Founder of The Woodlands, George Mitchell, center, receives a proclamation from The Woodlands Township declaring April 29, 2010, as Cynthia Woods Mitchell Day. The Woodlands Township Chairman of the Board Nelda Luce Blair, left, presented Mr. Mitchell with the proclamation, along with Township President and General Manager Don Norrell at The Woodlands Township meeting on January 27, 2010.
Earlier this year, The Woodlands Township was honored to present George Mitchell, visionary founder of The Woodlands, with a proclamation recognizing the contributions of his wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell. The proclamation declared Thursday, April 29, 2010, as Cynthia Woods Mitchell Day
On that day, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion will host a tribute concert with the Houston Symphony featuring some of Mrs. Mitchell’s favorite music.
Mrs. Mitchell passed away after a lengthy illness in late December, but will long be remembered in The Woodlands for her many contributions. In addition to being married to Mr. Mitchell for more than 60 years and being the mother of their 10 children, Mrs. Mitchell was instrumental in giving The Woodlands its descriptive name and was a patron of the arts.
She envisioned The Woodlands as being a place where everyone, not just the elite, could enjoy symphonies, operas and ballets, and her dream came to life in The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, celebrating its 21st season this year.
The Woodlands Township salutes the Mitchells and their enduring vision of The Woodlands. It is a privilege to take that vision into the future.

With music, da N ce, comedy a N d circus arts, the eco-performers B ri N g a full day of co N tagious e N ergy to the festival stage.
The Woodlands Earth Day Festival has signed national headliners, Vocal Trash and EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville to entertain the crowds on Saturday, April 10, at The Woodlands High School.
Delivering a unique mix of oldies, rock and contemporary beats, Vocal Trash combines rich harmonies with the grit of street instruments and hip-hop moves. A gas can guitar, milk urn bass and trash can percussion blend with horns and acoustic instruments. The driving beat comes with an earth-friendly message.
Home-grown Texas talent, Vocal Trash is wowing crowds from coast to coast in appearances at festivals and venues like Six Flags and Madison Square Garden. Kelsey Rae, the female vocalist, explains, “We play to all ages. Good music appeals to everyone, and the kids love the drumming theatrics. It’s a lot of fun.”
Between sets, EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville takes the stage with the Planetary Circus. Environmental vaudeville, the show captivates with skilled
acrobatics, juggling and music punctuated with humor, improvisation and audience participation.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville enthralls family audiences across the country with their fast-paced routine, combining water conservation and waste reduction with comedy. The circus act hits the audience in the funny bone while showcasing practical solutions to real environmental problems.
Guaranteeing eco-exploration and entertainment for everyone, The Woodlands Earth Day Festival returns to The Woodlands High School, 6101 Research Forest Drive, on Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event is organized by The Woodlands Township, The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. and Conroe Independent School District with sponsorship provided by Waste Management, The Woodlands Development Company, Woodlands Joint Powers Agency, H-E-B and others. More than a trend, Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) is a cultural movement! From practical to fashion forward, reusable bags are becoming the choice of eco-conscious shoppers at the grocery store, mall, pharmacy and big box stores.
Last year, more than 675 residents entered the Feed the Dragon Village Challenge, pledging to pass up single-use plastic and to carry reusable bags instead. Sustainability was a top motive for choosing to BYOB. Saving oil resources and protecting wildlife from the harmful effects of plastic bag litter were also cited. Recognizing the economics of reusable bags, savvy retailers offer incentives for bringing your own.
According to environmental services
manager at The Woodlands Township, Lynne Aldrich, “The community embraced the campaign in such a big way. We are extending it this year.” Beginning March 1 and ending on April 15, residents will earn points for their village and get entered in a prize drawing for pledging to carry reusable shopping bags.
Held in conjunction with The Woodlands Earth Day Festival, the Village Challenge is a friendly competition among villages that rewards the community for taking positive steps for the environment. If you already bring your own bags, we want to know! If not, pledge to do so. Visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/earthday or call 281-210-3900 for more information.

