There’s no need to travel far for a fun-filled Spring Break! Lake Woodlands offers a source of adventure for all ages. Bring the kids, bring your friends or spend some alone time with nature by visiting one of two boat rental locations in The Woodlands.
Hourly rentals are available for single and double kayaks, stand-up paddleboards to head out to the lake, or take a more relaxing pedal trip on a swan boat down The Woodlands Waterway. To help prepare for your visit, below are the top five most frequently asked boat house questions.
Do I need a reservation?
No reservation is needed! During Spring Break, all rentals will be first come, first served. To avoid the line, it is advised to arrive at the boat houses upon opening at 9 a.m.
What are your hours?
The boat houses will be open every day of the week during CISD Spring Break, March 6-15, 2020, from 9 a.m. to sunset. Daylight Saving Time begins on March 8, 2020, so we’ll be open an extra hour beginning that day! Last boats go out one hour before sunset.
What are the age requirements?
To take a boat out by yourself, you must be 16 years or older with a waiver signed by a parent or guardian if under 18. This waiver can be signed online and the parent does not have to be present. Younger minors (aged 10 to 15) can ride in their own boat if an adult (18 or older) is taking a boat out with them. There is no minimum age for a child if in the boat with an adult. Small children (under 42 inches tall) may ride in a parent or guardian’s lap.

What do I need to do before my visit?
Save time in line by completing an online waiver at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/1384/Boat-House-Waivers. Every person 18 years or older must complete their own waiver. Minors under 18 years old can be added to an adult’s waiver.
What do I wear and what should I bring?
If you plan on kayaking or paddleboarding, dress prepared to get wet. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. We recommend leaving large bags and valuables at home. A limited number of cubbies are available at Riva Row.
A full list of frequently asked questions can be found on The Woodlands Township website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/FAQ.

The Woodlands Fire Department recently placed a 2020 Pierce Velocity Fire Engine in service at Station 7 in Creekside Park. The new engine has a 1,500 gallon-per-minute pump, a 500-gallon water tank, more than 2,000 feet of fire hose and a complement of ground ladders and tools, including the Jaws of Life. Fire department personnel honored a longstanding firefighting tradition, dating back to horse-drawn fire apparatus, and “pushed in” the new apparatus into Station 7, officially beginning the apparatus’ service to the community. The crews were joined by Creekside Park Village Association President Nancy Becker and community resident Pamela Stout.
Below, the Board of Directors recognized The Woodlands Christian Academy Cross Country Teams for excelling in athletics and winning the 2019 TAPPS 4A State Championship. To celebrate this accomplishment, the Board of Directors proclaimed January 15, 2020, as The Woodlands Christian Academy Cross Country Team State Champions Day in The Woodlands, Texas.

• Mow and edge your lawn.
• Edge, weed and mulch all landscape beds.
• Store trash and recycle carts out of sight from any adjacent public or private property.

Is the appearance of your home blemished by algae and mildew?
Suggestions for removing algae and mildew from your home:
• A solution of 10 parts water to one part common bleach (strength of mixture can be increased for removal of heavy growth). Be sure to wet foundation plantings first and rinse everything in clean water when done to protect plants from the bleach. Wear gloves and be careful not to come in contact with bleach. Please be aware that high concentrations of bleach may discolor your paint. It is advised to spot test a small area when using bleach.
• Wipe or scrub with detergent and water.
• There are a number of cleaning products and suggestions for removing these substances from the exterior of the home that can be found and sold at your local home improvement store.
Prevention is always best! Periodic cleaning with a power washer containing WATER ONLY may help prevent the problem altogether. Remember: Mildew removal may reveal the need to repaint your home. If so, be sure to take the appropriate actions.
Consider the Facts
Trash and recycle carts left out where others can see them:
• Detract from the appearance of the neighborhood.
• Decrease the resale value of homes on the street.
• Impose on the next-door neighbors.
Expect the Best for Your Neighborhood!
All trash, refuse or recycling containers may be placed near the street edge no earlier than one day prior to waste collection. Emptied containers must be removed from the street, front yard or driveway by the end of the collection day. Containers must be stored on the owner’s property at all times. All trash and refuse containers must be stored out of public view at ground level from the street or alley or adjacent and surrounding properties at all times except during waste collection.

