The Woodlands Fire Department Earns Prestigious ISO 1 Rating

TheWoodlands Township Board of Directors has officially announced that The Woodlands Fire Department has earned the prestigious ISO rating of 1 from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), Inc.’s Public Protection Department. There are only 60 out of 47,000 communities nationwide that have achieved this status, according to ISO records.

“The Township has been working toward this goal for many years,” said Township Chairman Bruce Tough. “Predominately, building fire stations 6, 7, 8 and the Emergency Training Center contributed to the successful completion of this goal. Congratulations to Chief Benson and his staff on this accomplishment,” he said. continued on page 14

TheWoodlands Township has three parks with spraygrounds/splash pads, that are now open. Spraygrounds combine the sensations of water movements and interactive play elements. The colorful, action-packed features spray, gush, dump and pour water from a variety of whimsical play features. These spraygrounds are located at May Valley Park, Sawmill Park and Timarron Park.

May Valley Park is located in the Village of Sterling Ridge at 11598 May Valley Circle, The Woodlands 77354. Sawmill Park, which is part of Sawmill Pool, is located in the Village of Grogan’s Mill at 2200 Millpark Dr., The Woodlands 77380. Make sure emergency procedures are in place for your workplace or school.

Talk to your employer about emergency plans for the building where you work. Think about other places that you and family members regularly spend time, like your child’s school. Talk to administrators at those places about their emergency plans as well.

Ways to be safe at work and school:

• Make sure evacuation routes and tornado shelter locations are marked on a map and posted in the building.

• Hold emergency training and drills.

• Help create an emergency kit for the facility.

• Know where fire extinguishers and Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are located.

Disasters can happen at any time.

If you are away from home do you know where to find safe shelter locations?

Do you know what the emergency procedures are for your child’s school or for your workplace?

Will people who count on you know what to do if you can’t reach them?

Know how to make sure you and your loved ones are safe in a disaster, no matter where you are.

Give emergency kits to people who count on you (college students, elderly parents, etc.).

Put together basic emergency kits for people who may not be able to do so for themselves or for those who may not think of doing it for themselves. Show them what is in the kit and talk to them about disasters. Make sure the kit meets their specific needs. For instance, if someone takes prescription medicine, include a list of medications and dosages. For a college student, make sure the kit is small enough to store in the space they have available.

COLLEGE STUDENTS

Talk to your college student about how you will stay in touch if a disaster occurs. Make sure they understand that cell phones may not work during a disaster. Choose an emergency contact who does not live near you or the college.

Arrange with your student to call that person if they can’t reach you during a disaster. Visit the Web site for your student’s college to find out about the school’s disaster plans and procedures. Some colleges will provide a phone number that you can call in an emergency. If you don’t find the number on the Web site, call the admissions office and ask. Add the number to your emergency contact list. Make sure your student knows to call you if there is an emergency on campus. Also, ensure your student is registered for any emergency notification system on their campus.

INSURANCE

Talk to your insurance agent to find out if your policy covers your student’s belongings while they are away at school. You may need an additional renter’s policy. Check with your health insurance carrier to find out where your student can find covered healthcare at school.

WORK, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

Know how others in your community will respond in a disaster.

Talk to other people when you are developing an emergency plan for a school, workplace or organization. Get input from people who work there and other people who use the building. It is especially important to include people with disabilities. Think about asking your local public safety agencies to review the plan. Make sure that what you are planning won’t interfere with emergency response.

Find out if your community has designated evacuation routes for floods, hurricanes, or other disasters. Include that information in your plans. Make sure that the plans you develop will work for everyone.

Remember, emergency preparedness doesn’t have to be hard or expensive.

In this column TWCERT publishes different steps to help individuals, families, and businesses prepare for all hazards, and become disaster resilient. We encourage you to follow the plan throughout the year and to “stay informed & be ready” by following us on the web, Facebook or Twitter for more timely preparedness tips.

The Woodlands Fire Department - continued from page 3

“ This accomplishment is an example of the board’s and the community’s commitment toward providing exemplary public safety services. We are proud to serve the residents and businesses of The Woodlands, ” said Fire Chief Alan B. Benson.

The State Fire Marshall’s Office presented a plaque to The Woodlands Fire Department at a recent Township board meeting. The ISO 1 classification is effective May 1, 2014.

