The Dog Walker Watch program encourages dog walkers to serve as “extra eyes and ears” for law enforcement and to report suspicious activity. The premise of Dog Walker Watch is that dog walkers know their routes well and can easily note

NEWS

Alden Bridge

Thanks to all who helped us with volunteer needs for The Woodlands Marathon Cheer Challenge, the villages’ Flea Market, Woodlands GreenUp event and those who attended the Spring Festival. We appreciate your help and participation!

The deadline for submitting scholarship applications was March 27, 2015, so these will be judged very soon and we’ll announce the winners for 2015. We plan to honor these young people at the May residents meeting, so save the date and join us that night, May 12, 2015, at 7 p.m. at the Township building to congratulate them.

Our April board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard. Our guest speaker hasn’t been announced as of this date, so please check our website for this information. All residents are encouraged to attend. Bring us your questions and concerns or just stop by and introduce yourself. We have several openings for Area Representatives on our board. If you’ve ever thought about serving your village through one of our volunteer positions, please attend a board meeting and find out what we’re all about.

The Yard of the Month program is gearing up for the 2015 season, and April’s theme is April Flowers, and we’re seeking the front yard with the best display of colorful flowers in the village. Please send in your nominations no later than April 14, 2015, and the winner will be awarded on Sunday, April 19, 2015. Please nominate your friends and neighbors (or yourself!) with an email to info@aldenbridge.org.

Visit our website, www.aldenbridge. org, for continuously updated news of the village and send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org to be placed on the subscription list for our email newsletter.

Cochran’s Crossing

Elections for village boards of directors were held in February. However, there wasn’t an election for Cochran’s Crossing Village Association’s board. According to Township rules, an election isn’t necessary if the number of qualified candidates for a village board is equal or less than the total number of director positions. Cochran’s Crossing has a board with 18 director slots and 17 village residents stepped up to fill the positions.

In alphabetical order, board members for 2015 include: Gary Conwell, Brian Creighton, Mark Gjovik, Jim Goldmeyer, Jennifer Graff, Todd Graff, Jo Anne Johnson, J.C. (James) Harville, Cynthia Kessinger, Larry Perry, Steve Perry, Lori Riley, Warren Robinson, Stuart Schroeder, Susan Tinsley, Clarence “CW” Wallace, and Dabney Wisenbaker. This means there is an open position on the board. It can be filled by a Cochran’s Crossing resident through a board vote. If you are interested, check to see if the position is still open by the time this article is published. Board meetings are the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd.

Board meetings include a public safety report from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Some of the captures are highlighted and statistics are provided on active cases, recovered property, and felony arrests. Deputies Jason Hopper and Danny Dixon provide the updates. Also of interest is the vacation watch service the MCSO provides to residents who are going to be away from home. In December, more than 1,700 homes were included in the watch.

It was also announced that Jason Hopper has been certified as a crime prevention specialist. He is one of only two law enforcement officers with the certification in Montgomery County.

Another goal of the association is to support education in our area. Recently,

nearly $3,000 was provided to elementary school teachers in Cochran’s Crossing to support worthwhile projects that did not have funding from the Conroe School District. This effort has continued for more than 20 years.

The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board is the largest of any of the associations. The members are concerned overall with The Woodlands and in particular with the Cochran’s Crossing area. If you have a matter you would like to bring to their attention, come to a board meeting. The agenda of each meeting has time for resident comments. This should be a good time to make a visit to the board since it will be the annual meeting and it will feature a speaker of interest.

College Park

Hello to every one of our residents in The Woodlands! Spring is upon us and all of our lawns and landscape are looking fantastic and green. There are so many wonderful events that happen during the months of April and May. Our students will be finishing their semesters at school, ready for vacation, and the parents are eager to start their summer vacations.

Please follow our College Park website and newsletter for upcoming events in our village and what is going on around the community. Our annual Spring Fling event will be on May 30, 2015, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Harper’s Landing Park. Bring your swimsuits for

18 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE APRIL 2015

the beautiful pool which will be open. It is always a wonderful turnout and the residents of College Park always have a great time. Food and drinks will be provided along with activities to entertain.

