Plant for Pollinators
By Kendall Clark
“The monarch butterfly is an iconic North American species whose multigenerational migration and metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly has captured the imagination of millions of Americans...we hereby pledge to help restore habitat for the monarch and encourage our citizens to do the same so that these magnificent butterflies will once again flourish across our state and the continent.”
– FROM THE WOODLANDS TOWNSHIP PROCLAMATION
Beginning in 2018, The Woodlands Township pledged to help preserve pollinators and become a Monarch Champion as recognized by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). On April 25, 2018, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors delivered a proclamation to all residents of The Woodlands to protect the monarch butterfly and other pollinators. Residents can view the video of this proclamation on the Township website.
The Plight of Pollinators
The decline of monarch populations over the past 20 years has been well documented. More recently, a study by the U.S. Geological Society concluded that there is a substantial probability that monarch butterflies east of the Rockies could decline to such low levels that they face extinction. By June of this year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will determine whether to list the monarch
butterfly as endangered or threatened. This will conclude a five-year assessment following the petition to list the monarch under the Endangered Species Act in August, 2014.
At the moment, 74 pollinator species are on the federal Endangered Species list, including butterflies, bees, bats, moths, beetles, skippers and flies. What’s more is that the monarch migration is now recognized as an “endangered biological

Milkweed is the essential host plant for the monarch, and it’s also a favorite source of nectar for the adult butterfly.
phenomenon” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Considering that pollinators are a vital component of a functioning ecosystem and essential to the reproduction of over 80 percent of all flowering plants—not to mention that one in every three bites of food we eat is directly attributed to the work of pollinators—it’s easy to see why pollinator conservation efforts are so important.
The primary issues facing monarchs are the same that put all pollinators at risk: habitat loss, pesticide and herbicide overuse and disease.
In addition to these threats is one unique to monarchs: the decimation of its host plant, milkweed (Asclepias). Monarchs are completely dependent on milkweed if the species is to survive; it’s the only plant that hosts the female butterfly for laying eggs and is the single food source for her caterpillar offspring.
As many as 1.8 billion additional stems of milkweed plants may be needed in North America to return imperiled monarch butterflies to a sustainable population size, according to a recently published U.S. Geological Survey study
Plant for Pollinators Program
The Township’s new program, Plant for Pollinators, helps protect monarchs, bees and all butterflies in a number of ways. It identifies opportunities for reintroducing milkweed to our natural green spaces and areas that can be protected for pollinator habitat. Encouraging residents to plant a home pollinator garden is another key program component. And residents don’t need a home landscape to make an impact—a balcony container garden works just
as well. Imagine how many stems of milkweed can be restored just in our community with the addition of hundreds of resident pollinator gardens.
All who live, work and play in The Woodlands can be part of this project:
Learn – Take the gardening class, Pollinator Gardens, scheduled this month. See page 14. Consider attending the Home Habitat Seminar next month. (Class sizes are limited and registration is required.) Visit the demonstration garden at the Township Parks, Recreation and Environmental Services Department’s building. Follow the Environmental Services blog at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ environment.
Plant – Winter months are perfect for planning a new spring garden. Create a pollinator garden at your home, place of business or school. Informative guides to help you plan, plant and maintain a garden are viewable and printable from the Township website on the Plant for Pollinators page, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ plantforpollinators.
Get Involved. Volunteer – For the first time this year, The Woodlands Township will include planting milkweed as part of the Village Tree Planting. Volunteers
can help plant 1,000 milkweed plants to provide habitat for migrating monarch butterflies. Please see schedule on page 14.
Create A Home Pollinator Garden This Spring and Get It Registered
The time, space and dollar investment to make a home, school, business or church pollinator garden may be small, but its return is rich. When you include native plants in your landscape that bloom spring, summer and fall, you are rewarded with three seasons of visiting native bees and butterflies and the satisfaction of helping protect all pollinators. Register your garden so the milkweed, along with other recommended host and nectar plants in it, are included in The Woodlands-wide registry. More information about registering a pollinator garden can be found on the Plant for Pollinators page at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ plantforpollinators.
Watch for news, volunteer opportunities and class announcements on the Township’s website and subscribe to the Township Environmental Services Department blog so you don’t miss a thing.

