Important Things To Think About When Planning Your Kitchen Layout When redesigning their kitchen, many homeowners assume that they don’t have many options when it comes to the layout. Where your natural light comes from It is important not to overlook natural lighting when you’re planning a kitchen layout. Unless you’re willing/able to block up your old windows and create new ones, you should ensure that your new layout is cautions of where your natural light comes from. The same goes for any exterior doors that you have, ideally, you should keep these as easily accessible as possible.

A lot of the time, the original layout of a kitchen isn’t the best way to use the space and this is often because aesthetics was considered more important than functionality. Whilst there is no denying that it is always important to balance these two things during the luxury kitchen design process, when you’re planning your layout, the functionality should be at the forefront of your mind. To help anyone who is wanting to strip their kitchen back and start from scratch, so to speak, below are some important things to think about when you’re planning your new fitted kitchen layout. What you dislike about your current layout Whenever you’re working on a new luxury kitchen design, the best place to start is by thinking about what you dislike about your current kitchen. So, be sure to consider the layout you have at the moment and make note of what you dislike, and also what you like too if there is anything specific, this will help you as you start to make decisions about your new layout.

4

The different purposes of your kitchen space Knowing how you most frequently use your kitchen is always beneficial when working on a new design too. For example, do you spend more time cooking and baking in this space than you do socialising? Once you have highlighted the main purposes of your kitchen, you can then ensure that the layout is both suitable and accommodating for your needs. Which appliances are essential to you More often than not, when working on a new kitchen layout, where you want your appliances to go will dictate lots of the other decisions that you make. So, start by working out which appliances are absolutely essential to you and what you will be incorporating into your new fitted kitchen design. You can then ensure that they’re included in your layout from the outset. Working with Ashford Kitchens & Interiors Should you require any professional assistance when working on your kitchen design, which is highly recommended, our team here at Ashford Kitchens & Interiors will gladly help. For many years now we have been helping homeowners create their dream luxury kitchens, so you can trust that you’re in experienced hands with our team. One of our talented kitchen designers will gladly sit down with you and discuss your refurbishment project with you in more detail, so please don’t hesitate to contact us today.

Feel Good Spring Put a spring back into your step and spend more time outside or in your garden. The warmer weather is uplifting and the sights and sounds of nature will engage all your senses and make you feel good. Squire’s Garden Centres suggest nine outdoor activities to make you feel good this spring – and none of them have to cost you anything at all. 9 Spring Activities to Make You Feel Good 1. Feel clarity with a garden clean up – Have a spring clean in the garden. Rake up fallen leaves, prune back hedges and shrubs, tidy your shed and clean garden tools and garden furniture so that they are all ready to use. 2. Smell the sweet fragrance of flowers in bloom – Whether it’s smelling the scent of flowers in your garden or those in parks and outdoor spaces, engage your sense of smell and enjoy the beautiful fragrance of tulips, daffodils, irises, hyacinths or magnolia. 3. Spot your first bumblebee searching for nectar – The lifecycle of a bumblebee begins in spring, when rising temperatures awaken a queen bumblebee that has been hibernating alone in the soil. She’ll feed on flowers, drinking nectar to gain energy and collecting pollen to bring back to the nest. There are 24 different species of bumblebee in the UK. They love plants such as dahlias, buddleia, lavender, clematis, foxglove, hosta and wildflowers. 4. Feel the freshness of the earth and air – Reconnect with nature. Dig the garden soil, perhaps in order to plant, or hoe to remove weeds as they start to grow, and breath in the fresh spring air. The more fresh air you get the more oxygen you will breathe, which increases the amount of serotonin (the happy hormone) you inhale, consequently making you happier! 5. Look out for a glimpse of wildlife waking up – Hedgehogs normally come out of hibernation in mid-March to early-April depending how warm the weather is. Their first priority is water, so help them by leaving out a small bowl of fresh water in your garden. Special hedgehog food is available to buy if you wish. Hedgehogs are nocturnal so your best chance of seeing them is at night. They like dry

