Copley’s Corner compiled by Gerard Guthrie *Andrew Copley is on leave Deliver sets Silver Chief time standard By George Farrugia

Blue Striker

Deliver, in full flight

Group 1 winner Deliver set the time standard in Saturday’s Silver Chief heats, striding away to score in a Best of Night 29.686 over the 525-metre journey. The son of Fernando Bale and Veetee Saharrah began beautifully from box six, recording super splits of 5.03 and 17.66 on his way to a length and a half victory over Southern Ripple to progress to next week’s semi-final stage. Pre-post Silver Chief favourite Barooga Brett was also an impressive winner, recording a new PB of 29.80 when leading from go to whoa. The son of Barcia Bale and Destini Gold pushed his prize money over the $100,000 mark with his latest win and will be looking to qualify for the fourth Group final of his career. Anakie conditioner Jeff Britton trained a Silver Chief heat winning double after Crackerjack Skip (29.90) and He’s For Me (30.03) won the first and last heats respectively. Britton and partner Angela Langton have seven greyhounds that have progressed to next Saturday’s semi-finals. Other heat winners on the night included Penta Allen (30.06), Queenslander Rio Brave (30.13), Reiko Ablett (30.02) and Slingshot Hammer (29.93). The winners and runners-up from next Saturday’s semi -finals will progress to the Group 1 Silver Chief Final on January 5, worth $100,000 to-the-winner. Laurels Dream for Circle Of Dreams By Mick Floyd Circle Of Dreams secured Angela Langton her first group 2 Laurels with a brilliant all-the-way victory in last night’s $50,000 to the winner final. Owned by Langton in partnership with her mother, Circle Of Dreams began fairly but mustered quickly to

lead Flossing through the first turn with favourite Often Imitated and Shima Breeze close behind. The quartet cleared away from the Angela Langton after Laurels Presentation chasing pack, and as they turned off the back straight Circle Of Dreams extended her break to race to a five length victory. Her winning time of 29.352 seconds was a race record, shaving 0.001 of a second off Fantastic Skye’s previous mark. It was her fourth career victory from seven career starts and has now won over $64,000 in prize money. “It’s very exciting, it was great to see her jump to the front,” Langton said. At just 19 months of age, Circle Of Dreams was the youngest greyhound in the final and one of the youngest to contest the series. She made her debut in the November Vic Breed maiden at Sandown Park, making the final on TAB Melbourne Cup night. Her lack of experience showed on that occasion but has matured quickly in her starts since. “We probably threw her in a little inexperienced in the maiden series. “She hadn’t had a 500m or a field trial, but she was trailing well here so we thought we might as well put her in because those races only come around once or twice a year in the city. She’s just gotten better and better every start. “She’s learning and she’s beginning now which is great because she was showing she could begin in trials. I think that’s the key when you can get out in front, the others have to catch you so it was really good to see her begin.” Flossing, trained by Langton’s partner Jeff Britton, held on for second place making the night a particularly memorable one for the Anakie based trainers. “It was a good run. She’s had a couple little injuries here and there but she’s learning as well. They’re two young girls that look like they’ve got plenty of ability.” While Langton doesn’t have any immediate plans for her latest group race winner, she was excited about what a Laurels victory means beyond her racing career. “It’s a fantastic race to win. It’s one of the biggest girls only races on the calendar and that sort of race sets her up for breeding down the track. “It’s a really prestigious race and for her to win it so young, I’m pretty proud of her.” The Laurels is one of Sandown Park’s longest running feature races. Restricted to bitches aged 30 months or less, it was first run in 1963 and has been won by some of history’s greatest female chasers including Cheltenham Lass, Sandi’s Me Mum and Paua To Burn.

TIME FOR THE SEASONAL WARNING Noel McMahon Christmas is time of BBQs and when lots of food and chocolate is laying around the house. It is also a time when lots of NON dog people visit So... four things Make sure all chocolate is locked in cupboards and out of harms way Make sure all cooked bones and other tempting things are placed in secure bins and out of harms way Finally read the Riot Act to all your visitors to : Not feed your dog sausages and other toxic foods that will necessitate an emergency and costly vet trip And close and lock all gates and exit points on your property. If it offends your guests bad luck, it is your dogs home, not theirs. Russell Wade If I didn’t know that this was “Greyhound Normal” I would say my dog is broken. Greyhounds in the home Pic of the week….. Christmas attire for Gary - smart casual Genevieve Mary

Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active. - 29 -
