LEAD STORY - ROACH MOTEL

STRANGE OLD WORLD

--At age 20, Kyle Kandilian of Dearborn, Mich., has created a start-up business to fund his college expenses, but it involves a roomful (in the family home) of nearly 200,000 cockroaches. The environmental science major at University of Michigan-Dearborn breeds species ranging from the familiar household pests, which he sells on the cheap as food for other people’s pets, to the more interesting, exotic Madagascar hissing roaches and rhino roaches, which can live for 10 to 15 years. (Kandilian told the Detroit Free Press in July that of the 4,000 cockroach species, only about a dozen are pests.) Why not choose a more conventional “pet”? Because “(m)ammals smell,” he said. (Missing from the Free Press story: details on the likely interesting initial conversation between Kyle and his mother when he asked if he could have 200,000 cockroaches in the house.)

--The Best of the International Press: In July, the governor of Gorontalo province in

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE --A 55-year-old woman in the Netherlands seemed to be experiencing orgasms emanating from her foot, she said, and Dr. Marcel Waldinger of Utrecht University (writing in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, online in June) produced a possible explanation. The applicable left foot nerve enters the spinal cord at about the same level as the vaginal nerve, Waldinger wrote, and the woman’s recent foot injury might have caused the nerves to cross. The woman reported “five or six” orgasms per day that felt exactly like “regular” orgasms and, she said, were making her feel terribly guilty and embarrassed. After treatment with a nerve anesthetic, she reported being orgasm-free (in the foot, at least) for eight months. --The intersection of West Gateway Boulevard and North Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach, Fla. (pop. 60,000), is nine lanes wide, busy even at 11 p.m. on Sunday night, as it was at that time in July when a 2-year-old girl darted across, a combination of good fortune and sometimes-rare Florida driver alertness allowing her safe arrival on the other side without a scratch. “It’s a miracle,” said Harry Scott, who witnessed it. “I’m telling you the truth.” Mom Kayla Campbell, 26, was charged with felony neglect, as she appeared “oblivious,” said police, to the child’s absence from home. --An unnamed restaurateur from Nagoya, Japan, has filed a lawsuit against an affiliate of the country’s largest organized crime syndicate, Yamaguchi-gumi, demanding a refund of “protection” money she had been paying for more than 12 years (in total, the equivalent of about $170,000). The affiliate, Kodo-kai, burned down a bar in 2010, killing people, in a similar protection arrangement that went bad, and the plaintiff said she, too, was threatened with arson when she decided to stop paying. According to an expert on Japanese “yakuza,” a relative of one of the victims of the 2010 fire may also sue Kodo-kai.

Indonesia decreed that female secretaries should be replaced immediately with males. He was responding to a recent excessive spate of extramarital affairs by male bureaucrats with their female secretaries. (“[O]ld women who are no longer attractive” could

also be hired, he said.)

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES

--(1) Gerard Streator, 47, pleaded guilty in June in Waukesha, Wis., County Court to public lewdness and placed on probation after his arrest last year of going through the motions of intercourse with a discarded couch on a public street. An off-duty police officer thought initially that he had caught a couple, but on closer inspection, he realized Streator (who was aroused) was alone. (2) The day before, in Ostersund, Sweden, a 35-year-old man was arrested after a surveillance camera revealed him to be the one who repeatedly punctured Per Edstrom’s bicycle’s tires and who that evening was seen sitting on the bicycle pleasuring himself.

INEXPLICABLE

--Tina Marie Garrison, 37, and her son Junior Lee Dillon, 18, of Preston, Minn., were charged in June with stealing almost $5,000 worth of gopher feet from the freezer of a gopher trapper in Granger, Minn., and selling them for the local offered bounty of $3 per pair. Garrison, Dillon, and the victimized trapper were friends, and it was not clear why the thinly populated gopher-foot market would not have deterred Garrison and Dillon. --Louann Giambattista, 55, a 33-year-veteran American Airlines flight attendant, filed a lawsuit against the company in July alleging that it had subjected her to baseless hassles because of co-workers’ accusations that, argued her attorney, were wrongly “making her out to be a nut.” One of the accusations was that she was “hiding rats in her underwear (and pantyhose) and sneaking them onto planes” based apparently on Giambattista’s hobby of raising pets at home. The airline has allegedly subjected her to enhanced security measures for more than a year, allegedly causing her post-traumatic stress disorder and “debilitating anxiety.”

