Making The Most Of Your Visit To A Kitchen Showroom With the whole of the UK being in lockdown on and off for over a year now, it is no surprise that so many homeowners are wanting to redo their home’s interior. Spending so much time inside has caused many to get bored of their interior design and to start picking faults with every room. So, with restrictions beginning to ease and showrooms starting to open, lots of homeowners are planning some much-needed home improvements. It goes without saying that shopping online just isn’t the same as physically visiting a showroom, especially when you’re working on quite a big home improvement project. If you’re interested in giving your kitchen a new lease of life ready for when you can have family and friends round again this summer and you’re wanting to completely change this space, visiting a kitchen showroom really is a must. You can make the most of this visit by; Speaking with a kitchen design expert One of the best ways to make the most of your visit to a kitchen showroom is to speak with a kitchen design expert. Instead of simply wandering around the showroom and looking at the different displays, you should take advantage of the knowledgeable team who are on hand to help and get their professional advice and opinions on your kitchen project. Discussing your design ideas with a kitchen expert can really help you to bring your dream kitchen to life. Not to mention, they can show you what can be achieved and demonstrate the quality products and expert workmanship they’re able to offer, ensuring that you don’t miss out on anything during your visit. Taking pictures of things you like Many turn to the internet for inspiration when

4

they’re redesigning their kitchen these days, but arguably, visiting a showroom and physically walking around displays can inspire you much more than any Pinterest board, for example. However, to ensure you don’t forget anything that you loved in a showroom, it is worthwhile having your phone camera to hand. It can be so useful to take pictures of things you like when you’re visiting a kitchen showroom, whether this is a kitchen cabinet colour or a worktop material or a tile pattern. Don’t forget to take pictures of the smaller things too like kitchen taps and cabinet handles, these details are just as important for a final design. Looking at finishes and feeling materials Arguably, one of the best things about visiting a kitchen showroom is that you’re able to see the different colours and finishes in person. As you’re probably well aware, things can look completely different on the internet and going to a showroom is one of the easiest ways to avoid disappointment when you’re redesigning your kitchen. Whilst you’re in a showroom, don’t just look at the different materials available for your kitchen cabinets or worktops, feel the difference as well. This may sound quite strange, but feeling the materials can give you an indication of their quality and it can also help you to decide whether or not they’re right for your home. Touch is an important sense that you can’t use when shopping online so make the most of it when you’re in a kitchen showroom. Here at Ashford Kitchens & Interiors, our showrooms are open and we are so happy to welcome customers back into our showrooms. Any visits to our showroom or a client’s home are treated with current COVID precautions in mind and we have put procedures in place to keep everyone safe and comfortable. We are currently holding showroom visits on an appointment basis.

Vegetable Growing As lovely as this time of year is, there is no doubt that your vegetable growing will be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas be on the decline. Rather than leaving the fun of growing your own until next year, it’s time to add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh. Even if you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home-grown vegetable and herbs. Ruby chard These brightly coloured plants create an attractive display as well as tasty food. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest, with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach. Mizuna Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing, Mizuna being a favourite. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown from now and into September. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea beetle away. Spring onions These grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil, so you can then harvest full-sized versions in March. Chinese cabbage Another late-season stalwart, it is one of the fastest growers and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully

6

tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese-style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October. Carrots Some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container. French beans Grown at home, these are so much better than the supermarket’s offerings. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. Baby spinach These are perfect in salads and sandwiches and are tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and into September and in five to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves for cooking, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more. There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and, provided you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-andcome-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil. There...almost too much to eat!

Making An Entrance A hallway is like a handshake: the introduction to your home, creating a look and feel that should be both attractive and welcoming, as well as providing useful storage. Design and decorating Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors, which are also ideal for checking your reflection just before you leave the house. Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on floor space. Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Fabulous flooring Halls and stairs are high-traffic areas, so ensure that your flooring is non-slip, durable, resistant to dirt and simple to clean. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet is rarely used in hallways these days. Cosy and bright Underfloor heating is ideal for narrow halls but do check that it will be compatible with your flooring. Alternatively, you could opt for eye-catching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eye-catching modern type.

10

Key Largo Rattan Hallway Storage Bench, £299, www.mainefurniture.co.uk

Hall lighting doesn’t need to be bright enough for reading, but it should be welcoming and lead the eye into your home: it could be an amazing chandelier (given high enough ceilings) or a series of recessed ceiling downlights. Storage Most people store a variety of things in their halls, from coats, scarves and hats to buggies and vacuum cleaners. The main choice is between built-in, hidden storage or open, display-type storage. The former is best when space is tight – slender floor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, country-style halls. Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and set of hooks. If space is really hard to find, it is even possible to build storage drawers into the treads of a wooden staircase.

