KEEP THE WOODS IN THE WOODLANDS
By Kathie Herrick
Everyyear at this time since our community was founded, residents turn the mantra, “Keep the woods in The Woodlands,” into action! Thousands observe Arbor Day by attending the community celebration and planting trees in their own backyards. More recently, residents of all ages are joining the ranks of community stewards reforesting parks and open spaces.
The Woodlands Township is coordinating the annual community tree planting activities: one targeting a village and another focusing on a neighborhood. The tradition was first established in 2014 at Falconwing Park in Indian Springs, followed by Tamarac Park in Grogan’s Mill in 2015. Planting trees where they are needed most, a different village is identified each year for a reforestation project with the ultimate goal of rotating among each of the eight villages.
Community stewardship embodies The Woodlands spirit. Many echoed the words of a volunteer at last year’s event, “What a wonderful day we had! Our family thoroughly enjoyed being involved in such a great program. It was truly a blessing to see the community working together.”
Volunteers of all ages are invited to participate in the third annual Community Planting event on Saturday, February 18, 2017, in the Village of Creekside Park at Footbridge Park. We are also inviting nominations for the neighborhood planting site scheduled to occur in early March. To nominate a location near your neighborhood, please email kherrick@thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov. Write ARBOR DAY SITE in the subject line, indicate a physical address or nearest intersection and include photos of the area in need of reforestation.
Volunteers of all ages are invited to plant trees at Footbridge Park, Saturday, February 18, 2017. To find out how you can help keep the woods in The Woodlands, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/volunteer.
Priority will be given to neighborhoods other than one in Creekside Park Village, where this year’s community planting will take place. Residents contributing hours to the village tree planting will also receive priority for their neighborhood.
You can help keep the woods in The Woodlands! See www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ volunteer to sign up for the village tree planting. Please visit www. thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ environment for more details.
Mark your calendar for this spring’s stewardship opportunity — Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

NEED A NEW CHALLENGE? VOLUNTEER
Run for a Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association Office
Eachyear, elections are held for more than 100 volunteer leadership positions within the community. Volunteers are critical to The Woodlands as thousands of volunteer hours are necessary to carry out the governance of our community. As in the past, elections will continue to be held in February for the Residential Design Review Committees (RDRCs) and the Village Associations. The Woodlands Township Board of Directors election is held in November and follows a different process.
Residential Design Review Committees
The majority of properties in The Woodlands Township are encumbered with either The Woodlands Community Association Covenants or The Woodlands Association Covenants (both herein referred to as the Covenants). In 2010, these community associations transferred responsibility for Covenant administration to the Township as part of the governance transition, and the Covenants continue to be encumbered on properties throughout The Woodlands. As prescribed by the Covenants, fivemember resident-elected committees serve to facilitate property improvements of their peers in each village. Elected to one-year terms, residents dedicate several hours each month to review the applications submitted by their neighbors for improvements to their properties. Residents interested in ensuring that design standards are maintained in The Woodlands may be interested in filing for Residential Design Review Committee candidacy in their village.
The following Residential Design Review Committee positions are up for election in February 2017:
All Villages
• Up to five Residential Design Review Committee members to be elected for each village, all serving one-year terms. This includes two committees for the village of Indian Springs, which is divided into two geographic areas based on Covenant imposition.
Village Associations
Each of the villages has a civic association that facilitates activities specific to their village. Each village will have officer positions and/or area (neighborhood) representative positions open for the 2017 election. While officer duties may vary by position and/or specific village (refer to each village’s bylaws at www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov), all villages seek enthusiastic residents looking to volunteer their service and leadership for their closest Woodlands neighbors.
The following Village Association positions are up for election in February 2017:
Alden Bridge Village Association
• 10 At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association
• 18 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
College Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
Creekside Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Events Chair (one-year term)
• 11 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)
Grogan’s Mill Village Association
• Seven At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Indian Springs Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Panther Creek Village Association
• Vice President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)
Sterling Ridge Village Association
• Eight At-Large Village Directors (two-year term)
Filing for Office
Filing packets and volunteerrelated information can be found on The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, at Residential Design Review Committee meetings and through the Village Association presidents. Filing for all community positions begins Thursday, December 29, 2016, and continues through January 19, 2017, at 5 p.m.
In accordance with the current election procedures, candidates who are interested in running, but do not file by the deadline will be able to run as a writein candidate only if they file as such by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.
Cancellation of Uncontested Elections
In the February 2017 election, for any Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association that does not have a contested race as of 5 p.m. on January 25, 2017, the entity’s election will be canceled and the seating and/or filling of vacancies will proceed in accordance with the entity’s bylaws.

