Winter

LAWN WEEDS

While winter-dormant St. Augustine lawns have yellowed, something is going on under the soil.

WinterNutsedge

Plantain weed

weeds are beginning to germinate. And a lot of weeds do well here. Plantain weed, nutsedge, henbit, spurge, purslane, chickweed and thistle are a few of the unwanted guests that plague our lawns in late winter and early spring. Don’t despair. St. Augustine is the best weed-suppressing grass there is, followed only by Zoysia. Both are aggressive plants and, if properly maintained, will keep the weeds to a minimum, if not entirely eliminate them. Weeds do like compacted, poorlydrained soil, bereft of available minerals, nutrients and organisms. Residents who apply organic matter to lawns in mid-fall and mid-spring have already established a strong defense against weeds. And although these are ideal times to spread organic matter, anytime is OK. Aerating the lawn before adding organic matter is another step in the weed war. The organic matter helps soil to drain, and simultaneously holds enough water to establish a strong root system, and is the first and most important step in having a beautiful lawn.

Winter weeds start poking their heads up when the first string of warm days come in January or February. The best method to get rid of them is to simply pull them up and dispose of them in your green waste. Mowing them down before they seed also gets rid of them, but a grass catcher is necessary to keep the weeds from falling back onto the ground. But

weeds are ornery and persistent. Even in the most well-cared-for lawn, it’s probable that a few plantains and thistles are going to pop up. While manufactured herbicides may not be the best choice, there are a few products available to the environmentallyconscious homeowner.

Agricultural vinegar is available at many garden stores. It is tried and tested and will destroy even the most persistent weeds. It even works on that super weed – nutsedge. Just be careful. Agricultural vinegar is much stronger than the normal white vinegar that most people keep in their kitchens. Wear gloves (preferably rubber gloves) when applying. One application of agricultural vinegar eliminated a sizeable stand of nutsedge growing in the Alden Bridge Community Garden recently. Ammoniated soap of fatty acid or potassium soap of fatty acid are also effective herbicidal treatments for weeds, though more effective on plantain, wood sorrel and spurge. Whether using vinegar or soap of fatty acid, it’s not necessary to spray a whole area. Simply spot spray each weed. A spray bottle works well. While corn gluten has been touted as a great pre-emergent herbicide, there seems to be some disagreement as to its ability to suppress weeds. It’s also extremely expensive.

Whatever method residents use, creating a healthy lawn is an ongoing process, not an isolated event. For more information, please visit www.wjpa.net.

BEWARE THE ATTACK OF

Still Looking for a New Year’s Resolution?

HOW ABOUT VOLUNTEERING!

Run for a Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association Office

Each year, elections are held for more than 100 volunteer leadership positions within The Woodlands. Volunteers are critical to The Woodlands; thousands of volunteer hours are necessary to carry out the governance of our community. As in the past, elections will continue to be held in February for the Residential Design Review Committees (RDRCs) and the village associations. The Woodlands Township Board of Directors election is held in November and follows a different process.

Residential Design Review Committees

The majority of properties in The Woodlands Township are encumbered with either The Woodlands Community Association Covenants or The Woodlands Association Covenants (both herein referred to as the Covenants). In 2010, these community associations transferred responsibility for Covenant administration to the Township as part of the governance transition, and the Covenants continue to be encumbered on property throughout The Woodlands. As prescribed by the Covenants, five-member resident-elected committees serve to facilitate property improvements of their peers. Elected to one-year terms, residents dedicate several hours each month to review the applications submitted by their neighbors for improvements to their property. Residents interested in ensuring that design standards are maintained in The Woodlands may be interested in filing for Residential Design Review Committee candidacy in their village.

The following Residential Design Review Committee positions are up for election in February 2016:

All Villages

• Up to five Residential Design Review Committee members to be elected for each village, all serving one-year terms. This includes two committees for villages such as Indian Springs and Grogan’s Mill, which are divided into two geographic areas based on Covenant imposition.

Village Associations

Each of the villages has a civic association that facilitates activities specific to their village. Each village will have officer positions and/or area (neighborhood) representative positions open for the 2016 election. While officer duties may vary by position and/or specific village (refer to each village’s bylaws at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov), all villages seek enthusiastic residents looking to volunteer their service and leadership for their closest Woodlands neighbors.

