Presents
“The way home” sculpture DEDICATION IN TOWN GREEN PARK
Following the weekend festivities, residents and visitors are invited to attend the historic unveiling of “The Way Home” sculpture, dedicated to all active-duty personnel and to veterans of all military branches and conflicts. The dedication will take place in the east side of Town Green Park at 4 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2015.
The sculpture commemorates Army Cpl. Cory C. Kosters and Army Cpl. Zach R. Endsley who bravely gave their lives for their country in 2007. The Greater Woodlands Public Art Foundation originally commissioned the sculpture, created by Edd Hayes, who is known as the official Texas state sculptor. The photo above shows a maquette, or miniature, of the sculpture that is currently housed at The Woodlands Township.
With a recommendation from The Woodlands Township Economic Development Committee, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors voted unanimously to waive the requirement for a $50,000 perpetual maintenance fund for the sculpture and allocated $81,900 for completion of the project. The monument and sculpture will be a permanent way for The Woodlands Township residents and visitors to remember and honor active-duty personnel, veterans and all those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
BIKE WORK DAY to
By Randall CadeMay is Bike Month in The Woodlands, and for the third consecutive year,
The Woodlands Township, in partnership with the Bike The Woodlands Coalition, will celebrate Bike to Work Day, Tuesday, May 12, 2015, from 6:30 to 9 a.m.
If you are not already one of The Woodlands’ growing population of active bicycle commuters, why not give it a try? You might discover the simple pleasure of commuting on two wheels and wonder why you haven’t tried it before. Why is The Woodlands a great place to ride to work?
The Supportive Community: The Woodlands is a designated Bicycle Friendly Community, currently with a bronze designation, with a view to achieving silver. This designation is extended by the League of American Bicyclists and is based on a number of stringent requirements which The Woodlands has met.

Location: Most residents who work here live within eight miles of their workplace. We are fortunate to have shoulders along many of our roads, including wide shoulders on the major conduits into the Town Center, Research Forest and the Lake Woodlands business centers.
Climate: Even on the hottest summer days, the self-generated breeze is a pleasure, especially when riding home after a day immersed in an air-conditioned building. Even on the coldest winter days, five minutes down the road, you’ll warm up and revel in being a part of the great outdoors.
Health and Fitness: A 15- to 30-minute workout has benefits well beyond the ride. You arrive at the office invigorated and ready to work. Another ride home at the end of the day and you are well on your way to a fit and healthy lifestyle.
So, what do you need to do?
Visit www.bikethewoodlands.org to register online. Fill out your shirt size, specify your check-in location, and get ready to ride!
There will be two event checkin points: the main hub will be at the new Whole Foods Market ® in Hughes Landing, and a secondary hub at the Black Walnut Cafe on New Trails near Research Forest Drive. When you arrive, sign in, pick up your T-shirt and head off to work – or, stay a while to chat with other riders and supporters.
Join with the Bike The Woodlands Coalition by showing your support for creating a better community through bicycling by riding to work.
Above all, be safe and follow the rules of the road (or pathways).

WORK, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
Disasters can happen at any time. If you are away from home, do you know where to find safe shelter locations? Know how to make sure you and your loved ones are safe in a disaster, no matter where you are.
Talk to your employer about emergency plans for the building where you work.
Think about other places that you and family members regularly spend time, like your child’s school. Talk to administrators at those places about their emergency plans as well.
Give emergency kits to people who count on you, like college students, elderly parents, etc.
Put together basic emergency kits for people who may not be able to do so for themselves or for those who may not think of doing it for themselves. Make sure the kit meets their specific needs. For instance, if someone takes prescription medicine, include a list of medications and dosages. For a college student, make sure the kit is small enough to store in the space they have available.
Talk to your college student about how you will stay in touch if a disaster occurs. Choose an emergency contact who does not live near you or the college. Make sure they understand that cell phones may not work during a disaster.
Visit the website for your student’s college to find out about the school’s disaster plans and procedures. Some colleges will provide a phone number that you can call in an emergency. If you don’t find the number on the website, call the admissions office and ask. Add the number to your emergency contact list.
Also check with your health insurance carrier to find out where your student can find covered healthcare at school.
Know how others in your community will respond in a disaster.
Find out if your community has designated evacuation routes for floods,

hurricanes or other disasters. Include that information in your plans. Make sure that the plans you develop will work for everyone.

