Yestival in Camden, NJ / Musikfest in Bethlehem If you’re feeling festive, then the upcoming weekend and week ahead are tailor-made for you! Let the “Fest-ing” begin! While Bethlehem will reverberate with the musical strains of hundreds of different bands and performers over the course of the 10-day mega-festival known as Musikfest that begins Friday, there is a 1-day festival taking place on the banks of the Delaware River directly across from Philadelphia at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ this Saturday, August 3. Yestival is a grand experiment with the prog-faithful greater Philadelphia area serving as the proving ground for possible future Yestivals in other markets. The Camden Waterfront and Philadelphia skyline will serve as dramatic backdrops for this incredible assemblage of classic rock talent. In addition to headliners Yes, Yestival features Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy, Montreal-based Genesis tribute band The Musical Box, LA-based jazz prog rock fusion band Volto! - featuring Tool drummer, Danny Carey, Sound of Contact, a hard prog-rock band featuring Simon Collins, son of Phil Collins, on drums and vocals and Renaissance featuring the lovely and talented Annie Haslam on vocals. Renaissance continues to tour in support of their latest record, Grandine il Vento, released in June, despite suffering a major tragedy in November with the death of longtime guitarist/ composer Michael Dunford. Dunford, upon returning to England after a North American tour, suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage at his home in Surrey and passed away on November

Haslam, born in England and now living in Bucks County, has had her own health challenges. She is a breast cancer survivor after being diagnosed in 1993 and continues to recuperate from a collapsed vertebra caused by the onset of osteoporosis that necessitates her wearing a specially constructed back brace which allows her to perform while standing.

There is still a lot of fight and music left in this sweet songstress. She is determined not to let any physical limitations get in the way of doing what she loves. That includes painting works of art using oil and canvas. The merchandise booths at Yestival will be adorned by original works of art not only from Haslam but also from quintessential progressive rock artist, Roger Dean, famous for his album cover fantasy artwork for bands like Yes, Asia and Uriah Heep. My wife and I had the good fortune to meet Roger Dean while on the Cruise to the Edge where he personally autographed a calendar of prints for us on our honeymoon and we look forward to seeing
him again at Yestival. Renaissance, trying to fill the void at guitar due to Dunford’s passing, has recruited guitarist, Ryche Chlanda, formerly of Nektar and Fireballet. Back up here in Bethlehem, Musikfest celebrates 30 years of exquisitely diverse and for the most part – free - musical entertainment at a variety of venues on both the north and south sides. I’ve logged a lot of miles over the years at the Fest and this year will be no different. I anticipate crossing the Hill to Hill, Fahy and Minsi Trail Bridges multiple times over the duration of the festival with mug in hand.
I’m looking forward to seeing some of these bands and other local favorites as well as the gated classic rock shows at the Sands Steel Stage. Frampton’s Guitar Circus with Peter Frampton, B.B. PLOT: Years after the events of X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, Logan (Hugh Jackman) lives as a vagrant in Alaska, haunted by visions of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). REVIEW: Good news everyone. THE WOLVERINE- for all of it’s years of production and false starts- is not only finally here, but it’s also pretty damn good! This time out, everyone involved has obviously put some real effort into making a solo Wolverine movie that stands apart from the rest of the franchise, and gives the character his due.

Hugh Jackman is his usual iconic self as Logan/Wolverine, although this time out he looks even more shredded than usual, with his physique approaching eighties-era Stallone levels at times. Having a little more time dedicated to character building this time out, and allowing Wolverine time to brood over killing Jean Grey, Jackman arguably gives his best Wolverine performance to date. In particular, he seems to relish the tougher dialogue he’s given here (with an epic f-bomb towards the end of the movie), and despite the PG-13 rating, this is definitely the darkest film of the franchise, and the closest to a full-on R-rated Wolverine movie that we’re ever likely to get. In a nice touch of authenticity, the supporting cast is mostly filled with Japanese actors, including Japanese star Hiroyuki Sanada (who once starred with Michelle Yeoh in a great HK action flick called ROYAL WARRIORS), and models Tao Okamoto and a scene-stealing Rila Fukushima getting the meatiest, most important parts. Former Bond villain, the Korean Will Yun Lee, is on board as one of the (many) antagonists, with Svetlana Khodchenkova rounding out the cast as the sexy, seductive Viper, a toxicologist in the employ of Yashida. Here and there, Mangold throws in the occasional reference to classic Japanese cinema, with a few nods to Akira Kurosawa, in particular Logan’s early, YOJIMBO-like, slovenly appearance (with him even being called a Ronin- just like Toshiro Mifune’s character was in that classic). It’s a nice touch, and gives the film an interesting, unique flavor, as does the score by Marco Beltrami. Mangold’s definitely no hack, having directed COPLAND, WALK THE LINE and the underrated 3:10 TO YUMA remake, and he does a really good job with THE WOLVERINE, to the extent that if they do another solo adventure for the character, it would be nice to see him back in the director’s chair. However, before that happens we’ve got the epic DAYS OF FUTURE PAST on it’s way, and if you want a taste of what’s in store for next summer, you’d be well advised to stay through the credits. Even without that icing on the cake, THE WOLVERINE is a really solid addition to the franchise, and a nice solo action vehicle for Jackman. It’s definitely NOT trying to be X-MEN 4 (despite following the chronology set by the third) and manages to be it’s own thing. I liked it a lot, and I’m confident most of the fans will feel the same way.

