Welcome to our Bounce Back issue. It seems such a long time since our Spring magazine, how life has changed! It's great to be back. Over the past four months, we have seen our community support those who needed a helping hand through Support4Spelthorne and the incredible efforts of our local food banks, church groups, and many other community volunteers. Thankyou! Our local shops stayed open where possible to support and serve us, and It was good to see trades such as the local bakers, butchers, and greengrocers busy with a surge in demand for their services. I do hope the support continues in the coming months, they need us more than ever, so if you can, please do Shop Local. Look out for our new business and community directory www.LoveLocalSpelthorne.co.uk coming soon! Read more on the centre pages. As many of us have walked, ran and cycled around our local area these past few months, you could not fail to notice the enormous support for our Key Workers, from paintings in windows to rainbows on shop fronts and of course, the weekly applauses. It was good to be able to show our appreciation for those going above and beyond at this time. This issue is all about Bouncing Back! Please support our advertisers, if you use their services, do let them know you saw them in The TW Magazine. We very much hope to be back again in September. Stay safe and stay well. Until the Autumn.

Ashford Kitchens & Interiors Are Back Doing What They Love Most ‘The Flowers Are Weathering The Storm’ Like other local independent businesses, owner Stephen Flower and his gallant team had to adapt quickly to cope with the very unusual circumstances that the Covid-19 Pandemic has brought. Making a considered and heavy-hearted decision to temporarily close both Farnham Common and Ashford showrooms prior to official lockdown, they felt this was absolutely necessary to protect the team, customers and local community. Proud of the fact that all installations were completed to a point where no customer was left without a working kitchen. Quickly modifying their website to easily direct people to information that would guide them to measure their own space or send in building plans so that they could start the design process. They continued to service existing and new enquiries remotely. ‘Our fantastic team set themselves up working from home around family life and we were able to provide remote design consultations. We are now fitting installations of customers that first got in touch during the period that the showroom was closed!’ MD Stephen Flower proudly explains. ‘Our trusted and long-standing suppliers have been incredible, resuming production and distribution quickly and responsibly. It is testament to the relationships we have built together that we have been able to get through this unpredictable time and resume installations to our usual high standards.’ Halfway through an exciting new refit in both the Ashford and Farnham Common showrooms as they closed, they are now pleased to say they are now completed and throughout both showrooms there are some beautiful new displays. Guy Fox, Director and brother-in-law to Stephen, describes the new additions ‘Autograph (one of the new displays pictured) is a new door style; handless and smooth, pairing traditional and super modern, it is available in 21 different painted finishes. Lustre Metallic is another new door style we now have on display; it has a beautiful glossy finish and is a perfect choice if you want to make a statement in your kitchen!’ Pantries and dresser units are becoming increasingly popular, they can be configured in many ways to suit your storage requirements and offer a wonderfully more organised and accessible space. Aside from the practicalities of having a larder cupboard, they can also stand out as a beautiful design feature in your kitchen. With the rise in people

working from home, they are also seeing an increase in Home Office Enquiries, offering a complete design supply and installation service. With a fantastic choice of styles and the ability to tailor the space to your personal requirements. Fitted Bedroom enquires are also plentiful ‘perhaps we are all valuing our home a personal space more than ever before’ The message from this family business is clear and positive through these stressful and turbulent times ‘We are open and would love to welcome you back into our showrooms’ says Richard Flower, founder of the business which first opened its doors in 1984. Grace Flower, wife to Stephen ‘We are here when you are ready. We have put procedures in place to keep everyone safe and comfortable. We love what we do and this period has highlighted just how much we enjoy making a positive difference to the homes and lives of our customers’ We are so glad to be back in the showrooms and we look forward to welcoming you.’ Ashford Kitchens & Interiors offer a local, friendly, knowledgeable kitchen, bedroom and home office design service. Whether you are after some inspiration for a new home project or would like advice on the latest appliance - they are ready to help! Welcome To The New Mayor of Spelthorne Cllr Colin Barnard was elected as the new Mayor for Spelthorne at the Annual Council Meeting held on Thursday 18 June. Cllr Tony Harman was elected as Deputy Mayor. Cllr Barnard was first elected to the Council to represent Shepperton Town in 2015. Over the last five years he has served on various committees and held Cabinet positions with responsibility for Corporate Management and Planning and Economic Development. In 2019 he was elected as Deputy Mayor. Cllr Barnard has lived in Shepperton for 18 years. He is very active in the local community and a member of the Shepperton Arora Rotary Club. He sings in the church choir, is a keen musician and enjoys researching family history. He has a love of the River Thames and all things nautical and enjoys spending time sailing his boat in local waters. His wife Barbara will join him as Mayoress for his year in office.