Hi, I am Radhika, the Instructor of the Kumon Ashford Study Centre. Kumon is a worksheet based programme, with daily homework where students initially start off doing familiar calculations and reading then advance beyond school level, resulting in achieving very high academic results. At my centre we aim to get students at least 1 year above school level, within the first 8—10 months. In my eyes, it’s not always about the academic development, children often need to develop self confidence and motivation. The sense of responsibility and achievement becomes greater when they are happy with their work. I aim for every student to enjoy their learning experience and walk out with a smile by personally, running every session with my team and closely working with every child to ensure their programme is personalised to their individual needs. Kumon is an investment towards your child’s education, therefore, I would like to communicate the benefits of the programmes and make this opportunity available to as many children as possible so that together we can create bright, confident individuals who pursue their full potential.

Time For Tea A new tea room is opening its doors, serving up delicious delicacies and providing opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to gain employment skills. Carly Gammage meets Joanne and Chloe Smith, the Mum and daughter team behind it. This dynamic duo are brimming with excitement to have finally opened the doors to Dramatize Tea Room. Home baking became a passion for Chloe, 23yr old, during lockdown. “All the family would get involved. We would bake cakes, then have tea parties on Zoom to catch up with Chloe’s grandparents and friends. The delight Chloe had from making a cake for her family to eat and show off to her grandparents was inspiring. And that’s when the idea of the Tea Room came to life” recalls Jo. As well as serving delicious cakes and cream teas, Jo and Chloe want the Tea Room to spark change for people with learning disabilities. Chloe was born with Downs Syndrome and previous to starting their own business, Jo had become discouraged and frustrated from the numerous work experience placements her daughter had taken part in. “They never taught Chloe anything, or gave her the fundamental skills to be able to apply for a job in the big wide world” explains Jo. “She was always supported but never given the independence to carry things out herself; which meant she wasn’t given the confidence to think that she would ever earn a wage. As a parent, this has always been disheartening. However, over the years I have learned to accept this, until this

Eureka moment happened and we decided to open The Tea Room!” So, Jo sat down with Chloe and their good family friend Karen Davies, and together discussed the idea of starting their own business. Minus the slight struggles of Chloe having to keep it a secret from her friends, the trio have not looked back. Thanks to Jo and Karen’s passion, Dramatize Tea Room offers work experience and training for adults with learning disabilities to progress to paid employment. “We’ll teach individuals kitchen skills, including how to bake and prepare orders, as well as serving customers front of house. Which will enable everyone to partake in a full and active role in our community” says Jo. Afternoon Tea starts from £20, a selection of loose-leaf tea or barista coffee and freshly made finger sandwiches, cakes and scones are served on vintage china and presented on beautiful white linen tablecloths. (Vegan and Gluten Free options also available.) If you’re coming with the family, youngsters can enjoy their own Children’s Afternoon Tea whilst playing with the beautiful wooden tea-sets. We’ll however, be coming with friends and making the most of the Prosecco or G&T Afternoon Tea option! It looks delicious! Dramatize Tea Room opened their doors on 29th May. Visit them 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesdays – Saturdays at 52 Hetherington Road, Charlton Village, Shepperton, TW17 0SP. Hanging Baskets Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year. They make fabulous hanging baskets and planters. Choose a good-sized basket (easier to keep moist than a smaller one) and a hanging-basket liner, or a good-sized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multi-purpose compost is essential for excellent results. The range of plants is vast, so carefully consider the colours and textures: decide on subtle or brash and bold, and whether you want to coordinate the flowers with other garden features. To get started with your planting, place your basket in a large flowerpot, as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fit the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up to the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a base of broken flowerpots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within around 10cm of the pot rim. Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly. An upright plant such as a fuchsia or pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container, as it helps to give your planting height and structure. Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket. Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fingers to firm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps.

18

Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. Finally give your basket or pot a few days’ ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine.

Tips Never let the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with a rose attached or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose. If the container does become too dry, sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides. Regularly remove faded flowers as this will help to encourage the plants to continue producing more flowers. Check regularly for any pests such as greenfly and treat the problem promptly. When plants are tightly crammed together, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark. Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will help to encourage more flowers to develop.

These 15 hours are funded by the government and are free to parents of 3 year olds. The nursery does offer places to children from 2 years old and, if space allows, can offer children the opportunity to attend for the whole week, subject to fees. Mum’s the word It’s time for a social recall as restrictions lift and toddler and baby events finally get to reopen their doors. A report released by the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) earlier this year showed that new mums, both during and after pregnancy, have been faced with a greater likelihood of poor mental health due to the pandemic. These results will come as no surprise to many. New parenthood is lifechanging for a whole host of reasons. With playgroups having been closed since March 2020, forming friendships, support networks and finding somewhere to go to entertain your little-one has become all that harder. With restrictions lifting there’s no better time to get you and bump, baby or toddler out of those four walls and into one of our beloved local playgroups and toddler events. We’ve put together a list of our favourites to grab a much needed cuppa and chat with other mums at, while your little one plays with their peers. Carer & Toddler Group at St Marys Church, Staines – Wednesdays (10am – 12pm). Donations of £2 per family. Re-opening Weds 15th September. This longstanding playgroup has been run by the same group of lovely ladies for nearly 40 years and is highly recommended. With a baby area and toddler toys, ride-on toys in the church, painting table, book corner, a very catchy song time with Ellen on the guitar and a themed craft rounding off the session, there is much to do while you drink your cuppa and sprog enjoys their fruit (all included). Diddy Disciples follows for those wanting to stay for a bible story. Contact: www.stmaryandstpeterstaines.co.uk Toddler Tuesdays at Christ Church, Staines – Tuesdays term time (9.30am -11.30am). £2 per adult with up to 2 children. Re-opening 14th September. One of our favourite things about this playgroup is when the little ones sit around children’s tables together at snack-time and enjoy fruit and a drink