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT

--In June, following his guilty plea in Corpus Christi, Texas, to possession of child pornography, Jose Salazar, 70, offered to perform public service to reduce the 12-year sentence a federal judge had handed him. Salazar said he “had a lot to offer society,” according to an Associated Press story, and could be “useful” in mentoring children. --At Atherstone, England’s, Twycross Zoo, a program is underway to try to teach quarter-ton giant tortoises to speed up. An extended outdoor pen had been built for Speedy (age 70), Tim, 40, and Shelly, 30, but that meant it took a longer time to round them up for bed at the end of the day. The Leicester Mercury reported in June that zoo officials were trying to use the lure of food to get the tortoises to significantly improve their way-under-1-mile-per-hour gait. --Actually, It Might Enhance the Experience: The British sex toy manufacturer Ann Summers issued a recall in June of a certain model of its popular Ultimate O Vibrator because of a problem with the electrical charger. The company said it was being cautious but that the risk of danger is low.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS

--(1) A 28-year-old man was accidentally killed in Shelby, N.C., in April. Police say he had trespassed on a salvage lot at 5 a.m. and was underneath a wrecked car trying to steal a cata-

lytic converter when the jack slipped, and the car fell on him. (2) A 42-year-old man was shot and wounded while on his front porch in Antioch, Calif., on Friday morning, June 28. He was treated and released, but then walked out on his porch the next morning and was again shot, this time fatally.

It’s subtle but interesting.” Interesting, indeed. Their set at World Café Live was short but sweet so I was left wanting to hear more. After previewing “Phoenix” online, I had the sense that this was going to sound very good live with a full band and I was right. The music is energetic and upbeat; the kind of music you’d want to crank up to top volume while driving. Roi is enthusiastic about his new band mates and new projects on the horizon. It’s evident that his creative juices are flowing and there’s a lot more music inside him that is waiting to be unleashed. In the meantime, RSP continue to play gigs locally and regionally. Roi says, “We have shows in New York coming up at Connolly’s Klub 45 in Times Square, Lit Lounge on the East Side and Arlene’s on the Lower East Side.” The day after the Philly show, Roi played two local shows – Saturday morning acoustically at the Easton Farmer’s Market and then also in the evening at Connexions Gallery in downtown Easton. Of Connexions, Roi says, “They are some of the first people I met when I moved here. Connexions Gallery is a small art gallery that really supports a lot of local artists, local musicians and they have this beautiful garden in the back and every summer they turn it into an art gallery/live music venue.” I believe I have a new stop on my never-ending quest for cool places to hear great live music! When I asked Roi if he’s looking to possibly play at next year’s Musikfest, he replied, “Sure. If they’ll have us, we’ll play. We’ll submit our stuff and see what happens…again.” Roi has submitted his music to ArtsQuest four years running but has yet to land a booking for the annual ten day festival. The fifth time, hopefully, will be the charm. He says, “We’re writing for a new album. We’re going to put out a new record eventually. We’ll probably have a live record coming out in between both. And, the live record will be the “Phoenix” album but with the Lehigh Valley line-up in that show because we’ve been playing so many shows. We just want to capture that moment. Our focus now is just putting on a really, really solid live show.”

The Local Beat sometimes takes me off the beaten path in the Lehigh Valley and sends me out of town in my search for Bands That Rock. That’s not necessarily a bad thing especially when you consider the fact that many times, the bands I’m chasing down are from right here in the Lehigh Valley. I took a road trip down to Philadelphia on Friday to World Café Live in University City for a live performance of Roi and the Secret People, an Easton-based quintet that plays original rock compositions from its two indie releases, 2008’s “Dog St.” and “Phoenix”, released online in April. Roi and the Secret People are Mike Roi on acoustic guitar and vocals, Randy Melick