6

spaces such as under garden sheds, near compost heaps or hedges, or in an untidy bit of your garden. 6.Sense new life and optimism in every scene – Wonder at the power of nature. See the bulbs emerging from the soil, pale green leaves appearing on trees, flower buds starting to open and the sight of beautiful blossom everywhere. 7. Wander through swathes of beautiful bluebells – Carpets of bluebells are one of the greatest sights of spring. Bluebells usefully flower from late March through to May. The best places to spot them are in old and ancient woods, along hedgerows, or in fields and gardens. Native bluebells have a strong and sweet scent, so the stronger the smell the more likely you’ve found a native specimen. 8. Listen to the lullaby of birds returning – A large number of birds migrate to the UK every spring including Swallows, Warblers, Martins, Swifts and Cuckoos. Get up early and enjoy listening to the ‘dawn chorus’ as birds defend their territories and sing to attract a mate. Birds begin to sing about an hour before sunrise. It’s best to pick a day with fine weather and little wind. The first songsters of the season are residents such as Robins and Great Tits, followed by migrants such as the Chiffchaff or Blackcap Warbler. 9. Smell the scent of freshly cut grass – March is generally the time to start mowing the lawn. Put the blades on their highest level and gradually reduce the level until your reach your desired height by the end of April. Freshly cut grass smells so good as it reminds us of summer and weekends, which makes us feel good and boosts our mood.

Who is the New Agent in Town? Milestone Residential first began trading back in 1890, and has become one of the oldest and most established independent Estate Agents in Richmond borough. With such success, we are pleased to have opened our fourth sales and lettings office in the vibrant and popular town of Ashford, situated in the premier location of 22 Church Road. At our new office, we have an experienced team who specialize in both sales and lettings, as well as a resident financial advisor on hand to manage any mortgage enquiries. Our History With the railway extending into Twickenham in 1848 and a new station opening, there was an influx of Londoners escaping the built up capital which led to the opening of our first branch.

The same demand is again being experienced. As buyers and tenants from the London Boroughs are now moving out into Spelthorne, looking for more open space and value for money. Our fourth office in Ashford has now opened to meet this encouraging and increasing demand. Our Ashford office covers the areas of Sunbury, Staines, Stanwell, Shepperton, Bedfont and Feltham. 8

We have helped generations of local families with their property needs. Our archiving still contains sales details going back to the Victorian and Edwardian era many of which have been used for reference purposes by local historical societies. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras our firm was responsible for the sale of significant tracts of land between Teddington town centre and the River Thames and was therefore instrumental in the development of a number of the “river roads”. What sets us apart? Mindful of our heritage and longevity in the property market, we consistently provide good “old-fashioned” straightforward professional advice with the highest level of customer service, whilst incorporating the latest marketing and technology to ensure we are the best at what we do – selling houses. We strive to exceed our clients expectations. The Milestone Residential brand extends into the London Boroughs with 3 successful branches in Whitton, Twickenham and Teddington, meaning we have access to an extensive database of buyers who are actively looking to move into the Surrey area.

Meet the team John Walton, the director has spent over 40 years building the Milestone brand. Due to his established position and depth of experience in the property market, John has been approached by Sky News, BBC Radio 4 and The Evening Standard, to share his views and knowledge of the residential sales market. John personally undertakes all valuations and oversees all aspects of transactions in the Ashford Office. He is looking forward to being part of the local community, as are the rest of his dynamic team. We look forward to becoming part of such a thriving community and bringing our expertise to help sellers, buyers, landlords and tenants with their property requirements. We pride ourselves on adopting the same ethos of customer care, energy and focus that has led to the company’s success through the years since 1890. With the latest update on the stamp duty holiday extension, we have been busy with new enquiries. If you are curious to know how much your home is worth, please contact us for a Free Valuation, we are available 7 days a week and would be delighted to help you.

Spelthorne In Bloom 2021 Poster Competition The Spelthorne in Bloom Committee has launched its annual poster competition for children. The competition is open to children aged 5 - 11, who live in Spelthorne. The overall winning entry will be used as this year’s Spelthorne in Bloom logo and feature on the front cover of the entry form and other publicity materials for the 2021 competition. This year’s theme is ‘climate change’ and the judges are encouraging the children to use their imagination to interpret how plants, flowers and vegetables growing in their own gardens, or at school, are being affected by rising temperatures and changes in rainfall. We would also like the words ‘Spelthorne in Bloom’ to be included on the poster.

