Thursday 20 September 2018

Farewell Paul “Doggsy” Dolan Recently the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club and the wider racing industry was advised that our iconic race caller, Mr Paul Dolan, was hanging up the binoculars after almost five decades of service to the industry. Affectionately referred to as "Doggsy", Paul has made an invaluable contribution to greyhound racing since kicking off his career at the dogs at Gayndah in 1973. Paul's final call at Albion Park will be on Thursday night September 20, and the Club invites all industry stakeholders to attend the evening as a token of appreciation for Paul's service to the greyhound industry.

Some of the biggest names in race broadcasting from across the country will be in attendance to show their appreciation for Paul's service to the racing industry, which will make the evening a little bit more special for all. The first event will kick off at 6:44pm and as usual its free entry - see you then! Fellow race caller Anthony Jeffress has penned a special tribute to Paul which can be found on page Paul started his career as a race caller the same year I started as an independent greyhound journalist and have listened to his calls regularly over the past 45 years, well done Paul, Happy Retirement. Our People - Tribute to Paul Dolan END OF AN ERA IN QLD AS ‘DOGGSY’ SIGNS OFF ON FULL-TIME CALLING DUTIES By Anthony Jeffress After a distinguished career spanning across five decades, it is sure to be an occasion mixed with both sadness and celebration when we will mark the end of an era as popular Race Broadcaster - and my long -time colleague - Paul Dolan, retires as Queensland’s premier greyhound Racecaller this Thursday night. Known affectionately as ‘Doggsy’ to many of his friends – not to mention thousands of participants and listeners throughout Australasia and abroad - Paul recently announced his retirement, after deciding that the time was right to step down as the Number 1 voice of greyhound racing in the Sunshine State. “I turned 65 years of age in May, and about 3 months ago I was driving home from a night meeting at Albion Park. It was about 11.30 and I was getting close to home, and I actually fell asleep at the wheel of the car”, Paul recounted. “Fortunately it was in a divided road, and the rocking of the car going down a small embankment woke me up. I could see this great big drain looming up, but I swung the car and just missed it. It was then that I thought ‘No – this can’t happen again’, and that was when the decision was basically made”, he said. I was a mere toddler when Paul’s calling career kicked off way back in 1973; meaning listeners on and off the many courses where he has plied his trade will have been enjoying his lively and entertaining calls for over 45 years when he signs off after the last race at Albion Park on Thursday night. As many of us in the profession can vouch to have experienced when we started out, opportunities to get a calling ‘gig’ can be somewhat hard to come by. But that didn’t deter a young Paul! “I was keen to break into it [race broadcasting] but I was too shy to go up and approach the callers, so I wrote to basically every Secretary-Manager in SouthEast Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Only one of them wrote back: The great Harry Pledger, who was running Border Park-Tweed Heads, and he said I was to come down and meet their Caller, who was a guy named Martin Ross”. “It just so happened that Martin was looking for an off-sider. He got me to do some Maiden Qualifying trials – which I handled alright – and he said ‘I want to go to the Rugby League Grand Final in 3 weeks time, so you can do that meeting’. So I suppose you could say it was a case of being in the right place at the right time”. Being a dual-code Caller virtually throughout his career (with regular work in both the greyhound and thoroughbred industry), Paul’s voice and unique style is known to many punters and racing enthusiasts.

Paul Dolan, John Brasch and Anthony Jeffress “I actually started calling at the horses about six months before the dogs, and I will actually be calling a race at Toowoomba gallops on September 23rd after my final night at Albion Park greyhounds”. “But I don’t like putting down one or the other by unfairly saying I prefer one code over the other, so if I could go a Dead Heat that’d fit nicely!” Paul said. As for some of the personal favourites he has had the opportunity to call, Paul said that it was a privilege to have gotten to broadcast races of many of the greats, and many Group Classics. “It might surprise some people that I haven’t really got one favourite call. Calling a Group 1 or any of the track superstars is so satisfying. Some of the performances of the great Queensland bitch Bogie Leigh stand out; and I declare the great Rapid Journey to be the best greyhound I have ever seen. I did get to call him here in Queensland a couple of times, and the day he won the Queensland Cup on the old grass track at Beenleigh I would swear he had sparks coming off his paws. He won so many of Australia’s very best races, so 20 years down the track I still say he was the best”. “But having said that I didn’t see Fernando Bale or Brett Lee in the flesh”, Paul said. A loud and proud Queenslander at heart, Paul was also quick to acknowledge a couple of other track stars who had hailed from his beloved ‘Sunshine State’. “How can you forget Flying Amy? She was just amazing! And Dashing Corsair was a warrior right to the end, even winning the National Distance Final at his very last start”. Continued page 13

Our People

RACE DOG FOR SALE

Paul “Doggsy” Dolan retirement continued…..