Note: The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department can provide information on lawn care, irrigation practices, disease prevention and plant selection tailored to this region. Please call 281-210-3800 for more information.
Spring is a great time to edge, weed and add fresh mulch to make a yard that’s the envy of the neighborhood.

“The beginning of hurricane season is a good reminder of the importance of emergency preparation. No two storms are alike, which makes it difficult to forecast what the exact damage to our electric system could be and how long outages could last. However, preparation is key,” said Pierce Prater, service area manager for CenterPoint Energy. “Just as CenterPoint Energy has an Emergency Operations Plan should a hurricane strike, we urge customers to have their own emergency plan as well and be prepared to be without power for two weeks or possibly longer, depending

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS
Alden Bridge
Congratulations to all the winners of last month’s village association elections! We’ll introduce our 2020-2021 board members at our monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd.
The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2020 Alden Bridge scholarships is March 27, 2020, at midnight. Applications can be obtained from school counselors or our website, www.aldenbridge.org/scholarships. All Alden Bridge resident students pursuing higher education in 2020 are eligible to apply. The awarded amount of $1,000 will be paid to your school for schoolrelated expenses. Questions? Reach out to us at abvascholarships@gmail.com.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at the annual Alden Bridge Spring Festival scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2020, at Lakeside Park! This event includes music, inflatables, greetings from local vendors, oodles of fun, and of course, the always popular egg hunt! Please check the Alden Bridge Village Association Facebook page or our website for times and updated event details. All are welcome and we hope to see you there!
We’re actively seeking sponsorships from local businesses who want our residents informed of their offerings. Revenue from sponsorships goes into our scholarship fund. Please consider being a sponsor, and contact abvainfo@gmail.com for more information.
If you would like to receive our communications, send your email address to abvainfo@gmail.com and we’ll add you to the monthly newsletter list. You can also visit our Facebook page and website, www.aldenbridge.org, for the latest news from our village.

Cochran’s Crossing
We will welcome new members to our board at the March meeting. The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month (with no meeting in December), unless otherwise announced.
The past year has been a good one for the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association. The 16 board members worked in various areas to better our community. Some highlights were a pool party held at Bear Branch Pool, our annual Fall Festival held at Shadowbend Park, our Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest and our first ice skating event where tickets were given to children of Cochran’s Crossing. We also awarded many teacher grants and awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors who reside in Cochran’s Crossing.
Our association raises money to support our teacher grants and senior scholarships. Money is raised through digital sponsorships and members volunteering at different events. The Flea Market and 3R Bazaar events are two examples of these events that help our association raise money.
We would love for you to be a part of our group that helps our community. Please come to our monthly meetings to find out more.

College Park
Looking for a family activity this spring? Sign up to participate in the 10th annual Earth Day GreenUp event on Saturday, March 21, 2020. Join other volunteers as you clean up litter in designated areas throughout The Woodlands. Our goal in College Park is to have 70 participants. Will your family or business help us reach our goal this year? Sign up on the Environmental Services section of the Township website
at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ greenup.
Looking further ahead, we hope to see you again this year at the Poolooza pool party in Harper’s Landing Park. The party is in May and details will follow next month. This is one of two major events provided each year by your College Park board of directors. If you have joined us in the past, you know that there is plenty of fun and food for everyone!
It’s a long way off but no better time than now to start thinking about America Recycles Day. Save your used batteries. We will be collecting them at the 3R Bazaar in November. Remember that there are monetary rewards for the villages that collect the most. This money funds the scholarships we award each year to college-bound seniors who demonstrate participation in community service.
Don’t forget the Water-Wise Village Challenge. It ends April 15, 2020, but you can still sign the pledge and earn points for College Park. We have won this village challenge two years in a row. Let’s keep us on top as the water-wise village. This initiative saves you money because your sewer rate for the year is calculated during the winter months when your sprinkler system should be off. Each year you must sign a new pledge for the current year. Don’t have a sprinkler system? You can still sign the pledge to conserve winter water usage when grass is dormant. It is easy to do and supports your village association. Go online now to thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/environment.
We could use your help in other ways. We have vacant positions on our College Park board. Get connected to the community and your neighbors. Get insight on what is happening in The Woodlands. Be part of what makes College Park a great place to live. The time commitment is