ISO’s Public Protection Classification (PPCTM) Service gauges the fire protection capability of local fire departments to respond to structure fires. ISO collects information on a community’s public fire protection and analyzes the data, then assigns a Public Protection Classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents the best public protection, and Class 10 indicates no recognized protection.

A statement from ISO reads, “This means your community’s fire suppression services are improving in the face of the demands of a changing environment.

Congratulations on this recognition of your commitment to serve the needs of your community’s property owners and residents.”

Almost all United States insurers of homes and business property use ISO’s PPC in calculating premiums. Generally, the price of fire insurance in a community with a good PPC is substantially lower than in a community with a poor PPC, assuming all other factors are equal.

A community’s PPC depends on:

• the fire department, including equipment, staffing, training, and geographic distribution of fire companies;

• the water supply system, including condition and maintenance of hydrants, and a careful evaluation of the amount

of available water compared with the amount needed to suppress fires; and

• fire alarm and communications systems, including telephone systems, telephone lines, staffing, and dispatching systems.

ISO is a leading source of information, products and services about property and liability risk. ISO provides statistical, actuarial, underwriting, claims, and related information and analyses to insurers, reinsurers, agents, insurance regulators, and other government agencies. For more information, please visit the ISO mitigation Web site at www.isomitigation.com. For more information on The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department, please visit www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/firedepartment.

Grogan’s Mill

With construction nearing completion on Grogan’s Mill Road between Woodlands Parkway and S. Millbend, all entrances to and from the Grogan’s Mill Shopping Center will soon be open. If you have been hesitating to shop or dine because of difficulty getting in or out, that will be history. Our merchants are more eager than ever to serve you.

At the Grogan’s Mill monthly meeting on March 17, new directors Jane Georges and Jody Ronzio were welcomed to the board. They are enthusiastic about participating, and we are delighted to have them as valued members of our community organization. Jody volunteered and was promptly elected Secretary while Jane was appointed as the new VP of Government Relations, representing our village at Township board meetings.

Dana Denton, Vice President for the last fiscal year, was elected as President for 2014, Marie Brennan is our new Vice President, Bob Leilich was re-elected as Treasurer and Jody Ronzio was elected as Secretary. Our board consists of a great group of people who represent our community and work to enhance the village’s economic and social life.

Speaking of Farmers’ Market, spring is in full bloom at our vendor’s booths. Check our Web site or newsletter for upcoming children’s days and holiday theme events. We’ll be hosting a special “Craft Day” on May 3, just in time to find something unique and special for Mother’s Day gifting. Profits from the market will support Grogan’s Mill schools, the Interfaith Food Pantry, college scholarships for graduating Grogan’s Mill high school seniors, plus other worthwhile community projects. If you don’t receive our weekly Farmers’ Market e-blast, sign up on our Web site under the Farmers’ Market tab.

On April 6, the village board held its annual retreat to plan programs and budget for the year. Details on these programs and budget can be found at www.grogansmillvillage.com. If you have a good idea that you would like the village to consider, it is never too late to attend one of the meetings (third Monday of the month, 6:30 p.m. at the Township Building). You can also submit suggestions and comments to vicepresident@gmva.org.

The Grogan’s Mill Yard of the Month will run from April to September 2014. If you would like to nominate yourself (don’t be bashful) or a neighbor, please let us know. It’s worth a $50 gift card for Randall’s, and you get to proudly display the Yard of the Month sign for 30 days.

MAY 2014 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

WOODLANDS THE BIKE

Each May, tens of thousands of commuters around the country participate in Bike to Work Day, an annual celebration of which The Woodlands is participating for the second consecutive year. Sponsored by Bike The Woodlands Coalition (BTWC) and The Woodlands Township, Bike to Work Day encourages bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work.

Commuting trends are changing dramatically, and more and more Americans realize that bicycling is a practical, reliable, and economical means to get to and from work—and it’s also healthy and fun. The Census Bureau reports that more than 723,000 Americans use a bicycle as the primary means of getting to work, up 43 percent since 2000. And for Bicycle Friendly Communities, bicycle commuting is up 80 percent since 2000!

