, or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/pools.

The Township has always prioritized safety, cleanliness and a fun, family-oriented atmosphere at its swimming pools, and we know our residents also have friends and family that they visit all over the country, and the world. So, what can you do to protect your family when you’re at a pool?
First, come prepared. Anything you can do to be ready in case of an emergency will help your family.
– Have you had a basic water safety discussion with your little ones?
– Do you know your child(ren)’s level of ability and comfort in the water? If you don’t, who does?
– Is someone in your family CPR trained?
– Do you know the address of the nearest medical facility or where to find it quickly?
– Read the rules with your children.
– When it comes to safety, only trust U.S. Coast Guard Approved floatation devices.
Second, know the danger spots of the pool.
– Find all the exits and entrances. Children love an open gate.
– Walk around the pool yourself and know the water depths.
– Never swim in a pool if you can’t see the bottom.
Next, know the signs of a safer environment:
– Lifeguards! In Texas, wherever there is one lifeguard, there legally has to be at least two.
– Safety equipment
– Clean bathrooms
– Good lighting
Lastly, the best and MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do at any pool is actively watch your children. Stay within an arm’s reach of nonswimmers and keep swimming children in your field of vision at all times. As a parent, only you know their facial expressions and body language when they are feeling timid, worried, scared, overconfident or tired. Only you know how well they can really swim, and that they’re having fun!

Start your summer off right with Memorial Day Weekend in The Woodlands Sunday, May 28, 2017, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Town Green Park located at 2099 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77380. The event pays tribute to all military service men and women who lost their lives while serving the United States, and also honors all veterans who serve as a symbol for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice of life to protect our freedom. Festivities also include live music, children’s activities, strolling entertainers and more! The event will conclude with a dazzling fireworks display choreographed to a patriotic soundtrack, weather permitting. Concessions will be available for purchase. Vendor opportunities are available. Memorial Day Weekend in The Woodlands is produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department. Please visit www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/memorialday for information.
With picnics, barbecues and shared memories, the Memorial Day holiday is a prime time for family and friends. Although a three-day weekend for many, Waste Management crews will provide solid waste services as usual over the Memorial Day holiday and the week following Monday, May 29, 2017.
There will be no interruption or delay of services. All residents will receive curbside pickup of trash, recycling and yard trimmings on their regularly scheduled service day. If you have house guests, please keep streets clear of parked cars on trash days to prevent blocked streets and missed pick-ups.
If your gathering generates more trash than the 96-gallon cart can hold, extra service tags are available for purchase for $1.75 at Township offices, Kroger and Randalls. One pink service tag should be affixed to each plastic bag of household trash that will NOT fit into the trash cart.
Find more information about trash and recycling services on the Township website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ holidaytrash. To report missed pickups, please call Waste Management Customer Service at 800-800-5804. For unresolved service issues, please contact The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800.
If you were living in The Woodlands 20 years ago, you may remember May 1997 as the month that the quarterly, four-to-eight-page The Woodlands Community Newslette r, funded through assessment dollars, officially became a monthly magazine, supported by advertising. It came about as a partnership between the homeowner association boards (then the governing agencies for The Woodlands) and Champions Printing & Publishing, Inc., who presented a plan
for the magazine in response to a call to reduce costs and improve the publication. Other printers and publishers also presented plans, but none guaranteed the $0 cost to print and mail the magazine to The Woodlands’ continually growing population.
Since 1997, the magazine has grown from 18,000 circulation to over 46,000, changed from two-color to full color, has won three Communicator Awards, one Bronze Quill Award and one Gold MarComm Award, and has consistently scored high readership rankings in the biennial Township resident surveys. In the 2016 survey, the magazine was ranked first by residents as a source to learn about Township news and events, above all other local news sources.
As the official magazine of The Woodlands Township, the magazine’s content is focused on services and
Asthe official publisher of The Woodlands Community Magazine, everyone at Champions Printing & Publishing, Inc. would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the residents of The Woodlands for their continued support of the community magazine, and for ranking it as the number one source of Township news and events. For over 30 years we have been providing communities in northwest Houston with quality publications and printing. For the last 20 years, we have taken pride in working with the associations of The Woodlands that have made this magazine possible. Widely used as the most important communication tool between homeowners and their associations, our publications include content that is sought out and well read, while offering a means for advertisers to market to new customers. Our 32 publications are delivered every
month to over 80,000 of northwest Houston’s most affluent homes.
Our philosophy is simple: a well read magazine works well, for both readers and advertisers.
“Uniquely created for each neighborhood and developed in conjunction with resident editors, our publications offer a long shelf life, presenting opportunities for numerous readings per month, per home, and per person.”
By combining informative news, a monthly calendar of events, and important contact information for our readers in an advertising vehicle that lasts throughout the month, we partner with our advertisers to raise their exposure, increase their revenue, and help achieve
programs of the Township, and its partners, as provided to residents through their tax dollars. The magazine itself is still produced, as it has been for 20 years, at zero charge to the Township or to residents. Township staff prepares the articles and photographs. Volunteer residents contribute photographs from time to time, and village correspondents share articles and photographs to provide news of interest to each respective village. Champions staff coordinates the advertising as well as layout and design, printing and mailing. In addition to being direct-mailed each month, the magazine is available online at www.
thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/magazine
Thanks to all the people who read our magazine each month and count on it to bring them news of the Township. We are thrilled to be the official magazine of the Township for 20 years. Cheers to the next!
– Mary Connell, Editortheir sales goals. We will continue to provide quality, timely content that pertains directly to The Woodlands, and local advertising opportunities to support the community.
We would like to thank everyone for this incredible 20-year run as the official magazine of The Woodlands Township.