The Mayor's proposed charities* for 2020/21 are: River Ash Girl Guiding: building girls' confidence and raising their aspirations by giving them the chance to discover their full potential and encouraging them to be a powerful force for good Shooting Star Children's Hospices: a leading children's hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families Spelthorne District Scouts: building and developing young people's confidence, sense of adventure and outdoor skills, as well as encouraging them to explore their beliefs and attitudes After being sworn in as Mayor, Cllr Barnard said: "I am honoured and proud to accept the office of Mayor for 2020/2021 and I should like to thank all the councillors for the honour they have bestowed upon me." 6

A Policing Update There has been an extended holiday from school for many of our youths in the local Boroughs. Some of the key issues we are seeing involve age groups 13- 17 years. Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in anti-social behaviour, including noise, criminal damage, especially from the use of catapults, and the use of cannabis, alcohol, and Nitrous Oxide canisters. We ask that parents take an interest in what their children are doing throughout the day and evenings. Are they just hanging about in the local parks and shopping centres? Do they have catapults in their pockets? If they do, they are at risk of arrest as it is an offensive weapon to have in a public place, especially if found with ammunition. We will take action if anyone is found with a catapult. If your child is found behaving in an anti-social way, you will be contacted to collect them, and you may even get a letter from your housing provider or our anti-social behaviour team too! We have seen the theft of dogs suddenly increase in the area. This is most unusual, and currently, we have no lines of enquiry except to circulate the pictures of the dogs. However, please be mindful that if you leave your dog unattended in a publicly accessed area, they may be at risk if they are friendly and especially if they are small and easily carried away.

with domestic abuse and offer advice, please visit Surrey Police Website www.surrey.police.uk/advice/ advice-and-information/daa/domestic-abuse/ support-helplines/ for more information.

Other crimes that continue during these lighter evenings include, theft from motor vehicles. Over the past months, we have seen an increase in low-level thefts from vehicles such as sunglasses, loose change, and other items generally left in a car console area.

What is a hate crime? A hate crime is when someone commits a crime against you because of your disability, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other perceived difference.

Our advice is not to leave anything on display in the vehicle and make sure your vehicle is locked. If you have a remote locking key, please ensure that it is not left near the front door area, either put in a Faraday Bag to prevent anyone from enabling access to your vehicle. Other thefts are in the form of catalytic converters, and these are usually taken in broad daylight in a matter of seconds. It is difficult to prevent this type of crime; however, certain vehicles do have the catalytic converter more easily accessible and can benefit from having a protective cage fitted to make it more difficult. Domestic abuse is continuing to increase. Often a hidden crime and nobody knows once the front door is closed. If you are worried about someone your know that may be subject to any form of domestic abuse you can report on their behalf. There are many other organisations that can assist

Alex ClarkStaines Town Centre PCSO

My final plea is around hate Crime. If you are a victim, please ensure that you report it to the police. We do take this crime very seriously.

It doesn’t always include physical violence. Someone using offensive language towards you or harassing you because of who you are, or who they think you are, is also a crime. The same goes for someone posting abusive or offensive messages about you online. If it happens to you, you may be tempted to shrug it off, but if you report the hate crime, we can investigate and stop it from getting worse – either for you or someone else. Surrey Police are very proud to say that we record crimes against people from alternative subcultures as hate crimes. Alternative subculture hate crimes are crimes committed against people for the way they dress or their lifestyle. Please report via 101, our online reporting system, https://www.surrey.police. uk/advice/advice-and-information/hco/hate-crime/ how-to-report-hate-crime/ or if you feel threatened and in danger of course call 999. Please stay safe during these extraordinary times.

Gardening Trends 2020 Wildlife, Wellbeing & The World Gardening for Wildlife Growing plants as a nectar and food source for wildlife encourage native birds and insects to thrive and increase. White plants Choisya ‘Greenfingers’ - glossy evergreen leaves ruched summer flowers Clematis Montana AKA ‘Miss Christine’ – fragrant white flowers from May - June Gardening for wildlife can also create magical spaces for humans. There is a real trend towards plants that encourage wildlife and it is our job to recognise them. Combine different flower shapes and varied flowering times to produce a good supply of pollen and nectar for wildlife from spring to autumn. Some great plants for wildlife include: Hebe ‘Celine’ – an evergreen shrub with white flowers from April to June Lavender ‘Melissa’ – highly fragrant flowers from June to August Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ – a prickle-free thistle that flowers from June to September. Eyrsimum ‘Super Bowl Sunset’ – a new variety of wallflower which blooms from April to September

Bold & Bright plants Rosa ‘For You With Love’ – repeat-flowering bush rose, lightly scented Clematis ‘Meghan’ – named after the Duchess of Sussex it flowers from May to June and again in September

Gardening for the World. Gardeners are among some of the most environmentally conscious people and are always on the lookout for green alternatives, committed composters, and totally invested in doing their bit. The industry is working hard to make sure plant pots are made of recycled material, which can then in turn, be recycled.”