The following village association positions are up for election in February 2016:

Alden Bridge Village Association

• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)

Cochran’s Crossing Village Association

• 18 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)

College Park Village Association

• Vice President (two-year term)

• Treasurer (two-year term)

• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)

Creekside Park Village Association

• Vice President (two-year term)

• Treasurer (two-year term)

• Events Chair (one-year term)

• 10 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year term)

Grogan’s Mill Village Association

• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)

Indian Springs Village Association

• Vice President (two-year term)

• Treasurer (two-year term)

• Seven At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)

Panther Creek Village Association

• President (two-year term)

• Treasurer (two-year term)

• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year term)

Sterling Ridge Village Association

• Seven At-Large Village Directors (two-year term)

Filing for Office

Filing packets and related information can be found on The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, at Residential Design Review Committee meetings and through the village association presidents. Filing for all community positions begins December 31, 2015, and continues through January 21, 2016, at 5 p.m. In accordance with the current election procedures, candidates who are interested in running, but do not file by the deadline will be able to run as a write-in candidate only if they file as such by 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2016.

Cancellation of Uncontested Elections

In the February 2016 election, for any Residential Design Review Committee or village association that does not have a contested race as of 5 p.m. on January 27, 2016, the entity’s election will be canceled and the seating and/or filling of vacancies will proceed in accordance with the entity’s bylaws.

A“BERRY”GOODYEAR!

Theseason’s abundance of red-berried trees can prolong our holiday spirit well into February if the migrating cedar waxwings don’t feast on these treats first. Botanically speaking, not all of the small red fruits are berries, but between the hollies and the hawthorns, there is always plenty to go around.

The parsley hawthorn (Crataegus marshallii) is a tree with year-round appeal. The trees are especially conspicuous now with their fruit-laden branches. It is no mystery why we selected parsley hawthorn to launch our Keeping the Woods in The Woodlands campaign 15 years ago.

As we observe Arbor Day this month, it bears remembering that many of our favorite trees may be fragile saplings in the natural areas of our yards, not yet mature enough to exhibit their spectacular traits. Become familiar with your landscape’s potential by checking out Carmine Stahl’s and Ria McElvaney’s Trees of Texas: An Easy Guide to Leaf Identification. If your landscape is not naturally nurturing young trees, start the year by selecting several native species to reforest. For additional suggestions, please call 281-210-3800 to request copies of the Plant Focus brochures highlighting native tree species: Spring Flowering Trees, Trees for Fall Color, Evergreens and Colorful Fruits and Seeds.

Make a Resolution for a Safe Home and Neighborhood

As we begin 2016, it is time to reflect on our resolutions for the New Year. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch encourages you to include a safe home and neighborhood in your plans. Crime prevention is a group effort and requires all of us to take a proactive role in our safety. Knowing how to protect yourself and your property, and joining with your neighbors to make your neighborhood safer, can reduce the opportunity for crime in The Woodlands.

One of the most basic crime prevention techniques includes the Crime Triangle which identifies three elements that must be present in order for crime to occur:

1) Desire of a criminal to commit a crime; 2) Ability to commit the crime; and the 3) Opportunity for the crime to be committed. Fortunately, you have control over one of the elements of the Crime Triangle – Opportunity. By removing the opportunity, you can break the Crime Triangle and contribute to the community policing effort in The Woodlands. By following these rules, you can take away the criminal’s most valuable resource: opportunity.

2016 HOLIDAY COLLECTION SCHEDULE

The following holidays are the only ones that will change your solid waste service day in 2016.

New Year’s Day ...............................

January 1, 2016 Thanksgiving Day ...................

November 24, 2016

There will be no service on these holidays. No other holidays will impact trash service. Service resumes on the day following the holiday. When a holiday falls on Monday through Friday, all subsequent service for the week is delayed by one day. Friday service will occur on Saturday. Regular solid waste services resume the following week.

PLEASE REMEMBER

The Woodlands Covenants require that trash and recycling carts must be stored out of public view. Leaving trash carts out longer than necessary detracts from the curb appeal of neighborhoods and becomes an eyesore. Trash and recycling receptacles may be placed at the curb on the day prior to trash pickup and should be removed from the curb by the end of the day of trash pickup.

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS

Alden Bridge

Happy New Year from Alden Bridge! Thanks to all who decorated your homes so beautifully this festive season – it was very hard to choose winners of the Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest!

The first 2016 village association board/residents’ meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., and residents are encouraged to join us. This month’s guest speaker will be Gordy Bunch, Chairman of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau. We’re looking forward to hearing Gordy’s thoughts on the CVB’s plans for 2016 and beyond.