on electric guitar, Dan DeChellis on keyboards, Glen Radomski on bass and Craig Martyn on drums and backing vocals. This performing line-up was assembled after Roi’s move from New York City to Easton. Originally from South Florida, Roi seems to be enjoying life in the Northeast as he has bounced around from Philly to New York to the Lehigh Valley. As he contemplated moving from the big city to the Lehigh Valley, the idea for “Phoenix” took hold. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Roi’s journey was a new beginning for him. I spoke to Roi and the band just before they took the stage for their WCL gig. “Phoenix was put together before I moved here”, says Roi. “It was while I was living in New York. These guys came in after it was finished. There were only two other people besides me. We put it together really quickly – wrote it in two weeks and recorded it in about eight days.” With two completed albums under his belt, Roi sought to establish a permanent line-up. He hooked up with guitarist, Randy Melick, through an ad in Craigslist. Roi says, “We just started auditioning people to put a band together to actually perform the album when it comes out which is going to be in the beginning of October. It’ll be a hard release. It’ll be out in the stores and on iTunes. We’ve just been playing out live representing the Lehigh Valley, New York City, Philadelphia, and all parts west, east, north and south.” On how the new band members approach playing “Phoenix” live, guitarist Randy Melick says, “We put our own little takes into it. We have a structure to work with and we bring our own little nuances to each part and just give it some dynamics where it really comes alive.” Craig Martyn says, “I bring the harder edge to the band drum-wise with my style of drumming.” Mike Roi’s musical influences include Tom Petty and RSP keyboardist, Dan DeChellis, known locally for the Dan DeChellis Jazz Trio, echoes Roi when it comes to praising Petty and The Heartbreakers. “I’m with Mike on the Tom Petty thing. I’m really just using roots sounds - organ, Fender Rhodes, pianos. Benmont Tench (The Heartbreakers keyboardist) is a huge influence.” He adds, “It’s fun working with Randy, too, because we both sort of have this way of bouncing back and forth and staying out of each other’s way. One of us might be playing textures and one might be doing sort of a more melodic thing and we sort of flip back and forth and I think that’s what made The Heartbreakers music so interesting because you have Mike Campbell and those guys so it’s a bit of a dance.

PLOT: After entry-level employee Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) is fired by his billionaire tech genius boss Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman) he takes his revenge by taking his friends out for a wild night on the town, all charged to his company credit card, to the tune of $16,000. Threatened with jail, Adam is instead talked into become a mole for Wyatt in an even bigger tech company owned by the paternal Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), formerly Wyatt’s mentor. With the promise of a huge payday and a bright future, Adam becomes the perfect corporate spy, but when he falls for one of Goddard’s star employees (Amber Heard) he begins to realize he’s a pawn in a bigger game. REVIEW: If that plot outline sounds familiar, that’s only because it is. Basically, PARANOIA is like a serious version of Tony Gilroy’s DUPLICTY, only minus any of the wit, glamour or excitement. Heck, DUPLICTY wasn’t even all that great of a movie to begin with, so you can only imagine how dull PARANOIA must be.

I know Liam Hemsworth is suddenly a big heartthrob after THE HUNGER GAMES, and while he’s fine in certain kinds of roles, he’s nowhere near seasoned, or even charismatic enough to pull off this kind of part. He’s supposed to be playing this smooth-talking genius, but Hemsworth is as boring as can be. They needed someone that’s a live wire (Bradley Cooper in LIMITLESS is a good example of the energy this needed) but Hemsworth doesn’t seem capable of bringing any kind of excitement to the part. Even his (tame) love scenes with the vivacious Amber Heard (mostly wasted as window-dressing) come off as stale. Hemsworth is just totally unsuited to the part, and only seems to have been cast to bring in teenage girls, meaning that he takes off his shirt every ten minutes of so to show off his abs. Maybe I’m being too hard on Hemsworth though. To be fair, even with a more charismatic lead PARANOIA probably still would have laid an egg. Robert Luketic, who did a relatively good job with 21, directs this like a movie-of-the week, with no imagination or flair. At just under two hours, PARANOIA feels endless, and even worse, is so predictable that even if you haven’t seen the trailers which give away the entire plot, you should be able to more or less know where this is going within the first ten minutes. Really, the only reasons to see PARANOIA are Oldman and Ford. Both seem to be having a grand old time, with Oldman playing to type, and Ford against it (and looking cool with a shaved head and glasses). There’s one scene that almost makes PARANOIA worth watching, and that’s an icy encounter between Oldman and Ford where the two toy with each other, while Hemsworth looks on placidly. Both are entertaining, but it seems like a cruel joke to cast these two icons in a movie and then make them play second (and third) banana to Hemsworth. I also enjoyed seeing Richard Dreyfuss back on the big screen as Hemsworth’s sickly dad, although it’s hard to buy them as father and son. They barely look like they belong on the same planet (with the strapping Hemsworth being a good foot taller than Dreyfuss) much less the same family (mom must have been an Amazon). It’s too bad PARANOIA ended up being such a lame movie, as it actually would have been quite nice to close out the summer with a smart, entertaining thriller. Too bad PARANOIA is neither smart, nor entertaining, Ford and Oldman’s contributions notwithstanding. Skip it.