Here’s a virtual May basket of greetings from Alden Bridge! Thanks to the volunteers who helped out at the Spring Flea Market and to all who submitted applications for our scholarships. And special thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate spring by attending our Spring Festival!
Our monthly Village Association board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest. Please join us at our pre-meeting reception to honor the winners of our 2017 scholarships. We had so many outstanding applications this year that it was extremely difficult to select our winners.
We just awarded the first Yard of the Month for 2017, and a winner will be chosen every month through September. Each month we select one winning yard from those that have been nominated as best front yard in Alden Bridge. Please don’t hesitate to nominate your neighbors or yourself for this honor! Send us your nominations for next month to info@aldenbridge.org by Monday, May 22. We’ll judge during that week and award the winner on June 1. In addition to being recognized with a yard sign, each winner will receive a variety of surprise gifts.
Hooray - it’s time for pre-season pool openings, and I know we’re all happy about that! In our village, Windvale pool (with the neat sprayground) will be open weekends May 6 to 29 from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. On Memorial Day Monday all pools will be open from noon to 6 p.m. The first day for regular season use of all pools will be June 2 (Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.).
Please continue to send your email addresses to us at info@aldenbridge.org so we can add you to the subscriber list for our monthly newsletter. Your address will not be shared and will be used only
to deliver news of our village to your computer. Between newsletters, please check our website, www.aldenbridge.org, or participate in our active Facebook page. We really want to be a resource for our residents, so please reach out to us with any questions or concerns that you have. Happy Memorial Day to all!

