The greyhound community is saddened by the loss of Hugh Dunkley, just shy of his 89th birthday. Hugh was a successful greyhound breeder and trainer, and up until recently he was a regular at the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club. “Hugh is a second-generation trainer who started training greyhounds in the early 1940s from the age of twelve. He trained for legendary owner and bookmaker “Chummy” Parkes and also bred a litter than won over 200 races,” said Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club Manager, Amanda Cameron. More recently Hugh bred and owned group class greyhound Violet Crumble (pictured), who contested the Group 1 Sapphire Crown and Group 2 Traralgon Cup. A funeral for Hugh was held at Tobin Brothers Chapel, 210 Sladen Street, Cranbourne (corner Cooper Court) on Monday 19 November at 11.00 am. A private burial followed. -7-

Copley’s Corner Trio head Melbourne Cup betting

Start to tell the tale in Bold Trease

Andrew Copley

Andrew Copley

Blue Striker Poco Dorado

Poco Dorado is one of the main fancies in tomorrow night’s Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) at Sandown Park following a dominant come-from-behind heat win. The in-form NSW greyhound has won eight of her past nine starts and is the equal TAB favourite at $2.50 with Barcali after the pair were comfortably the fastest heat winners last week.

Three superstar greyhounds dominate the betting ahead of tomorrow’s $630,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park at 8.51pm. Black Opium ($3.10Fav) is unbeaten after seven starts and she recorded the fastest heat win in 29.21sec.

“On paper it looks a race in two, but once the lids open anything can happen,” said Poco Dorado’s trainer, John Finn. “Whichever out of Poco Dorado and Barcali begins better will probably win.” “Poco Dorado normally leads, but she is still getting used to racing in Victoria, where the starting boxes are a little bit different and the lure is quieter than at Wentworth Park.”

“This is a huge step up (in class) for her, but if she comes out like she did in her heat I don’t think there’s a Finn said Poco Dorado is “ideally drawn” in box seven. dog in the race that can lead her,” trainer Seona Thompson said. “She steps to the right when she comes out of the boxes so the wide draw suits perfectly,” Finn said. Kennelmate Poke The Bear, a winner of 10 of his past 13 starts and who Thompson describes as an “absolute Photos on this page by Clint Anderson professional”, is on the second line of betting at $3.30 from box six, while the David Geall-trained My Redeemer ($3.30) is also in the market after drawing the coveted box one. “The Cup field is very hot, so My Redeemer needed a good box and he’s got one, so that at least gives him a chance,” Geall said.

Chiquita Lass with new trainer Ray Henness after being purchased for $20,000 at Saturday’s Ready 2 Race Sales. An increase in quality across the board has led to record sales numbers at today’s Ready 2 Race auction at Bendigo’s Lords Raceway.

A total of 43 greyhounds were sold at auction this afternoon following the running of nine finals over 425m earlier in the day.

Despite the top seller, Chiquita Lass (pictured above), fetching $20,000, which was below the top sale price of previous years, the average sales price on the day reached record heights. Greyhound lovers had a ball at today’s free Community Day at The Meadows, an event put on by Greyhound Racing Victoria to thank people for bringing pet greyhounds into their lives.

“We had a very successful day,” Bendigo GRA Manager Troy Harley said. “We smashed the record in terms of the average sale price as it reached $6,880.” The average sale price since the Ready 2 Race Sales started in 2012 has never exceeded $5,000.

Harley predicted sales prices to go through the roof following Monday’s heats, at which 56 per cent of greyhounds broke 24.50sec, compared with 34 per cent in 2017 and 23 per cent in 2016.

And he was right, with prospective owners packing into Lords Raceway today and spending a combined total of $295,850. Four lots were passed in on the day, with those greyhounds remaining with their owners. The fastest performer today was Yohan (lot 75), who later sold for $10,000.

An adoption component was also incorporated into the day, with 16 greyhounds finding loving new homes. “A total of 432 people came along today and they collectively brought 171 retired greyhounds with them,” said event organiser, GRV’s Lauren Marie. Among the festivities were free dental checks, track tours, kids activities, dog-related stalls and complimentary catering including a barbeque and various food trucks. GRV holds two Community Days every year. Photos - Clint Anderson

Greyhounds in the home Noel McMahon Admin

Friends of Greyhound Adoption Programs (Australia) Australia

There is never going to be a good time to write this and I will get some expected backlash from some quarters but hey, what is new about that. If you own a greyhound your primary responsibility is its security, health and well being.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/144096608971567/

As an owner part of your job is to provide a secure environment in terms of gates and fences.

Laura Thomas Friends of Greyhound Adoption Programs (Australia) Taking this boy home. After a good name, nothing boring. Want something unique. Our other greyhound is called Sooty (came with name). Give me ideas

But another vital role is to teach family, friends and visitors the basics of keeping your dog safe. If your family and friends are incapable of providing this basic need, then don’t entrust your dog with them The facts are that some people are better equipped to handle greyhounds than others. They have better intuition and better skills. Having said that these skills can be learned by people willing to understand the requirements that this breed has. No one wants the horror and worry of an escaped dog running scared in unknown and dangerous areas So don’t be complacent.

Janet Ryman NieuwenhuisFriends of Greyhound Adoption Programs (Australia) Sprung!!!

If you have a property that is not secure fix it If you don’t have the skills to keep your dog safe do something about it. And if your family and friends are not skilled or lazy or just irresponsible you owe it to your dog not to entrust it with them.

Why not send us your favourite pic? editor@victoriangreyhoundweek.com.au We’d love to share it with everyone!

Mmmm... Gingerbread Men that squeak

You ARE taking us for a walk aren’t you?

Send us your favourite home pic! : editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active. - 29 -

Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________

Send us your favourite dogs in your home pic.