Even though I’m not fully sold on this band yet, I did enjoy rocking out to this album. With heavy riffs, melodic choruses and exceptional production value, it held my interest from start to finish. Even though some fans consider this a departure from their earlier work, it still has enough metal elements to keep the pickiest fan entertained. So are they metal’s second coming? Probably not…but they aren’t at the bottom of the barrel either.

Is Asking Alexandria the second coming of metal? One would assume that after all the publicity and hype surrounding this young band from North Yorkshire, England. This band has undergone more scrutiny in their five years of existence than most bands face in their entire career. Asking Alexandria was founded by guitarist Ben Bruce in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They released one album, The Irony of Your Perfection, before breaking up. In 2008, Bruce moved back to the UK, leaving all his former band mates behind. He began searching for a new lineup for his band. Bruce also wanted to make known that the old Asking Alexandria is totally different from the new incarnation and even though they share the same name, they should be considered two separate bands. With a line up solidified, minus a few changes, Asking Alexandria went on to record their debut album, Stand Up and Scream. With their debut, they built a pretty substantial following in the “metalcore” community. Two years later they released their sophomore album, Reckless & Relentless. Despite the positive reviews, some criticized the use of electronic instruments. Still, this was probably their heaviest album to date. It is said that frontman Danny Worsnop’s heavy alcohol and drug abuse effected his ability to hit the high notes that he was once able to hit. As a result, his voice is substantially deeper and coarser on the second album than it was on their debut. After successfully completing rehab, Worsnop tore a vocal cord and had to undergo therapy in order to repair it. This problem may have led to the change in vocal style evident in the band’s latest effort, From Death to Destiny. I was always a little skeptical of this band and never really bought in to all the hype surrounding them. With that said, I tried to keep an open mind when listening and reviewing their new album. From Death to Destiny opens up with a pretty kick-ass synthesizer intro on “Don’t Pray For Me.” However, the song kind of derails itself towards the end with a strange orchestral arrangement that doesn’t really fit. “Killing You” is a straight-forward, heavy song with an extremely catchy chorus. Worsnop shows off his healed vocal cord in the next track, “The Death of Me,” which has an accompanying music video out now. The band also shot a live video for “Run Free,” which is one of my favorites from the album. I like how it begins heavy, gets melodic during the chorus, then changes tempo completely at the end. “Believe” is one of the more uplifting songs with the chorus, “we can make a different team / just close your eyes and take my hand my dear / just hold your breath and let me dry your tears / all you gotta do is believe.” “Moving On” is the album’s power ballad, with a striking similarity to something that Skid Row would have cranked out 30 years ago. This would not be an unusual statement to make because Skid Row is cited as one of the band’s biggest influences. I thought it was cool that the last word in the song is the title of the next track, “The Road.” One of the stand-out tracks

