WCA Announces Basic Drawing Classes with Susan Marie Newman

Dr. Thomas Aiguier Doe NORTH CHATHAM – Dr. Thomas Aiguier Doe, 93, of North Chatham, formerly of West Springfield, MA, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2015 after a lengthy illness. The son of William and Minnie Doe, he was born in Linden, NJ, March 31, 1922. He knew by age twelve that he wanted to become a doctor and pursued his dream at Bates College (1943) where he met his wife, Harriett E. Gray. They married in 1944 and lived in New Haven, CT, where he attended Yale Medical School (1946) under the Army Medical School Training Program. He completed his residency at New Haven Hospital before beginning active duty in June 1948. A Captain in the Army Medical Corps, he served as Chief of Pediatrics, Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone. He began his private practice in Springfield, MA, and settled in West Springfield, where he was a member of the First Congregational Church. He was a staff member of the Springfield Hospital (now BayState Medical Center), Mercy Hospital, Springfield, MA, and Providence Hospital, Holyoke, MA. He was appointed Chief of Pediatrics of Springfield Hospital in 1962 and started their pediatric cardiology practice in the late 1960s. He left his private practice in 1978 to become the first pediatrician at Medical West, Chicopee, MA. Considered by his peers to be the Dean of local pediatrics, he was known for his quiet dignity. His calmness was always reassuring to his patients. He loved to travel with his family to the national parks, and winter brought ski trips to the Blandford Ski Area and Jackson, NH. His family began vacationing in Chatham during the 1950s and they built a summer home in West Chatham in 1969. He and his wife Harriett retired to the house in 1987. He rekindled his love for music joining the Mid-Cape Chorus, and the choir and bell choir at the First Congregational Church of Chatham. Widowed in 1996, he later met Judith Hamilton and they married in 1999. They spent happy years traveling and taking part in many Cape activities. He was predeceased by his first wife Harriett and his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and James Horsfield. He is survived by his wife Judy, his children and their families: David and Peggy Doe of Westfield, MA; their daughters Kathleen and Megan; Allan Doe and Lenore Grubinger, of Northampton, MA; their children Michaela and Sam; Deborah and David Schindel of Rio Rancho, NM, their sons Michael, and Alex and his wife Kristen; Douglas and Susan Doe of Cranston, RI, their daughter Bridget Mackin; Prudence and Douglas Mattoon of West Springfield, MA; their children Michael, Laura Mitchell and her husband Michael, and their son Julian; two stepsons Robert and his wife Kirsten Fay of Katy, TX; and their daughter Kelsey; Stephen and Patty Fay of Avon, IN; and their daughters Miranda and Colleen. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Agawam, 760 Main St., Saturday October 10 at 11:00 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Baystate Children’s Hospital, 759 Chestnut Street, Springfield MA 01107, or to a charity of your choice.
Walter D. Fife WESTFIELD — Walter D. Fife, 60, of Westfield passed away on September 28, 2015 surrounded by his family and masonic brothers he was born in Springfield to the late Robert and Norine Fife. He is survived by a daughter Amanda Desouza of Uncasville, CT and a son Jeremy Bates of Brooklyn CT, also a sister Cynthia Youngclaus of new London CT, his aunt Ruth Fife of Westfield, lifetime friend and cousin Anne M. Guerin of Westfield and Michael R. Michon who always looked to Walt as his father figure. He was a Master Mason at Mount Moriah Lodge of Westfield also a member of the Widows Sons Stone Cutters chapter also served a short time in the US Army. Services will be held at Mount Moriah Lodge, 72 Broad St. Westfield on Saturday October 10, 2015 from 11AM-2PM. Reverend Hugh Francis Crean EAST LONGMEADOW — Rev. Hugh Francis Crean, 78, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015. He was born in Westfield on March 26, 1937 to the late Hugh and Nora (Brosnan) Crean. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary and High School in Westfield. He received his BA at Holy Cross College where he served as President of his Senior Class. He attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore from 1958 -1962 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Springfield in 1962. Fr. Crean received his Doctorate (Ph.D& S.T.D) from the University of Louvain in Belgium. Father was assigned to St. Michael Parish in East Longmeadow, MA from 19621969. He taught Theology at Elms College from 19731979 and beginning in 1973 preached over 100 priest retreats throughout the United States and Canada. He served as Diocesan Director of Continuing Education for Priests from 1974-1980. Fr. Crean was Co-Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Springfield from 1979-1989 and from 1989 -1992 served as Diocesan Vicar for priests and Director of Clergy Personnel for the Diocese of Springfield. Fr. Crean was Pastor of Holy Name Parish in Springfield, MA from 1993-1999 and Pastor