With the Group One National Derby set to be run and won this Saturday night at Wentworth Park, some of Australia’s most outstanding male chasers have been victorious in the age-restricted classic.

Slater (Surf Lorian x Wipe Out) took out the National Derby back in 2007 by four lengths in a solid time of 29.99. He was one of the most talented greyhounds to ever step out onto a race track. Trained in Victoria by Darren Murray, Slater notched up 24 victories from 44 starts and amassed $412,465 in prizemoney. The brindle chaser finished his career with an extremely impressive resume, which included a Group One win in the 2007 Golden Easter Egg, second in the 2007 Group One Melbourne Cup and victories in the 2006 Group Two Shepparton Cup final, Group Two Great Chase Final and Group Two Temlee.

sizzling 29.87 from box seven. The white and brindle flyer won a total of seven group one finals, two group two finals and a group three final throughout his outstanding career.

Elite Blue Size was one of the most consistent greyhounds during his time on the track, after taking out the prestigious final back in 2010 at Ladbrokes Gardens in a blistering 29.33. A beautifully bred son of Elite State and Size ‘em Up, the blue flash won 33 of his 54 starts and notched up $230,746 in prizemoney. The Reg Kay trained chaser had an outstanding 2010, which included victories in the Group Two Gosford Gold Cup, Group Two Maitland Cup, second in the Group Two Country Challenge Final and third in the Group Three Bulli Gold Plate.

Dalgetty Litter THIS week’s review of litters selected from the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 8 January, starts with a litter seven pups by three time group race winner, Dalgetty (April 13 Stagger x Rockin’ Along).

Dalgetty raced 33 times for 16 wins and eight placings, earning stakes of $243,870.

He wins included the Group 1 Temlee, Group 2 Geelong Cup and Group 3 Silver Bullet, and he retired with P.B winning times including 29.09 at Sandown and 29.42 at The Meadows.

Nyora breeder, Simon Mallia has his litter of four dogs and three bitches this week, who are from the well bred, unraced bitch, Zippy’s Me Mum (February 2016 My Bro Fabio x Zippy Chicki), whose dam is by Kiowa Sweet Trey* x Ity Bity Chicki (Hallucinate x Wheely Wapped).

She is from a handy litter, which included African Zephyr, 5 wins, Belt Up Bubs, Benkennie Chic, 15 wins, Get Some Zip, 38-0-8-4, Hoya, 1-1-0-0, King Jeremy, 4 wins, Num Chuck Chicki, 3 wins and Rising Forest, 6 wins.

Well done George HIGHLY respected Essendon breeder, George Farrugia has two outstanding litters on this week’s list, with a total of 23 pups, nine dogs and an 14 bitches.

The first of the two litters has eleven pups by the highly rated, 2016 US All American, Kind Cruel Red* (April 2014 Bella Infrared* x Cruel To Be Kind).

No Look Fernando poised for Derby Final

Fernando Blaster Fernando Blaster, who went into his heat without the benefit of a race or even a trial at Wentworth Park, stole the show at Friday night's Ladbrokes National Derby & National Futurity meeting.

Trained at Ettrick in the NSW Northern Rivers by Terry Jordan, Fernando Blaster (pictured) rocketed out of box six in heat four and steamrolled his opposition to win by just over 15 lengths, covering the 520m in a sensational 29.61sec.

After the race owner Merv Papworth said: "Terry Jordan bred this dog and sold him to me when he was a week old puppy.

"When he stepped onto the track tonight it was the first time he had ever seen Wentworth Park.''

Fernando Blaster is likely to start favourite in next Saturday's $75,000 to the winner final as he has drawn box one.

The other Derby heat winners on Friday were the Jeff Britton-trained Axel Footluce, who ran down Fantastic Yankee to score in 29.78, Richmond dog North, who led throughout in 29.98, and Feral Franky, who took 30.13 to win but put up an amazing performance after being skittled at the first turn.

Melbourne trainer Jeff Britton had a field night as apart from qualifying for the Derby with Axel Footluce, he took out all three heats of the group 1 bitches' classic, the Ladbrokes National Futurity.

Britton's winners were Oakvale Magic, who led throughout in 29.69, Circle Of Dreams, who dwelt at the start but railed to the lead at the first turn and scored in 29.93, and the speedy Flossing, who led all the way in 30.13.

Box draw for the Futurity final favours Oakvale Magic, who has drawn box three, while Circle Of Dreams has drawn four and Flossing came up with box six.

Sydney's best hope in the Futurity, Sorry Scott, who chased home Circle Of Dreams in her heat, drew box seven while Queensland-trained Dam Slippery, owned in Sydney by Michael Phillips, got box eight.

Dam Slippery, who prefers an inside draw, exited box eight in her heat and ran a gallant second, chasing Oakvale Magic all the way.

Adam Crouch, whose father Andrew trains Sorry Scott, was disappointed with box seven in the final, but said: "Our hope is for Flossing, who has box six, to begin fast and give us a good cart across in the run to the first turn.''

While Fernando Blaster looks boxed to win the Derby, Rio Brave's trainer David Geall was delighted with his dog's box two draw.

Rio Brave trialled solo in a sizzling 29.61 at WP before coming from box seven and finishing strongly when second behind tearaway leader North in his heat.

"Rio Brave has a big motor and he is far better positioned in box two in the final than he was when he had box seven in his heat tonight,'' Geall said on Friday.

"And I think he will be all the better for Friday's hitout.''

Both Classics are stepped in history the Derby first run in 1963 when won by the mighty Keen Linen and the Futurity run for the first time a year later in 64, when won by Cultured Girl. The races were the NCA’s flag ship events for many years and have been won by some of the superstars of the sport.