For over 30 years, the Touchstone Theatre has proudly created original theatre. Founded in 1981, this unique acting ensemble is dedicated to presenting theatre as a vital art form. The core of their artistic process is the actors’ involvement in the entire production, from playwriting to stage setup to performance. The theatre boasts an interesting history. Founders Bill and Bridget George and Lorraine Zeller formed a group that use movement-based performances much like the improvisational street troupes of the 1970’s. Touchstone originally started as a professional mime group, offering non-verbal and multi cultural performances with simple sets and lighting. Their unique artistic philosophy brought an interesting form of theater to local neighborhoods. Actors used the universal language of gestures and images rather than words. As the ensemble evolved, it began touring to traditional audiences regionally, nationally and internationally. In 1987, with community support, the company renovated an abandoned 19th century firehouse, which was transformed into an intimate 75-seat theatre located in Bethlehem’s South Side. Touchstone knows that theater has the ability to be a powerful community building tool. The theatre has always strived to use creative drama that weaves stories and history of the Lehigh Valley and beyond. It’s goal is to craft opportunities for people to

explore new and old ideas, and to nurture the ability to play and create. The theatre is involved with collaborations such as an Adaptation of Greek Myths, the Steel Festival, the Don Quixote Project, the Lehigh Valley Black African Heritage History Project and A Resting Place, a civil war play. They have a full season of adult and children’s productions, which this year includes: Darwinni: the Comeuppance of Man and the everpopular Christmas City Follies. In addition, Touchstone offers exciting educational programs that inspire students to discover their own creative expression, such as the Young Playwright’s Lab and the Camp Touchstone and Teen Ensemble. Touchstone Theatre is located at 321 E. 4th Street in Bethlehem, PA. All seats have an excellent view of the stage. Audiences are invited to relax in Touchstone’s café before a show or during intermission. The theatre also has an art gallery in the mezzanine that regularly exhibits local artists’ work. Touchstone Theatre thrives on the skill and creativity of its volunteers. From fund raisers to stage crews to board members, they welcome volunteers who are looking for a creative outlet. Handy with lighting or costumes? Have a knack for set design? Interested in being café assistant or baker? Contact Touchstone! Delicious.

the classic old cooking shows to the more drama filled reality type of programming championed by Gordan Ramsay with shows like Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares (which recently filmed an episode this summer at Bella Luna in Easton). No one anymore suffers lack of access to information about food, what to eat, how to buy it, and how to make it into something actually delicious.

“It might be appealing to those people who don’t eat meat because they don’t want to kill animals,” said my brother when I told him about the in vitro burger. Maybe, but as someone who rarely eats meat, I still cannot really picture myself happily sinking my teeth into an in-vitro burger anytime soon, not least because of the approximate cost for these two burgers, which were made in the UK, was $350,000 American.

At the moment the Valley boasts several farmer’s markets that between them are pretty much open every day of the week including the ever popular Easton Farmer’s Market, Saucon Valley’s Farmer’s Market, Bethlehem Farmer’s Market, and this year in Bethlehem, the former Steel Stack’s Farmer’s Market reopened as the Art District Farmer’s Market, giving Bethlehem residents a local weekend option.

In the Lehigh Valley, no similarly earth shaking culinary events have been recently experienced by this correspondent, unless of course, you count what was less corn on the cob and more journey to the center of your mind, fare from Aw Shucks at Musikfest. But Musikfest has wrapped til next year and the vibrant amber window is about to shut on this great American mainstay of summer food, so people who eat, which is everyone, must seek other pastures.

All of this is to say that that it is not bad to eat here, with one exception, why are there not more coffee houses? As the Valley is home to several colleges and universities one would think that there would be a glut of places to spend a few hours editing the next great novel of the 21st century.

“You could probably think about it as eating a giant tumor” said my friend when informed that last week saw a world’s first: two burgers grown not in a cow, but in a lab from the harvested stem-cells of a cow were prepared and eaten.

For those who often eat out, the Lehigh Valley, which was once a desert of greasy spoons and sports bars has expanded in variety at all price points. The addition of The Promenade Shops alone brought an eclectic mix of fancier Asian and health conscious eateries. Meanwhile, two of my favorites, Cali Burrito and Full of Crepe fill more casual Valley eaters. Additionally old favorites such as The Brew Works in Bethlehem and Porter’s Pub in Easton have sizeable and inventive menu items including Porter’s beer float that answers one of life’s great questions: should I order beer or dessert?