You know the old adage that the more you give, the move you receive. Get more out of living in The Woodlands by becoming more involved in your village this year. Attend our board meetings, volunteer for village events, perhaps even run for a position on our village association board. We’d welcome your participation. We’ll elect nine at-large Area Representatives and five members of our Residential Design Review Committee in February. You can learn more about the upcoming election on the Township website, and filing ends this month.

We have a lot planned this year for Alden Bridge residents. We’re already planning our largest event, the annual Spring Festival on the Saturday before Easter. We’ll award scholarships to Alden Bridge students and prizes to winners of our Yard of the Month and Halloween’s Spookiest House contests. Cochran’s Crossing

January is a time to look back at the year just ended, and for the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association it has been a busy and successful year. Some of our activities have been highlighted in previous issues of the magazine. They have included support of communitywide events such as the Fourth of July Parade and National Night Out, which are organized by the Township. We have led and organized our own events such as the Fall Festival.

In addition, the board meetings have provided a forum for discussion and

policy development for a wide variety of topics that affect not only residents of Cochran’s Crossing, but The Woodlands as a whole. Among these have been bond issues, infrastructure and transportation plans, concerns with the condition of individual residences, crime and prevention reports, National Night Out, neighborhood watches and introduction of new businesses.

January is also a time to look ahead. In that regard, the board not only plans to continue the past activities, but also add to and improve them in the coming year. The board’s ability to do this will depend on some members that have been on the board for a number of years and some that are new within the past year. A good example is former board member Clarence (C.W.) Wallace, who moved from The Woodlands recently after serving on the Cochran’s Crossing board for 14 years and 33 years as a volunteer in The Woodlands.

There are opportunities for other Cochran’s Crossing residents who are interested in learning, communicating and participating. There will most likely

College Park

We welcomed new board member Joel Barnes at our November meeting. Joel and his family reside in Harper’s Landing. Remember that all village association elections will be held in February for any contested seats. College Park Village will be filling seats for nine at-large directors plus treasurer and vice president. For more information on filing, please access the Township website.

Whether or not you decide to become a board member, there are opportunities to join College Park in some of the many community-wide events. Upcoming is the Earth Day GreenUp in March. Volunteers throughout the community will be contributing to cleanup efforts in targeted locations around our community. This is an event for the entire family to join in and have a lasting impact both personally and for humanity.

High school seniors who live in the village of College Park are eligible to apply for one of the college scholarships to be awarded this spring. In addition to living in one for the three village areas of Harper’s Landing, Windsor Hills or Grogan’s Forest, applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in community service.

College Park Village would like to publicly thank the College Park High School students from the Ambassadors, the ROTC and Interact clubs who

volunteered at our annual Fall Festival. They demonstrated a willingness to serve and made all the difference in the success of our event. Thank you!

Creekside Park

Greetings, Creekside Park residents, and Happy New Year! What an amazing year we had last year. Creekside Park saw lots of growth with more families joining our wonderful village and new business openings supporting the needs of our community. The area continues to grow and flourish into a safe and friendly place to live and raise a family.

The members of the Creekside Park Village Association board would like to remind you that all residents are invited to attend the Seventh Annual Chili Cook-Off. Mark your calendars for January 16 to be at the Rob Fleming Park in the village of Creekside Park, between 1 and 4 p.m. to attend this great event. This year’s festival, hosted by your board members, will include free food and activities for the kids, including a snow hill for sledding, and of course the main event, the tasting of some awesome chili by local cooks.

We all vow to make resolutions for the New Year. Whether you have committed to better health and fitness or making a difference in the community, Creekside Park Village is the place to be. With miles of pathways, parks, pools and fitness facilities, a healthier lifestyle is just steps away. If your passion is to make a difference and give back to the community, the Creekside Park Village Association is the place to look. The village association attends many charitable events in The Woodlands throughout the year and looks forward to having many volunteers from our community attend these events. Let’s make a difference together. Attend

Grogan’s Mill

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association-sponsored “Aging in Place” project is moving forward with several other Woodlands villages participating with us in development and exploratory funding. Aging in Place is a community program designed to help older people maintain their independence, remain active, retain self-determination and keep social connections. A hundred local residents have been surveyed, and their responses are helping to determine the types of services that may be offered. A website will be activated shortly to enable better communications. If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact us at aiptwtx@gmail.com.

