What would you do? The person beside you clutches their chest, turns ashen and falls to the floor. This person could be a spouse, child, family member, friend or total stranger. Would you know what to do?
The statistics for cardiac-related emergencies and their outcomes are staggering. Each year more than 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest outside of a medical facility – almost a thousand each day. On average, only about eight percent will survive. Nationwide, only four victims out of 10 will receive CPR from a bystander. Local statistics suggest that in our community, that number may even be lower. Every minute that someone goes without CPR, their chance of survival decreases by as much as 10 percent. In 2008, The American Heart Association released new CPR guidelines to include the option of Hands-Only CPR (without breath interventions). If performed immediately, Hands-Only CPR can significantly increase the chance of survival for a cardiac arrest victim. As a bystander, your actions can only help. Start by calling 9-1-1. Then begin administering Hands-Only CPR until emergency personnel arrive to help. (CPR with rescue breaths is recommended for young children, victims of drowning or people who collapse due to breathing problems.)
To raise awareness of the lifesaving value of CPR and how it supports our first responders, The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch invites you to participate in the Village Challenge for Hands-Only CPR. The Township Neighborhood Watch is teaming up with The Woodlands Fire Department,

Every year about this time, residents begin calling The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA) to report their grass is dying. Their beautiful, green, lush St. Augustine has turned a sickly brownish yellow. They worry that it’s not getting enough water, so they water profusely. They think that some disease or insects may be attacking their lawn, so they pile on pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers.
St. Augustine is a warm season grass. This turf grass is supposed to look brown and dead in the winter. When the soil temperature drops below 55 degrees, the grass goes dormant. Homeowners shouldn’t panic, nor should they use the myriad of panaceas offered on the market.
This is not a recommended practice. Fungal infections are particularly damaging to turf grass in southeast Texas. And what causes fungal infections?
Well, fungi loves humidity and wetness. Watering lawns during the winter is the major cause of fungal infections. The damage is done when the grass is dormant, so the infections are not visible then. Come spring and early summer though, and the presence of fungi is evident from the great yellowing patches of turf. By then, the damage has already been done. Instead of spending bucks on fungicides, just stop watering. We get enough rain in the winter to provide what little water that dormant St. Augustine might require.
Now is the time to get ready for spring. A soil test might be a good idea. Texas A&M offers a great soil test for about $15. Use your computer search engine to browse for Texas A&M Soil, Water and Forage Testing lab. There are detailed instructions on how to take a soil sample, how to fill out an application
By Bob Dailey, WJPAand how to send the whole package to the lab. St. Augustine turf does best in soil with a pH of around 6.5. The test will provide empirical data which will help in maintaining a healthy and green lawn in spring, summer and fall.
Keep your lawn in good condition during the winter months by not overwatering and by taking advantage of local soil testing facilities.
Residents can obtain test bags from the Montgomery County Office of Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, 9024 Airport Road, Conroe, TX 77303, or at The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency, 2455 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77380.

2018 •
your calendars for the annual Arbor Day Celebration in The Woodlands on Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hughes Landing. The annual celebration is sponsored by The Woodlands® Development Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation®, The Woodlands Township and Brightview.
The lovable mascot of The Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone®, will also celebrate his birthday along with his mascot friends. There will be free tree seedlings, giant inflatables, games, face painters, balloon artists and music.
Each year, elections are held for more than 100 volunteer leadership positions within our community. Volunteers are critical to The Woodlands as thousands of volunteer hours are necessary to carry out our community governance. As in the past, elections will continue to be held in February for the Residential Design Review Committees (RDRCs) and the Village Associations. The Woodlands Township Board of Directors election is held in November and follows a different process.