Now, I don’t want to sound too much like a yuppie since there is a warm and secure place in my heart for greasy spoons and sports bars. I’m guaranteed to get a far better burger than whoever was unlucky enough to choke down those two in-vitro burgers, reportedly dry and bland (for comparison, the Mind Freak Burger at Billy’s Downtown Dinner melts in a mix of meat juice and cheese goo and is aptly named) nonetheless you can’t really open your laptop at Billy’s sprawl out folders and get to work. So as an open request to the Lehigh Valley, please give me a delicious place to eat and drink with free Wi-Fi, massive tables and no pushy staff. I promise to eat there regularly.

PAGE 25

And just to be clear, I do not mean Starbucks. If I really wanted over-priced, artificially flavored, cattle-derived foodstuffs, I would look more deeply into those tumor burgers.

PAGE 21

Farmer’s markets make further booms in the food business. Any television or laptop now brings people instant access to a myriad of programming centered around food, from

ZODIAC

ARIES (3/21 – 4/19) Starting something new or committing to anything uncertain just isn’t favored by the stars now. But you can definitely get back in the swing of things over the next couple of days. Go with what (or is that who?) sparks your enthusiasm now; you’ve got a winning way about you. But around Thursday and Friday, it’s all about things that’ll last. Don’t get too heated about what could be a flash in the pan, and if you say it, be sure you mean it. You can get back into the realm of the hypothetical (and the flirtatious!) on Saturday evening and Sunday. TAURUS (4/20 – 5/20) A little heartache is eased by confiding in a friend, or perhaps you’re the listening ear. And while your sign definitely knows you can’t hurry love, you’re nonetheless inclined to rush into something in the realm of romance. Resist-and think about why it is you’re so tempted. Thursday and Friday are utterly lovely for you, and some hot passion is a distinct possibility -- or maybe more like a probability. A splurge of a date goes great now. This weekend, while excellent for talking things over, may not be the time to make long-term plans.

GEMINI (5/21 – 6/21) You might be looking at life through an ambient haze, and it’s not necessarily a rose-colored one. Don’t get blue about a difficulty or misunderstanding, though; the it will offer a new point of view and many opportunities for improvement. Use those awesome communication skills! Thursday and Friday are perfect for taking care of business -- get work and errands squared away so you can take advantage of some much more social energy this weekend. You’ll love a party, and the outdoors beckons -- why not combine the two? CANCER (6/22 – 7/22) An unknown entity is absolutely worth a chance. Don’t be afraid -- do a little investigating! Then over the next couple of days, your personal past is newly relevant. This doesn’t mean you should dwell on it, but if a certain situation reminds you of something, stop and think. What happened last time around? And starting Thursday, you’re ready to get outside, get out of your shell and have some fun! When the weekend rolls around, you might even be ready for a little walk on the wild side. Why not? Enjoy the heat!

Page 26

LEO (7/23 - 8/22) Feelings and finances may be linked in a way that’s not very comfortable. Don’t let money talk too loud. Then the more information you can gather, the more interesting life gets. Follow-through is key around Thursday and Friday, though, as is admitting when you don’t know. And you’re both smart and fun when the weekend comes, with friends old and new loving your company and conversation. There could be something super in the more-than-friends department, too! VIRGO (8/23 - 9/22) Patience! Hard work and your signature attention to detail have much more effect over the next couple of days -- both at work, and in the realm of relationships. When it comes to the interpersonal stuff, be willing to meet ‘em halfway. Then a little change gives life a lot more oomph around Friday or Saturday. Try or taste or get a view of something new. And the stars are leaving the weekend up to you. Concentrate on making it good and it will be!

LIBRA (9/23 - 10/22) Be light of heart and don’t take life -- or work -- too seriously. But do (seriously) watch it when it comes to finances, especially if someone else is involved. What seems like a simple arrangement may require a lot more negotiation. But meetings of the minds of all kinds are a lot easier starting Thursday, and the stars are emphasizing the romantic now! In any type of relationship, your thoughtfulness, interest in listening and way with sharing make things sweet indeed, all through the weekend.