Run for a Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association Office
By Karen Dempsey
Eachyear, elections are held for more than 100 volunteer leadership positions within our community. Volunteers are critical to The Woodlands; thousands of volunteer hours are necessary to carry out the governance of our community. As in the past, elections will continue to be held in February for the Residential Design Review Committees (RDRCs) and the Village Associations. The Woodlands Township Board of Directors election is held in November and follows a different process.
Residential Design Review Committees
The majority of properties in The Woodlands Township are encumbered with either The Woodlands Community Association Covenants or The Woodlands Association Covenants (both herein referred to as the Covenants). In 2010, these community associations transferred responsibility for Covenant administration to the Township as part of the governance transition, and the Covenants continue to be encumbered on property throughout The Woodlands. As prescribed by the Covenants, five-member resident-elected committees serve to facilitate property improvements of their peers. Elected to one-year terms, residents dedicate several hours each month to review the applications submitted by their neighbors for improvements to their property. Residents interested in ensuring that design standards are maintained in The Woodlands may be interested in filing for Residential Design Review Committee candidacy in their village.
The following Residential Design Review Committee positions are up for election in February 2019:
All Villages
• Up to five Residential Design Review Committee members to be elected for each village, all serving one-year terms. This includes two committees for the village of Indian Springs, which is divided into two geographic areas based on Covenant imposition.
Village Associations
Each of the villages has a civic association that facilitates activities specific to their village. Each village will have officer positions and/or area (neighborhood) representative positions open for the 2019 election. While officer duties may vary by position and/or specific village (refer to each village’s bylaws at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov), all villages seek enthusiastic residents looking to volunteer their service and leadership for their closest Woodlands neighbors.
The following Village Association positions are up for election in February 2019:
Alden Bridge Village Association
• 10 At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association
• 18 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
College Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
Creekside Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Events Chair (one-year term)
• 11 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
Grogan’s Mill Village Association
• Seven At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Indian Springs Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Panther Creek Village Association
• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Sterling Ridge Village Association
• Eight At-Large Village Directors (two-year term)
Filing for Office
Filing packets and related information can be found on The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, at Residential Design Review Committee meetings and through the Village Association presidents. Filing for all community positions began Thursday, December 27, 2018, and continues through January 17, 2019, at 5 p.m.
In accordance with the current election procedures, candidates who are interested in running, but do not file by the deadline will be able to run as a write-in candidate only if they file as such by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.
Cancellation of Uncontested Elections
In the February 2019 election, for any Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association that does not have a contested race as of 5 p.m. on January 23, 2019, the entity’s election will be canceled and the seating and/or filling of vacancies will proceed in accordance with the entity’s bylaws.

SAVE THE LEAVES
Every winter, trees like red and white oak, winged elm, sweet gum, maple, pecan and many others begin to shed their brown, yellow and red leaves, covering the ground in a colorful quilt. Following timehonored tradition, many of us rake the leaves into piles, put them in green waste bags and forget about them.
We should remember though, that leaves contain 75 - 80 percent of the valuable nutrients each tree has taken in through the spring and summer. Those nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorous and
potassium, the three major nutrients necessary for plant growth. The leaves also contain carbon, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, boron, manganese, zinc, molybdenum and copper, all elements that plants require to be healthy and strong.
Throwing them away and then buying expensive fertilizer for the lawn and other plants seems a waste, since we already have a large supply of quality fertilizer at our feet. There are three ways we can reclaim and reuse this natural resource.
First, we can use a mulching lawnmower, running it over the leaves. This shreds the leaves and places them back into the soil where the nutrients can be recycled. A word of advice: don’t allow the leaves to lie on the grass without being mulched first. The leaves will compact and keep sunlight off the lawn. This can result in dead patches and encourage fungal infections.
Second, we can collect them and use them as natural mulch for our bedding
By Bob Dailey, WJPA
plants. It’s simple. Just rake them onto our beds. The leaves will decay, adding their nutrients back into the soil around your plants. In this case, you can choose to mulch them first, but this is not necessary.
Or third, we can compost them. If you’re not familiar with composting, the Environmental Services Department of The Woodlands Township offers a composting class the first Saturday of each month from October through March. The classes begin at 10 a.m. and end at 11 a.m. and are taught by master gardeners and a master compost expert. For more information about these classes, visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ environment.
An important note: DO NOT put leaves, grass clippings or anything else into the storm drains. The accumulation of debris inside the storm drains can impede the flow of water during heavy rains and that same debris can cause serious problems with downstream waterways.
Fallen leaves can be an asset to lawns and gardens, so residents should put them to work in the yard instead of in trash bags.

