With this years Easter Egg final set to be run and won on April 20, greyhounds from across Australia will be vying to add their name to an illustrious honour roll, which includes legendary chasers such as Rapid Journey (1998), Stately Bird (2000), Brett Lee (2001), Paua To Burn (2005), Slater (2007), Cosmic Rumble (2010) and Fernando Bale (2015).

Dimity Maher Wednesday Rewind – 2009 Golden Easter Egg Final In 2009, I attended my first Golden Easter Egg final at Wentworth Park and certainly wasn’t disappointed with the result. A quality field including the likes of El Galo, Miss Elly Mint and Did I Entertain stepped out, vying for the $150,000 winners’ purse, which was won by $17 outsider Dana Beatrice. A daughter of Collision and Dana Betty, this 26kg pocket rocket was a winner of 28 races throughout her career and stunned the large crowd in attendance on a cool April evening, taking advantage of a glorious rails run at the first turn to dash away from her rivals, saluting by five and a half lengths in a sizzling time of 29.70. Miss Elly Mint, trained by renowned conditioner Robert Smith finished in second position and was a notable superstar throughout her career, havingwon forty four of her sixty-six career starts, including a record sixteen straight wins during 2008 and 2009. She added the Group Two Gosford Gold Cup to her impressive resume back in 2009 and broke a staggering three track records in thirteen days at The Gardens and Gosford. Third placegetter El Galo needs no introduction after a stellar career for legendary Victorian trainer Jason Thompson. This son of Where’s Pedro and Roxy Reason was a winner of forty-four races and made a staggering eighteen group races, with victories in the 2009 Group One Temlee, 2009 Group One Adelaide Cup, 2008 Group One Brisbane Cup, 2008 Group Two Gold Coast Cup, 2008 Group Two Bendigo Gold Cup Final, 2008 Group Two Warrnambool Cup and 2008 Group Three Bulli Gold Cup. A successful career at stud has seen the blue flash produce the likes of El Brooklyn (x Dark Name), also trained by Thompson, winner of the 2012 Group - 10 -

ONE of Tasmania’s most popular greyhounds, Disney Bound (March 2014 Decembrist x Disney Bound) will be celebrating his fifth birthday in a couple of weeks, but he obviously doesn’t know it. Whilst most five year old are enjoying the life of a couch potato, this outstanding greyhound is not only still racing, but his form sheet at 12 February, shows him having won his past two starts, over 580 metres at Devonport. He is from a litter of six named, which included, Bad Blood, 24-2-3-1, Every Saturday 0-0-0 -0, Merinda Hannah, 25-4-7-4, Nanna Grey, 2-0-0-0 and Nanna June, 41-1-4-4. His overall record reads 121 starts, for 26-2125 and $80,053 in stakes. He has won three times over 580 metres at Devonport (32.98), where he has also won over 452 metres (25.88). At Hobart he has won seven races, three over 461 metres (26.00), three over 599 metres (34.29) and also won over 709 Metres (41/28). At Launceston he has won ten races, six over 515 metres (29.68), three over 720 metres (42.69) and has also won there over 600 metres (35.29). What a great greyhound, and a great training feat by his owner-trainer Robin Stocks, from Risdon Vale to keep going so well at his age.

Copley’s Corner (Compiled by Gerard Guthrie) able to do.” It was the fourth time Britton had won the Zoom By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines Top in the last six years, having previously won the event with Cheetah Zorro (2014), Space Star (2015) and last year with Fanta Bale, enhancing the Lara mentor’s reputation as greyhound racing’s Bart Cummings. Despite his lack of racing fitness and a less than ideal draw in eight, Tornado Tears started $2.20 favourite in the $75,000 to-the-winner Zoom Top, ahead of NSW visitor Poco Dorado ($4.30) and his Group 1-winning kennelmate Barcali ($7.70). Tornado Tears began well from his outside alley but wasn’t able to cross outsider Black Impala ($28.30) and Poco Dorado. After momentarily being caught wide, Tornado Tears found the fence with a lap to go and the writing looked to be on the wall when he moved into second in the back straight. But as Tornado Tears sweated on a rails run, reserve Blue Moon Rising ($10.80), a litter brother and kennelmate to Poco Dorado, swept to the front; however the favourite wouldn’t be denied and kicked back strongly along the inside in a stirring finish to score by .36 of a length in 42.51sec. Even though he hasn’t been over 700 in his comeback, he was showing all the signs he was more than okay. “Greyhounds like this just don’t come around often. He is a dog that knows how to find the line and that is exactly what he did tonight.”