Alden Bridge
Happy New Year from Alden Bridge! We appreciate all the hard work of the residents who made our village a beautiful sight with their festively decorated homes and yards. We had a very hard time selecting our winners for the Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest.
We’ll have our first 2017 village association board/residents meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, 7 p.m., at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Please consider attending our meetings this year; we appreciate resident comments, both positive and negative, and will try to assist you with any areas of concern. We receive reports from the Sheriff’s Department and the Township board, so the meetings are a good source of information on what’s going on in our village and The Woodlands as a whole. To top it all off, we often have very interesting speakers, such as our superintendent of schools, county judge and commissioners, heads of various Township departments, Economic Development Partnership and the Chamber. Watch our Facebook page for more information.
We have village elections coming up in February, and your vote is very important. This year, Alden Bridge is electing nine at-large area representatives and five members of our Residential Design Review Committee. You can learn more about the upcoming election on the Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov Filing ends this month. Have you ever considered running for a position on our board? Think about it.
As usual, we have many activities planned this year for Alden Bridge residents! We’ll be cheering on runners in The Woodlands Marathon, the annual Spring Festival is scheduled for the Saturday before Easter, and our scholarship competition comes up in the
NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS
spring along with the Yard of the Month program that runs through summer and precedes Halloween’s Spookiest House contest. We’ll participate in the Fourth of July Parade, the semi-annual village flea markets, and we take a bus full of residents to our annual Astros baseball game outing. You’ll find information about our activities on our website, www.aldenbridge.org, our Facebook page, and by subscribing to our monthly newsletter (Please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org.).
We’ll need volunteers for many of these activities, so please contact us to sign up. It’s rewarding and fun!
If you can’t attend our meeting, then please contact us by email at info@aldenbridge.org or through our website, www.aldenbridge.org, if you have any questions or concerns about life in our village. We’re always here for you. We’re looking forward to meeting residents and being of assistance throughout the year!

Larry was instrumental in keeping the tradition of The Woodlands Flea Market alive. He will be missed.
The 2016 Halloween Spooktacular was attended by over 200 children and their parents. Our board members are grateful for the volunteerism of College Park High School students from the JROTC and the Ambassador clubs. We had over 20 students who helped at the event. In addition, we appreciate the support from the College Park Chick-
fil-A and the Conroe Costco. We welcome the support of our area businesses.
Filing has begun for positions on the College Park Village Association Board of Directors. Each year we elect nine area representatives, and in alternating years we elect two of four officer positions. Officers must have previous experience on the board. Do you have an interest in serving your community? The events that we support are all family-oriented and fun! Please give thoughtful consideration to serving.
Are you conserving water? Have you turned off your sprinklers now that the grass is dormant? Join your neighbors who have pledged to turn off our sprinklers from October 15, 2016, until April 15, 2017. By participating in the Water-wise Village Challenge, you earn points for College Park. Cash awards are given to each village based on points. These funds are used to provide college scholarships for students who reside in one of our neighborhoods and help support other activities that you may enjoy free of charge this the year, such as the Spooktacular in October and the Poolooza in May! Plus, you will greatly save on your water bill.

Coffeeshop Company, Twin Liquors, and Refuge Bar and Bistro. The end of 2017 is when we look forward to the completion and opening of the second Kuykendahl Road bridge, if all goes according to schedule. In addition to alleviating traffic on Kuykendahl Road for Creekside Park residents, lighting and a pedestrian/ bike path, which will connect our village with the rest of The Woodlands, are some of the added benefits of the bridge.
Mark your calendars for January 14, 2017, from 1 and 4 p.m., to attend this year’s annual Creekside Park Village Winter Festival and Chili Cook-off at the Rob Fleming Park! This year’s festival, hosted by your village board members, will include food and activities for the kids, including a snow hill for sledding for kids of all ages, and of course, the main event: the tasting of some awesome chili by local cooks. No need to bring your wallet, just grab a friend and neighbor and come on by to sample some fantastic chili and vote for your favorite! Visit with vendor sponsors and enjoy yourself!
Your village association attends many fundraising charitable events in The Woodlands throughout the year, and we look forward to having volunteers from our community attend these events with us. Let’s make a difference together. Like us on our Facebook page and attend your monthly meetings to get news on upcoming opportunities to give back to this great community we live in. We attend these events to raise awareness of our great village and our commitment to be a supporting partner of The Woodlands community and all it has to offer. Our education fund is a part of why we attend these events; we look forward to participation from our area schools at these events for added dollars to be distributed to your school for much needed supplies. We always look forward
to seeing new faces at the meetings held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Lone Star College at Creekside Park at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Happy New Year to all, and we look forward to seeing you around the village!