MAKE A RESOLUTION IN 2019 TO Have A Safe Home and Neighborhood
By Marian Montgomery Leck
Aswe begin 2019, it is time to reflect on our resolutions for the New Year. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch encourages you to include a safe home and neighborhood in your plans. Crime prevention is a group effort and requires all of us to take a proactive role in our safety. Knowing how to protect yourself and your property, and joining with your neighbors to make your neighborhood safer can reduce the opportunity for crime in The Woodlands.
One of the most basic crime prevention techniques includes the Crime Triangle, which identifies three elements that must be present in order for crime to occur:
DESIRE of a criminal to commit a crime; ABILITY to commit the crime; and the OPPORTUNITY for the crime to be committed
Fortunately, you have control over one of the elements of the Crime Triangle: Opportunity. By removing the opportunity, you can break the Crime Triangle and contribute to the community policing effort in The Woodlands.
By following these rules, you can take away the criminal’s most valuable resource: opportunity.
1. If you see something, say something!
Make the call if you see something suspicious.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office 936-442-7797

2. Join The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch! Get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other. To get started, contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch at 281-210-3800. Like and Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ townshipneighborhoodwatch.
3. Increase visibility around your home. Keep your home well lit at night and trim landscaping.
4. Lock your doors and windows while you are home or step away for “just a few minutes.”
5. Activate your home alarm. Your alarm must be registered online with the appropriate authorities.
Montgomery County ....................

6. Always close your garage door. It only takes seconds to enter and steal your valuables. An open garage is also a prime way to gain access to your home.
7. Do not open the door to anyone you do not know, including solicitors. Contact the Neighborhood Watch for a No Solicitor sticker.
8. Hide your things, lock your car and take your keys! Lock your vehicle and roll up all windows.
Hide valuables from sight, or take items with you. Park in areas that are well lit and not secluded. Activate your vehicle’s alarm system.
9. Sign up for Vacation Watch. This allows law enforcement patrol deputies to check the security of your residence while you are away.

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS
Alden Bridge
It’s 2019 and those of us in Alden Bridge are looking forward to another wonderful year! We appreciate all the hard work of the residents who made our village beautiful with their festively decorated homes and yards during the holiday season. It was really difficult to choose the winners of our Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest!
This year’s first village association board/residents’ meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Make it your resolution to attend at least some of our meetings this year. We want to get to know you and what your concerns are so we can work with you to help. The meetings are a good source of information on what’s going on in our village and The Woodlands overall. We schedule informative speakers about every other month, and receive updates from the Sheriff’s Department and the Township Board each month also. Stop by and introduce yourself.
Our village association elections are held in February, and we’d definitely appreciate your votes. This year, Alden Bridge will elect 10 at-large Area Representatives and five members of our Residential Design Review Committee (RDRC). You can learn more about the upcoming election on the Township website. Filing ends this month. Consider running for a position on our board or RDRC. It’s a great way to give back to your community and have some fun at the same time.
As usual, we’ll be busy with activities for our residents throughout the year. You can join us in cheering on The Woodlands Marathon runners, bring the kids to hunt eggs at the annual Spring Festival and nominate your friends and neighbors (or yourself!)
for our Yard of the Month competition that goes on from May through September. In summer, you can join us in the Fourth of July Parade or come along on our bus-to-the-ball-game outing to see the Astros. As the year progresses, you’ll be able to decorate your home and yard to be judged in Halloween’s Spookiest House contest and next year’s Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest. There’s never a dull moment. You can stay informed about our activities through our website, www.aldenbridge.org, our Facebook page and by subscribing to our monthly e-newsletter (send your email address to aldenbridge@gmail.com). We’ll need volunteers for many of these activities, so please contact us to sign up. It’s rewarding and fun!
Don’t hesitate to reach out to us by email or through our website if you have any questions or concerns about life in our village. We’re always here for you. We’re looking forward to meeting residents and being of assistance in another new year!