Tornado storms back to the Top

Watchdog Mobile Form Guide Australia’s best stayer Tornado Tears demonstrated all his champion qualities with a magnificent return to the track in the Group 1 Zoom Top (725m) at The Meadows on the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival. In a superb training performance by champion mentor Robert Britton, Tornado Tears dug deep to win the invitation-only Zoom Top first-up after five months on the sidelines. The son of the great Fernando Bale and Tears Siam, a litter sister to Britton’s 2015 Zoom Top hero Space Star, hadn’t been seen in action since September 22, when he won the Group 3 Top Cat Video Cup at the same venue. “He has just got me in awe,” said Robert Britton. “Tornado Tears does things that dogs just shouldn’t be

Copley’s Corner (Compiled by Gerard Guthrie) Barooga Brett all-the-way in Temlee Special Deliver dominates Rookie Rebel

By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines

Barooga Brett claimed his second Group 1 trophy for 2019 at The Meadows when outpointing the best sprinters in the land in Saturday night’s Temlee (525m) and the track specialist’s sights are now firmly set on the Australian Cup. Owned and trained by Brooke Ennis, Barooga Brett won the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows on January 5, made the final of the Group 1 Maturity there last July and had won seven from 11 over the 525m course prior to the invitation-only Temlee. But despite his imposing credentials at The Meadows, Barooga Brett, a son of Barcia Bale and Destini Gold, started at $7.50 from an awkward box six draw in the $100,000 to-the-winner Australian Cup lead-up. After winning the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup one week earlier, Orson Allen started $2.40 favourite from box two, with Poke The Bear, runner-up at Cranbourne and winner of the Topgun, The Meadows’ other Group 1 invitational, the $3.30 second elect from box five. Melbourne Cup hero My Redeemer was at $6.60, while underlining the depth of the field, Hasten Slowly, runner-up in both the Australian Cup and Topgun at the venue in 2018, was a $23.60 outsider. “Brett is continually improving and to have won a Group 1 race in the Silver Chief here and to do it again in an invitational is an exceptional effort.” There was an emotional note to the victory, with Barooga Brett previously owned by the late Norma Gost, who passed away last November. Brooke and Jamie Ennis forged a successful association with Norma and partner Jim Psaila several years ago through the deeds of star stayer Lady Toy. “We still share our wins with Jim,” Brooke said. “Losing someone is always extremely sad but ‘Bretty’ is making this a very special time and we are sure Norma continues to watch down on him and be very proud.”

By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines Rising star Deliver continued the perfect start to his middle distance career with a dominant all-the-way victory in the Group 1 Rookie Rebel (600m) at The Meadows on Saturday night. Trained by Seona Thompson, Deliver won the Group 1 Vic Peters Classic in Sydney over 520m last November and the son of Fernando Bale and Veetee Saharrah has made a seamless and ultra-impressive transition to the middle distance ranks in the early weeks of 2019. After two wins over Sandown’s 595m course, highlighted by the Listed Maidment Memorial, Deliver tuned up for the $75,000 to-the-winner Rookie Rebel with a scorching 34.09sec victory at his 600m debut at The Meadows. Drawn in box three for the Rookie Rebel, Deliver started even-money favourite, ahead of Sale Cup winner Neo Cleo ($5.10), Benali ($6) and reserve Blue Striker ($6.50). The market proved to be spot on as Deliver came out running and found the front and he was never seriously threatened in a flawless front-running exhibition, defeating Blackjack Neo ($23.80) by 2.46 lengths in another flying gallop of 34.19sec, with Blue Striker finishing third. “Deliver is a very honest greyhound and to win one Group 1 race, let alone two and a Group Listed, is a great effort,” said co-trainer Jason Thompson, husband of Seona. “We thought he would run the 600m eventually but not this quickly. We thought he would be racing the middle distance when he was around two and a half to three years old. Deliver has now won 13 of his 24 starts, with owner/breeder Vince Tullio saying that provided he pulls up well after his second Group 1 success he will drop back to 525m for next Saturday night’s Australian Cup heats.