The majority of properties in The Woodlands Township are encumbered with either The Woodlands Community Association Covenants or The Woodlands Association Covenants (both herein referred to as the Covenants). In 2010, these community associations transferred responsibility for Covenant administration to the Township as part of the governance transition, and the Covenants continue to be encumbered on property throughout The Woodlands. As prescribed by the Covenants, five-member resident-elected committees serve to facilitate property improvements of their peers. Elected to one-year terms, residents dedicate several hours each month to review the applications submitted by their neighbors for improvements to their property. Residents interested in ensuring that design standards are maintained in The Woodlands may be interested in filing for Residential Design Review Committee candidacy in their village. The following Residential Design Review Committee positions are up for election in February 2018 in All Villages:
• Up to five Residential Design Review Committee members to be elected for each village, all serving one-year terms. This includes two committees for the village of Indian Springs, which is divided into two geographic areas based on Covenant imposition.
Each of the villages has a civic association that facilitates activities specific to their village. Each village will have officer positions and/or area (neighborhood) representative positions open for the 2018 election. While officer duties may vary by position and/or specific village (refer to each village’s bylaws at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov), all villages seek enthusiastic residents looking to volunteer their service and leadership for their closest Woodlands neighbors. The following Village Association positions are up for election in February 2018:
Alden Bridge Village Association
• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association
• 18 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
College Park Village Association

It’s another bright, new year in Alden Bridge! We appreciated all the hard work of the residents who made our village beautiful with their festively decorated homes and yards. We had a very hard time selecting the winners of our Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest!
We’ll have the first 2018 village association board/residents’ meeting on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Please consider attending our meetings this year; we appreciate resident comments – both positive and negative – and want to work with you on issues of concern. We receive reports from the Sheriff’s Department and the Township Board, so the meetings are a good source of information on what’s going on in our village and The Woodlands as a whole. To top it all off, we often have very informative speakers, such as our superintendent of schools, county judge, commissioner, and other elected officials, heads of various Township departments, Economic Development Partnership and the Chamber. This month’s speaker hasn’t been identified yet, so watch our Facebook page for that information.
Village elections are held in February, and your vote is very important. This year, Alden Bridge is electing nine at-large Area Representatives and five members of our Residential Design Review Committee (RDRC). You can learn more about the upcoming election on the Township website – filing ends this month. Have you ever considered running for a position on our board or RDRC? Think about it –we’d welcome your participation.
We have many activities planned this year for Alden Bridge residents! We’ll be cheering on runners in The Woodlands Marathon, the annual Spring Festival is scheduled for the Saturday before Easter, our scholarship competition is held in the spring, along with the Yard of the Month
program that runs through summer and precedes Halloween’s Spookiest House contest. We’ll participate in the Fourth of July Parade, the semi-annual village Flea Markets, and we take a bus full of residents to our annual World Series Champion Astros baseball game outing. You’ll find information about our activities on our website, www.aldenbridge.org, our Facebook page and by subscribing to our monthly e-newsletter (send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org). We’ll need volunteers for many of these activities, so please contact us to sign up. It’s rewarding and fun!
If you can’t attend our meetings, then please contact us by email (info@aldenbridge.org) or through our website (www.aldenbridge.org) if you have any questions or concerns about life in our village. We’re always here for you. We’re looking forward to meeting residents and being of assistance in another New Year!
Submitted by Darla D. BellResilience and consistency are the two words that best represent 2017. They represent Hurricane Harvey and the Houston Astros, and both are good words to help guide Cochran’s Crossing in 2018. The village association was certainly consistent when it came to the Astros.
We began with a trip to an Astros game in May and followed them throughout the year. There’s a good chance we will again announce a trip to see the Astros early in the season. That would be consistent and, since most all our World Series champions will be back, two buses may be necessary.
Resilience was demonstrated during and after Hurricane Harvey. Although not impacted as much as some other areas, Cochran’s Crossing did not escape untouched. However, Cochran’s Crossing and The Woodlands responded quickly.