That’s badass… “Yea, I don’t know if we’re gonna do this anymore. It’s pretty much I think the last time. Once this 25th anniversary tour is done, I gotta concentrate on other stuff. This is cool and it’s always a lot of fun having Doyle on stage. But after this, I think it’s time to move on.” Wow, so for fans this is the last time they’ll see you guys all together… “I think so, probably. I mean there is talk of doing a couple of legacy shows in Europe, but that’s not here in The States.” You guys will be kicking off your US dates at the Sands Event Center on August 13. Being a NJ native, like myself, is playing for an east coast audience different than anywhere else? “Each place has its own vibe. LA is a little different than New York. But I have to say, America in general, is much different than Europe. Touring is a pain the ass over there. Here in America you have just crazy, massive, violent pits. And in Europe, they’re just starting to get pits. This last time we were in Sweden at Metaltown, there were actually pits going on. It was great. (laughs) We felt at home.”
Last week I got the opportunity to do a phone interview with punk legend Glenn Danzig. The following is an excerpt from our chat. How’s the 25th anniversary tour going so far? “It’s pretty crazy; I’m actually leaving for Europe in a couple days” Who had the idea for the 25th anniversary tour? “Uhhh…Me. (laughs) I thought it was a cool idea. We were gonna do something with (Rick) Rubin but I don’t know if he has a real label anymore. So I just decided to do it on my own, without him.” Sometimes you just gotta do it yourself… “Yea, I don’t wait for people, you know.” (Laughs)
It’s awesome that Doyle’s back on tour with you. Who are some of the other special guests that will be joining you on stage? Ummmm….Doyle. (laughs) It’s basically Danzig comes out…it’s me, Tommy, Victor on guitar, Johnny Kelly on drums and Steve Zing on bass. And then Doyle comes out later, and we just fly into a Misfits set.
You’re last release was in 2010…I read that you guys are gonna be working on new stuff when the tour ends. Is this still the plan? “Yea. I’ve got my covers record about to come out. I am doing a new deal with distribution so hopefully it will come out before Christmas. And then, yea, we’ve already started working on new Danzig stuff.”
You been in the scene for quite a while, I’m sure you’ve seen some changes in the industry. Punk music is a little bit different than it was back in the day. Do you like the way it’s going? “No, (laughs) there is no punk music anymore. The bands that played it back in the day did a great job, but the newer bands that call themselves punk…they’re not punk. They don’t have the attitude. It’s like somebody’s idea of punk.” I read that you’ve been doing martial arts for a quite a while now. Are you a fan of MMA? Do you watch UFC? “Yea, I started doing Muy Thai back in the late 80’s and then I switched to Jeet Kung Do probably in ’92. I’m not a big fan of the UFC, but I like Vitor Belfort. I’ve seen some JKD principles in there.” I know you won’t have much time before your show at Sands, but if you’d like to stop by and make a surprise visit at Hammer Training and Fitness in Allentown, I’m sure the guys would love to have you out there. “Actually a friend of mine does the grappling stuff and he actually took me out to meet Gene Lebel. I got him to sign one of my old Gene Lebel books from the 60s. He was a really cool guy.” If you weren’t a rock star, you’d be what right now? “Uh…dead. (laughs)” Awesome man, good luck with the rest of your tour, thanks for calling in... It was a pleasure to talk to you. “Thanks man.” Danzig’s 25th Anniversary tour will be at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center on August 13th. You have a couple of weeks in between the tour. Are you at home relaxing now? “No. (laughs) I’ve been crazy working. I run about five different companies, so I’m always busy.”
Did you guys plan to kick off your US tour in Bethlehem, or is that just how it worked out? “That’s just how it worked out. I know that we played Allentown a while ago, but I don’t think I played Bethlehem since the Misfits. I think it was called the 4th Street Saloon. We played two nights and did two sets a night.”
Any time frame? “Nah, you know how I am. When it’s done, it’s done.”