If you have any queries, please email spelthorne.inbloom@spelthorne.gov.uk.

Entries can either be hand-drawn (or painted) or designed on a computer. The judges will pick 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, grouped for children aged 5 -7 and 8 – 11. Chairman of the Spelthorne in Bloom Committee, Nick Wood-Dow, said: “In past years, Spelthorne’s schools have organised this competition for us and sent the posters back to the Council offices for judging. However, with most schools currently closed, we are asking parents to encourage their children to take part from home. We are looking forward to seeing their entries.” Please submit your children’s entries via the link on our website https://spelthorne-self. achieveservice.com/service/Spelthorne_in_ bloom_2021 Please do not send any pictures of your children when you upload the posters. The closing date for receipt of entries is 4pm on Friday 9 April.

Home Care - Find YOUR New Role "The team at Allium Home Care are very friendly and caring; they treat the people using their service as part of their own family, going out of their way to ensure everyone is cared for. I have loved getting to know the other people I work with and the ladies and gentlemen who I've had the pleasure to meet and care for so far. I have learnt so much about how care workers can provide, and do provide, support to those who need help to stay in their own homes.

"When I joined Allium Home Care in September, I had no experience of the Care Industry at all, but everyone has been friendly, encouraging, helpful and genuinely a pleasure to work with. I am throughly enjoying my journey with Allium Home Care." L.D. - Home Care Worker

Everyone has their own interesting story to tell and people have been so kind and patient with me as I learn my way around the care work. I love being part of a team who care so much for others. " P.M. - Home Care Worker

Staines Preparatory School

Staines Preparatory School and Sunflowers Nursery is a happy, welcoming school with a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education. Following an ISI inspection in December 2019, we were proud to achieve the highest rating in all categories and we were shortlisted for the Independent School Parent’s Prep School of the Year 2020. Our Ethos of ‘Educating today’s children for the Challenges of Tomorrow’ covers far more than academic education and we take a holistic view to develop the whole-child. We nurture and guide pupils to be to be confident, lifelong independent learners and truly global citizens with natural integrity. Our Staines Prep Way values define a culture of community and respect which lie at the heart of school life. We use modelling and positive reinforcement to teach these values, integrating them into everything we do and respectful conversations help guide pupils in future decision making. A Growth Mindset approach is strongly embedded into our school’s culture and pupils learn the value of commitment to successful learning, develop discipline and a sense of responsibility and pupils perform exceptionally well in senior school entrance and scholarship exams. Our school facilities not only include inspiring classrooms but a science lab and art, design and technology suite which many senior schools would be envious of. We have a large sports hall and theatre space which all pupils take advantage

20

of from nursery upwards. Our environmental area, The Sanctuary, allows the children to bring science to life and learn to safely explore the great outdoors. We use Forest School principles to teach skills that can be used in the classroom and beyond, encouraging team work, responsibility and communication as well as building self-esteem and independence. The children are not limited in what they can do but instead are taught how to access and manage the risks in nature. We understand how hard our parents work and we aim to support them by providing wraparound care from 7.30am until 6.00pm. We are less than 5 minutes’ walk from Staines railway station and operate a school minibus service from the surrounding areas, making pick-up and drop-off that little bit easier. With a swift pivot to virtual learning in March 2020, our Senior Leaders analysed the best approach to ensure continued growth for pupils learning at home, and supporting key workers in school. Our StainesPrep@Home virtual learning programme combined live, pre-recorded lessons and independent work to enable parents to manage home-schooling around other commitments. With a strong focus on well-being, our ELSA had regular 1:1 sessions with pupils who needed additional support and all pupils had a 1:1 with their tutor or class teacher once a week. Through this blended learning and nurturing support our pupils continued to progress with 80% of our Year 6 pupils achieving ‘above average’ or ‘very high’ in cognitive ability assessments. A 50% improvement since 2019. Book a tour today to discover more about Staines Prep admissions@stainesprep.co.uk.