Resilience is also being demonstrated by the plans already in motion for the 2018 Fall Festival. The 2017 Festival was rained out. It was a hard call and it was the first cancellation in the Festival’s more-than20-year history. All was in place, but the grounds at Shadowbend Park were soaked.
Leadership of the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association continues to be resilient. However, if you are interested in serving on the board and helping serve our community, there are sometimes openings on the board during the year and elections will be coming in February. Information on the village associations and residential design review committee elections can be obtained from The Woodlands Township at 2801 Technology Forest Drive, and on our Facebook page, Village of Cochran’s Crossing Association.
For more on the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board contact Gary Conwell, board secretary, at 281-387-6986 or www.cochranscrossing.com. With the exception of December, board meetings are held at 7 p.m. at the Township meeting rooms the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Submitted by Gary Conwell
Filing has begun for all village association elections. Elections will be held in February for any contested seats. College Park will be filling seats for nine at-large directors plus treasurer and vice president. Residents of Windsor Hills, Harper’s Landing and Grogan’s Forest are eligible to file for a seat on the College Park board. Information on filing is available on the Township website.
Whether or not you decide to become a board member, there are opportunities to support your College Park Village Association in some of the many community-wide events. Earth Day Green-Up is coming up in March. Volunteers throughout the community will be contributing to clean-up efforts in targeted locations around our community. This is an event for the entire family to join in and have a lasting impact both personally and for humanity. You can also support our village by turning off your sprinklers, if you have not already done so, and filling out the online pledge to save water. Your participation in any community-wide events supports our college scholarship program.
Several residents were recently trained through the County Attorney’s office to be allowed legally to pick up bandit signs. These are signs that, when left in right of way areas, tend to give our neighborhood a poor appearance. We appreciate their volunteerism so that our neighborhoods remain attractive and vibrant!
At a recent meeting, we were advised by one of our residents of the importance of safety around railroad tracks. A railroad right of way extends 50 feet on either side of the tracks. Trains can extend up to six feet beyond the track. Stay out of railroad right of way areas and warn your children to stay away from railroad tracks.
High school seniors who live in The Village of College Park are eligible to apply for one of the college scholarships to be awarded this spring. In addition to living in one of the three village areas of Harper’s Landing, Windsor Hills or Grogan’s Forest, applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in community service.
College Park village would like to publicly thank the College Park High School students from the Ambassadors and the ROTC who volunteered at our annual Poolooza last May and at the Spooktacular in October. They demonstrated a willingness to serve and made all the difference in the success of our event. Thank you!

January is here and we are halfway through the Water-Wise Challenge. This awesome village challenge not only helps the villages of The Woodlands conserve water, but also helps villages earn muchneeded donation dollars for their education scholarships. Residents of Creekside Park can earn points for Creekside Park Village by pledging to conserve water by shutting of your automated sprinkler system between October 15 and April 15 every year. Signup begins in August and extra points are earned if you sign up early. If you have not signed up, please help make Creekside Park number one by pledging online between now and April 15, 2018, at www.surveymonkey.com/r/GDZTGKG. In addition to pledging to turn off your automated sprinkler system for the winter months, you should take time to have your system checked by Wise Guys.
MUD 386 is a participating district in the Wise Guys program. This program offers homeowners a free evaluation of their systems. The winter months are a slower time of year, so take advantage of this program by signing up at the following link, http://bit.ly/JDocQE
We look forward to seeing you at our monthly meetings held the first Tuesday of every month, except when noted, at The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park. Look for more in Creekside Park Village on our Facebook Page or on our website at www.creeksideparkvillage.com.
Happy New Year to all and we look forward to seeing you around the village!
Submitted by Lisa PurtellFlooding in Grogan’s Point during Hurricane Harvey continues to be an issue, as discussed at the Grogan’s Point Resident Association meeting on November 13, 2017. Jim Stinson, general manager of The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA), presented a draft version of hydraulic models which showed flooding progress during Harvey. While in need of tweaking, it dramatically revealed the progress of flooding. The two MUDs which serve Grogan’s Point (MUD 1 & MUD 46) have jointly funded an improved “2D” model (flooding and rainfall by time) in order to test what more can be done to mitigate flooding. Work on the model should be completed by early spring. If you would like to view the animated model or have ideas that might help mitigate flooding, contact the WJPA.
