Cochran’s Crossing

t he Cochran’s Crossing Village association helped lead cheers for runners in t he Woodlands Marathon. Cochran’s Crossing Village association board members and residents, along with support from Kroger and Optimum emergency room, displayed a fiesta theme at the corner of research Forest Drive and Gosling. Dabney Wisenbaker, overall cheer volunteer leader for the event and a member of the Cochran’s Crossing Village association, reported many of the runners (particularly those doing the full marathon) were grateful for the Gatorade and water handed out at the Cochran’s Crossing Village association cheering site.

Put these events on your calendar: t he Cochran’s Crossing Village association annual pool party will be

held saturday, June 8, 2013, 3 p.m., at Bear Branch Park. Plans are also being made for participation in the annual 4th of July parade.

Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack was the featured speaker at the Cochran’s Crossing Village association annual meeting. t his is part of the board’s continued effort to keep up-to-date on matters affecting this area and to communicate questions and concerns to key representatives of the county government and t he Woodlands township.

at a recent Cochran’s Crossing Village association meeting, considerable attention was given to concerns by a homeowner about the effect of park developments near a residential area. It appears the township is aware of this issue and is taking steps to mitigate the concerns mentioned at the meeting. Cochran’s Crossing Village association residents that have any concerns, questions, or recommendations that can improve our community are encouraged to attend the association meetings, which are held the fourth tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at t he Woodlands township.

record crowds joined the Farmer’s Market on March 16, 2013, as the market hosted a special Children’s Day featuring live farm animals, a fire truck, a talented balloon artist and more. Progress is being made on the rebuilding of the walk/bike path bridge between Grogan’s Point and the Grogan’s Mill shopping Center. Work was scheduled to be completed by mid-april, so hopefully you can now walk and bike the path again.

Many Grogan’s Mill residents and Grogan’s Mill Village association board members turned out on a chilly saturday, March 2, 2013, to cheer more than 7,400 runners of t he Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon. Hot coffee and fresh donuts softened the chill. Our cheer station was near the entrance to H-e -B on Lake robbins, at the finish line of both the half and full marathons. Grogan’s Mill Village association received significant income from the event to be used in support of its community work.

two new Grogan’s Mill Village association board members were elected in February: Christie Collins and Jacky Waters. at the March meeting the 2013 officers were elected: George Van Horn, president; Dana Denton, vice president; Jacky Waters, secretary; and Bob Leilich, treasurer. We welcome our new members and thank those who served this past year.

Congratulations to Scott and Linsey Mills on being the April 2013 Grogan’s Mill Yard of the Month!

good good soil makes plants

aproductive soil looks healthy. It’s crumbly when squeezed in your hand, and it’s dark and full of organic matter. Healthy soil means healthy lawns.

Healthy soil will have half of a million microbes in every gram. these microbes include bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, microscopic insects and mites.

Microorganisms are essential to soil health. as they go through their life cycles, they help decompose organic compounds. they also help plants obtain nutrients by binding minerals in the soil and making them available to plants. these tiny organisms help improve soil structure, fight plant disease and insects, and, in the end, contribute their bodies to the overall organic matter in the soil. In fact, one acre foot of soil may contain 10,000 to 50,000 pounds of beneficial microbes.

In addition to microbes, there may be 10 or more earthworms in every square foot. In fact, earthworms are a good barometer of good, productive soil. earthworms turn the soil, and convert organic material into nutrients for plants. a healthy earthworm population in an acre of soil can turn over eight tons of soil in a year. that’s a lot of work!

Good soil with five percent organic matter can hold almost two gallons of water per cubic foot of soil. a yard size of 1,000 square feet with that amount of organic matter can hold almost 2,000 gallons of water. this helps create longer root systems in grass plants and makes them more resistant to disease.

using organic fertilizers and minimizing the application of chemical fertilizers can go a long way toward maintaining a healthy population of microbes and earthworms. Good, healthy soil is the secret to a good, healthy lawn and garden.

Mosquitoes

Ready or Not, Here They Come! It’s Time to Fight the Bite!

as the weather warms, mosquitoes will once again be popping up in your neighborhood unless we all work together to fight the bite! Last year was a very busy year for mosquito abatement professionals in the state of texas. Because the Woodlands has been a hot spot for mosquito activity and mosquito-borne disease in the past, the texas Department of state Health (tDsH) contacted the township to find out why we were not seeing more sick people considering the high numbers of disease-carrying mosquito samples sent in last summer. Perhaps the many years of education through this publication and other venues has had an impact! surveillance in the Woodlands has identified more than 44 different species to date. Fortunately, most are considered nuisance mosquitoes. the Culex quinquefasciatus, carrier of West Nile Virus and other diseases, poses the greatest concern to human health. In the early years of West Nile (WNv) activity, blue jay populations were decimated. as the population recovered the assumption had been that the surviving birds in that species were able to survive the virus. But last year blue jays began dying again. Because of that and the big increase in human cases of WNv everywhere last year, concern was raised that the virus may have mutated. texas Medical Branch ( ut MB) are doing genetic studies to determine if that is the case. t here are potentially serious repercussions for humans if the virus has changed.

t here are no quick fixes to control mosquito-borne disease. Individuals need to be vigilant about irrigation practices and monitor containers holding water and standing water in yards. In every case where there have been high numbers of the disease-carrying species found, water usage records show that there is at least one household in the neighborhood that is significantly overwatering. t his not only wastes precious water resources, but also creates mosquito breeding sites.

Often the breeding site is not in the yard of the person who is overwatering but in the low yard in the neighborhood, the greenbelt behind the neighborhood, or in a storm drain. storm drains where neighbors sweep grass and leaves are especially problematic as this creates a stagnant water puddle, which is the perfect environment for the Culex mosquito.

each person must take personal precautions to prevent being bitten. Wear long, light, loose clothes and use repellent. Be sure to follow label directions.

recent years have seen an uptick in dengue fever in the southern united states. the main carrier for this in our area is the Aedes albopictis or asian tiger. this invasive species is an aggressive biter but weak flyer and is active in mornings and late afternoon prior to sunset. It is strictly a container breeder so when surveillance shows high numbers of asian tigers, chances are someone within a very close distance has a container holding water. Dengue fever has not come to the Woodlands, but there is some worrisome potential. By being vigilant about regularly checking your yard for any containers, including natural containers like treeholes, residents can significantly reduce numbers of this mosquito.

Neighbors working together can dramatically reduce the mosquitoes in the area. Neighborhood, church and community groups can schedule a mosquito abatement presentation or report mosquito issues by calling t he Woodlands township at 281-210-3800.