Easter Holiday Fun Ideas I’m sure most parents are more than a little fed up with hearing the phrase ‘I’m bored….’ It’s been a difficult year for most of us, especially children/teens who have desperately missed their usual socialising at school and in their free time. Like most parents we have tried our best to try to keep their spirits up by keeping them busy, but a whole year of coming up with new ideas can be a little draining for even the most inventive individuals. Here are a few ideas that we will be trying over the Easter break! 1. Take a virtual trip – a number of museums, zoos and other organisations are offering virtual tours, one of our favourites is the Johnson Space Center – Boeing leads the tour through the Houston, Texas facility, covering the history and future of aerospace innovation. Have a search online for some interesting tours, most of which are free of charge. 2. Play come dine with me – ideal with teens, firstly decide on your teams and a prize for the winner(s), each team can then decide on a theme for their evening and create menus. You may want to record the preparation, the meals, and any entertainment, to show to friends or grandparents. At the end of each teams meal the guests score the chef out of 10, the scoring is kept secret – put score cards into labelled envelopes until the big reveal at the end. 3. PlpLan an Easter egg hunt – look online for inspiration for cryptic clues or novel suggestions for your hunt, you could also set up some fun activities such as a hula hoop competition, egg and spoon race, bunny hop sack race, pin the tail on the rabbit or egg toss. 4. Build a fairy house – gather materials from hedgerows, parks, and flowerbeds to create a tiny home for imaginary creatures in your garden. Get creative by adding touches like a To advertise contact Carley: E: Carley@thetwmag.com

carpet (moss) and a washbasin (an upturned shell). 5. Get crafty – Easter gives us a whole host of new craft projects that can be undertaken, pompom chicks, egg cress men, egg decorating, easter bunnies, easter bonnets and cards. The list is almost endless and will provide hours of fun to both little and older children. If you can’t face the mess, then wait for a dry day and take the activities out into the garden. 6. Build a den – all you need is a large blanket, some sheets, and cushions. This is a fun activity for little ones to play indoors or outdoors and should keep them occupied for a little while. 7. Play board games online family or frie nds – play Monopoly online (available on iOS and Android – for a small fee) it has an online multiplayer mode that lets you play private games with another household. Get the app to play Uno or The Risk: Global Domination, free on both iOS and Android. 8. Host a pamper day – we all love a pamper day in our house, put your dressing gowns on and indulge. Light some candles, put soothing music on, make homemade face packs and scrubs, soak your feet in warm scented water and treat each other to a hand massage, manicure or pedicure for a real treat! 9. Make a time capsule – include things that you have done during lockdown, such as crafts, letters, pictures, thoughts etc. You could collate a scrapbook together with pictures and memories from what you’ve got up to and how you felt throughout the past 12 months.

William & John Lodge (6th Generation) Share the Secrets of Success in a Family Business Q: Lodge Brothers is the longest serving family-owned funeral business in the local area, what do you think is the secret to success when working with family? A: When a family business has spanned 240 years and has been developed over seven generations, the loyalty to each other is ingrained. The exchange of knowledge, mentoring and coaching from one generation to the next allows the progression of modernisation and new ideas in carrying the company forward. Over the years our reputation has been built on trust, recommendation and the quality of service we provide. Naturally, each family member strives to maintain that reputation for themselves and for each other. It is a real team effort.

Q. What is the biggest change you’ve observed in the last few decades? A. Many years ago, we, like our forefathers, called on our carpentry skills to build and French polish the coffins for each funeral. This was part of the service we provided. Automated machinery for the production of coffins was not introduced until the1960s by specialist suppliers. Although to this day our skilled staff still personally add the bespoke interior lining, handles and name plate for each coffin in our workshop. Over the generations, we have also observed a change in trends. There has been a gradual shift in philosophy away from the traditional religious funeral service, with sombre mourners dressed in black - now we see more secular services led by civil celebrants, with families opting to ‘commemorate and celebrate’ the life of a loved one, remembering their character and hobbies, and sometimes, introducing brighter colours to the clothes the mourners wear or request a coloured tie worn by our funeral bearers (e.g football related colours of blue or red). And, of course, popular music selections are now preferable to the traditional singing of hymns. Nowadays, with the rise in natural burials and ‘greener’ funeral options, the freedom of choice for our clients is far wider than ever before and it has been very interesting to see this develop. To advertise contact Carley: E: Carley@thetwmag.com

Q. Do you have a particular lasting memory from your years of service that has made you proud to be a Lodge Brother? A. We were honoured to be asked to care for the repatriation of the British servicemen who had died in combat during the Falklands War. Then, a year after the war ended, along with 11 members of staff, we spent three months in the Falkland Islands, locating and burying the deceased Argentinian soldiers who had died in battle, the interments either taking place at Port Stanley Cemetery, or repatriation arranged back to Argentina.