When Avenged Sevenfold takes to the Musikfest Sands Steel Stage on Aug. 11, there will be fireworks on stage and above as the band helps bring the festival to a thunderous close.

The Avenged Sevenfold concert at Musikfest is one of only a handful of dates the group is performing this summer before embarking on a major U.S. tour in the fall. The band, which toured the world nonstop in 2010-11, has achieved Diamond, Platinum and Gold awards for album sales in nearly a dozen countries and sold out arenas the world over while headlining some of the world’s biggest and most prestigious music festivals. The group achieved worldwide success with its platinum 2005 breakthrough City Of Evil, which featured the wildly popular single “Bat Country.” In 2007, Avenged Sevenfold’s self-titled album debuted at Number One on the Billboard Alternative, Hard and Rock charts, and Number Four on the Billboard Top 200 album charts while spawning the singles “Almost Easy,”“Afterlife” and “Scream.” In 2012, the band also made an unprecedented appearance as characters in the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 video game, which went on to become the biggest selling video game of all time and featured the group’s song, “Carry On.” Opening the Avenged Sevenfold concert are Fight or Flight and Mindset Evolution. “As a musician, he has a killer insight into music and he knows how to get a lot of musicians together. He has the most drive of anyone I’ve worked with and it’s become more like a family in the band. ” says Dan Vosk when referring to his friend and bandmate Mike Scala who (with his band) is set to perform at Musikfest in August. I’m not immediately convinced, however after speaking to the Brooklyn native who grew up loving Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana in a family that was unable afford music lessons, but has since toured 13 countries 150 cities and played the world’s first concert off Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand, I start to get the idea.
I found a drummer and then I ended up finding my sax player, Marcus Miller, on the street. Now Dan and Marcus are some of my best friends. I look for good people before I look for good musicians. Could you elaborate on what you mean by similar views and goals? I wanted to create something that could make a positive impact on people’s lives in a positive way; like when you’re happy or sad what’s the first thing that you do? You go and listen to some music that makes you think of a happier time. And the other side of that is having a hands-on impact on people’s lives. I really want to make a difference on a big scale and help kids that are in need and give them opportunities that I never had. So I wanted to find people who could embrace those goals through music.
How did you get into music? Music was a big part of my upbringing, but I was a black sheep since I was the only part of my family that ended up playing something. My family, we couldn’t afford lessons or anything. My mom How would you describe your music? was a single mom and there were three of us. Originally from Long Island, Hurwich has an art background that includes a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City, and a stint as Art Director of Tower Records’ Lincoln Center store. She admits that she was the black sheep of the family, “My mother would have loved for me to be an art teacher.” She got her first tattoo at 27, then learned tattooing as an apprentice, taught by Denise De La Cerda. “The only way to learn properly is to study by apprenticeship. You
Hurwich admits that tattooing is still a male-dominated profession. “But female tattooists are here to stay!” When asked if there is any truth to the ‘tat addiction’ theory, her answer is yes. “Once a person gets over

and bamboo on the counter adds to the spiritual and welcoming feel. The shop presently has two tattooing chairs, and they’ll be adding a third in the near future.
Her specialties include realistic designs, portraits of people and animals, and what she describes as ‘her interpretation of Asian art.’ Ninety percent of her work is custom, but she does have a Flash display in the shop of various designs. Body art is a permanent mark and she likes to treat it with the reverence it deserves. Occasionally, a customer wants a tattoo that Hurwich thinks they’ll regret. “If someone is conflicted, or waffling, I’ll say go home and think about it,” she says. “I’m not a subtle individual. I’ll diplomatically suggest and either guide them in another direction or give them new perspective. I’ll ask what are your reasons for wanting this? And if they convince me, I’ll do it. After all, this is customer service business.”