The Woodlands has become a popular place for a variety of tourism activities with over five million square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment. With 10 hotel properties containing 1,500 hotel rooms now located within The Woodlands Township boundaries, visitors come for business meetings, conventions, corporate events, sporting events, festivals, reunions, weddings and more.
To attract visitor spending, The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau is implementing a destination sales initiative in 2010 that will coordinate with hotel properties and other organizations in bringing group business to The Woodlands including tours, sporting events, weddings, reunions, trade shows, convention groups, and other groups bringing visitors to The Woodlands. All of this translates into vibrant economic development for businesses in The Woodlands, according to
The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau President Nick Wolda.
“There are millions of dollars of investment in local retail business in The Woodlands,” Mr. Wolda said. “This provides a great opportunity for shopping, dining and entertainment for The Woodlands residents, but also needs to be supported by visitors to sustain economic vitality.”
The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau conducts market research on who is coming to The Woodlands through its Visitors Services program in conjunction with the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce. In 2009, more than 85,000 visitors stopped by two Visitors Services locations at Market Street and The Woodlands Mall, respectively. Interestingly, all 50 states and 79 countries were represented. In all, 665 different zip codes were logged through this program. Clearly, The Woodlands has become
a destination point for many different activities. With the Group Sales Initiative, The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau will work with meeting planners and other organizations to promote The Woodlands as a great place for meetings, conventions, reunions, weddings, and much more. Through the group sales initiative, The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau will strengthen The Woodlands’ image and visibility as a premier destination for meetings, sporting events, reunions, weddings, conventions and more.
If you are interested in planning your next event in The Woodlands, e-mail info@thewoodlandscvb.com or call 281-363-2447.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival
has earned a spot on the “Top 100 for 2010” festival listing by Art Fair Source Book, the definitive guide to the best juried art and craft fairs in the United States
The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival ranked number 68 out of 564 festivals nationwide in the Fine Art and Fine Craft category based on net average sales per artist.
To be held the weekend of April 10 through 11, 2010 in The Woodlands Town Center along the banks of The Woodlands Waterway, this year’s festival will feature approximately 200 fine arts and crafts artists selected to exhibit in this juried show. Over 674 artists applied this year.
“We are extremely proud to be named among the Top 100 list of festivals in the nation,” said Brenda Gottlieb, festival executive director for The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. “In just five years, we’ve achieved a great reputation within the short amount of time we’ve been in business. That success is attributed
to the great setting that the Waterway offers, as well as the contributions from our generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers. We look forward to another record turnout in April and encourage the community and visitors alike to come out and discover great art.”
The festival will feature national and regional artists in 14 mediums selling their original creations, including clay, drawing, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media 2D and 3D, painting, pastel, photography, sculpture, textile, watercolor, and wood.
Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Two-day tickets are $15. March 2010 The Woodlands 7
alden Bridge
Congratulations to the winners of The Woodlands Township Residential Design Review Committee and Village Association elections! We appreciate your participation in the election process! March is the start of our new year, and our annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m., at the Township Service Center, 2201 Lake Woodlands Drive. All residents are invited to join us as we thank outgoing Village Association members, welcome new members, and recap the year.
We have lots of events on the horizon. Our biggest village event, the annual Spring Festival and Easter Egg Hunt, will be held on Saturday, April 3. The Yard of the Month contest begins again soon with the first 2010 winner to be chosen in late April. We’ll participate in the village associations’ outing to Minute Maid Park again this year. Congratulations to the newly elected village representatives! Please come to the annual meeting on March 15 to meet your new officers. We will also honor the service of Ted Stanley, who has worked very hard to represent the village of College Park as our The Woodlands Association Director for the past six
years. I would encourage any resident or neighbor to attend and help us honor a man who has helped the village through difficulties in the past and has led us into the new future of The Woodlands.
In addition, a special guest speaker from The Woodlands Township will be there to address the board. It will be very interesting, and refreshments will be served.
A reminder that scholarship applications are due Monday, March 15, and are available from the College Park High School guidance office or from any village association member. The College Park Village Association is proud to offer two $1,000 scholarships to students graduating from high school who reside in the village. Applications will be accepted at the meeting or via mail prior to the deadline date. Our regularly scheduled meeting will be Monday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Emergency Training Center. We welcome residents and will be ready to address their questions and concerns.