Indian Springs
Calling all college-bound 2020 graduating seniors who are Indian Springs residents. The most exciting time of the year for the Indian Springs Village Association is when we award $1,000 scholarships to deserving graduating seniors. One of the main purposes of the village association is to raise funds to honor those students who have demonstrated an immense dedication to community service and citizenship.
This year’s scholarship applications are currently available on our website and are due on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Award winners and their parents will be notified and invited to a special reception held during the Indian Springs board meeting at The Woodlands Township in April. Scholarship information and applications can be downloaded at www.indianspringsvillage.com/ programs/scholarships.
Indian Springs has funded $31,000 in scholarships over the last six years. Funds are raised primarily through the community events we promote such as The Taste of the Village held in October. The 2019 scholarship winners are Abby Inbusch from John Cooper, Bernadette Pavlich from The Woodlands High, Alex Alley from The Woodlands High, and Matthew Kaiser from College Park High.

MARCH 2020 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE 23
Living in a heavily forested area and a temperate year-round climate provides a diverse habitat for a variety of wildlife to thrive. Whether you see these common creatures or not, they have managed to adapt to our neighborhoods, preserves, greenbelts and waterways. Often overlooked or misunderstood, these critters don’t always get the credit they deserve for the roles they play in our environment. Check in regularly as we introduce you to the dynamic world of wildlife right here in The Woodlands.
What do they look like?
Bees and wasps are often mistaken for one another but can be distinguished by the following characteristics:
• Bees tend to be thick-bodied and hairy. Bees have barbed stingers, which are left in the victim. After using its stinger a bee soon dies, so stinging is a last resort at self-defense.
• Wasps have a thinner, smoother body with a pinched waist and more distinct coloration. Wasps have un-barbed stingers that can be used again and again.
What do they eat?
• Bees mostly eat and drink the pollen and nectar from flowers. Some eat over-ripe
fruit or the sweet secretions of other insects, notably aphids.
• Depending on the species, wasps will feed on nectar, other insects and spiders, fallen fruit and carrion.
Why do we need them?
• Bees are a critical component of a healthy ecosystem. Bees produce honey and beeswax, but their most important role is pollination, essential for most plants to propagate and grow fruit. Bees are responsible for nearly one out of three bites of food we eat.
• Wasps are extremely beneficial to humans and the environment. They are extremely adept at controlling pest

populations. Nearly every pest insect on Earth is preyed upon by a wasp species, either for food or as a host for its parasitic larvae.
From preventing and treating stings to how to safely remove an unwanted nest, head over to the Township Environmental Services Blog and check out the latest wildlife articles. Resources on beekeeping and how you can help our pollinator population are available as well as resources for safe encounters with wildlife.

Thank you to the volunteers who are committed to keeping The Woodlands clean and green. Removing litter from our greenbelts prevents pollution in our waterways, protects wildlife and keeps our community healthy and beautiful. In the months of September through December, 2019, 44 groups contributed 368 volunteer hours to help keep our pathways free of litter. In total, 2,571 gallons of trash, approximately 1,558 pounds, were collected from our green spaces. This is equivalent to 27 of our 96-gallon trash carts!
If you would like to adopt a pathway, please contact The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800 or enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