Grogan’s Mill won, hands down, the most recent Village Challenge to recycle old CDs, DVDs and plastic jewel cases. More than 645 pounds were collected, about 600 more pounds than the runner-up. Thanks to John Yours and other volunteers for many hours of work sorting the recycled material.
The next Village Challenge is to encourage people to get free Hands-Only CPR training. Each year, more than 350,000 people will suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside of a medical facility. Every minute that someone goes without CPR reduces their chance of survival by as much as 10 percent. Nationwide, only about four out of 10 victims will receive CPR from a bystander. Be prepared. New techniques are hands-only – no mouth-to-mouth breath intervention. Free drop-in training will be offered at each of The Woodlands fire stations. It is straightforward and takes only 20 minutes. Training sessions start on Saturday, February 3, 2018, and other Saturdays through April 14, 2018. To be prepared and help Grogan’s Mill be first in the Village Challenge, contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch at 281-210-3800 or email
neighbor@thewoodlandstownship-tx.org to pick the date and location that suits you best.
Grogan’s Mill residents did their part to help The Woodlands earn the top spot in the nation by supporting National Night Out. Hats off to Doris Provencio, program specialist, for her hard work in organizing and helping The Woodlands earn this honor.
Seven positions on the Grogan’s Mill board are up for election. If you are interested in being a board member to support your community, applications are now available on The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov. The deadline for submission is January 18, 2018.

2018 presents the residents of Panther Creek with many opportunities to participate in keeping The Woodlands a “real hometown.” Your Panther Creek Village Association exists to help residents enjoy and benefit from the many resources in our community. 2018 will be a busy year in the Panther Creek village with elections, flea markets, a baseball outing to watch our National Champion Astros, picnics, parades, holiday lighting contests, scholarship awards, guest speakers, bazaars and much more. Help enrich The Woodlands and your life by being an active member of this great community.
All residents are invited to attend our regular board meetings. Many of your neighbors attended our meetings, and seeing what fun we have and what good we do, have joined the board as area representatives. Your neighbors who have served as area representatives and
officers have included Everett Ison, Dan Lewis, Kim Lewis, Denise Judy, Randall Kruchten, Brian Leavitt, Gene Lochridge, Dewey Lockwood, Hartley Mackintosh, Kevin Currey, Andrew Freeman, Mindy Reynolds, Charlie Tunal, Synda Wilson, Stephanie Zertuche, Damon Palermo, Dick Franks, Walter Lisiewski, William Tunal, Kevin Currey, and Paul Gebolys. We have expanded the number of board positions for 2018.
Our monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m., the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building on Technology Forest Boulevard. Community leaders and civic groups present useful information and make themselves available for your questions and suggestions. Sheriff’s Department deputies present detailed reports of crime prevention and criminal activities in our neighborhood. The program specialist from the award-winning Neighborhood Services Department keeps us informed of the wide range of upcoming events taking place in our village, and also keeps us updated on the actions and issues before The Woodlands Township Board. Our board members also report on their work at community-wide committees on residential design review, local policing and parks and recreation.
Congratulations to the voters who turned out to vote for The Woodlands Township Board. John McMullan and Ann Snyder were re-elected and Carol Stromatt has joined the Board of Directors. If you are unable to attend the regular Township Board meetings, remember that your village association is a convenient and more informal forum to get neighborhood issues addressed.

