Kitchen Design Tricks:

How to Make Your Kitchen Look and Feel Bigger Over the last few decades, kitchens are now often multifunctional places and, as such, places that we pride ourselves on. Though we may all wish for a huge open-plan kitchen with all the kitchen storage space our hearts desire, that is rarely what we have at our disposal. As a room used for so many essential purposes, keeping the kitchen clean and comfortable can often feel like an impossible task. Here, we offer up some kitchen design tricks into optimising your kitchen so that it looks and feels more organised and spacious. Colours Colours, of course, have an enormous impact on our perception. They dictate how we perceive the shape and ambience of a space. For this reason, kitchen colour schemes frequently use bright, neutral colours like whites and greys, and pastel shades. A kitchen shouldn’t have too many varying shades. A kitchen with one predominant light colour, or a few of a similar shade, will feel open and expansive. Neutral colours don’t clash with each other but blend together, erasing visual boundaries and making a space feel bigger and less enclosing.

4

Lighting There is no point in a wellorganised kitchen if it is lacking sufficient light. A well-lit small kitchen can look more comfortable and welcoming than a huge kitchen if it is poorly illuminated. Natural lighting is vital. It makes you feel connected to the outside and makes the room feel freer. You can make the most of any windows you do have by removing obstacles and making them the centrepiece. Along with natural light, a good overall electric lighting system is a necessity for those late nights spent cooking. Ceiling lighting systems like recessed LED lights or track lights provide optimum illumination in the centre of your kitchen. Storage You want your kitchen to be a smoothly functioning workspace,

but you don’t want to overdo it with too much furniture and appliances. It’s all about getting it right by utilising the most efficient solutions. Take, for example, the pull-out bin. The bin tucks away behind closed doors and is out of site, freeing your floor of an unnecessary obstacle, making your kitchen feel bigger. Open shelves and glass-doored cabinets are brilliant at expanding a room. It might feel like only a fraction of extra space, but it definitely opens up your kitchen and stops head-high cupboards from feeling enclosing. Spring Seems to

have Sprung!

Following the successful garden project at Clarendon Primary School to transform a once unused, overgrown space into a beautiful Sensory and Kitchen Garden, we have been busy this term planting bulbs, with the help of some of the children and our PTA members. We’d like to extend a big “Thank You” to Notcutts Garden Centre in Staines for a wonderful donation of end of season bulbs!

seeing the garden in good use during break time and at collection time after a busy school day.

We are looking forward to seeing Daffodils, Tulips, Alliums and Crocus in the garden in the coming weeks/months! They will bring a welcome pop of colour to brighten up the garden area. The children can’t wait to watch them grown in the garden and around the school. Since our grand opening last October which was officially opened by The Major of Spelthorne, Cllr Mayor Mary Madams, the garden has been a source of enjoyment for all. The sensory garden in particular for our younger children and those wanting a spot of peace amongst the hustle and bustle of school life. Parents and Teachers alike are enjoying

8

As the weather becomes more Spring-like we are all looking forward to seeing the garden develop and bloom and the children’s excitement when they start to use some of the herbs and vegetables from the Kitchen Garden.

As all keen gardeners know only too well, it doesn’t just end there, there is general maintenance of any garden to be kept on top of and the school garden is no different. We are so pleased that a teacher with a passion for gardening is due to start a gardening club after the half term with a small group of children, where they can weed, sow seeds and keep the beds tidy. We also have plans to run parent and child gardening workshops in the future, which will be lead by a local parent we work with who has a real interest in sustainable gardening and sharing her knowledge and skills with the younger generation. Staines Preparatory School Founded in 1935, Staines Preparatory School has been ‘Educating today’s children for the Challenges of Tomorrow’ for over 80 years. We are a happy, welcoming and non-selective school that prides itself on creating a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education. Following a full ISI inspection in December 2019, we were proud to achieve the highest rating possible in all categories of the inspection. Staines Prep was rated to be ‘excellent’ in the quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements as well as the quality of the pupils’ personal development. Inspectors reported that "pupils’ achievement is high, particularly in entrance exams and scholarships to selective senior schools” and we are committed to delivering the highest quality educational experience, which is both challenging and fun. Our independent status allows us to provide a bespoke learning opportunity alongside the National Curriculum giving our pupils the tools to achieve well above the national average. This was recognised by the ISI who commented that “Overall achievement in EYFS is excellent” as well as noting that “Mathematics is a strength of the school”, “Numeracy achievement in Year 1 & 2 is excellent” and that “pupils’ writing in English is excellent, with particularly strong pieces of extended writing”. As a school we adopt a ‘Growth Mindset’ culture. Growth Mindset is a programme which looks to empower pupils with the core belief that abilities, rather than being fixed, can be developed over time. Research shows that this powerful belief leads to an increased focus on learning, greater resilience, and superior achievement. The ISI inspectors were particularly impressed by the personal development of pupils, noting in their report that "Pupils display high levels of self-esteem due to the nurturing environment of the school”. The pupils at Staines Prep learn the value of commitment to successful learning, develop discipline and a sense of responsibility. This supportive and nurturing environment enables pupils to fulfil their potential and become more confident, independent lifelong learners across all areas of the curriculum and well–adjusted, global citizens.