What is the saying? April showers bring May flowers. Hopefully, there won’t be May showers like we were treated to last May. Perhaps the time and attention Stuart Schroeder, Cochran’s Crossing Village Association President and a member of the Township Storm Drainage Task Force that is keeping flooding concerns a priority, gives will help overcome the problems. At least, we aren’t facing the drought conditions that made us question if Lake Conroe would ever be full again. So much for the May weather report, now it is time for some news that is closer to home. One pledge: this will not be fake news.
The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board continues to lead participation in Township-wide activities such as the GreenUp and the Fourth of July parade. By the way, if you want to march with Cochran’s Crossing and/or drive an antique vehicle with us, contact Cochran’s Crossing Village Association Board Secretary Gary Conwell at gconwell1@gmail.com, or call him at 281-387-6986.
However, this year there are some new faces on the board. Those joining the board include Phil Greger, Serafin “Sef” Farias and Charlie Keen. In addition to events, the village association board brings speakers to the monthly Cochran’s Crossing Village Association meetings.
Those who have made presentations include Captain Allison Allen, who heads up The Woodlands Division
for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). Captain Allen’s visit to the village association was particularly relevant. She discussed the concept of community-oriented policing (COP), which has become an important part of the MCSO service philosophy. It could be described as networking in which the police develop positive relationships with the citizens they serve. The MCSO members get a better understanding of issues in their service area. The residents come to understand law enforcement officials are not just there when bad things happen.
Of course, the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board already had that philosophy through the interaction with Deputy Jason Hopper. For a number of years, he has been the lead deputy with Cochran’s Crossing, working to help prevent crime in The Woodlands and also participating in community events.
The Township contract with MCSO has led to a positive presence in the area. However, the criminal justice system can’t solve all problems, and the objective is to prevent crime before it occurs. Captain Allen pointed out crime takes an offender, a place and a victim. The objective is to eliminate one of those legs.
Remember, Cochran’s Crossing has more board members than any of the
other village associations. That’s a good thing for help in event participation. On the other hand, it can also mean an open position comes up from time to time. If you are interested in village association board membership, let our secretary know you want to be made aware of vacancies. Cochran’s Crossing Village Association meetings are 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month (except December).
You can also connect on the village association’s website, Facebook page or newsletter.

It is POOLOOZA time again! Residents of College Park are invited to join the village association at Harper’s Landing Pool and Pavilion, Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 1 to 4 p.m. Pool passes are suspended during the event hours. Plus, there will be food, face painting, games, a bounce house and more. As you can tell, this is an event for the entire family to enjoy and all at no cost to our residents
Our Harper’s Landing Pool will have an update this spring with new plaster. The playground will have a facelift later this spring as well. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office continue to focus on resident safety and crime prevention. In previous months, we have shared Deputy Hopper’s crime reports and crime prevention tips here in this column. This month, we learned that there are very few instances of vehicles being stolen in our community. Residents can continue to keep our crime statistics down by taking a few moments to lock our cars and put valuables out of site. Be aware of your surroundings and never leave your car unlocked.
Be sure to purchase your pool pass this season and visit The Woodlands Township pools. Your pass gains you
admission to them all. If you decide to drive out to Rob Fleming Park, you can also visit our newest park addition, which is in Creekside Village across from the Rob Fleming Pavilion. Northshore Park in Panther Creek has been undergoing renovations and should also be on your must visit list this spring. There is no pool there, but it is a great location for an outing or to catch an outdoor concert. For more information about College Park, please visit us on the College Park Village Association Facebook page or website.

Greetings Creekside Park Village residents! It is May, and a lot of things have been happening in Creekside Park Village. During the winter months, we challenged our residents to pledge to shut their sprinkler systems off in order to raise awareness of the value in conserving this resource when the demand is low; due to your efforts, Creekside Park Village won first place in the Water-Wise Village Challenge. As the winners of the challenge, we were awarded $300 from The Woodlands Township. The funds from this challenge and other volunteer opportunities allowed us to reward our local schools with donations for much needed supplies. The village association board challenged the Creekside Park Village schools to send volunteers to events in order to increase the amount of money they would be eligible for; criteria were set by the Creekside Park Village Association Education Committee. Creekview and Creekside Forest Elementary schools were awarded $750 each. Timbercreek Elementary and Creekside Park Junior High fulfilled their volunteer goal and each received $1,000. Board Elections/Filings were held in February for the Village Boards and continued on page 20