Sterling Ridge residents who have already signed up for the Water-Wise Village Challenge, thanks! There is still time to help a Sterling Ridge student, while at the same time conserving water. Help Sterling Ridge Village Association to be one of the top three villages to earn the most points and receive donations that help the village association provide grants to the PTOs of Coulson Tough, Deretchin and Cedric Smith Elementary Schools. Pledges may be submitted online, or in person, at The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department, 8203 Millennium Forest Drive.
While this year’s 11th Annual Sterling Ridge Village BBQ Challenge & Kids Festival at Cranebrook Park was a HUGE SUCCESS, we rely on sponsorship funds raised to help provide grants to the elementary schools serving Sterling Ridge. We need your help too so that we can help more kids of Sterling Ridge. To make your 2018 donations, please email Ms. K. Shaw at klynda@gmail.com.
Sterling Ridge Village Association board members participated in the 3R Bazaar at the Township’s Parks, Recreation and Environmental Services facility on November 11, 2017. The Buy Recycled Boutique was open for individuals to start their Christmas shopping. This year’s Village Challenge involved collecting CD/DVD disks, jewel boxes and cases. We earned money for our scholarship fund based on the amount that we collected.
The next board meeting will be Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd.

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch has been honored by The National Association of Town Watch for their efforts during the 2017 National Night Out Campaign, with the top prize in Category #2 for Populations 100,000 to 300,000. “This award is the result of an outstanding team effort,” said Marian Leck, director of Township Law Enforcement Services. “Thanks to the entire department who worked with Neighborhood Watch volunteers to host National Night Out parties throughout The Woodlands, and The Woodlands Township Board of Directors for their support.” The Township thanks the many team members of Neighborhood Watch who contributed to this recognition. The Township also thanks its public safety partners: the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Constable’s Office - Precinct 4 and The Woodlands Fire Department. “These public safety partnerships are an essential
part of all Township crime and fire prevention programming throughout the year,” said Chairman of the Board Gordy Bunch. “We are thankful for our many public safety officials and first responders who help to keep The Woodlands safe.” The Township also collaborated on the State of Texas, which also took first place in its category. The Woodlands Township has been participating in National Night Out since 1990, and it has been producing awardwinning crime prevention programming since 1984. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods a safer, better place to live. National Night Out is designed to raise awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support for local anti-crime efforts and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood
Watch supports National Night Out by helping residents to host National Night Out parties, hosting the Community Safety Expo and a variety of public safety open houses, along with providing ongoing resources about safety for the community. For more information about The Woodlands Township, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov or call 281-210-3800.
For years, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) has provided educational programming about habitats for wildlife for large acreage landowners, local communities and individuals. The Township Board of Directors has resolved to support the creation and improvement of habitats for pollinators within the Township, beginning in 2018.
The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department has partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife to hold an educational event, Creating Habitats Workshop.
On Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents are invited to learn practical ways to create and maintain habitats for pollinators and other desirable wildlife such as birds. Practical methods to create and
maintain habitats in “common areas” and public spaces within the Township will be presented. Residents will be given the tools to extend the program into their own landscapes and information about habitat certification programs for homeowners.
On Saturday afternoon, concurrent in-depth workshops will cover writing a management plan to receive a Wildlife Tax Valuation on an owner’s property, or an alternate, hands-on field practice
session to learn how to monitor and collect data on pollinator species using existing data collection programs. Lunch is included for workshop participants. The location for this event is The Woodlands Emergency Training Center, 16135 IH 45 S, Conroe, TX 77385. To register for the free workshop, please visit the website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov / environment.

The Woodlands Township officially opened The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, November 10, 2017. This new facility is located at 6464 Creekside Forest Drive and will be operated Monday through Saturday throughout the year.
The programs offered at this new facility will include the traditional recreation programs found at the
Recreation Center at Bear Branch for youth and adult enrichment, camps and various activities, as well as outdoor programs that will take advantage of the campus that includes teepees, tree houses and a close proximity to the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. The Township Parks and Recreation staff will oversee the facility and its programs.