The Village of Creekside Park’s First Annual Chili Cook-off and Winter Festival was a tremendous success! Many thanks to all of the sponsors, participants, volunteers and attendees that took part in the event. Eight teams arrived in the early morning at Rob Fleming Park to slice and dice ingredients and get their large pots of chili simmering. Everyone enjoyed socializing while also watching NFL game action on the high-tech satellite TV trailer provided by Home Media Professionals. Things got really interesting when Ice Express arrived and blew 30,000 pounds of snow to create a giant snow and sledding

hill. Festivities officially kicked off at 1 p.m., and despite the cloudy weather, more than 700 residents enjoyed tasting chili samples, building snowmen, face painting, and of course endless trips up and down the sledding hill for the kids. Joel Deretchin, Claude Hunter, Gary Gelfman and Ashley Parker from Jasper’s were the honored guest judges. After careful deliberation, Ragin’ Cajun led by Roxanne Gautreau was declared the winner. The people’s choice vote also went to Ragin’ Cajun, confirming their chili excellence!
Congratulations to the winners of the 2009 Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest. Jerry and Denise Torok won the Best Home award and attracted many visitors eager to view the “floating star” shining high in the dark night sky behind their home. Tunica Pass - Lasting Spring Circle won the Best Neighborhood award with their festive and unique train concept featuring custom-painted train cars on the front lawns of more than 30 homes.

The intense blue and lavender blooms of stokes aster can help ease the winter blues or brighten up a spring garden.
Bloomer: The ST oke S aST er
Stokes aster, also called stokesia or cornflower aster, is a spring and early summer bloomer providing colorful, relatively large daisy-like flowers. The blooms can reach five inches across.
Stokes aster, used as an accent plant, provides flowers ranging from blue and butter yellow to white, depending on the variety. Planted with coreopsis, milkweed, verbena and Copper Canyon daisy, the plant adds color, shape and variety to the garden.
Used as a border plant, the long, lance-shaped leaves and mounding tendency offer strength and structure. Even though the plant is drought-tolerant, it also grows well among plants like pickerel weed along the edges of ponds and rain gardens.

in slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soils. Stokes aster thrives in either sun or light shade.
Flowers from Stokes aster are long-lasting, both on the plant and as cut flowers. Deadheading before the flower goes to seed encourages more blooms throughout the summer.
Stokes aster propagates with cuttings taken from the plant’s wire-like roots, from seed and from division. Plant now for an abundance of large and colorful flowers. Local native plant nurseries carry Stokes aster. Attendees of this year’s Earth Day in The Woodlands (Saturday, April 10, The Woodlands High School) can also purchase the plant there. More information about Stokes aster is available in the Plant Focus Brochure, Spring Blooming Perennials, from The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3900.

Named a “New Eco Role Model” by O Magazine, Carole Allen presents Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle: Conservation of a Rare Texas Treasure on Thursday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m., at McCullough Jr. High School.

hearts and imaginations of children and a nation. The conservationist is now the Gulf Office Director of Sea Turtle Restoration Project, an international organization dedicated to preserving all seven species of threatened and endangered turtles.
Kemp’s Ridley turtles are the smallest of the ocean dwelling species. About every two years, only the females come ashore to nest and lay eggs, producing 50 to 130 eggs per clutch. After hatching, males spend their entire lives at sea.
Mrs. Allen chronicles the perilous journey of the rare Texas treasure and how conservation efforts on the Gulf Coast are increasing their numbers. In 2009, from Bolivar Peninsula to Boca Chica Beach, 197 Kemp’s Ridley nests were documented, giving hope for the endangered animal.
Spend an inspiring evening with a true Texas heroine at the next Walk in the Woods Nature Lecture on Thursday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the L.G.I. Lecture Hall at McCullough Jr. High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive. This free program of The Woodlands Township is sponsored by The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., Waste Management, Hilton Courtyard Inn and The Pineywoods Nursery.