Submitted by Lisa PurtellThe Grogan’s Mill Village Association held its annual planning meeting, March 20, 2017. The village association board adopted a $22,940 budget; the highlights
of which include $4,000 for scholarships, $4,000 for schools, $4,150 for website and newsletters, $4,250 for community activities, $2,500 for Interfaith, and $2,100 for mandatory insurance. Revenues are a projected $19,100 from the Township, Farmer’s Market and special events. The village association board also highlighted its achievements for the last fiscal year, April 1, 2016, through March 31, 2017. The major activity, again, was the highly successful Farmer’s Market which now operates 50 weeks a year, rain or shine. Our annual Splash Day in August was a perennial hit. The Garden Tower project with Wilkerson Middle School has proven to be a winner. The village association weekly newsletter goes out to over 3,300 homes. All this is included in the annual report, available on the Grogan’s Mill Village Association website at http://www.grogansmillvillage.com
Do you know someone who has made a positive impact on our community? If you have someone in mind, please reach out to one of the Grogan’s Mill Village Association board members for the nomination process.
The village association is upgrading its website. More details to be announced, but you can always check for yourself.
Spring on the farm is producing a huge range of fruits and vegetables. Grab a friend and stop by on Saturdays where we have more than 30 vendors with a wide variety of goods. Check out the village association website, above, each Friday for details, or you can sign up for the village association weekly email blast. Profits from Farmer’s Market vendor fees are returned to the community through various philanthropic and community programs as noted in the Grogan’s Mill Village Association Annual Report.
Next month, we will begin reporting our monthly Yard of the Month winners. For up to six months, we will award $50 Randall’s gift certificates plus one month of bragging rights through a Yard of the Month sign posted in the winner’s front yard. If you would like to be considered, or have a neighbor you think deserves an award, let any Grogan’s Mill Village Association board member know.

At the village association’s March 20, 2017, annual planning meeting, the Grogan’s Mill Village Association board re-elected Marie Brannen as president, Bruce Cunningham as vice president, and Bob Leilich as treasurer. Edmund “Ned” Chapman was elected as secretary.
On March 21, 2017, Grogan’s Mill Village Association presented Hailey Elementary, Lamar Elementary, Wilkerson Intermediate, and Knox Junior High School with donations. Donations have been given every year since 2005, funded by income from the Farmer’s Market.
The Indian Springs Village Association would like to welcome our newest at-large board member, Enrique Rosero. We would also like to congratulate two current board members who will be officers this year, Tom Brown (Treasurer) and Alan Neely (Secretary). And finally, we are happy to announce that Mike Arendes has been re-elected as the Indian Springs Village Association President. We are a totally volunteer organization and thrive by the generosity of those residents who provide their time and talents to their community.
The Indian Springs Village Association meetings are held at The Woodlands Township, 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, except in July. We would love to have you join
us, and all Indian Springs residents are encouraged to attend. Agendas are posted on the village association website, and residents are invited to offer comments each month.

Another springtime Flea Market has passed and was a big success. Since Panther Creek Village Association started the event over 30 years ago, thousands of Woodlands residents and vendors from far and wide have enjoyed buying and selling bargains galore. So,
start thinking about the treasures you might sell or buy at the fall event. Watch www.woodlandsfleamarket.org for details.
Another way you can participate in the community events that help make The Woodlands a real hometown is to attend or, better yet, volunteer at Panther Creek events. Villagers help with the Earth Day cleanup and the Flea Market. Yes, we do some work, but usually have more fun.
Just around the corner is our annual Flag Day/Panther Creek Picnic, Saturday, June 17, 2017. Every year more residents turn out for this free and family-style outing at Ridgewood Park, 4192 Interfaith Way. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and treats will be provided. Bring the kids and their swimsuits as the pool will be open to all. After all the swimming and eating, a wondrous array of choices will be served at the snow cone truck. A brief American flag program and flag information will be presented. Bring any old flags that need to be respectfully retired. Be prepared for surprise visitors that the kids will want pictures with.
With baseball season well underway, join with your Panther Creek neighbors as we hop on custom coaches to take us down to a good old-fashioned baseball outing in Houston. Friday, September 22, 2017, the mighty Astros will host the Los Angeles Angels. Since we expect a victory, there will be a fireworks show afterwards, weather permitting. If you haven’t taken the kids to a big league baseball game yet, this is the year. Call your village association area rep. They are listed on our website below. Your $26 fare includes the custom coach transportation to and from the ball park and admission to the game.
Did you ever want to build a playground? How about building it with no additional cost or hammer bruised thumbs? You can! By simply collecting your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and boxes, and dental floss containers, you can donate these items that will be recycled and turned into playgrounds. Start collecting now and help Panther Creek lead seven other villages this November in this worthy project that will also help us win dollars for our scholarships. Watch this magazine for the date.
Join the Panther Creek Village Association board or simply attend a monthly meeting. Visit us at www.PantherCreekVillageAssociation.org