Rob Fleming Park Receives National Landscape Award of Excellence
BIOLandscape and Maintenance, a Yellowstone Landscape company, and staff of The Woodlands Township’s Parks and Recreation Department are proud to announce that The Woodlands’ Rob Fleming Park was recently honored as a winner at the National Landscape Awards of Excellence Program sponsored by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET).
The prestigious award recognizes Rob Fleming Park as one of the most outstanding commercial landscaping projects in the country. BIO Landscape submitted Rob Fleming Park to the awards’ judging panel, made up of landscape industry experts, as an example of The Woodlands’ commitment to creating and preserving the natural beauty of the community’s landscape.
The entry made special mention of the working partnership between BIO and The Woodlands Township staff, and the judges noted the coordination required to maximize the park’s benefits for residents of The Woodlands. The judges also evaluated detailed photographs of the park, the specifics of the park’s landscape maintenance program, the environmental best practices employed by the BIO Landscape team, and the park’s highly active event schedule. BIO Landscape’s summary to the judges included the following:
At the trailhead to the George Mitchell Nature Preserve, you find Rob Fleming Park, one of the largest and most popular parks among the 132 parks maintained by BIO Landscape and The Woodlands Township’s Parks and Recreation Department. The 50-acre flagship park features a magnificent craftsmanstyle stone pavilion, a central pond, a natural forest area, a newly refurbished playground, and a nearly 100,000 square-foot grand lawn which hosts concerts and Township events throughout the year. The park also includes a 13-acre aquatic center, home to The Woodlands’ largest swimming pool, a splash park, water slides, and a 500-foot lazy river.
The commercial landscape professionals at BIO Landscape and Maintenance are proud to partner with the staff of The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department and grateful for the opportunity to serve as The Woodlands Township’s landscape maintenance partner.
Congratulations to The Woodlands Township and Rob Fleming Park on winning the National Landscape Award of Excellence.

Simple,
Solutions to Win the Battle Against Lawn Fungal Diseases
By Bob Dailey
Fungal problems are a fact of life in Southeast Texas, where fungus is the main disease vector in plants. Most soils are full of fungal spores. Some are beneficial. Some, harmless. And some, like the fungi that cause take-all patch, brown spot or dollar spot, are problematic. Given the right circumstances, unwanted fungus can become a serious situation for your lawn. The most common “right circumstances” are:
Improper
mowing,
specifically mowing too low The leaves of any plant are how it makes food. Crew-cutting lawns takes away most of the food-producing grass blades, allowing the ground to dry out, and allows too much heat (or cold) to penetrate into the soil, killing beneficial organisms. Solution: Set your lawn mower to the highest mowing level, or ask your lawn service to do it.
Compacted Soil
Soil begins to compact when deprived of organic material, micro-organisms, earthworms and other beneficial organisms. Compacted soil exists throughout The Woodlands. Solution: Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and fertilizers disrupt the soil’s ecosystem, and kill the organisms necessary for good soil. Apply organic material at least twice a year (mid-April and mid-October are the best times). Spread it about ½ to ¾ of an inch deep and rake it in with a leaf rake. Use a mulching lawnmower. Since most of the grass’s nutrients are in its blades, mulching it back into the soil re-introduces nitrogen and other materials into the soil. Finally, if not planning to compost leaves, mulch them into the lawn as well.
Fertilizing
Too much fertilizer can cause fungal diseases to activate. It can also kill beneficial organisms. Too much fertilizer will green up a lawn quickly, but will not protect it from fungus. Solution: Use an organic, slow-release fertilizer on your lawn, and avoid using too much. Follow the instructions on the package exactly.
Watering
Watering lawns every day, or giving a lawn more than an inch of water per week is a sure way to encourage fungal diseases. Solution: For in-ground sprinkler users, put a rain gauge in each zone (or move it around). If each zone measures an inch, then the irrigation system is set correctly. If the lawn receives more than an inch, reset the controller. It may seem counterintuitive, but using an inch of water (or less if it rains) will actually create a deeper root system and stronger, more disease-resistant plants. The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency offers a rebate of 50 percent on the purchase and installation of water-saving devices, such as rain sensors and ET controllers (with a cap of $150).