of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield from 1999-2004. In retirement Fr. Crean served as Chaplain at Providence Place Retirement Community from 2004-2010. In addition to his pastoral assignments Fr. Crean served on many diocesan boards and committees and among his many accomplishments received an Honorary Degree from Elms College. He was pre-deceased by his beloved brothers John and William. Fr. Crean leaves his sister Sheila Crean-Rheault, his sisters-in-law, Joan Pavel and her husband Herb and Clare “Pat” Crean. He also leaves his cousins Joseph Daly and Jack Daly as well as several cherished nieces, newphews and grand- nieces and grand- nephews as well as many faithful friends, parishioners and his brother priests of the Diocese of Springfield. A wake will be held on Friday, October 9th from 2-5 p.m. in St. Mary; Church in Westfield. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 5 p.m. in the Church. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mary Church on Saturday, October 10th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery in Westfield. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Fr. Crean may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Rita M. Cotton SOUTHWICK — Rita M. (Pelletier) Cotton, 89, (19262015) passed away peacefully Sunday, October 4, 2015. Born on May 3, 1926, in Lowell, MA, she was the daughter of Arthur and Vivian (Ely) Pelletier. Rita has been a resident of Southwick since 1971. Rita enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and the care to the well being of animals, we must not forget bingo. Rita was predeceased by her husband Roderick B. Cotton and son-in-law Robert F. Girard. She is survived by a son Robert V. Cotton and his husband Raymond H. LandryCotton, two daughters Doris M. Cotton and Linda A. Cotton-Girard. Rita also leaves behind four special girlfriends; Dina, Dot, Doris, Terry and many other hearts she touched over the years. Her funeral and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Robert E Cusack Funeral Home, Westfield, is entrusted with the arrangements. WESTFIELD — The Westfield Creative Arts (WCA) together with Westfield on Weekends, Inc. (WOW) proudly announces that Susan Marie Newman is beginning her next basic drawing series of classes to begin October 19th. Basic Drawing is a four-week course that will cover shape, form, line, lighting, shading, texture SUSAN MARIE NEWMAN and value. The Founder of WCA, Lester Walshin, recommends this class for beginners, as well as those who may be interested in picking up a hobby that “life” may have interrupted. WOW and WCA recently combined to form Westfield’s newest community arts organization for adults, located at the Rinnova Building at 105 Elm Street in Westfield. Beginning Drawing classes will take place at this location on Mondays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Ms. Newman is a lifelong resident of West Springfield and has explored a variety of mediums finding her preferred medium in pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink. A member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Susan currently chairs the West Springfield Arts Council. She is a founding member of the Artists at the Crossroads, and a member of the Tobacco Valley Artists Association. Her collected works are shown throughout the Pioneer Valley and found in private collections across the United States. Walshin added that WCA has designed a schedule of autumn classes that will appeal to all levels of skill and learning. Classes are forming now and are designed so that new comers shouldn’t worry about missing previous instruction dates. WCA offers various adult classes in quilting, watercolor painting, oil painting, basket making, chair caning, knitting, crocheting, stained glass making, rug hooking, as well calligraphy and upholstering. Materials needed for class are indicated on the WCA website at www.westfieldcreativearts.com. Registration forms can also be found online or call us at 413-562-5967 to inquire or register for classes. A minimum of three students is required. Stop by the Rinnova Gallery to see the variety of arts and crafts on display, including gourds, lamps, Westfield Note cards, and jewelry as well as some truly beautiful pieces of art. Southwick Spirit Walk —October 24 SOUTHWICK — The Third Annual “A Walk with Southwick Spirits” will be on Saturday October 24 at 2 P.M. Enter and park at the New Southwick Cemetery and walk to the Old Cemetery where your tour will begin. Local personalities, positioned near the gravestones, will tell stories about those characters in Southwick history. One gravestone was even featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. The Russell COA will host a Health and Well Being Fair, Thursday, October 29h from 9:00 a.m.- noon at the Russell Senior Center, 65 Main St., Russell, MA. Various vendors will be ready to supply participants with information and guidance. This event is open to the public and staff from the Huntington Health Center will be on hand to administer flu vaccinations to area residents over the age of nineteen. The immunizations will operate on a walk-in basis, so no appointment is needed. An insurance ID card will be required.