Cochran’s Crossing
January is the time to look forward to the coming year. Maybe some resolutions will be announced. For Cochran’s Crossing, that means continuing many of the activities that have been on the agenda in past years. There are some that support The Woodlands as well as others specifically for the Village of Cochran’s Crossing. Examples include the Fall Festival for the whole area, and scholarship opportunities for students in our high schools.
Our village association board has also been a resource for communication. Of course, there is the monthly community magazine, but we also have
a website, Facebook page and newsletter. The monthly board meetings are open to the public and provide opportunities to meet with representatives of organizations that impact our community. Updates and answers to questions of interest are part of those presentations.
A good example will be the board meeting this month, when Dr. Curtis Null, the Superintendent of Conroe Independent School District (CISD), will be the speaker. He will cover many of the challenges facing the district and how those challenges are being met.
Dr. Null is well qualified to follow the outstanding example set by Don Stockton, who retired last year after 15 years as CISD Superintendent and 32 years with CISD.
The January meeting will also demonstrate another way our village association supports area schools. In response to applications by elementary teachers in the Village of Cochran’s Crossing, financial grants will be awarded to teachers for projects not covered in the CISD budget.
Remember that elections for the Area Representatives will be coming up in February. There will be more reminders, but for the Village of Cochran’s Crossing, there are 18 board positions and they are up on an annual basis. This is an opportunity for current board members to be re-elected and new directors to join.
Except for December, the board meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms.

EVENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
College Park
Filing has begun for all Village Association elections. Elections will be held in February for any contested seats. College Park will be filling seats for nine at-large directors plus president and secretary. Residents of Windsor Hills, Harper’s Landing and Grogan’s Forest are eligible to file for a seat on the College Park board. Information on filing is available on the Township website. We would like you to consider joining us. The time commitment is for one monthly meeting and one weekend event/activity a month. Perhaps you will commit to attending a few meetings before deciding if you want to join us as a member of the board.
Whether or not you decide to become a board member, there are opportunities to support College Park in some of the many community-wide events. Earth Day GreenUp is coming up in March. Volunteers throughout the community will be contributing to clean-up efforts in targeted locations around our community. This is an event for the entire family to join in and have a lasting impact both personally and for humanity. You can also support our village by turning off your sprinklers (if you have not already done so) and filling out the online pledge to save water. Your participation in any community-wide events supports our college scholarship program.
College Park residents collected more than 200 pounds of batteries for the 3R Bazaar in November. The neighborhood of Windsor Hills collected almost half of the total amount. We appreciate all residents of College Park for making battery recycling a priority. Start collecting your used batteries today for the America Recycles event in November 2019!
High school seniors who live in College Park are eligible to apply for a college scholarship to be awarded this spring. In addition to living in one of the three village areas of Harper’s Landing, Windsor Hills or Grogan’s Forest, applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in community service.
College Park Village would like to thank the dedicated College Park High School students from the ROTC who volunteered at our annual Poolooza last May and at the Spooktacular in October. Year after year, they demonstrate a willingness to serve and have made all the difference in the success of our events. Thank you!