10

Our school facilities not only include inspiring classrooms but a science lab and art, design and technology suite which many senior schools would be envious of. We have a large sports hall and theatre space which all pupils take advantage of from nursery upwards. We are very proud to have been awarded the School Games Gold award which, along with our wide range of extra-curricular activities, shows our commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle for all our pupils across all year groups. Our playgrounds are full of activities that get the pupils moving and developing a Growth Mindset outside of the classroom, from a trim trail and climbing wall for the older years through to an array of playground games for the lower school and nursery. Our Environmental Area, The Sanctuary, allows the children to bring science to life. They can pond dip, bird watch and even experience a barefoot walk whilst learning to safely explore the great outdoors. We use Forest School principles to teach skills that can be used in the classroom and beyond, encouraging team work, responsibility and communication as well as building self-esteem and independence. The children are not limited in what they can do but instead are taught how to access and manage the risks in nature. We understand how hard our parents work and we aim to support them by providing wraparound care from 7.30am until 6.00pm. We are less than 5 minutes’ walk from Staines railway station, making pick-up and drop-off that little bit easier. We also operate a bus service from the surrounding areas. To come and experience the school first hand, you can arrange a private tour to fit in around your commitments or visit us at one of our popular Open Mornings which run throughout the year. Details of these can be found on our website www.stainesprep.co.uk.

The

Powerhouse

The Powerhouse is a serviced office complex hidden away between Woodthorpe Road and Ashford Station. It offers small businesses a home where they can have an office at competitive rates with highspeed internet communications and a secure and friendly environment in which to operate. The building was once an engineering works that made industrial pumps. It was converted into offices in 1991, where it housed a telecommunication company called Powerhouse Communications. In 2010 it was remodelled into 20 private offices into the business centre it is today. From this building, two innovative products were brought to the UK market. The first was the introduction of Voicemail into the UK and was first sold to and used by British Telecom and then the UK government and installed into an MI5 building in London where it was first trialed and used. Imagine, in less than10 years after this, it was to be used by every single mobile phone user on the planet, and it made the answering machine obsolete! The second was the invention of the Web Call Button. Designed and invented in Ashford, it was shown in 2000 at the opening year of the Millennium Dome, now the 02. Initially, there was a live demonstration where a pop-up box on a web site enabled the user to input a telephone number, and then the owner of the web site was able to make a call to the enquirer. Now, this has been refined to Web Chat that we are all used to. Next to The Powerhouse was an engineering company that had been making sheet metal products for over 70 years. Their last jobs before the company moved into its new premises in Ashford was to build the central heating and air conditioning ducts for the two new Aircraft Carriers that the Navy was bringing into service. All from Ashford! 12

With an ever diminishing office space in Ashford, in favour of new homes, The Powerhouse and the limited other commercial properties that still exist play an important role to the local retail community as the offices provide people who use the local services throughout the day, without this vital daily work force a number of local services would not exist. The Powerhouse continues to expand its office base to help keep the local Ashford ecosystem alive. With the upcoming 3rd runway and the growth of Staines housing, local offices are playing and will continue to play, a vital and essential role to the local community.

Self Care Tips for Sometimes as working mums, we take so much on our own shoulders that we move from coping swimmingly one moment to being completely overwhelmed by life the next. Whether you’re already feeling stressed out, or want to avoid it in future, here are my top self-care tips for stressed out working mums. 1. Build your village As the African proverb says “It takes a village to raise a child”, yet with aging parents who work into later life, along with the trend of moving away for work, many new parents lack the traditional family support of the past. Making friends with local parents, finding and choosing childcare that fits with your schedule and a reliable babysitter can help fill this void. Action 1: Who can you call on? What other help do you need? 2. Get your body moving When we feel like we’re running around all day, the thought of donning spandex and getting to the gym can be a step too far, but exercise doesn’t have to be that formal. Instead, put on a “party song” and dance around your kitchen to ease the stress of the day and release those feel-good endorphins. Action 2: What’s your favourite party song? 3. Say no External and internal expectations about what we should or shouldn’t be doing as working mums push us to live up to impossible standards for ourselves, making us feel stressed, sick and not good enough. But we don’t have to go along with them, we can say no. Stay in your PJs if you work from home, order take-out on a Tuesday, don’t bath the kids every day - cut yourself a bit of slack. Action 3: What are you saying “Yes” to, when you’d rather be saying “No”? 4. Talk it out with friends Sometimes the best tonic talking. About how ridiculous everything is, how your kids are pains in the you-know-where, about the people in work with their snidey “part-timer” comments whilst they watch cat

