BAXTER GAP REACHES DIZZY HEIGHTS AS GREYHOUND NUMBER 400 FINDS A NEW HOME. The Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) centre at Baxter on the Mornington Peninsula has re-homed its 400th greyhound, Dizzy.

Dizzy is pictured below with his new owners, Nathan Kriening and fiancée Ashlee Cooper.

Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton congratulated Michelle Fisher who manages the Baxter centre and the GAP team on achieving this marvellous milestone.

GAP News BAXTER GAP REACHES DIZZY HEIGHTS AS GREYHOUND NUMBER 400 FINDS A NEW HOME.

The Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) centre at Baxter on the Mornington Peninsula has rehomed its 400th greyhound, Dizzy.

The number is a milestone for the centre at Baxter which was established just over two years ago to support the main GAP headquarters in Seymour and service the south-eastern suburbs and Gippsland.

Nathan Kriening and fiancée Ashlee Cooper felt sure they had found the right dog when they met Dizzy, who has been renamed Jet out of consideration for Nathan’s human mate Dizzy.

“He is jet black and fast so it’s appropriate,” says Nathan.

They went to Baxter “just looking”. They met a few dogs, then they were introduced to Dizzy. The new addition to their home in Keysborough must also get along with two kelpies, four-year-old Digger and Scooby who is fourteen and a half.

It was Scooby’s advanced years that started Nathan thinking about getting another companion for Digger so he wasn’t on his own when the older dog does eventually pass away.

“Dizzy was the sixth dog we saw and we fell in love with him. We were looking for a dog that was a good match for us who would get along with our kelpies. We are both outgoing people and he was the first dog to came up to both of us. He wasn’t shy at all,” Nathan said. “He is definitely fitting into the clan.”

Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton congratulated Michelle Fisher who manages the Baxter centre and the GAP team on achieving this marvellous milestone.

“We knew there were people around the city and in the south-east who were interested in fostering and adopting greyhounds, so we leased some kennel space on the Mornington Peninsula,” Mr Clayton said.

“When I visited Baxter, I couldn’t believe how busy it was – no-one had time to talk to me, there were people and dogs coming in and out.

“It has been very successful, and we are soon to open a dog café, City GAP on the edge of the city – a community hub where prospective greyhound fosterers, adopters and greyhound owners can meet, enjoy each others’ company and get information about GAP. “GAP’s success is an indication of the growing demand for these wonderful, gentle dogs. In the 2017 financial year Victoria’s GAP centres re-homed over 1300 greyhounds, which is a record. GAP is a worldclass re-homing program, you won’t find a better program anywhere.”

Ms Fisher said the centre is open most weekends, by appointment only.

She said adoptions began slowly in 2015, averaging three dogs each weekend, which grew to four dogs last year and now averages six dog every weekend.

“We get people coming from the northern suburbs and the inner city, all through the south and from Gippsland. There is a lot on interest on this side of town and it has been terrific that GAP has been able to grow with the demand.”

Placed in consecutive runs over 500 metres at Bendigo, beaten 0.6 lengths, 21 July, then 525 metres Traralgon, beaten 3.03 lengths, 8 September, before stepping up in class to 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 24 September.

Started from box three and finished fourth, beaten 4.47 lengths in the race won by Slippery Sam (29.90) so that was a good effort.

Won first start, over 520 metres at Ipswich on 11 February, and was placed twice from next four starts in Queensland before coming to Melbourne.

Some greyhounds take a while to settle

The TAB Great Chase series brings together Victoria’s greyhound racing community and disability sector, with the state’s 13 race clubs hosting community days between 2 August and 25 October. The community days are social outings for around 100 groups of the intellectually and physically disabled and their carers. They also have the chance to share in a pool of $50,000.

Meanwhile, more than $200,000 will be spread among greyhound racing participants from the racing component of the series, which runs from October 6-25.

“How it all began” Work begins on the original straight and horseshoe circuits

In 1933, two prominent coursing identities of the day, Jack McKenna and Roy Maidment colluded on an idea to promote Plumpton Coursing and Track Speed Coursing at the site now occupied by the Sandown thoroughbred course.

With the assistance of some influential coursing enthusiasts, the existing horse training establishment lease was relinquished and despite the wettest winter on record, speed coursing commenced in September 1935.

Racing continued until 1942 when the grounds were used by the US Army, and resumed in 1944. By this time the venue had become the ‘Mecca of Victorian Speed Track Racing’ due to the renowned strength of the betting ring and near faultless racing on both the straight and circle track.

The club made a failed attempt to purchase the site in 1947 before the Melbourne Racing Club successfully acquired the land in 1948 with plans to build a new state of the art thoroughbred track.

The Sandown Park Coursing Club was given three years before works would begin on the new race track.

In 1950, McKenna negotiated the purchase of the land on Lightwood Road located on the other side of the railway line. The site was owned by three different interests, and following a period of negotiation, the 19 acre parcel of land was purchased for £9200.

Works began almost immediately with equipment and other infrastructure being transferred from the old site to the new, however works were ground to a halt when the Dandenong Shire Council voted 11-1 against granting approval for the club to operate on the site.

McKenna was given the opportunity to address the full council which duly reversed the decision to unanimous approval.

Racing on the new track, comprising a horseshoe and straight track, commenced in September 1952 with

Until this point, greyhound racing club were run on a proprietary basis, (as in, for a profit by private interests). This changed in 1955 when the state government passed legislation prohibiting proprietary racing.

The government issued two licenses for the promotion of non-proprietary racing in metropolitan Melbourne.

The National Coursing Association of Australia organised the formation and registration of a company, the National Coursing Association to manage of the licenses, while the Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association managed the other.

Confusion between the names of the National Coursing Association of Victoria and the National Coursing Association saw the later change its name to the Sandown Greyhound Racing Company, and later, the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club.

The new company purchased the existing site for £55,000 from the soon to be defunct Sandown Park Coursing Company.

The price was considerably less than what the owners had been offered from other interests, however the partners in the old company was eager to see the site continue to be used as a greyhound racing venue.

Jack McKenna was responsible for raising funds for the purchase of the property and achieved this by issuing £50 debenture subscriptions (earning 7% interest per annum, paid every six months and maturing after 10 years).

Works on the conversion of the day time horseshoe and straight track to a night time mechanical hare venue began in January 1956, and despite speculation the track would be ready to open as early as May 31st, the gala opening of the new venue was set for Saturday 8 September 1956.

Paw note – A second proprietary coursing track, Gracedale Park operated in Springvale from 1938 to 1955. The Springvale Town Hall now occupies the site.