Grogan’s Mill
The Fall Yard of the Month was awarded to Idalia Rodriguez and Nader Yekanizaree of the Elm Branch subdivision. The couple and their three children have lived in The Woodlands for 16 years. Idalia, pictured, is the gardener and plants flowers every season for color and texture.
The fall garden features chrysanthemums and sweet potato ivy. In the spring and summer, the garden is alive with color from azaleas, impatiens, petunias and hibiscus. This yard was nominated by a resident who admired their yard throughout the year.
With winter here, there is always something new at the farmer’s market, every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, at the Grogan’s Mill Shopping Center at South Millbend and Grogan’s Mill. There are over 40 active vendors selling fresh vegetables, meats, seafood from the Gulf, coffee, breads, honey, salad dressings, gifts, Mexican foods, and much more — all locally produced or packaged. Panther Creek
2017 presents the residents of Panther Creek with many opportunities to participate in keeping The Woodlands a real hometown. Our village association exists to help residents enjoy and benefit from the many resources in our community. This will be a busy year in the village with elections, flea markets, baseball outings, picnics, parades, holiday lighting and decorating contests, scholarship awards, guest speakers, bazaars and much more. Come join us and help enrich The Woodlands and also enrich your life by being an active member of this great community. All residents are invited to attend. Many of your neighbors attended our meetings,
and after seeing what fun we have and what good we do, have joined the board as area representatives. These include Gene Lochridge, Dick Franks, Stephanie Zertucle, William Tunal, Kevin Currey, Synda Wilson, Randy Kruchten and Walter Lisiewski.
A very special thanks goes to Larry Faith who served as village association president from 2002 to 2008 and has headed up every Woodlands Flea Market since 2002. Recently, he and his wife Virginia moved to Houston. It will take several members to try to replace all that Larry has done for Panther Creek and the entire Woodlands community. We would be blessed if he continues to check in on us from time to time.
Our monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m., the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building, located at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. (just off New Trails). Community leaders and civic groups present useful information and make themselves available for your questions and suggestions. Sheriff’s Department
Deputies present detailed reports of crime prevention and criminal activities in our neighborhood. Our program specialist from the international award-winning Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services Department keeps us informed of the wide range of upcoming events taking place in our village and also keeps us up to date on the actions and issues before The Woodlands Township Board. Our board members also report on their work at community-wide committees on residential design review, local policing, and parks and recreation.
Congratulations to the winners in The Woodlands Township Board election last November. Well over 30,000 residents turned out to vote. Remember that your village association is a convenient and more informal forum to get neighborhood issues addressed. You can keep informed by visiting www.PantherCreekVillageAssociation.org, Facebook.com/PantherCreekVillage or twitter.com/PantherCreekTX.

Recycle Kitchen Scraps and Yard Waste Into
Handmade Compost
By Ann Hall
Collect kitchen scraps, green yard trimmings and brown yard waste (such as fallen leaves) to create your own rich compost for use in planting beds, the garden and container plantings. Start 2017 by participating in a free community composting class presented by The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at their facility located at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive. In one hour, you will learn how to collect kitchen and yard waste, create a composting system, and make your own nutrient-rich compost to enhance your soil and plants.
Using hands-on demonstrations and educational strategies, Montgomery County Master Gardeners will share their knowledge to support your journey from a bucket of kitchen scraps to a bin of finished, ready-to-use compost. Learn about the ingredients needed for creating compost. Try out a variety of composting tools. Explore the technique for composting. Meet other like-minded residents, and make new friends! A complimentary kitchen scrap bucket will be offered to each class participant. High-quality folding wire mesh compost bins will be for sale at a reduced price. Door prizes, including a compost bin, are raffled off at each class. Join us at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017!

winter, consider taking the Water-Wise Village Challenge to pledge to turn off your automated sprinkler system until April 15, 2017. You can find information and the pledge at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/waterconservation and sign up! You can earn contest points for your village to receive cash for its scholarship fund from our program sponsors. A great gift for yourself is available for encouraging your neighbors to sign up, too.
Today’s informed citizens know that native plants in the landscape require less water and fewer chemicals to stay healthy. Another advantage, less well known, is that they provide food and shelter for lots of birds, butterflies and other desirable wildlife. Even a little space, when dedicated to providing habitat for our favorite wildlife, can help. Typically, we have thought of our landscaped yards as dependent on green turf grass year-round to look good, but:
• The Woodlands Township Covenants require that a maximum of 60 percent of your front yard can be turf grass (such as St. Augustine), making room for native plantings to be the other 40 percent or more.
• Turning off your irrigation/sprinkler system until April 15, 2017, and allowing your turf grass to go brown not only promotes healthy grass, but is within Covenants standards.
• Brown grass, just as leafless trees, can be a beautiful color in fall and winter, and shows your awareness of the need to conserve water — our most precious resource. By allowing turf grass to brown in the winter, you will save water and money.
Groundcovers such as Pigeonberry are great to reduce the need for watering and maintenance.