year and bring them to the Bazaar; this is a challenge amongst the villages in The Woodlands, and the winner with the most pounds of batteries wins money toward their Education Funds. Bring all your batteries to recycle; however only the alkaline batteries will go toward the challenge.
Another challenge offered every year by The Woodlands is the WaterWise Challenge. We ask you to pledge to shut your water off annually between October 15 and April 15. This conserves water, allows your grass to go dormant and green up in the spring. Learn more about water conservation and take the pledge at www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/waterconservation.
We attend many fundraising charitable events in The Woodlands throughout the year and we look forward to having as many volunteers from our community attend these events with us. Let’s make a difference together. “Like us” on our Facebook page and attend your monthly meetings to get news on upcoming opportunities to give back to this great community we live in. We attend these events to raise awareness of our great village and our commitment to be a supporting partner of The Woodlands community and all it has to offer. Our education fund is a part of why we attend these events; we look forward to participation from our area schools at these events for added dollars to be distributed to your school for much needed supplies.
Look for more information and happenings in Creekside Park Village on our Facebook Page or on our website at www.creeksideparkvillage.com. We look forward to seeing you at our monthly meetings held the first Tuesday of every month, except when noted, at The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park.

Grogan’s Mill
The Grogan’s Mill Village Association and The Woodlands Farmer’s
Market at Grogan’s Mill, wish to thank Whole Foods for selecting our Farmer’s Market to participate in Whole Foods quarterly Community Giving Day last October. Village volunteers were well supported by store staff, enjoyed visiting with customers and appreciated showcasing the Farmer’s Market.
Whole Foods’ generous donation will be given to schools in Grogan’s Mill to help students with computers and supplies that are not covered by school district funds. Whole Foods’ incredible generosity in supporting our community is appreciated by all.
Have you pledged to turn off your sprinkler system for the winter? If not, join the Water Wise Village Challenge pledge by signing up at https://www. research.net/r/T7N2SHH. Every Grogan’s Mill household that signs up gives a point to Grogan’s Mill. Villages with the most points will earn significant cash awards for scholarship funding. You can also sign up in person at the The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 8203 Millenium Forest Drive, or do so by phone at 281-210-3800.
Some gravity sewer lines in Grogan’s Mill have been identified by the San Jacinto River Authority for rehabilitation to avoid collection system failure, sewage overflows and permit violations. The following lines are planned for rehabilitation: the northern portion (3,198 linear feet) of an 18-inch gravity sewer on Grogan’s Point, 752 linear feet of a 36-inch gravity sewer along Leeward Cove Drive west of Lake Woodlands, and 530 linear feet of a 24-inch gravity sewer underneath Lake Woodlands. To see exactly where these sections re located, go to http://www.sjra.net/woodlands/ construction/grogansmill/gravity-mainrehab-segments-35-50-and-50a/. Some lane closures may be expected.
There are currently two openings for directors on the Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board, open for election on February 18 for a term of four years. If you are interested in serving your community and would like to be appointed, please reach out through
https://www.grogansmill.org/contact, or directly with any village board member. Applications for the February elections will be accepted by the Township on their website or in person up until 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019.
We miss board members Mike Tabbert and Jody Ronzio who have moved away. They have been of great service to Grogan’s Mill. We also miss Alana Ashley who resigned for personal reasons.
Brian Ferris has been a terrific manager of the Farmer’s Market, but he couldn’t pass up the lure of Montana, along with board member Mike Tabbert. We now welcome Laura Bennett as our new manager. She has been a Woodlands resident for three years, moving here from Missouri. She was an active volunteer for the Missouri National Guard, and two of her three sons are soldiers with the National Guard. Profits from Farmer’s Market vendor fees are returned to our community through various philanthropic contributions, school donations, scholarships and community programs.
The market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. In addition to our regular lineup of vendors that sell everything from produce to eggs to meat to artisan goods, most Saturdays we have live music and a food truck. Bring your own bags to save on plastic. Check out our website at https://www. grogansmill.org/fmabout or look us up on Facebook at https://www.facebook. com/GrogansMillVillageAssociation/. On either site you can sign up for our weekly email blast.
The Grogan’s Mill Village Association has rescheduled its monthly board meetings from 6:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. usually on the third Monday of the month. We hope you will attend.