No Interruption in Trash Service on Majority of Holidays in 2015
By Amber GeorgeThe Township’s contracted waste hauler, Waste Management, will pick up trash, recycling and yard waste on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2015). For more information, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/holidaytrash. In years past, a number of holidays caused waste pickup to be delayed by one day if a regular service day fell on a holiday. New for 2015, the only holidays that will be subject to a one-day delay in trash, recycling and yardwaste pickup are Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2015, trash, recycling and yardwaste service will continue uninterrupted for the Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day holidays. For more information on recycling and curbside guidelines, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/recycling, or call The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800.

Cochran’s Crossing Village Association has a continuing goal of keeping the residents better connected and fostering a sense of community. Much of this is through “spirit” events. One of the best examples of those in Cochran’s Crossing will be the annual end-of-school pool party at Bear Branch Pool. This free event, open to all residents, will be June 6, 2015, from 1 to 4 p.m. Kona Ice will be on hand as well as other community organizations.
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association also provides a way for residents of the village to express their concerns about matters affecting

Cochran’s Crossing and The Woodlands as a whole. For example, at a recent board meeting a resident let the sheriff’s deputies know there was a concern with parking for The Woodlands High School. Vehicles were being parked in nearby residential areas. As a result, the streets could be blocked for larger trucks and even school buses. Village residents were assured the issue will be followed up by the MCSO.
Businesses have also found the village associations are important contact points. Prior to opening, Whole Foods representatives came to the village meeting to let the members know how interested they are in having a good relationship with the community.
In addition to monthly reports from Township Director Mike Bass, recent village meetings have also included The Woodlands Director of Parks and Recreation Chris Nunes, County Judge Craig Doyle and a presentation on the Grand Parkway.

Creekside Park
Hello to all Creekside Park village residents and welcome to our May flowers. Spring is in full bloom after a very wet winter. Creekside Park residents and visitors have enjoyed the hard work of our village association and the commitment of the association to be an active group in our village and The Woodlands community.
In January, the 6th Annual Winter Festival and Chili Cook-Off, one of Creekside Park’s biggest events, was held at the Rob Fleming Park and Pavilion. The many residents who attended were treated to great music, kids’ events and of course great food, including some awesome chili by local cookers. The festival got off to an early start with the snow sledding hill which concluded with snowball fun
EVENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
at the end of the event. Kids of all ages enjoyed face painting, crafts, train rides and a petting zoo with pony rides. Hot dogs, chips and drinks were provided to all; however, a special thank-you goes to our chili cookers for participating in this wonderful event.
A special shout-out goes to the winning team, VooDoo Chili! Second place was won by Koinonia Kookers, third place was won by Killer Bees and Best Decorated Tent went to Fire in the Hole. The event raised $200 for the education fund, and the winners of the BMW/Mini weekend car were Mike Casey and Denise Torok.
February brought runners from all over, eager to participate in The Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon. Whether you ran the race or were there to cheer your favorite runner or runners on to the finish line, you probably spotted our Creekside Park volunteers at the Mile 8 Cheer Station. Their Mardi Gras theme and quirky signs made the runners smile during a very tough event.
Creekside Park continues to flourish with new residents and the opening of new stores and restaurants in the Creekside Park Village Green. If you have not visited the Green, the nicer weather is an excuse to get out and enjoy the shops and restaurants.
Save the date: The Creekside Park’s annual community pool party and picnic will be held at Wendtwoods Pool on June 6, 2015, from noon to 3 p.m. Fun activities and food will be offered to all who attend, and no pass needed for this great event – just your swimsuits and towels!