Q. The past year has been a challenge for everyone, particularly the funeral profession. What is your biggest hope for 2021? A. It has been a difficult year to observe, with so many bereaved families not able to invite as many family and friends to attend a funeral due to the restrictions of the number of mourners allowed, and sometimes not being able to have the funeral service in their usual place of worship. We look forward in hope that the new vaccination programmes will be successful and that infection rates will drop so that we can all get back to some sort of normality, allowing our families to say goodbye the way they want to. We personally are certainly looking forward to spending a lot more time with our children, grand-children and extended family and friends this year.

Thyme to Cook As husband and wife, both qualified chefs and parents to our teenage son, Mark was furloughed during the first Covid lockdown while Sinead worked from home and son Liam was home schooled. When you’ve got a busy household, having to think ‘what can I cook for dinner tonight’ is time consuming and so we've always done a Weekly Meal Plan in advance of a main food shop. During those first few weeks of lockdown and the initial panic buying that was evidenced by everyone, our Meal Plan was adapted to use up all the odds and ends in the freezer and all the pulses and grains bought for just one recipe! Nothing was wasted. At the same time, Mark’s Mum had an extended stay in hospital and so we helped to manage her three allotment plots. Grow it, Cook it, Eat it became our motto! There are a number of recipes on the website that include allotment grown veggies. The recipes we've created are family friendly, won't cost a fortune and we've purposefully avoided using too much culinary terminology. More recipes will be added over time. In the meantime, you can follow us on Instagram at thymetocook2021

Ingredients for cake: 125gm butter • 175gm caster sugar 175gm self raising flour • 2 medium free range eggs Zest of 1 lemon • 4 tbsp milk Ingredients for syrup: 100gm icing sugar Juice of 1 lemon Ingredients for Icing: 150gm icing sugar, sifted Juice of 1 lemon Method: Pre heat oven to 180c. Line a loaf tin with greaseproof paper or loaf tin liners are even easier! Cream butter & sugar together until soft and fluffy. Add lemon zest and eggs and beat together.

Happy Cooking!

Gently fold in flour, add the milk & mix thoroughly.

Sinead & Mark February has been a busy month at Thyme To Cook HQ. Lots more recipes have been developed and shared so we hope you found them useful and managed to get all the family involved. With the green shoots of Spring emerging we’ll be focussing on Easter Treats and Lighter Bites. This recipe will be featured on the website in time for Easter. It’s a classic Lemon Drizzle!

Spoon into tin & bake for 45 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Make syrup by gently heating the lemon juice and icing sugar until the sugar dissolves. When the cake comes out of the oven make random holes with a skewer on top of the cake. Pour the syrup over. Leave to cool completely. To make the icing just mix the icing sugar & lemon juice together until thickened & pour on top. Store in an airtight container.

An Update From The Mayor of Spelthorne While lockdown restrictions have limited many Mayoral activities over the past two months I have, nonetheless, been amazed at Spelthorne residents' determination to help others in need. I have been keeping myself informed of the work many residents have been doing to support their community. Our food bank volunteers have been ensuring our most vulnerable residents have been provided with meals. The local Aurora Rotary have been supporting our schoolchildren by providing computer facilities to their schools to help those who do not have access to their own devices. Education is the greatest gift we can give to our children and we must work hard to ensure that they have access to all essential equipment to help them in later life. I have been fortunate enough to have received my first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on 20 January. I was very impressed with how the vaccination programme went and wish to add my congratulations to our local NHS teams for such a

successful rollout over the last few weeks. I would encourage residents to accept their invitation when they are contacted by the NHS and urge them to continue to follow the rules; notably around staying at home, wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing, isolating and getting tested. Residents who can't work from home should get regular tests at our centre in StainesUpon Thames. Details can be found here: https://www.spelthorne.gov.uk/article/20019/ Symptom-free-tests-Targeted-Community-Testing Finally, I want to pay tribute to the staff at this Council who have been working tirelessly to offer support to our residents. I am particularly proud of the Support4Spelthorne initiative which has provided much-needed hot meals to our most vulnerable families and helped ensure all children have been supported over half-terms and holidays. I am also proud of our Send a Smile campaign, which has done exactly what it says on the tin to our residents suffering with dementia.