The Woodlands Fire Department was excited to launch The Woodlands CERT program last year, with the assistance of Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management.
The Woodlands Fire Department Chief Alan B. Benson was thrilled to have the resources to offer this very important program to the ever-increasing number of residents in The Woodlands. More than 100 residents have already completed The Woodlands CERT training, and many more are on the waiting list!
The Woodlands program is part of an effort that began in California in 1987 and has spread nationwide under a program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security through FEMA. The premise behind CERT is that during a major disaster, local services can easily
be overwhelmed. When minutes count, local first responders such as fire, police and medical services may take additional time in order to reach every workplace or neighborhood. Factors such as number of victims, communication failures, and road blockages may prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. As a result, people will have to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life-saving and life-sustaining needs.
According to John Raybon, neighborhood services manager with The Woodlands Township, efforts are also underway with The Woodlands Township to promote CERT training through The Woodlands Watch program given the synergism between the two community
organizations. Besides the training, The Woodlands CERT participates in various neighborhood and village events throughout the year.
Due to overwhelming community interest in the free training, more CERT classes are scheduled for 2010, along with various continuing education seminars for graduates of the program.

Additionally, a CERT Council has been established to oversee efforts within the eight villages while a Woodlands CERT facilitator manages the program and training. Plans call for the creation of CERT teams in each village initially and then ultimately in each neighborhood.

The Woodlands residents who are interested in registering for CERT may contact their Village CERT Representative (listed above) or contact Rachel Mitchell at The Woodlands Fire Department, 281-210-5833. Other Montgomery County residents interested in CERT training should contact the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management at 936-523-3903.
Nationwide, there are several million CERT teams including about 50,000 in Texas, the largest number of any state. The Woodlands is excited to join in on their efforts! Further information about CERT can be found at http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert.

Dealing with Solicitors
By Anne Spaulding
springtime may mean more strangers at our doors asking us to purchase products or contribute to causes.
What should you do if a solicitor rings your doorbell?
1. The most important thing to remember is: Never open the door to someone you do not know. All communication with a solicitor or any other stranger at your door should be through the door. Once you open the door to someone you don’t know, you are putting yourself and your loved ones at risk. If you have a solid wood door and no window nearby, consider installing a peephole.
Sheriff’s Office at 936-442-7797 or the Harris County Precinct 4 Constables Office at 281-376-3472. Report that there is a trespasser on your property who refuses to leave despite your request that he or she do so.
5. Don’t worry about hurting the solicitor’s feelings or making him or her angry. This person is invading your personal property. You have not asked this person to your home.
6. Don’t ignore a solicitor as a way of making him or her think that no one is home. The solicitor could be a potential thief who is ringing your doorbell as a way to determine if the house is empty.
solicitors from doing business in your neighborhood. However, it is crucial that all your neighbors take an active part in discouraging solicitors. If everyone in your neighborhood refuses to open their doors to strangers, solicitors will eventually realize that your neighborhood is not worth their time.
2. Make sure you have a No Solicitors sticker near or on the door, which can be obtained by joining The Woodlands Watch. A No Solicitors sticker puts solicitors on notice that you do not want their business. If they ignore the sticker, point to it (from inside the house) and walk away. If you do not have a way to see the solicitor from inside your home, speak through the door and tell them to leave.
3. If the solicitor refuses to leave, state (from inside your house) “Leave my property now. If you do not, I will call the police.” Although soliciting is not illegal, trespassing is. If you tell someone to leave your property and he or she does not, they are trespassing.
4. If the solicitor continues to harass you, call the Montgomery County

If you are not yet a member of The Woodlands Watch, contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 or neighbor@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.