“We believe this new facility will be a great asset for all the residents of
The Woodlands to enjoy,” said Township Chairman of the Board Gordy Bunch. “This new recreation campus also adds to the great appeal of Rob Fleming Park and the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center as an ideal place for activities and events.”
The facility was purchased for $4.5 million, and an additional $500,000 has been spent for initial improvements of remodeling and campus renovation. Amenity additions of $900,000+ in 2018-2019 will include a dog park, playground, adventure course and field lights.
In addition to recreation programs, this facility will also be used as a satellite location for Harris County Constable Precinct 4 to schedule meetings and perform office work. Residents will also have the opportunity to pick up property improvement applications and register for Neighborhood Watch programs.

January and February are typically the coldest months of the year in The Woodlands. As the weather turns colder, many families will get outside to enjoy the winter weather together. But before doing so you should know the signs and symptoms of cold-related emergencies and how to provide basic care.
Although extremely cold environmental temperatures increase the risk for cold-related emergencies, these emergencies can also occur at more moderate environmental temperatures, too. Factors such as wind chill can increase a person’s risk for cold-related illnesses, as can age and general health. If someone is wet or sweaty (after a swim, a long run or some backyard football) - or if it is windy - they are more likely to suffer a cold-related emergency. Below are the two types of cold-related emergencies to keep in mind and some tips for treating these conditions.
HYPOTHERMIA occurs when a victim’s entire body cools because its ability to keep warm fails. Hypothermia is life threatening if care is not provided.
• Signs and symptoms: Uncontrollable shivering, numbness, glassy stare, apathy, weakness or impaired judgment and loss of consciousness.
• Care: To care for hypothermia, first CALL 9-1-1. If you can, gently move the victim to a warm place and remove any wet clothing. Warm the body gradually by wrapping them in blankets or putting dry clothing on the victim. Do not warm them up too quickly by, for example, submerging them in a hot bath. Be sure to cover the head since a significant amount of body heat is lost through the head. If the victim is conscious, have him or her drink liquids that are warm, but not hot, and do not contain alcohol or caffeine.
FROSTBITE occurs when specific body parts freeze from having been exposed to the cold. The severity of frostbite depends on factors such as air temperature, length of exposure and wind speed.
• Signs and symptoms: Frostbite can cause the loss of body extremities – the nose, fingers, hands, arms, toes, feet and/or legs. The signs and symptoms
of frostbite include a lack of feeling; swelling; skin that appears waxy, is cold or discolored.
• Care: First move the victim out of the cold immediately and CALL 9-1-1. If there is a chance that the affected area of the body might be exposed to the freezing elements again and re-freeze, or if you are close to (within 10 minutes) a medical facility, do not attempt to warm the area. But if safe, warm the affected area by soaking it in warm water until normal color returns and then loosely bandage the area with dry, sterile dressings.
Be sure to wear enough layers, including gloves, socks and a hat, and remember to protect those in your family that are most susceptible to these types of emergencies such as children and the elderly or infirm. We hope you can get outside and enjoy our parks and pathways this winter – but please be safe while doing so!
NOTE: Some of the information in this article was obtained through the American Red Cross Lifeguard Program.
The Woodlands Township’s Aquatics Division has begun hiring lifeguards, swim instructors and swim coaches for summer 2018. All interested applicants are encouraged to apply and train as soon as possible to ensure first choice of placement. With more than 400 seasonal positions available, the average teenager might assume that there will be a job waiting if they apply in May or June. Lifeguard Staff has approximately 350 positions available. Starting at $9.25/ hour for the village pools and starting at
$9.75/hour for the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center (higher training) with an end-ofseason completion bonuses of $0.75/hour in August and $2/hour in September.
Swim Instructors will start at $11.50/hour and Swim Coaches start at $9.50/hour. There are approximately 45 instructors and 12 coaches positions available. All positions are eligible for an increase of $.50/hour with each additional year of experience.