Elections for the village association board and RDRC will occur February 11 through February 15, 2019, and will be held at The Woodlands Township.
Community involvement is about showing the next generation the importance of community service and the positive impact it has on not only those in need, but the ones performing the service. The current board members look forward to meeting the new candidates and area representatives.
Taste of the Village
On October 27, 2018, the annual Taste of the Village was enjoyed by all who attended and generated a ton of buzz for the local businesses that shared their incredible food and services. All of the proceeds will fund the Indian Springs Village Association Community Service Scholarships as well as the Lloyd Matthews Scholarship for the Montgomery County Women’s Center.
Attendance this year was up after increasing awareness by sharing the event across Facebook and the website. In addition, we had the most raffle prizes ever and a few participants won multiple times since they bought several tickets. Prizes this year included Houston Texans tickets, $250 H-E-B gift cards, rounds of golf at the country club, a membership to CYCLEBAR, a cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes and numerous restaurant gift cards.
The new year presents the residents of Panther Creek with many opportunities to participate in keeping The Woodlands a “real hometown.” Panther Creek Village Association exists to help residents enjoy and benefit from the many resources in our community. 2019 will be a busy year in Panther Creek Village with elections, flea markets, baseball outings, picnics, parades, holiday lighting contests, scholarship awards, guest speakers, bazaars and much more. Come join us and help enrich The Woodlands and enrich your life by being an active member of this great community.
We would like to thank all of the attendees, businesses, volunteers, entertainers and raffle prize sponsors for another successful Taste of the Village. We look forward to seeing you at the 2019 Taste of the Village in October.

The holiday season is now past and it was busy. Our annual Holiday Lighting Contest was held. Watch here next month for the names of the winning individual home and the winning neighborhood. We also re-elected four members of The Woodlands Township Board. They were Gordy Bunch, Brian Boniface, John A. Brown, and Bruce Rieser. In addition to current issues, they will be working on plans for incorporation that will be presented to us, the voters in The Woodlands, for our decisions for the future.
Panther Creek Village Association has been expanded to open more opportunities for your participation in this community service. Filing to run for positions on the board is open until January 7, 2019, for the election in February. Also in February, the election for members of the Residential Design Review Committee will be held.
Our monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m., the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building on Technology Forest Boulevard (just off New Trails). All residents are invited to attend. Community leaders and civic groups present useful information and make themselves available for your questions and suggestions. Sheriff’s Department deputies present detailed reports of crime prevention and criminal activities in our neighborhood. Our Woodlands Program Specialist from the international award-winning Neighborhood Services Department keeps us informed of the wide range of events taking place in our village and also keeps us up to date on the actions and issues before The Woodlands Township Board. January and February are typically the coldest months of the year in The Woodlands. As the weather turns colder, many families will move outside to enjoy the winter weather together. But before doing so, you should know the signs and symptoms of cold-related emergencies and how to provide basic care.
Although extremely cold environmental temperatures increase the risk for cold-related emergencies, these emergencies can also occur at more moderate environmental temperatures, too. Factors such as wind chill can increase a person’s risk for cold-related illnesses, as can age and general health. If someone is wet or sweaty (after a swim, a long run or some backyard football) – or if it is windy – they are more likely to suffer a cold-related emergency.
The following are the two types of cold-related emergencies to watch out for.
Cold-Related Emergencies What to Watch For
By Caroline Johnson, Lifeguard Coordinator
Know the signs and symptoms of cold-related emergencies and how to provide basic care.
HYPOTHERMIA
Hypothermia occurs when a victim’s entire body cools because its ability to keep warm fails. Hypothermia is life threatening if care is not provided.
Signs and Symptoms: uncontrollable shivering, numbness, glassy stare, apathy, weakness or impaired judgment, loss of consciousness.
Care: To care for hypothermia, first CALL 9-1-1. If you can, gently move the victim to a warm place and remove any wet clothing. Warm the body gradually by wrapping them in blankets or putting dry clothing on the victim. Do not warm them up too quickly by, for example, submerging them in a hot bath. Be sure to cover the head since a significant amount of body heat is lost through the head. If the victim is conscious, have him or her drink liquids that are warm, but not hot, and do not contain alcohol or caffeine.
FROSTBITE
Frostbite occurs when specific body parts freeze from having been exposed to the cold. The severity of frostbite depends on factors such as air temperature, length of exposure and wind speed.
Signs and Symptoms: Frostbite can cause the loss of body extremities – the nose, fingers, hands, arms, toes, feet, and/or legs. The signs and symptoms of frostbite include a lack of feeling, swelling, skin that appears waxy, is cold or discolored. Care: First, move the victim out of the cold and CALL 9-1-1. If there is a chance that the affected area of the body might be exposed to the freezing elements again and re-freeze, or if you are close to (within 10 minutes) a medical facility, do not attempt to warm the area. But if safe, warm the affected area by soaking it in warm water until normal color returns and then loosely bandage the area with dry, sterile dressings.
Be sure to wear enough layers, including gloves, socks and a hat, and remember to protect those in your family who are most susceptible to these types of emergencies, such as children and the elderly or infirm. We hope you can get outside and enjoy our parks and pathways this winter – but be safe while doing so!