Do you feel like you have enough information to protect yourself and loved ones from contracting Zika? Read on to address some common concerns.
I’ve heard a lot about Zika, but why is it of concern?
The majority of people who contract the Zika virus will not show symptoms. Those with symptoms can expect flu-like aches, along with an itchy rash and red eyes. A small percentage of patients may develop a neurological disorder, Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, Zika is much more threatening to the health of unborn babies and has been linked to numerous birth defects such as a smaller head (microcephally) and brain damage.
How do people get Zika?
The Zika virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito in the Aedes genus. The virus can also be transmitted through unprotected sex and from an infected mother to her fetus. People who have recently traveled or are planning a trip to an area with active Zika transmission should take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
I have a mosquito misting system, so that means I’m protected, right?
Unfortunately it does not. These systems rely on the spray directly contacting the mosquito to be killed. Once the mist dissipates, the chemical does not provide any residual effect to control mosquitoes. Also, the Aedes mosquito is a daytime flier, and these systems dispense pesticide at night.
The position of the American Mosquito Control Association is that these systems lack data on their efficacy, promote insecticide resistance, and have negative impacts on other insect species. Reducing sources of standing water around your yard that are breeding habitat for mosquitoes is a more effective way to control mosquitoes before they become biting adults.
Please visit The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, for much more information, important resources to fight the bite at home, and links to relevant Zika apps from World Health Organization and the CDC.
Mosquitoes spread Zika and other viruses.
Daytime is the most dangerous Mosquitoes that spread Zika are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night.
Use insect repellent It works!
Look for the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone
Wear protective clothes
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants or use insect repellent. For extra protection, treat clothing with permethrin.
Mosquito-proof your home
Use screens on windows and doors. Use air conditioning when available. Keep mosquitoes from laying eggs near standing water.
InThe Woodlands and across the region and state, more and more individuals are joining the ranks of informed citizens who choose to conserve this critical resource. Asking the simple questions of “Where does our water come from?” and “What are some practical ways to reduce the amount of water I use?” are now part of the dialogue for those seeking to be smarter water users.
Over the past seven years, smart water consumers have reduced the per-person use in households from 150 gallons to 92 gallons of water per day? Local and regional water resource specialists will offer current knowledge on ways to use water wisely at the Smarter About Water Seminar, Saturday, May 13, 2017, at The Woodlands Emergency Training Center.

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch Emergency Preparedness Event will be held Saturday, June 10, 2017, at The Woodlands Township Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. CenterPoint Energy is the presenting sponsor this year.
Residents and employees of businesses in The Woodlands are invited to drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the free event. Visit with public safety and community service providers about emergency preparedness, view displays and demonstrations, hear a presentation from a National Weather Service forecaster, see inside public safety vehicles and receive free promotional items and more at this fun and educational event!
“At the start of every hurricane season, we’re reminded of the importance of advanced preparation, and just as CenterPoint Energy has an emergency operations plan should a hurricane strike, we urge customers to have their own emergency plan as well,” said Pierce Prater, Service Consultant Supervisor for CenterPoint Energy. “No two storms are alike, which makes it difficult to forecast what the exact damage to our electric system could be and how long outages could last; however, customers need to be prepared to be without power for two weeks or possibly longer, depending on the severity of the storm.”
Attendees will be able to drop by the booths to visit with representatives, and pick up free handouts. Planned presentations include Hurricane Predictions for 2017 from a National Weather Service forecaster and The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch. Participate in a CPR demonstration from the Montgomery County Hospital District, and sign up for Township notifications and Smart911. Also, emergency preparedness videos for the Houston region will be shown. The Boy Scouts of America – Tall Timbers plan to provide an Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Counselor and offer a demonstration. A schedule of presentations will be posted on The Woodlands Township website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov prior to the event.
“I have always said the true first responders are our citizens,” states The Woodlands Fire Department Chief Alan B. Benson. “The better they can prepare and sustain, the quicker we can restore our community back to normal.”
Learn what steps you should take to be prepared for a hurricane or any emergency. Find out how to make an emergency plan, prepare an emergency kit, stay informed in an emergency and how to get involved in the community. Learn how you and your neighbors can work together. Whether you live here or work here, find out where information will be available in The Woodlands before, during and after an emergency. “An important piece of any emergency
plan is working together and utilizing all of your resources,” says Township Director of Law Enforcement Marian Leck. “Don’t wait for an emergency to get to know your neighbor!” For more information, please contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch at 281-210-3800, or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ neighborhoodwatch