Gardening for Wellbeing.

Britain has some of the best nursery growers in the world and you may be surprised just how many plants in your local garden centre are grown in the UK, many very locally indeed.

Increased emphasis on mental and physical health has highlighted the proven benefits of being outside and reconnecting with nature. Gardening is a great way to disconnect from screens and find some genuine reality.

Trees are fantastic as a habitat and food source for wildlife and as a source of carbon capture. They also give structure and architecture to a garden.

Gardening is creative, and you plant your very own canvas. White flowering plants remain very popular, but much fun can be had with colour in the garden. It is your garden after all and should reflect your tastes and personality.

There are trees for every size and shape of garden, from a small Acer in a pot on a balcony or a gorgeous flowering cherry in a garden, then there are others such as birch, whitebeam, and hornbeam for larger spaces. Plant a tree today and make our world a better place for tomorrow.

Staines Preparatory School Staines Preparatory School is a happy and welcoming non-selective school that prides itself on creating a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education. We have been ‘Educating today’s children for the Challenges of Tomorrow’ for over 85 years and we’re delighted to have just been shortlisted for ‘Prep School of the Year’ in the Independent School awards 2020. This accolade comes hot on the heels of our December 2019 ISI inspection where we achieved the highest rating possible in all categories ‘excellent’ in the quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements as well as the quality of the pupils’ personal development. Our independent status allows us to provide a bespoke learning opportunity alongside the National Curriculum giving our pupils the tools to achieve well above the national average. This was recognised by the ISI who commented that “Overall achievement in EYFS is excellent” as well as noting that “Mathematics is a strength of the school”, “Numeracy achievement in Year 1 & 2 is excellent” and that “pupils’ writing in English is excellent, with particularly strong pieces of extended writing”. As a school we adopt a ‘Growth Mindset’ culture. Growth Mindset is a programme which looks to empower pupils with the core belief that abilities, rather than being fixed, can be developed over time. Research shows that this powerful belief leads to an increased focus on learning, greater resilience, and superior achievement. The ISI inspectors were particularly impressed by the personal development of pupils, noting in their report that "Pupils display high levels of self-esteem due to the nurturing environment of the school”. The pupils at Staines Prep learn the value of commitment to successful learning, develop discipline and a sense of responsibility. This supportive and nurturing environment enables pupils to fulfil their potential and become more confident, independent lifelong learners across all areas of the curriculum and well–adjusted, global citizens. Facing the challenges for the last few months as we have had to deal with the measures put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 has tested our resilience as a school community as well as that of our pupils. Our growth mindset culture has come to the fore as our pupils made the switch online. We listened to our parents and ‘Staines Prep @ Home’ included a full timetable of classes with a balanced programme of live virtual lessons, pre-recorded

16

lessons and independent learning, all differentiated to each pupils stage of development, to support and complement our families adjusting to a ‘new normal’ of juggling work, home, children and school all under one roof. Following considerable planning and preparation by our staff we welcomed back our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & 6 classes in June, enriching our pupils learning with that all important social interaction whilst still maintaining social distancing. This was achieved by making the most of our classrooms to create safe and secure bubbles, staggered drop off and pick up times with temperature checks for all pupils and staff on arrival, a comprehensive system of one-way corridors, extra hygiene stations and personal resources for each child. After a further relaxation of national restrictions we were able to bring back our Year 5s part-time and enable all other year groups the opportunity to have time in school before the end of the school year. We are now busy planning for the safe return of all of our pupils in September, following the new government guidance, but with an ever changing situation as this pandemic has been we are fully prepared to ensure the consistent provision of an excellent education for our pupils no matter the challenges of the future. To discover more about Staines Prep, contact our admission team on admissions@stainesprep.co.uk for a virtual tour.