ENVISION SPRiNG AT GARDENING 101
Thinking spring? Winter, when lawns and plants are dormant, is the best time to envision a greener landscape! Whether rejuvenating a stressed landscape, selecting plants or starting a new garden project, novice and seasoned gardeners alike will gain valuable tips and knowledge, Saturday, January 14, 2017, from 9 a.m. to noon, during the free Gardening 101 seminar, Living Landscapes: Microbes to Pollinators.
The life in our landscapes, from the microbes in soil to pollinators visiting plants, defines its health. Gardening experts Scott Snodgrass with The Edible Group and Diana Foss with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, team up to provide a guide for increasing soil fertility and adding life to landscapes.
Leading a fascinating and visual journey into the world of soil microbiology, Mr. Snodgrass presents Life in the Soil: A Hidden World. Unseen, this microscopic world actually keeps plants and humans healthy. Passionate about edible landscaping, Mr. Snodgrass shares how to get lawns, ornamental landscapes and edible gardens healthy the sustainable way by supporting natural biological cycles in soil. These processes,
he explains, lead to beautiful lawns and landscapes as well as improved oxygen and water cycles.
Creating dynamic gardens, or living landscapes, is both aesthetically pleasing and a trend that can benefit declining populations of bumble bees, honey bees, butterflies and other insect pollinators. According to Ms. Foss, urban wildlife biologist, habitat for pollinators is a critical need. Many vibrant and interesting native plants also happen to

be excellent habitat plants for precious pollinators. Discover the allure and value of pollinators when Ms. Foss presents Gardening for Pollinators.
Gardening 101 is held at the Township's Parks, Recreation and Environmental Services Facility, located at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive. Space is limited. Please register online at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ gardeningevents. For more information, please call 281-210-3800.
Natural biological cycles in soil help to create vibrant gardens for edibles. Dynamic gardens are not only aesthetically pleasing, but help to benefit declining populations of bees and other insect pollinators.

Understanding Our Water Needs
The new 2017 State Water Plan for Texas has been released to the public. Some key points residents of The Woodlands Township may want to know are:
How much water is available for our use?
Will the amount of water change over the next few years?
How does projected population growth track with water availability?
How will our community compare to others for demand?
In short, we are in good shape for water needs right now in The Woodlands. The addition of surface water to our water supply (Lake Conroe water now accounts for 30 percent of our drinking water) did increase rates, but it also critically reduced the stress on our aquifers. Across the state and nation, all utility costs are rapidly rising, except for natural gas. Our residents will not be exempt from pricing increases for water in both the short and long term. However, compared to other cities and municipalities of our size, our cost for water is still a bargain.
Our region’s population is projected to grow at a rate far exceeding the national average. By far, the cheapest way to supply water for our expanding population is to conserve it. New water wells and delivery infrastructure are expensive and will be funded through significantly higher water bills for you and me. Let’s take the smart, easy and cheap route, and start conserving now! The Woodlands Township is in Region H of Texas. Our regional water plan was released in 2016 and provides much of the information about our current water use and future needs.

OnceMAKE A PLAN
Disasters change things. When an emergency happens, you may have to decide what to do very quickly while you are worrying about what might happen. By planning ahead, it will be easier to make the right decisions.
you know which disasters could happen in your community, there are things you can do to lower your risk of injury or property damage. Here are some suggestions:
HURRICANE
Consider installing hurricane shutters. Keep trees around your house trimmed to prevent damage from falling branches. Secure your soffits to make
sure that they won’t provide a way for wind and water to get into your home. Make sure entryway doors have three hinges and a deadbolt lock.
FLOOD
Elevate your home above the base flood level or take steps to floodproof. Elevate your utilities above the base flood level. Make sure you have adequate flood venting. Use flood-resistant building materials when you build or remodel. Taking steps like these can lower your flood insurance rates — contact your insurance agent to make sure you have adequate flood insurance. It is usually not part of homeowners insurance.
WILDFIRE
Use fire-resistant building materials like shingles and siding. Cut back branches and brush. Keep firewood at least 30 feet away. Check into the
www.facebook.com/TheWoodlandsCERT
National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise program for more ideas.
TORNADO
Consider adding a tornado-safe room to your home, or add extra protection to an existing room to keep your family safe in a tornado. Look for FEMA publication 320 for more information. Be sure to check with The Woodlands Township Covenant Administration Department before construction begins.
Planning ahead will make you feel more secure if a disaster should happen. With any luck, you will not need to be concerned with any of these in 2017.