14

videos on Youtube. The bar scene from Bad Moms comes to mind. If sorting childcare to get to a bar is too much hard work, invite some friends over and talk it out over a glass of wine in the kitchen, whilst the kids fight about what movie to watch in the other room. Action 4: Who can you invite over to get it all out? 5. Just do it Sometimes we put things off until we feel like doing it and that can make us feel like we’re lazy or bad people. We might NOT feel better if we wait for another hour, and actually getting off our behinds and doing things now might kick ourselves into gear and give us what we really need. Action 5: What have you been putting off? And, check out Mel Robbins’ 5-second rule on Youtube. 6. Have fun as a family Feeling bad about missing out on our children’s milestones is a normal side effect of mum-guilt. I find planning weekend day trips or teaching your kids things you did as a child and making new memories together is a fab way to lessen this feeling, and deciding on your next adventure as soon as you’re back from the last helps you make it through the weeks or months in-between. Action 6: Which memories from your childhood would you like to recreate with your children? 7. Rest when you need to Make sure you also plan downtime for you and your kids. We often live our lives at 100 miles per hour constantly ticking off to-do lists, but we all need a bit of time to do nothing in particular. Along with resting you can keep your energy levels topped by getting enough sleep, eating your greens and getting out in nature. Action 7: How could you schedule more rest into your week?

8. Set boundaries at work and stick to them So many mums I’ve spoken to feel they bring too much “mum” to work and too much work to home to be fully successful in either place. If we want to change the way things are in the workplace, we need to be honest with our needs, and the fact we have children, so if you can’t make a meeting, be honest and find a time you can make. Action 8: What are you putting up with at work, where do you need to stand up for yourself or your family? 9. Be honest about how you’re feeling If you are feeling a bit off, there may be something hanging around in your brain that you haven’t quite processed, taking up headspace and energy. Whatever it is, get it out of your head and onto paper. As soon as you see it in black and white, you can start to process whether it’s worth worrying about and what you can do about it. Action 9: How are you feeling today? Is there something in your head you need to work through? Get it out of your head and into your journal. There are always going to be good days and bad days. That is life. On the good days, celebrate your win. On the bad days, don’t be hard on yourself and do what you can.

Gardening

Trends 2020

Squire’s Garden Centres has revealed their top three gardening trends for 2020, gardening for wildlife, wellbeing, and the world.

1. Gardening for Wildlife Growing plants as a nectar and food source for wildlife encourages native birds and insects to thrive and increase. Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, commented, “The more the built environment expands the more vital our gardens become. What is more, gardening for wildlife can also create magical spaces for humans. There is an undoubted trend towards plants that encourage wildlife and it is our job to help gardeners recognise them.” Combine different flower shapes and varied flowering times to produce a good supply of pollen and nectar for wildlife from spring through to autumn. Some great plants for wildlife include: • Hebe ‘Celine’ – an evergreen shrub with white flowers from April to June • Lavender ‘Melissa’ – highly fragrant flowers from June to August • Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ – a prickle-free thistle that flowers from June to September. • Eyrsimum ‘Super Bowl Sunset’ – a new variety of wallflower which blooms from April to September 2. Gardening for Wellbeing Increased emphasis on mental, as well as physical health has highlighted the proven benefits of being outside and reconnecting with nature. Gardening is a great way to disconnect from screens and find some genuine reality. Sarah Squire added, “Gardening is creative - you plant your own canvas. White flowering plants remain very popular, but a lot of fun can be had with colour in the garden so don’t rule anything out. It is your garden and should reflect your own tastes and personality.”

20

White plants • Choisya ‘Greenfingers’ - glossy evergreen leaves & scented summer flowers • Clematis Montana ‘Miss Christine’ – fragrant white flowers from May - June Bold & Bright plants • Rosa ‘For You With Love’ – repeat flowering bush rose, lightly scented • Clematis ‘Meghan’ – named after the Duchess of Sussex it flowers from May to June and again in September. 3. Gardening for the World “Gardeners are among some of the most environmentally conscious people I know, always on the lookout for green alternatives, committed composters and totally invested in doing their bit.” said Sarah Squire. “And the industry is working hard to make sure plant pots are made of recycled material, which can in its turn be recycled.” She added, “Britain has some of the best nursery growers in the world and you may be surprised just how many plants in your local garden centre are grown in the UK, many very locally indeed, thus reducing plant miles. If there is one thing I think we could all do for our world fairly easily it is plant a tree. Trees are fantastic as a habitat and food source for wildlife and as a source of carbon capture. They also give structure and architecture to a garden.” There are trees for every size and shape of garden, from a small acer in a pot on a balcony or a gorgeous flowering cherry in a back garden, to birch, whitebeam and hornbeam for larger spaces. Plant one today and make our world a better place.