Also, Interfaith of The Woodlands will receive $3,000 to help support its expanding community services, up from $1,000 in fiscal year 2014 - 2015.
All of the incumbent officers were re-elected for the 2015 - 2016 fiscal year: President Dana Denton, Vice President Marie Brannen, Treasurer Bob Leilich, Secretary Jody Ronzio, and VP Government Relations Jane Georges.
With funds from last year’s budget, we are proud to have contributed $1,000 to the anticipated construction of the Veterans Memorial to be located at Town Green Park. The dedication ceremony is set for Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2015, at 4 p.m.
The Grogan’s Mill Farmers Market has grown tremendously over the past few years and is serving so many people outside of Grogan’s Mill that it is being renamed to “The Woodlands Farmers Market at Grogan’s Mill.” Come see us. Panther Creek
Another springtime Flea Market has passed and was a big success. Since Panther Creek Village Association started the event 30 years ago, many thousands of The Woodlands residents and vendors from far and wide have enjoyed buying and selling bargains galore. Start thinking about the treasures you might sell or buy at the fall event. Watch www.woodlandsfleamarket.org for details.
Another way you can participate in the community events that help make The Woodlands a real hometown is to attend, or better yet, volunteer at Panther Creek events. Villagers help with the Earth Day GreenUp and the Flea Market. Yes, we do some work but usually have more fun.
Just around the corner is our annual Flag Day/Panther Creek Picnic on Saturday, June 13, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Every year, more residents turn out for this free, family-style outing at Ridgewood Park on Interfaith Way. Free

hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and treats will be provided. Bring the kids and their swimsuits as the pool will be open to all.
After all the swimming and eating, a wondrous array of choices will be served at the snow cone truck. A brief American flag program and flag information will be presented. Bring any old flags that need to be respectfully retired. Be prepared for surprise visitors that the kids will want pictures with.
Every Panther Creek resident is invited to attend the monthly village association meetings where you can share your issues and questions with board members and possibly fill one of the current openings on the board. Each month we present for you reports from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors and the Residential Design and Review Committee.

Pathways
There are more than 200 scenic pathways through the forests of The Woodlands for all to enjoy. These pathways were specifically designed for people to experience the natural beauty of the forest and explore neighborhoods and parks. They were created as a stress-free way to enjoy the native scenery of the area while walking, jogging, rollerblading and bicycling through many areas of The Woodlands.
Although skates and bicycles are welcome on the pathways in The Woodlands, the pathways were not designed for high-speed activity. With a variety of different users on the paths, including strollers and wheelchairs, residents and visitors using these areas should be courteous and respectful of all other users. Pathway users are encouraged to use common sense when approaching others on the same path. This includes keeping to the right except to pass, staying alert, listening for audible signals to allow others to pass, traveling at a safe speed and being predictable.
For skaters and bicyclists looking for more extreme activity, The Woodlands has a number of wheel-friendly parks with ramps, banks, pipes, walls and jumps. There are also two dirt BMX parks located in The Woodlands for those in search of fun off-road biking activities.
Guidelines for pathway etiquette as well as an online interactive pathway map, can be found on the Township website at www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/parksandpathways. Printed maps of the parks and pathways in The Woodlands can also be picked up at the Township Town Hall at 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard or the Township Recreation Center at 5310 Research Forest Drive.
To promote a safe environment for all pathway users, the Township’s Parks and Recreation Department encourages the following:
– Show courtesy and respect to other pathway users at all times.
– Stay alert! Listen for audible warnings and allow faster pathway users to pass freely.
– Keep to the right side of the pathways to make it easier for users to pass on the left. When passing, let your presence be known with a bell, polite cough or friendly greeting.
– Yield to wheelchairs. Wheelchairs always have the right of way.
– Wear white or bright clothing to be more visible.
– Watch out for the pathway maintenance vehicles. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the pathways except for maintenance purposes.
– Be predictable. Stay straight. Watch for other pathway users.
– Go single file when using the pathways in groups.
– With pathways winding through the trees, bikers and skaters should control their speed, especially around pedestrians. Bikers and skaters should wear helmets and protective gear, and ensure that bike brakes are adjusted and work well.
– When walking your dog, be kind to the environment and other users. Please pick up after your dog. All dogs should be on a leash that is no more than 10 feet long.
– Be conscious of stop signs and cautionary stenciling at intersections.
– If you encounter an issue on the pathway or have a concern, please contact The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department at 281-210-3900.
Entergy, Texas Inc. Completes Efforts to Fix Streetlights
By Phallan K. Davis, Entergy Texas, Inc.There are 5,000 streetlights in The Woodlands that are serviced by Entergy Texas, and just over 300 were not working earlier this year. Entergy Texas’ commitment to getting the job done is so strong that additional crews from outside The Woodlands service territory were brought in to speed up the repair work.
Streetlights may not function for a variety of reasons, including a burnedout lamp; lamps close to their end-of-life cycle that turn on and off; or a bad sensor or underground faults. But when officials with The Woodlands Township expressed concern that several streetlights were not functioning, Entergy Texas quickly mobilized its workers to patrol the area and mark with a white or red ribbon the status of each light. Where repairs were needed above ground, white ribbons were used to mark the spot for those who came behind to do the work. That work was completed in April. For streetlights requiring underground repairs, sites were marked with red ribbons. The time that it will take to repair those will depend on the extent of the damage. It also typically takes a bit longer to identify the source and fix the problem when underground facilities are involved. The goal, however, is to have all streetlights restored by the end of summer.
“Entergy Texas, Inc. strives to provide customer service excellence. We want to ensure that the streetlights in The Woodlands are functioning properly and make repairs when they are not. We appreciated the opportunity to partner with The Woodlands Township officials to ensure work was completed swiftly,” said Allen East, director of regional customer service. Please visit www.entergy.com or call 1 (800) ENTERGY to report a streetlight that is out. Entergy Texas will send crews to quickly remedy the problem.