If any of our residents would like to volunteer at our Spring Fling, please attend our May meeting on May 18, 2015, at 7 p.m. at The Township building. We are in need of volunteers for our larger events and we would appreciate any new faces.

We hope you all have super fun vacations and enjoy your family and friends. Everyone is out doing things, so please be patient with people crossing our streets, or drivers taking a little bit longer to find their way on our busy streets. With so much of the construction to better our roadways, we have all been challenged with our patience. Just leave a little earlier than usual for your destination and enjoy our community!

In closing, have a great rest of your springtime and Easter season. Get your lawn projects completed before the summer heat, and be safe and watch out for each other.

Grogan’s Mill

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association is excited to have had several people file for a director’s position on the board. Congratulations to both our newly-elected and re-elected board members. Incumbents Sara Bissig, Tom Chumbley, Bruce Cunningham, John Hennigan and Jody Ronzio were re-elected along with Tom Howard, Michael Tabbert and John Yoars elected for their first two-year term. Go to our website at www.grogansmillvillage.com for more information about your GMVA board members.

The directors met in early March at a planning session to prioritize the programs and projects and set the budget for the

2015/2016 fiscal year which begins on April 1, 2015. Again, visit our website for details on the village association’s plans for this coming year.

MEETING INFORMATION

With spring in the air, the Grogan’s Mill Farmers’ Market is looking forward to another banner year as we continue to add vendors who offer a wide variety of locally grown vegetables, meats, honey, olive oils, soaps, specialty foods, breads, and many other tantalizing goodies. If you don’t receive our weekly Farmers’ Market e-blast, sign up on our website or our Facebook page at www.facebook. com/GrogansMillVillageAssociation. The market has branched out recently with the addition of a few expert craftsmen and artists joining the market to sell their beautiful, unique, and useful wares.

There is still time to sign up for the Water-Wise Village Challenge being sponsored by The Woodlands Township Environmental Services department. The challenge is a way of reminding residents that water is the second most important thing in our lives and that we are using groundwater faster than it can be replaced. By not watering lawns during the long winter months when the grass remains dormant, we can conserve water to be available when needed later

EVENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

APRIL LAWN CARE

Emerald colors are emerging in The Woodlands and thoughts are turning to soft, cool, green lawns. For decades, homeowners have looked at conventional ways to keep lawns healthy and lush. April sees scores of bags of pre-emergent herbicides, fertilizers, soil amendments, and a variety of other products strewn on turf.

Many who want lovely lawns are looking at simpler and less costly methods to keep that turf growing. Here are some helpful tips for keeping grass healthy:

Irrigating Turf

St. Augustine and Bermuda grass need an inch or less of water per week to thrive. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the grass needs to be watered every week. The average April rainfall for The Woodlands is 3.52 inches. Assuming the grass needs 4 inches of water per month, the grass only requires .48 of an inch from the irrigation system for the entire month. Since the grass is just coming out of dormancy, it probably doesn’t even need that extra half inch.

Healthy soil makes for healthy lawns

Soil beneath the grass should be full of living organisms: bacteria, beneficial fungi, nematodes, protozoa, earthworms and insects that aerate and convert nutrients for plants. Spreading ½ - ¾ inch of organic compost throughout the lawn in mid-April (and mid-October) encourages the proliferation of these organisms, increases the water-holding capacity of the soil, and helps create strong root systems.

Aeration

Aerating the lawn before adding compost helps get the organic materials down into the soil. Hand-held aerators, pitchforks, larger, gasoline-powered machines or aeration services are all available.

Fertilizing

Add a balanced, preferably organic fertilizer. Be careful to use no more than the recommended amount. Spread it evenly according to directions. Many residents do not use fertilizers and depend on compost alone.

Dethatching

Well-cared-for St. Augustine grass never needs dethatching. In fact, dethatching can severely damage it.

Mowing

Grass, just like every other plant, needs its leaves to photosynthesize food. This helps grass roots grow deep and strong, and more resistant to disease and pests. Cutting grass too short inhibits the plant from making food, shortens the root system, and may affect the life of the lawn.