spread across Europe and gave rise to the international movement known as ‘Caravaggism’. Yet for many, Caravaggio is famed as much for his art as for his criminal record. Was it the violence of his times or his own violent spirit that inspired the dramatic lighting and intense naturalism of his work? Lecturer Julia Musgrave follows the dramatic incidents of the artist’s life and looks at why and how his influence spread so far.

A Policing Update As we come out of Lockdown measures we know we will see an increase in crime activity. Take this time to review your home security. Consider visiting Surrey Police Website www.surrey.police.uk where there is a section on crime prevention. We ask all our residents to consider really basic security such as: *Side alley gates - renew padlocks and remove anything that can assist someone climbing over * Sheds and outbuildings - look to see if they need new padlocks or locks or even basic shed alarms *Bikes – if they are stored in garages or sheds are they also locked and secured so they cannot be removed easily- get them registered with www.bikeregister.com * Consider registering your property on immobilise * Take pictures of items that are expensive or rare *Consider joining your local Neighbourhood watch to get the latest updates and information. We are also experiencing a high number of Catalytic converter crimes. This crime is often a crime that you may not even be aware that is happening. The offence is usually conducted by two persons and can take minutes. Usually the offenders will approach a vehicle with a hydraulic jack and lift the vehicle and you may think they are just changing a tyre. However it looks 36

suspicious it probably is. Please do not approach the offenders, consider taking details and calling police to relay as much information as possible so that we can respond as soon as possible. We also need to find out more about where all these Catalytic converters go, if you know you can contact us direct on the website or if you would rather stay anonymous call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 You may have seen some of the massive improvements that have started now in Stanwell, on the Northlands estates. New gated entrances are now in place in some blocks and there will also be Maxine Cilia - Borough new communal entrances Commander and intercoms and safe mailboxes. This is all part of the Safer Streets Campaign between Surrey Police and A2Dominion Housing and the Police and Crime Commissioner. We look forward to seeing the new safer estate improved for all residents. Finally as Spring returns we will see lighter evenings and that always means rich picking from vehicles. Please do not leave your valuables on show in vehicles at local walking spots. If you can avoid taking valuables with you at all that is the best solution however if you do, please keep them with you or ensure they are hidden out of sight and that you vehicle is locked and secured.

Parents with children at nurseries, schools and colleges A guide to regular rapid Covid-19 testing

Regular rapid testing is now available for parents, their households and bubbles. Regular rapid testing is a fast and easy way to find out if you have coronavirus and help protect your loved ones and community. It’s free and takes around 30 minutes.

Why introduce regular rapid testing? Up to 1 in 3 people who have Covid-19 have no symptoms and could be spreading it without knowing. Regular rapid testing is now available for parents of nursery, school children and college students. As well as adults in their households, childcare and support bubbles. Regular testing for people without symptoms is already taking place across the country. Thousands of people who didn’t know they had the virus have been able to take action to stop the spread of the disease. As lockdown restrictions ease, getting into the regular habit of twice weekly testing will play an important role in getting back to normal; alongside the vaccine, following the hands, face, space guidance, and social distancing measures.

To advertise contact Carley: E: Carley@thetwmag.com

Regular testing for school staff and students Regular rapid testing is already available to all staff at nursery, primary and secondary schools and colleges. Secondary school and college students aged 11 and above will continue to access regular rapid tests directly through their school or college. And we continue to encourage them to get tested. On return they will initially be supervised while testing at school and then continue to test themselves at home with test kits they will get from school or college. Nursery and primary school children are not being asked to be tested as evidence continues to show that children and young people are at low risk from Covid-19 and are very unlikely to get seriously ill.

What is the benefit to you? By taking part in regular rapid testing, you’ll be protecting yourself and your loved ones. And helping us all get back to a more normal way of life.