Anew curbside textile recycling service starts this summer. Through a partnership with Simple Recycling, The Woodlands Township will offer a convenient way to recycle textiles, shoes and home goods. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 85 percent of textiles end up in our landfills each year with only 15 percent being donated or repurposed in some fashion. “This program is an easy way to keep reusable materials out of the landfill,” said Township Board Chairman Gordy Bunch. “The average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles each year, which amounts to more than five percent of our municipal waste.”
The program is free and easy to use. Simple Recycling will mail each household guidelines and custom printed recycling bags. Fill your bags with textiles, shoes, and even household items, such as toys, books and kitchenware. The bags are collected curbside on the same day as your trash and recycling; no sign-up or ordering is necessary. Simple Recycling then sorts each item for reuse, repurpose or recycle.
“By offering the convenience for residents to simply deposit items at the curb on their normal curbside recycling day, at no cost, there is no reason for any of this material to end up in the landfill,” says Adam Winfield, President of Simple Recycling. This service is provided entirely by Simple Recycling with no cost to the Township or its residents. In fact, it will generate revenue of $20 per ton for materials collected. Reduced landfill fees increase the savings. “We encourage residents to continue to donate items to their local charities. This program will help catch those items that didn’t make it to a charity and were destined for the landfill,” says Chairman Bunch.
For more information, please visit the Simple Recycling website, www.simplerecycling.com, or call The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800.
Whether you own your own kayak, are thinking of buying one or are just renting for the day, remember these 10 tips for safety during your next adventure on the water.
1. Take an on-water course. Being able to self-rescue is one of the most valuable kayak lessons to learn and keep practicing. Visit www.americancanoe.org for a list of instructors near you.
2. Wear your lifejacket. Texas requires all kayakers under the age of 13 to wear an appropriately fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejacket at all times.
3. Be safe in cold water. When water temperature is 60 degrees or cooler, a wetsuit is highly recommended to prevent cold water illnesses. Always check the forecast before your trip and plan accordingly.
4. Always be aware of the surroundings. Most waterways have lanes of traffic to follow, navigational buoys or lights to direct passing boats. Be aware of the differences in boating laws for inland waterways and coastal waterways.
5. Use your resources. Connect with other kayakers in the area to help you scout out your trip or use one of the numerous paddling apps available on your smartphone.
6. Leave no trace. Remember to always pack out all trash, and do not disturb the wildlife. Minimize your impact to the shore or beach when launching, portaging, scouting or taking out your kayak.
7. Be in control. Know how to move your boat forward, backward, sideways and how to stop. Drinking and drug use will impair your ability to control your kayak, make smart decisions about hazards, traffic and response time to other dangers on the water.
8. Plan ahead. Know the water you are paddling, file a float plan with someone not going on the water with
you, so they know where to find you and when you plan to return.
9. Before your trip, check the 4 Ws –Wind, Weather, Water and Waves. Be prepared to make adjustments to your trip due to changing weather, high winds and changing water levels and waves.
10. Never paddle alone. Whatever your reason for kayaking, bring a buddy with you. A companion can come to your aid if you are in trouble.

Is there a dog in your neighborhood that barks at all hours? Is there is a cat that is destroying a neighbor’s garden? Inform the pet’s owner. He or she may not be aware that the offending animal is his or hers. If your neighbor should approach you to say that your dog’s barking is affecting others, consider the possibility that it could be true. The next step is to consider a constructive solution to the dilemma.
Last but not least, please pick up after your pet. Pet waste bags, plastic newspaper and grocery bags can be used to pick up after your pet and then placed in the trash. Leashes are required once the animal leaves your property.
Don’t let your pet spoil the natural beauty of The Woodlands for someone else. Take every opportunity to be a responsible pet owner. It shows pride in your community as well as respect for your neighbors and love for your pet.