Joy Sandford Friends of Greyhound

There has been a lot of questions from people with new Adoption Programs (Australia) dogs who are caught by surprise when the 'new love of their life' starts to do a few things out of the "ordinary" The greyhound community lost one of its greatest or gets a bit naughty. ambassadors last week and will be the poorer for Don's passing. Congratulations - your dog is settling in to Planet Pet and now feels brave enough to start to push the boundaries.

A beautiful, gentle, quiet man, Don was a greyhound whisperer. There was just something about him, and every grey he met fell in love with him. THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL, not acceptable He, along with wife Jenny had a house full of BUT completely normal. greyhounds, but there was always room for one more It can start as early as three weeks, or 16 weeks or more foster. Greyhounds in the home Pic of the week

Amanda Beet Just curious as to people's attitudes to other breeds. I am prompted to ask after my gorgeous Rosie was stopped for cuddles outside a local Cafe the other day by a lady who was a self-confessed sight hound junkie! We chatted for a while about Greys and whippets, then I mentioned that Rosie's "brother" Bob is a Labrador. She recoiled in horror and wanted to know how I could like living with another such different breed (she thought labs were thugs!). I went on to tell her I've also had corgis - one of whom was inseparable from our first Greyhound. I think she left in shock! Does it have to be only one breed for you, or can opposites be fun?

Lynn Garrard Friends of Greyhound Adoption Programs (Australia)

My two are best mates, although my greyhound swims like she's a Lab, and the lab has learned to roach like a hound....

Sorry about the poorer quality pic but I had to share. I am astounded and it teared me up. This is Jerry snuggling in to my Mum (his grand mum who he does not see often at all). What's special about it is that we have had him 2 1/2 years and he has never snuggled. What makes this even more special and heart warming is Mum lost her husband this morning to cancer. ❤❤❤ This was the best therapy that only Jerry could give. Angels do come with 4 legs and a tail Thank you Lynn for sharing this heartwarming story.

Mike Fortescue

Ziva the Grey and Elly the Weim enjoyed each other's company for 6 years until Elly passed. I have 2 greys at the moment, but would like to rescue another Weimaraner when I find the right match. Thanks Mike for sharing that great photo, and good luck with your Weimaraner search.

Rhonda’s World Rhonda’s World

Then Rhonda found this treasure.

Rhonda Singleton shares photos from her collection of History and Memorabilia. Rhonda lives in New South Wales and became involved with greyhounds in 2007 as a owner and racing them all over the state.

The Colemans

Taken in 1980, the photo features General Jeff, with Christine Coleman, husband of Jimmy, and Rhonda tells they are now retired and living on the Gold Coast. General Jeff was whelped in January 1978, by Ungwilla Lad, from the 1976 Australian Cup winner, Odious, and as we saw in the first photo, the pair finished first and third in the race, and recalling, Ungwilla Lad had won the race in 1975. Also of interest was that Ungwilla Lad was by a former Australian Cup winner, Benjamin John x Sweet Debana. A few weeks ago Rhonda sent us this photo of the 1976 General Jeff was an outstanding sptinter, Australian Cup presentation, featuring the great sprinter winning the 1980 National Derby, Brisbane Cup and Odious, with trainer Jimmy Coleman, who was owned Perth Cup, and Jimmy Coleman said he was the best by Terry Paige and Bill Malouf. dog he ever put a lead on. Odious defeated Weekly Special and Ungwilla With a pedigree like his what else would you Lad and Ungwilla Lad, who had won the race in 1975. expect Hard to believe that was 43 years ago? and the photo brought back a lot of memories for many people.