Raising the mower to the highest possible height keeps more of each blade on the plant. Dull mower blades shred the tops of the grass leaf, making it difficult for it to thrive and opens the plant to possible infections. A sharpened mower blade clips the grass cleanly, and allows it to heal much more quickly.

Indian Springs

2015 Elections

Following elections this spring, two former Area Representatives are now officers. The board would like to announce Mike Arendes as President and Bev Wallery as Secretary. Also bringing new talent and energy to the board will be Area Representative Maria Bergh. We know these three individuals will work hard and represent our community well.

The board would like to thank outgoing President Amy Lecocq for her many years of dedicated service. Her efforts have definitely improved and enhanced our Indian Springs community, and her leadership will be missed. We are fortunate to have outgoing Secretary Erika Bondy Pratt stay on as a member of the board. We also thank her for her years of service in her officer capacity and look forward to serving with her this term. And finally, we would like to recognize retiring board member Charlie Keene for his service to the community.

School Donations

The Indian Springs Village Association is pleased to once again support our local schools. Funds raised

at village events, such as the Taste of the Village, are put back into our community through scholarships to our Indian Springs high school seniors and donations to our neighborhood schools. A $750 donation was made to Galatas Elementary School for the purchase of fiction and non-fiction books for their kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms. Galatas Principal Denae Wilker writes, “These valuable instructional materials will enhance student learning and encourage a love of reading that will last a lifetime.” An additional $750 donation was made to Glen Loch Elementary. Indian Springs Village Association board member Michael Saucier presented the check to the Glen Loch PTO in February.

After understanding the need for funding to support STEM learning in Robotics, the Indian Springs Village Association was proud to contribute $500 to both the Mitchell Intermediate and

Wilkerson Intermediate Robotics programs. Mitchell science teacher and robotics coach Lori LeBouef writes, “We would like to expand our competition teams, but more importantly, provide robots for each science classroom to allow all Mitchell students the opportunity to develop STEM skills.” Wilkerson science teacher and robotics coach Wendy Park plans to purchase a Lego Mindstorms kit, saying that, “it will benefit the students in the area of science, technology, and engineering. We are working to find ways to showcase and share the materials now and in the future!” We appreciate all the wonderful teachers and staff who work so hard for our students.

Rocks Earth Day Concert in the Park

Celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Global Earth Day, Concert in the Park brings a green message to the stage with the national headlining band, Vocal Trash, at this free family event on Sunday, April 19, 2015, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northshore Park. The community is invited to pack a picnic, enjoy the free concert and enjoy activities at the Ecology Carnival.

Featuring the electrifying energy and golden voice of Kelsey Rae, Vocal Trash delivers a unique blend of rock, oldies, swing and pop. Combining music, choreography and comedy with recycled instruments, the ecoentertainers perform a variety show of tight a cappella harmonies, industrial “Stomp” style drumming and awardwinning break dancing. Horns and

acoustical instruments blend with trash can percussion, gas can guitar and a milk urn bass. The driving beat comes with an earth-friendly message.

Concert in the Park is a free offering of The Woodlands Township, and the Earth Day performance of Vocal Trash is sponsored by Waste Management.

Get Water-Wise

Residents still have time to pledge to turn their sprinkler systems off or not water the grass until April 15, 2015, to help conserve the local water supply. Every pledge counts! Each pledge earns a contest point for the residents’ village. Pledging is easy — simply visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/waterpledge or submit your pledge in person at the Environmental Services Department of The Woodlands Township, 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, or to your village association.

Stay tuned for the winning villages! The results of the Water-Wise Village Competition will be announced at WaterFest on May 9, 2015, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Northshore Park. This free, fun family event promotes water conservation through engaging performances, hands-on activities and educational booths. You don’t want to miss it!

Looking for more ways to conserve water or to stay informed about the state of the water at the local and state level? Register now for the free Montgomery County Water Supply and Conservation Symposium to be held on April 18, 2015, from 9 a.m. to noon at The Woodlands Township Town Hall at 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard.