BLUE-EYED GRASS
Birds, bees and butterflies are big fans of this blue beauty. A true Texas native, blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium spp.) is not actually a grass but a member of the iris family. At least seven different species of blue-eyed grass are native to the state including Narrowleaf, Dotted, Roadside and Southern. You’ll find them in damp, open wooded areas, along the banks of streams and occasionally in open grassy areas and meadows
In our region, blue-eyed grass blooms in the spring, usually beginning in March. The luminous blue flowers of this perennial appear on spikes, rising 6 to 12 inches above the leaves. These conspicuous star-shaped flowers have six pointed petals and a bright yellow center. Each evening, the flowers close and reopen in the morning. On cloudy, overcast days, the flowers may open only slightly or not at all. Due to our warm climate, the dark green foliage of this perennial often persists through the winter.
Gardeners love this fast-growing, easy-to-grow plant. Start it in the spring or fall from seed or from a segment of the rhizomes. Rhizomes are modified stems that run horizontally underground, sending out roots and new stems up to the surface. While it tolerates most soils, blue-eyed grass grows best in poor, moist, well-drained soils that have not been fertilized. Rich soil will cause lanky, tall growth reducing the natural beauty of the plant. Although it will grow in part shade, full sun produces the best flowers. Once established in the garden, blue-eyed grass will propagate itself through rhizomes and the seed. Dividing the plant every other year increases its vigor and the divided rhizomes can be shared with gardening friends and family.
For those looking to bring pollinators to their yard, blue-eyed grass is a magnet for halictine bees, bumblebees and other native bees and pollinating flies (blue flowers, in general, attract pollinators). Butterflies use blue-eyed grass as a nectar
By Ann Hall
source. Pollinated flowers produce small brown, wrinkled seeds which are favored by a variety of birds.
This easy-care plant does come with a few gardening precautions. If allowed to dry out, it will decline, so maintaining soil moisture is important. Blue-eyed grass is also susceptible to crown rot which can be caused by heavy mulching. Make certain to mulch lightly around established plants.
Blue-eyed grass is often applied to cottage-style gardens, rock gardens and wooded areas. Because it is low growing, it is also useful at the front of a border or as pathway edging. Consider combining it with other natives such as orange milkweed (asclepias tuberosa) or blazing star (liatris). In container plantings, blueeyed grass adds interesting texture to plant combinations.
Dormant rhizomes and seeds of blueeyed grass are available from online plant retailers, local plant retailers specializing in native plants, or perhaps from a generous friend or neighbor.

Understanding Municipal Utility Districts
By Bob Dailey
Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs), including the 10 MUDs in The Woodlands served by Woodlands Water, represent one of the essential local forms of government across Texas. They provide clean, safe drinking water, wastewater collection and treatment, and storm drainage for citizens, especially in areas that cannot be served by neighboring municipalities.
How Are MUDs Created?
A Municipal Utility District (MUD) is created either by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or by the Texas Legislature. The operation of a MUD is heavily regulated. MUDs are subject to the same legal requirements as other local forms of government. Over the last 50 years, MUDs have been utilized to help develop growth in The Woodlands and the Greater Houston area.
MUDs Help Keep Housing Costs Low
Homes are, on average, less expensive in Texas because of Municipal
Utility Districts. Under Texas law, MUDs are political subdivisions of the state and authorized by the TCEQ. Bonds fund a MUD, allowing homeowners to pay off the obligations over a long period, instead of having to pay for the infrastructure upfront in the home purchase price.
How It Works
A developer makes a petition to the TCEQ to create a MUD. The developer must fund 100 percent of the water, sewer, drainage, road and recreational facilities for a new project. If the project is successful and creates sufficient new taxable value, the TCEQ has adopted rules that authorize a MUD to reimburse
the developer for all or a portion of the facility costs.
MUDs Create Community Infrastructure
MUDs played an integral role in constructing and financing the quality infrastructure needed in our communities today – like water, wastewater and drainage. Tax-exempt municipal bonds fund the construction of MUD facilities. Homeowners and landowners pay taxes to retire the bonds. Homeowners and users pay monthly water and sewer fees for the cost of operating and maintaining the system.