Wild Bandit

As a Racecaller, Paul said his aim was to keep as many stakeholders as possible in mind. “I’ve always regarded that everyone in the ‘cog’ is important; the breeder, the owner, the trainer. But I’ve always considered that I am working for the punter. I’m there to service and paint a picture for the punter, and try and help them with a winner if I can”. RadioTAB General Manager David Salmon also acknowledged Paul’s long and fine career. “This is one of our greats who has decided to hang up the binoculars. After having his first call at Gayndah in March 1973, it’s fair to say that he’s called at just about every Queensland racetrack since”. [After tackling the task of completing a list some time back, Paul has recorded that he has called at around 104 tracks around the World during his career; and also estimates he has called well in excess of 60,000 races!] “Paul is not only one of greyhound racing’s favourites, but is also a long-time supporter of bush and country racing in the greyhound and thoroughbred codes. He’s also been a wonderful mentor to countless young callers,” David said. Salmon also announced that John ‘Bunny’ Brasch will assume the role as the principal greyhound Caller for the South-East Queensland corner from 27th September; in a move that has been warmly welcomed by greyhound enthusiasts [‘Bunny’ Brasch will also commence as Host of Sky Sports Radio’s ‘Going Greyhounds’ program from 1st October; presenting the radio program each Monday morning from RadioTAB in Brisbane]. John will be alongside Paul in covering ‘Doggsy’s’ final greyhound meeting on Thursday, and to mark the occasion, the Brisbane Greyhound Club will have many of Paul’s friends and many special guests gather on course. A number of fellow broadcasters have accepted the invitation to join Paul in the broadcast box; among them will be Paul’s long-time associate and fellow Racecalling icon, Ron Hawkswell. Author’s Note: I will always personally be grateful for Paul’s encouragement and guidance throughout my own Racecalling journey. Just as many others have experienced, Paul was always willing to field a phonecall or catch up for a friendly chat; making himself available to offer advice and words of support as we tailored our craft. It will be an honour and a privilege to not only join Paul this Thursday night, but also get to call a race on the program as well. Anthony Jeffress - 13 -

Copley’s Corner But perhaps the biggest surprise of the night came in the Superstars shine on Speed Star night Andrew Copley form of 22-month-old youngster Blue Striker. Trained by Peter Akathiotis, Blue Striker clocked 29.20sec when beating Degani by a length. Blue Striker shaved four lengths off his PB and clocking the third quickest time of the night over the 515m.

Poke The Bear

One-on-one greyhound racing took over Sandown Park on Sunday in the latest installment of the Speed Star. In what was a dynamic showcase of greyhound racing, the Speed Star appears to have an enormous future. The prospect of watching only two greyhounds competing may have less to some, but with 40 of Australia’s fastest greyhounds competing on the night, coupled with the opportunity for head-to-head betting, made it a spectacular event. Sky 2 provided comprehensive coverage of the meeting, which included pre and post-race interviews with trainers and handlers conducted by RSN’s enthusiastic race caller and form guru, James Van de Maat. And the superstars shone on the night, with Poke The Bear (29.12sec), Tornado Tears (33.66sec) and Rippin’ Sam (42.25sec), recording the fastest times over the 515m, 595m and 715m respectively. TAB provided a host of unique markets around the meeting, and those bold enough to bank on Dyna Double One’s long-standing 33.63sec track record over the 595m not being broken were rewarded with a juicy $1.90 on offer when markets opened last week. Triple Group 1 winner Tornado Tears got within half a length of the record when running a personal best 33.67sec. Among the other standout performances were Dyna Patty, who reeled in arch rival Orson Allen, while Not Available was just as impressive when running down Elevated.

Tornado Tears ran within half a length of Dyna Double One’s 595 metres track record.

Blue Striker defied his age (22months) to clock a lightning 29.10 on Speed Star night. All photos in Copley’s corner this wee were taken by Clint Anderson.

The opening heat was a fantastic spectacle, with the inform Benkennie Chic posted the fastest heat win of the night, a brilliant 29.67. This followed her sizzling last start Dapto win the previous week of 29.50. She made it four wins on the bounce for trainer Peter Mantach. The daughter of My Bro Fabio looks a major player in the final after drawing box two and was installed third favourite finalist at a generous $4. In heat two powerhouse sprinter Lagoon Rhett settled third early and stormed home to nail leader Zipping Tayla right on the line in a top effort of 29.87. He starts from the same draw in the final and will need to be handy early again to put himself in a winning position. Runner-up Zipping Tayla has come up with

the cherry for Jason MacKay and has been made a $3.20 race final favourite by the sponsor. Heat three saw carnage at the first turn with dual Group 1 winner and race favourite Raw Ability get into all sorts of trouble falling heavily and finishing the chances of several other contenders. One Hour Parking in front when it happened after leading from box one was not headed in the slowest of the heat winners 30.07. Infared Ethics at any sort odds finished second making the final for trainer David Smith. The fourth and final heat went to pinup sprinter Sky Wave starting a warm favourite for Vic Sultana – the daughter of Don’t Knocka Him chased early leader Twisted Love most of the trip getting home strong in the straight to win in 29.75. Given the win was her Dapto debut, Sky Wave seemed to relish racing at the tight Dapto circuit. She has been installed the $3.50 second favourite for the final, however she is certainly hit and miss and from box eight can’t make too many mistakes. Her last appearance in a Group 1 at Sandown in the National Sprint final from the same draw saw her put in an average performance, by her standards. Neil Brown

Hi fellow Greyhound lovers, Very happy to have found such an amazing greyhound support network. Yesterday, we adopted our amazing Lachy, who has the most amazing temperament, except when human food is around. He becomes very boisterous and jumps up everywhere (before, during and after when the food has been eaten). Would appreciate any advice in training him to relax in these instances. Thanks!! Beautiful, funny, adorable Skye! You joined our family just over a week ago, and we can’t imagine life without you! You make us laugh so much, and the absolute love and devotion you show to us all is right back at you. We have a first class smoocher - a bundle of love and happiness - and also a greyhound guard dog! The meter reader knew you meant business when you barked at the high viz shadow this morning, ha ha! Thanks for keeping us safe, for making us laugh, and for giving us all so much love, joy and happiness! We love you so much . Emily Stone

This worked great on my grey, probably pretty much a hacksaw blade in a wooden handle! Found easy to hold and works great. Louise Blitz