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association has recently been contacted by several residents who have reported covenant violations that they feel are not being corrected in a timely manner. To facilitate a better understanding of the covenant compliance process, Grogan’s Mill Village Association hosted a special meeting in early December to address the issues with a panel composed of Township officials from Covenant Administration, the Development and Standards Committee and the Sheriff’s Department. Residents attended to share their concerns and learn of options that are, and are not, available to help them address these problems. Please contact president@gmva.org if you see what you feel are covenant violations within your neighborhood, and we will direct your message to the correct people to assist you.

The Woodlands Township has selected Tamarac Park as its first annual regional park reforestation project. Vines were removed last fall, and many of the existing trees are dead and in need of replacement. The trees to be planted will range from seedlings up to 30 gallons. The project was still in the planning stages, but tentatively the replanting will take place on a Saturday morning either the last weekend of January or the first weekend in February. Many volunteers will be needed to make this project a success, so please contact us at president@gmva.org if you and your family and neighbors would like to assist.

Grogan’s Mill has been receiving a mixture of water from aquifers and Lake Conroe for several months now. Have you noticed a difference? The San Jacinto River Authority has received no complaints about a change in taste or decline in water quality.

After taking our traditional oneSaturday break over the holidays, the Farmer’s Market is again back in action, with over 40 active vendors selling fresh vegetables, meats, seafood from the Gulf, coffee, breads, honey, salad dressings, gifts, Mexican foods, and much more –all locally produced or packaged. Stop by

and see us at the Grogan’s Mill Shopping Center at South Millbend and Grogan’s Mill every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon. Check out the vendors scheduled to set up by visiting our website at www.grogansmillvillage.com. You can also sign up for our weekly e-blast of what’s coming each Saturday. Don’t forget to vote for candidates to the Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board and M.U.D. Boards in February. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain about not being represented.

Panther Creek

The New Year presents the residents of Panther Creek with many opportunities to participate in keeping The Woodlands a “real hometown.”

Your Panther Creek Village Association exists to help residents enjoy and benefit from the many resources in our community. 2016 will be a busy year in the Panther Creek village with elections, flea markets, baseball outings, picnics, parades, Christmas lighting contests, scholarship awards, guest speakers, bazaars and much more going on. Come join us and help enrich The Woodlands and your life by being an active member of this great community.

Our monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m., the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building on Technology Forest Boulevard (just off New Trails). All residents are invited to attend. Community leaders and civic groups present useful information and make themselves available for your questions and suggestions. Sheriff’s

Department Deputies present detailed reports of crime prevention and criminal activities in our neighborhood. Our Program Specialist from the international award-winning Neighborhood Services Department of the Township keeps us informed of the wide range of events taking place in our village and on the actions and issues before The Woodlands Township Board. Our board members also report on their work at communitywide committees on residential design review, local policing, and parks and recreation. We just wrapped up two of our biggest events of the year — the annual Holiday Lighting Contest in December and our annual BBQ Challenge and Kids Fest in October. Check back next month to find out which home and neighborhood took top honors in the lighting contest. We thank everybody for participating.

The BBQ Challenge and Kids Fest was a big success with some 1,500 in attendance. Top honors went to the crew from Degas Park, which won first place for beans and pulled pork with head pit master Jeff Young, and took the President’s Award for overall good food and best booth. Young and Todd Zorros accepted the honors on behalf of their team.

Also taking home first place honors were Frontera, with head pit master Steve Parkin, for brisket and Beckonvale, with head pit master Matt Sawyer, for ribs.

The event couldn’t have been held without our sponsors, including Platinum sponsor Patrick Graham of State Farm, Gold sponsor Kroger, and bronze sponsors The Woodlands Development Company and Ivan Arojona of RE/MAX The Woodlands and Spring.

Special shout-out to our local fire department for participating in the BBQ Challenge. Finally, we want to thank Sue Young of the Sterling Village Association board for another incredible job of coordinating the BBQ Challenge.

THE WOODLANDS ANNUAL Arbor Day

Mark your calendars for the annual Arbor Day Celebration in The Woodlands on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the awardwinning Rob Fleming Park in the Village of Creekside Park. The annual celebration is sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation®, The Woodlands Township and The Brickman Group, Ltd.

Since 1977, The Woodlands Development Company and its sponsors have given away over 1.32 million tree seedlings at Arbor Day. For the fourth year, The Woodlands Township will donate an additional 91,000 tree seedlings

celebration

to be distributed at the event to enhance the forested setting of The Woodlands. This brings the total number of tree seedlings to be handed out to 121,000.