SOUND THE ALARM!
Report Suspicious Activity to Law Enforcement
By Susan MartinThe success of community-oriented policing in The Woodlands is enhanced by the active involvement of residents. When we join together and watch out for one another, we can contribute to a safer community. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch program encourages residents to act as the additional “eyes and ears” of law enforcement and report suspicious activity as it is happening.
What is suspicious?
It is important to remember: People are not suspicious, their behavior is. Suspicious activity is defined as when a person’s conduct or action is out of place and does not fit into the day-to-day activities of the neighborhood.
Some examples of suspicious activities:
• A stranger loitering in the neighborhood
• A stranger taking a shortcut through a back yard or jumping a fence
• Persons loitering around schools, parks or secluded areas
• Someone peering into parked vehicles or windows
• Someone loitering in front of a house, particularly if the owners are known to be absent
• One or more persons sitting in parked car
• An idling parked car, regardless of whether it is occupied
• A high volume of traffic going to and from a home
• Forcible entry of a home or the sound of glass breaking
• Vehicles moving slowly and without lights or circling your block numerous times
• Vehicles loaded with valuables
Know what to report and how to report it
If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately! To report suspicious activity or a crime that has already occurred, call 936-442-7797 for Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. In the village of Creekside Park, call Harris County Constable Precinct 4 at 281-376-3472.
A quick and accurate description of events, vehicles and persons can make all the difference in apprehending a potential criminal. Be ready to provide as many of the following facts as you have available:
• What happened?
• Where and when did it occur?
• Is anyone injured?
• Description of vehicle(s)
• License plate number(s)
• Time and direction of travel of suspect(s)
• Description of suspect(s), and clothing
Many times people notice something suspicious, but don’t make the call. Some might assume that someone else has called or it might be nothing. Others don’t want to get involved. Trust your instincts. If something seems wrong, make the call! Law enforcement will look into it.
The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch encourages neighbors to get to know one another and to watch out for each other. To see if your neighborhood has an active Neighborhood Watch coordinator, or for more tips on crime prevention, please call 281-210-3800 or email neighbor@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.