SCORPIO (10/23 - 11/21) Reveal a hidden talent to your sweetheart or someone you’ve been flirting with, and watch their interest rise. Taking a practical approach to love isn’t very romantic, but it works. Cast your net wide if you’re doing online dating, and take the next step if you’re already coupled up. Those in the latter category could butt heads with their partner at the end of the week, but kissing and making up is pretty sweet. Singletons, meanwhile, are bold -- and utterly beautiful to the right person. This weekend, rein it in and play the game of love conservatively.

Charles Chrin Community Ctr 4100 Green Pond Rd

SAGITTARIUS (11/22 - 12/21) What someone’s saying should really resonate. Make time to talk more about it, and see where the conversation takes you. Wednesday, you should be going some fun places -- you’ll love a game, getting outside or taking a mini-adventure now. At the end of the workweek, though, give someone else a hand at work or in your free time (or -- bonus points -both). The weekend’s busy, but you’ll be happiest in the moments you can find quiet and get more in-depth, whether with a book, a certain someone or just staring at the stars.

Big Daddy’s Wagon Wheel Tavern Route 313 & Sternersmill Rd. 215-536-9989 Wednesdays: Scott & Wade

CAPRICORN (12/22 - 1/19) Some free-form thinking, doing something spontaneous and reaching out will get you results that planning, testing and hunkering down can’t. You can get back to your regularly scheduled programming, when practicality pays and concentration conquers. But plan to really enjoy your time off, and schedule some fun on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Whether it’s an elaborate event or simple good times, take a timely break from duty now. On Sunday, it’s up to you to figure out what someone’s really saying. AQUARIUS (1/20 - 2/18) The least romantic day this week offers an opportunity for you to end a cycle. Then a new one can begin with a spark of electricity on Wednesday. A discovery you make about your heart now is the key -- or at least one in the set of keys -- to your future romantic path. If your love life seems a little dull at the end of the workweek, well, you’re good at stirring things up. Romance can be found in the funniest places now. And this weekend? Yowza! You’re burning hot. Work it. PISCES (2/19 - 3/20) Everybody’s loving you, if the stars have their say! Share your thoughts and your appreciation, and make their day. Then there’s something hidden just for you, and you’re just the one to figure it out. Watch for something that doesn’t add up. One plus one is a very sweet equation around Thursday, Friday and Saturday, when summer lovin’ awaits. Make a move instead of waiting! You don’t have to get too specific about it. But on Sunday, keep your moves minimal. Relaxing’s better than racing around.

WITH the Lyrical Genius

THE VALLEY BEAT JULY 31, 2013

THE VALLEY BEAT INDUSTRY MONDAYS

By: Nick Gaskins

Q) What sets you apart from other female hip hop artists such as Kreyshawn and Chanel West Coast? A) I’m not just doing music to do music, I do it with a movement. The movement has a purpose, it’s called Team Genius. Even imagewise the whole package I’m bringing with my team is just completely different than anything the game has ever seen. I’m not just the typical female rapper, this is authentic and real, it’s just me. Not just lyrically, we try to push a message through the music as well as show people our movement and what we’re doing out here on the streets. We’re college students, the movement is about having a goal in life and pursuing it, it’s very positive and productive. It’s about being a genius in whatever way you happen to be a genius. My way just happens to be being a rapper so I try to express that through the music to the best of my ability. Q) How do you prepare for a show, do you have any special pre-game ritual before you go out

there? A) Definitely gotta get hype, most of the time if I’m not listenin’ to songs in the car I’m freestylin’. I almost always end up freestylin’ and just vibin’, before the show, tryin’ to get that hip-hop vibe going you know what I’m sayin’? Me and Team Genius, we’re always tryin’ to think of what we’re gonna do, how we’re gonna interact with the crowd. Just try to feel out the crowd and figure out the best way to get them involved. Q) What was it like opening up for A$AP Rocky in April? A) It was exciting, a major learning experience. Just to see a show on that scale, it was sold out, 1800 people and a lot of them were my peers from college and they were supporting me so it felt good. The whole team grew from the experience. Like how do you rock a crowd of 1800 people when they’re waiting for someone else? It definitely helped me develop my showmanship as an artist, like the music is there and speaks for itself but that show taught me how to bring in the people. Watching A$AP do his thing and watch him get the crowd involved was also great learning experience. Q) What can your fans expects from your new EP “Party In My Dorm Room “when it drops this fall? A) You can expect the best of both worlds, that’s what Team Genius is about, the mixture of the college student with the inner city street kid. You’re gonna hear a little bit of both. The college lifestyle, you know party in my dorm room and the MC part of being in college, like a blend of a lot of different stuff. It’s gonna tell a story that I think everybody can relate to. It’s about workin’ hard and grindin’ but havin’ fun while you do it. That’s the whole point of party in my dorm room, you’re in college but your partyin’ ya know, it’s a metaphor in itself. It’s about doin’ what you gotta do but havin’ a ball while you do it.