“We are excited to once again continue the tradition of distributing free tree seedlings to enhance the forested community in The Woodlands,” said Tim Welbes, Co-President of The Woodlands Development Company. “We are grateful to all of the sponsors who make this a wonderful event for our hometown. We invite residents of the community and guests to come out and enjoy the Arbor Day festivities and receive new tree seedlings.”

The selection of trees includes Bald Cypress, Eastern Redbud, Loblolly Pine,

Nuttall Oak, Overcup Oak, River Birch and Water Oak. In addition to receiving free tree seedlings, guests may register at the event to win one of five, seven-gallon native trees. Drawings will be hourly. Winners must be present.

“The Woodlands Township is proud to be a part of this popular tradition of Arbor Day. The trees given away help long-lasting efforts to add thousands of trees in residential yards, roadways, commercial properties, parks and open spaces. The trees highlight the natural beauty of The Woodlands,” said The Woodlands Township Chairman Ed Robb.

Residents are encouraged to collect their free tree seedlings at the Arbor Day celebration and plant them on their property, in community open space reserves and in forest preserves.

Lovable mascot of The Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone®, will also celebrate his birthday, beginning at 1 p.m. with free birthday cupcakes and a visit with his mascot friends, including Bridgeland Bill from The Woodlands’ sister community, Bridgeland. Bridgeland is also a whollyowned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation. There will be free giant inflatable rides and rock walls, a petting zoo, face painting and musical entertainment. Concessions will also be sold at the event.

MAKE A PLAN

Disasters change things. When an emergency happens, you may have to decide what to do very quickly while you are worrying about what might happen. By planning ahead, it will be easier to make the right decisions.

Onceyou know which disasters could happen in your community, there are things you can do to lower your risk of injury or property damage. Here are some things to think about:

TORNADO

Add a tornado-safe room to your home, or add extra protection to an existing room to keep your family safe in a tornado. Look for FEMA publication 320 for more information. Be sure to check with The Woodlands Township Covenant Administration Department before construction begins.

HURRICANE

Consider installing hurricane shutters. Keep trees around your house trimmed to prevent damage from falling branches. Secure your soffits to make sure that they won’t provide a way for

wind and water to get into your home. Make sure entryway doors have three hinges and a deadbolt lock.

WILDFIRE

Use fire-resistant building materials like shingles and siding. Cut back branches and brush. Keep firewood at least 30 feet away. Check into the National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise program for more ideas.

FLOOD

Elevate your home above the base flood level or take steps to floodproof. Elevate your utilities above the base flood level. Make sure you have adequate flood venting. Use flood-resistant building materials when you build or remodel. Taking steps like these can lower your flood insurance rates—contact your insurance agent to make sure you have

adequate flood insurance. It is usually not part of homeowners insurance.

EARTHQUAKE

Secure your furniture, appliances, and water heater to walls and floors. Install safety catches on cabinets and cupboard doors. Make sure your appliances are connected with flexible connections. Consider using a safety film on your windows or installing laminated glass to prevent injuries from broken glass.

Planning ahead will make you feel more secure if a disaster should happen. With any luck, you will not need to be concerned with any of these in 2016. For more information on any of these projects, or other things you can do to protect your home and family, please contact your local sheriff’s department or emergency management office, or visit www.twcert.com

Forest Management in The Woodlands Area

Loss and fragmentation of the forest is an ongoing concern for residents of The Woodlands. On Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 7 p.m., the Going Green Sustainability Lecture presents Forest Management in The Woodlands Area with John Warner, Urban District Forester with Texas A&M Forest Service, at the South Regional Library, 2101 Lake Robbins Dr., The Woodlands, TX 77380.

As Montgomery County has grown and changed over the years, land development has generated concern for the viability of the forest. During the

program, attendees will participate in a big picture discussion about the issues at hand, and brainstorm specific steps that can be taken to preserve and restore as much forest habitat as possible. John Warner has a long history of managing multi-use challenges relevant to forest management. He has been with the Texas A&M Forest Service for 26 years, and has spent the past 14 years in the Conroe District office. John is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University in forestry and business. He is currently pursuing his Masters of Science in Resource

Interpretation at Stephen F. Austin State University. John enjoys working with Texas Master Gardener and Naturalist programs, especially teaching basic tree care and maintenance.

The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. and The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department sponsor this lecture series at The Woodlands South Regional Library, 2101 Lake Robbins Drive. This event is free and open to the public and is not sponsored or endorsed by Montgomery County Memorial Library System.