The National Derby was first run in 1963 and was for a long period the NCA’s Group 1 flagship at one time it was worth $100,000 to the winner. The club changed its direction a few years ago, making the St Ledger better known as the Paws Of Thunder the richer of the two events settling on $75,000 to the winner for the Derby. With the deregistration of the NCA both Group 1 features are operated by the GBOTA. Listed here is the full honour roll.

The leaders bumped turning for home which brought Australia Day celebrations kicked off early last the field together and the race was well and truly up for Thursday night as Deliver and Orson Allen defeated star-studded line ups to win the Maidment grabs at the top of the straight.

Orson Allen had the momentum and most importantly Memorial and Australian Sprint. found clear running turning for home, to finish over the top of Blue Striker and Not Available.

“It was a bit like Bradbury that!” said trainer Correy Maidment Memorial winner - Deliver Grenfell.

“He had some bumping duels early with the reserve (Vital Force) but he ended up in the right place at the right time. Credit to the dog, he’s flying at the moment.”

The win was Orson Allen’s second feature race win at Sandown Park after the Shootout back in November.

Deliver entered the Maidment Memorial (595m) as one of the three standouts in the market alongside My Redeemer and Neo Cleo.

He jumped perfectly from box 1 and streaked away to a clear lead while Roger Express and Dyna Chancer dueled for second position.

Deliver turned for home well clear and despite the best efforts of the fast finishing Dyna Chancer, Deliver held on to win by three lengths in a race record 33.95.

It was Deliver’s second feature win following his Orson Allen after his Australian Sprint win.

“In his starts at Wentworth Park he hasn’t got away too well, outside of those he been jumping and he got away perfectly tonight,” explained handler Jason Thompson.

“Hopefully he’s doing enough to gain an invitation for the Rookie Rebel (a group 1 over 600m at The Meadows in February), that’s his target.”

The win was the Thompson’s second Maidment Memorial triumph following Moriera’s 2016 victory.

Two races later, an outstanding field greeted the starter for the Australian Sprint (515m).

By Gerard Guthrie Jeff Britton has his sights set on a Group 1 double at Sydney’s Wentworth Park this Saturday after enjoying a night to remember in last Friday’s heats of the National Derby and National Derby.

Britton dominated the heats of the National Futurity for the female sprinters, preparing all three winners; fastest qualifier Oakvale Magic (29.69sec), Group 2 Laurels winner Circle Of Dreams (29.93sec) and Laurels runner-up Flossing (30.15sec).

Laurels heroine Circle Of Dreams was one of Jeff Britton’s three winners in the Group 1 National Futurity heats.

After clean-sweeping the Futurity run-offs, Britton, who won the National Derby in 2004 with Pacific Sky, claimed his fourth straight winner for the night, taking out heat one of the Derby with Axel Footluce, which ran down odds-on favourite Fantastic Yankee in 29.78sec.

Robinson rewarded with Coursing honour

By Greyhound Racing Victoria Gary Robinson was the recipient of the Noel Banks Medal at the 2018 Victorian Coursing Awards, held at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club.

A long-serving member and President of the Longwood

Coursing Club, Gary typifies the dedication of the many volunteers who have kept the coursing code in existence for more than 140 years.

“I’ve been involved with the Longwood club for 20-odd years including the past 12 as President, and I find myself at Noel Banks medalist the club two or three times a Gary Robinson with week, depending on what host Victoria Shaw needs to be done,” Gary said.

An experienced trainer based in nearby Violet Town, Gary sacrifices his own racing opportunities for others.

“Gary loves racing and he loves coursing, but he doesn’t race his greyhounds at Longwood because he is busy helping run the meetings,” said National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig.

“The Noel Banks Medal honours the famed greyhound administrator who won an unprecedented 11 Waterloo Cups with greyhounds he either bred, owned or trained. This Medal recognises a person’s outstanding contribution to coursing, and Gary is certainly a deserved recipient.”

Craig expressed his gratitude to the many volunteers within Victorian coursing ranks and acknowledged the owners and trainers for the comradery they show.

“Coursing numbers grew 15 per cent in 2018 and while there are a number of enormous benefits to coursing, the main one is that it gives greyhounds another avenue. We look forward to another big season ahead, where we are hoping the growth will come in the form of coursing maidens, and we will also be holding an increasing number of veterans races.”

2018 Waterloo Cup winner Bear Left won the Coursing Greyhound of the Year, with Heathcote trainer Ray Henness delighted with what he discovered in his first season of coursing.

“Bear Left came to me from (Kyabram trainer) Calven Russell in sensational condition after being sold, so a big thank you to Calven and also to (new NCA Vice President) Murray Collyer for helping prepare him on Waterloo Cup weekend. Coursing is a great weekend and I’ll be back in 2019,” Henness said.

Russell, presented with the 2018 Coursing Trainer of the Year, said it was bitter-sweet seeing Bear Left win the Waterloo Cup given it was a race his family had chased for many years.

“My grandfather was a trainer who unsuccessfully tried to win a Waterloo Cup for many years, and my dad tried a few times as well as an owner. I’ve got some young pups coming through who I think will be suited to coursing so hopefully I can come back better than ever in 2019.”

Devon Meadows trainer Sean Lithgow was thrilled with his star chaser Gotham Queen winning the Female Greyhound of the Year for the second successive season.

“She has been unbelievable, and to win this a second time after having a litter of pups is very special. I look forward to coursing her pups in a couple of years,” Lithgow said.

But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active.