MT. POCONO, PA- High school basketball star Mia Waring, 22 is a woman of many talents. After earning a basketball scholarship to East Stroudsburg University, Waring decided to focus on her studies, majoring in Film and Media Communications and maintaining a 3.8 GPA. But when she’s not tearing up the court or acing her exams, she’s busy dropping tracks as “LG” the Lyrical Genius. After dropping two mixtapes, opening concerts for rap stars such as Ghostface, Sheek Louch, Twista, and A$AP Rocky; and winning nothing less than 2nd place in talent shows and showcases across the tri-state area, LG was dubbed the “Hottest Female Artist in Philly”. We sat down with LG in anticipation of her concert with Mobb Deep on Saturday, August 24 at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, to learn more about the prodigious MC and her rise to the top.

ALL AMERICAN BODY & MIND

City meets Country A city boy wanted to marry a country girl. She insists that he has to ask her father for her hand in marriage. So off he goes to their farm to ask her father. “I want to marry your daughter”. “Well, my boy you will have to prove to me that you are a man worthy of my daughter.” “I’ll do anything for my love” says the young man. “You see that cow out in the pasture? Well go screw it.” A little puzzled the boy says, “OK, anything for my love” On his return of doing his deed, he asks, “Now can I marry your daughter?” “Nope.” says the father, “See that goat over yonder? Well, Go screw it.” Again the boy obliges and returns saying, “Now can I marry your daughter?” “Nope. Not yet -one more thing. See that pig in the sty? Well go to it.” Once again he obliges and returns. This time the farmer is amazed at seeing this boy doing these deeds just to marry his daughter. So the father finally tells the boy, “Now you can marry my daughter.” To which the boy replies, “SCREW YOUR DAUGHTER, HOW MUCH YOU WANT FOR THAT PIG?” Just Fred A local law enforcement officer stopped a car for traveling faster than the posted speed limit. Since he was in a good mood that day he decided to give the poor fellow a break and write him out a warning instead of a ticket. So, he asks the man his name.” Fred” he replies. “Fred what?” the officer asks. “Just Fred” the man responds. When the officer presses him for a last name, the man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it. The officer thinks he has a nutcase on his hands but plays along with it. “Tell me Fred, how did you lose your last name?” The man replies... “It’s a long story so stay with me. I was born Fred Dingaling. I know, funny last name. The kids used to tease me all the time. So I stayed to myself. I studied hard and got good grades. When I got older I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, finally got my degree so I was Fred Dingaling, MD. After a while I got bored being a doctor so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream. Got all the way through school, got my degree so I was now Fred Dingaling MD DDS. Got bored doing dentistry so I started fooling around with my assistant. She gave me VD. So, I was Fred Dingaling MD DDS with VD. Well, the ADA found out about the VD so they took away my DDS so I was Fred Dingaling MD with VD. Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Dingaling with VD. Then the VD took away my dingaling so now I’m just Fred.” The officer let him go without even a warning. :-)

Annual Checkup An 80-year old man was having his annual check-up and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. “I’ve never been better!” he boasted. “I’ve got an eighteen year old bride who’s pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?” The doctor considered this for a moment, then said, “Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day, he went out in a bit of a hurry, and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun.” The doctor continued, “So he was in the woods, and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle. And do you know what happened?” the doctor queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied, “No.” The doctor continued, “The bear dropped dead in front of him!” “That’s impossible!” exclaimed the old man. “Someone else must have shot that bear.” “That’s kind of what I’m getting at,” replied the doctor.