RESOLVE TO RECYCLE RIGHT:
ACCEPTED ITEMS IN THE WOODLANDS
By Zoe Killian
As we kick off 2019, make a resolution to keep our recycling system working by following these useful guidelines. Remember to put only the accepted items in your recycling cart. Contaminants such as plastic bags, tanglers (cords or string), food waste, hazardous waste, Styrofoam and any other items not specified can destroy machinery and cause other good recyclables to be landfilled. Although they do not belong in your curbside cart, other items can be recycled through different collections in the community. See list at right for examples. For more information about recycling and opportunities to recycle other items, please call the Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800 or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/recycling and select the Recycle More Guide.

Txdot To Repair I-45 Bridge Over Rayford/Sawdust Road
The Texas Department of Transportation is planning major repair work on the Interstate 45 bridge over Rayford/Sawdust Road starting in January. Construction crews plan on full closures of the southbound I-45 lanes around the bridge for an entire weekend in January, followed by the northbound lanes. This work could take consecutive weekends, in which all interstate traffic will be diverted to the feeder roads. Drivers should plan for major delays during these weekends. Montgomery County Precinct 3 will update residents when specific dates are set for these closures.
Woodlands Parkway Widening
Montgomery County Precinct 3 continues working toward completing the widening of Woodlands Parkway between I-45 and Grogan’s Mill. The project is moving along ahead of schedule and is estimated to be completed by April 2019.

New Creative Concept and Mission Statement Adopted by Visit The Woodlands
Board of Directors A Message from Visit The Woodlands
AsVisit The Woodlands continues to market The Woodlands as a destination for convention and corporate business as well as leisure travel, a new creative concept was recently presented to the Visit The Woodlands Board of Directors. The job of Visit The Woodlands is to attract out-of-town visitors, which means you may not see our advertising placements locally, but they will be featured in national travel or industry publications such as Texas
Monthly, Texas Highways and meeting planner publications.
Through a rigorous process with its agency of record, Adcetera, Visit The Woodlands Board of Directors and staff were able to define its message which will be reflected in upcoming advertising placements and a new website in 2019.
“People know The Woodlands is a great place to live,” said Bruce Rieser, Chairman of Visit The Woodlands. “But we’re also a premier destination for leisure travelers,
corporate meetings and conventions. This new creative direction accurately and artfully reflects that.”
A two-day photoshoot was held in August 2018 to support the new creative and advertising placements under this new concept labeled, “We Hear That A Lot.” Focusing on the unique amenities and experiences that visitors often have while in The Woodlands, this new concept will continue to bring more brand awareness to our destination. In addition, Visit The Woodlands has also updated its Mission Statement to better align with its goals:
To establish The Woodlands, Texas, as a beautiful, lively and welcoming destination recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for first-class business, convention and leisure travel.
The creative concept is just one of the ways Visit The Woodlands is spreading its message. With an increased presence at national and international sales trade shows and destination events, a continued focus on digital and innovative technology approaches and more involvement in the industry’s national and international advocacy for travel to Texas, the staff and Board of Directors are excited to see what success will result from 2019’s initiatives.