The Woodlands was recognized last year as a Bicycle Friendly Community, which is a designation awarded to selected communities by the League

of American Bicyclists. There are four BFC designation levels, each increasing in “friendliness,” and they are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The Woodlands has a Bronze designation and was rated on the following five criteria:

• Engineering: Creating safe and convenient places to ride and park

• Education: Giving people of all ages and abilities skills and confidence

• Encouragement: Creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling

• Enforcement: Ensuring safe roads for all users

• Evaluation & Planning: Planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option

Bike The Woodlands Coalition is working with The Woodlands Township, Montgomery County and others to help create and maintain bicycle-friendly corridors that have either “approved and signed” bike lanes, or better yet, “protected” bike lanes. This complete street design approach accommodates all users of our roadway system and encourages bicycle commuting to work. With many employees residing within 10 miles of The Woodlands’ four major employment centers, bicycle commuting

20 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2014

can help lessen traffic congestion and improve the health of those who participate. Bicycling is also good for business and local property values, because:

• Savvy companies seeking to attract Millennials and Gen X-ers locate in areas with bicycle-friendly commuting options.

• Workers who bike to work are healthier, leading to reduced health care/insurance costs.

• Property values are increased by adjacent/nearby bike paths.

• Retail businesses and restaurants in bicycle friendly areas benefit by establishing an “urban oasis,” a

sense of community with less vehicle traffic, parking congestion and accessibility to bicycle travel routes.

Regardless of age, everyone can enjoy bicycling. From the first time pedaling without training wheels to a lazy afternoon ride in retirement, bicycling can be enjoyed at any age. We look forward to your participation in Bike to Work Day on May 13.

SENSE of SECURITY

When You Go On Vacation

Sign up for the Vacation Watch Program

Having peace of mind is invaluable while you vacation with your family. With the Vacation Watch program you can leave your residence knowing that law enforcement will be looking after your home for you. With the Vacation Watch program, patrol officers will regularly drive by your home, check doors and windows to ensure that they are secure, and investigate anything on your property that looks suspicious. If anything is found out of the ordinary during these checks, your emergency contact will be notified. Your entire neighborhood will benefit by having a patrol car in your neighborhood up to three times a day!**

To sign up for the Vacation Watch, simply visit the Web site below that corresponds with your residence.

Montgomery County 936-442-7797 www.mocosheriff.com, click on the Crime Prevention tab, then on the Vacation Watch icon Harris County, Village of Creekside Park ................... 281-376- 3472 www.cd4.hctx.net, click on online services

Consider adding these to your “to do” list:

• Cancel your paper and mail deliveries or have a trusted neighbor pick them up.

• Leave a key with a neighbor or friend. Ask that the house be checked periodically.

• Install a timer on lights so that the house appears occupied.

• Ensure that the lawn is maintained in your absence.

• Store all valuables out of sight.

• Leave a car in the driveway or allow a neighbor to park there.

• Additional tips can be found on the Vacation Checklist, also located on the Township Web site. (see note below)

**The frequency of home checks will be dependent upon call volume in your area. Active calls for service will take precedence. Always notify law enforcement if you leave later or come home early. Additional crime prevention tips can be found on The Woodlands Township Web site: www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov under the Neighborhood Services department. Here you can find the Vacation Information form to complete and give to a trusted neighbor. This form will provide additional important information in the event of an emergency. Cycle & Soak Saves Money and Creates Healthier Grass

Untoldthousands of gallons of drinking water pour onto The Woodlands streets (and into the storm sewers) during lawn irrigation for much of the growing season. Much of that runoff is caused by running the irrigation zones too long. More water is being placed on the ground than the soil can absorb at any given time.

Using a “cycle and soak” method is a much more efficient way to irrigate lawns. It’s simple, will help save water, and will develop a healthier and more deeplywatered lawn. By getting water deeply into the soil, grass roots will grow longer and deeper, making the plants more resistant to disease, drought and insect damage. Running each zone for 30 minutes, and then ending the irrigation event, doesn’t get the water down where it needs to be. And much of it runs off into the street. The “wetting front,” which is how far the water goes into the soil, will only be about two inches deep. That’s where the grass roots will stay, because there is no need for them to grow deeper. To grow deeper roots and to keep the water on the lawn instead of on the street, reduce each zone to seven minutes and run the cycle three times. During each soaking, capillary action in the soil will extend the “wetting front” down to where it’s needed.

If there is a rain event, there may be no need to irrigate. Installing a rain sensor will adjust your system to take into account the amount of rainfall—another easy way to save money and build a healthier lawn. The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency offers a 50 percent rebate (up to $150) for rain sensors and other water-saving devices.

The Odd/Even Defined Irrigation Schedule is in effect. Lawns need only an inch of water a week, and even less if it rains. For more information, please visit www.wjpa.org.