Best of both worlds The world has changed, the way we work has changed, just a few short months ago how many people really stopped to think about their work/life balance? Those looking at slowly returning to a daily commute after months of working from home now have a choice to make, the daily grind of early mornings, and a long commute into London (not to mention the expense). It's enough to make you wonder who would choose to do this, having experienced the benefits of working from home. The endless tea is just one of the pros. That said, working from home is not always the utopia it sometimes made out to be - so, is there another way? YES! A local serviced office is a brilliant option for business owners who are looking for a short walk or a healthy cycle to work and time flexibility at the same time while working from a professional environment.

focused on B2B, well, there is a certain level of professionalism that is expected, and rightly so. We have all been amused by some of the epic work from home fails we have seen over the past few weeks. If you have never worked from home and suddenly had to make it work, it can be a bit of an eye-opener. No doubt, many professionals are looking forward to getting back into the office! Wherever that may be. People need space, to think, to work, to plan, to talk, to collaborate, to host Zoom calls and virtual meetings, and that is not always easy to do from home, especially when the kitchen table has become to the new office. It has worked the past few months because it had to, but is it a long term solution? Your Home Office Away From Home.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is incredibly important, as is the ability to work in an environment that suits your business and your clients. If you have a company or work for that is

Love Local Spelthorne One unexpected but welcome outcome from the Coronovirus lockdown is the way in which many small businesses have been able to adapt so that they can keep trading. We’ve seen cafes become grocers, restaurants develop collection and take-away services almost overnight, shops develop online and e-commerce stores, and salon owners becoming YouTube and Instagram stars as they share their skills and expertise with their audiences. How lovely it has been to see queues outside our local butchers, bakers, grocers, and other local shops. A positive for sure. Here at The TW Magazine, we believe that shopping locally plays a vital role, and no matter what our world will look like in the future, we should all carry on supporting our local shops and businesses , especially in the coming months. Just in case you need a reason to, here are five reasons why shopping local matters so much.

vulnerable, young people, and those without access to private transport. Plus, the more money that local councils make in rent and rates, the more they can spend on supporting local infrastructure and public services. 2. Local small businesses add character to towns and villages A small business or boutique shop adds character to the city or town when you walk or drive by. In a world that has become increasingly dominated by chain stores, a local business’s branding is unique and often quirky, adding something different to the High Street, offering an alternative experience, and bringing a much-needed breath of fresh air into areas populated by generic stores and bigger companies. 3. Shopping local creates more job opportunities and encourages entrepreneurship A local business that becomes a success will grow, and as they grow, they’ll recruit more staff from the local area. Plus, their success will encourage and inspire other local businesses to open.

4. You get a more personalised service Local business owners are friendly and 1. It builds local communities & strengthens engaging; they get to know their customers local economies personally and can provide much better When you support a local business, you advice about their products and services. are supporting your friends, family, and Local traders value your business much neighbours. Local shops' availability is more since their survival depends on their especially important for the elderly, excellent reputation and repeat business. 22

The Local Magazine for Ashford, Laleham and Staines Upon Thames

Local businesses can adapt their products to suit your requirements, or source something bespoke for you, which big chains can't or won’t do. 5. It’s better for the environment Shopping local means less mileage and petrol costs for you and that benefits us all. Better still, no petrol costs if you can walk to the shops. Local shops often stock locally sourced goods, which not only supports the local economy but also reduces transport times and costs of the products, impacting their carbon footprint positively. Another positive has been the fresh air over the past few months. We know it's tempting to default to the big chains or to buy online. But shopping locally is usually just as cost-effective and convenient, plus you are supporting your local community, rather than putting money in nameless and faceless shareholders’ pockets. Now more than ever, please, SHOP LOCAL.

To make it easier than ever before to love, live and shop local, The TW Magazine is planning to launch a brand new online business and community directory for Spelthorne in the Autumn of 2020. Love Local Spelthorne will be an online showcase for all local businesses, trades, restaurants as well as promoting local jobs and events too. Spelthorne’s Lewis Hamilton in the making! Most youngsters enjoy having a go at corporate karting with a top speed of around 35mph. This was not enough for Mitchell Gibbons who is a 12-yearold student at the Magna Carta school. Mitch took up owner kart driving at the age of 8, now racing around at speeds of up to 90mph. Mitchell is the current British Champion in Honda Cadets. Over the last 12 months he has dominated this category winning many other Major National titles such as English Champion, Super Prix Champion, Festival Champion and other Club Championships. He has also received Driver of The Year for all categories which included adults, his name is on the trophy alongside many greats including Nigel Mansell. Last year McLaren attended an event looking for talent, Mitchell was the youngest driver selected to become a McLaren DNA Junior Driver. Mitchell trained at the McLaren HQ in Woking, they even allowed him to sit in one of Hamilton’s and Senna F1 winning cars.

Mitchell now has a place in one of the world top teams Dan Holland Racing, which he aspired to join since he started karting. He has made a double jump because of his talent into the Junior X30 category racing against some juniors aged 17-years old. Already only after a few months he is on the same pace as some of the top drivers in Europe. Last month Mitch was testing with his team and they were lucky enough to have current F1 drivers Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz join them. He has met many

26

of his idols including Jenson Button and David Couthard. Earlier in year he spent a whole weekend on and off the track testing with Touring Car driver Nicolas Hamilton who is the brother of Lewis Hamilton.