(all included in the price). The baby area, an array of toddler toys including a bouncy castle and arts and craft tables will provide plenty of opportunity for you to sip your tea before song time at the end of the session. With free entry and the best spread around, we’d recommend arriving when doors open at 10.15, as there is limited capacity. Peter Puppet leads song time before children get comfy on beanbags and listen to a bible story. Craft and toys are also on offer to enjoy. Contact: www.opendoorchurchsunbury.com Pebble Rhymetime at the Library, Ashford – Weds, Friday, Saturdays (10.30-11am). Stanwell – Saturdays (10.30-11am). Camping on a Budget Overseas holidays are looking limited at best this year, with many people unable to afford to go anyway. However, it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely. Camping can be great fun and very affordable. You’ll need to apply to some creativity to sourcing your equipment, as an hour on one of the many outdoor websites could have you thinking that the whole event is going to be far too expensive – especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll do it more than once. Firstly the tent; Take advantage of somebody else’s impulse buy by visiting second-hand sites to see what you can snap up – eBay of course, but don’t forget Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Sleeping bags might be necessary if you are hiking across the mountains, but chances are you’ll be driving to your camping site, so take your own duvets and pillows with some old covers and that will be perfectly adequate. A night’s sleep on the hard ground isn’t comfortable though, so you’ll need to find something to lie on. Cushions from outdoor chairs or a beach lilo will be good enough for children, but you might want to invest in an inflatable mattress for the adults. Other equipment such as a gas stove, water containers and plastic plates might be offered to you if you put a wanted advert on Gumtree or on Freecycle. A polite plea to your friends could produce a surprising haul for you to borrow, too. With British weather being what it is, an inexpensive gazebo will give you the reassurance of shelter from the sun or rain. A fun thing to do is to hang battery-powered fairy lights from the

30

gazebo frame, making an atmospheric leisure/ party area for after dark. You might not be able to look your glamorous best while camping and really, why would you? It’s time to get back to nature. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t want to clean up every day and proper toilet facilities are a must. Fortunately, these days all but the most rural sites will have a shower and toilet block. Now onto the web to decide which site to go to. www.pitchup.com has 5,000 UK and Ireland sites listed and has handy filters that allow you to highlight those 'must have' features you're after. Still not convinced? If you think this sounds like more hassle than it’s worth, you might want to consider ‘glamping’. It’s still sleeping in an open area surrounded by trees, but the living accommodation is provided for you. Many sites offer tipis, yurts, wooden huts or even a gypsy caravan. This is going to cost more, of course, but is still very affordable. Finally, it's worth remembering, you won't be the only one looking for a cheap summer break, so go online and book your pitch now.

Starting School New beginnings are on the way. Make sure your preparations are on the mark with our handy tick list. Our local schools have shown over this last year to be doing a great job at prioritising students’ and staff’s wellbeing. However if you’re a new parent whose just had to pick a school in the midst of the pandemic, where visiting and doing the usual meets and greets haven’t been possible, it must have been a scary task! Starting school is a nerve-wracking prospect but never more so than this September when we’re faced, perhaps still hidden behind a mask, with the current Covid pandemic. As we go to print, the lifting of restrictions are still up in the air, but many of our amazing local schools have been working tirelessly to put plans in place for all eventualities. Not only to help settle your children in to their new school but also keeping them safe whilst in their care. Many schools have tried to tackle the issue of not meeting in person or being able to visit the school, by adding virtual tour links to their school website so you and your child can have a look around. Although the usual new parents welcome evenings, open days or home visits may not be able to take place, many schools will be offering smaller open day sessions instead (subject to restrictions), much like they did last year. Schools will also be sending out letters of communication, doing their best to deal with any concerns you may have before they get to meet you. If you have questions though, do contact your school office for guidance. This year has been unprecedented, odd to say the least, but many of our schools have learnt valuable lessons from this last year and are in good stead to offer your child the very best start to their school life. The TW Magazine would like to wish all families starting primary and secondary school in September the very best of luck. Carly Gammage

32

Getting ready for school tick list: If you’re not able to visit the school in person, take advantage of the virtual tours available on your school’s website. Ensure your child can go to the toilet independently and can wash their hands effectively by themself. Don’t leave buying new shoes till the last minute and encourage your child to wear them around the house to break them in before school starts. As well as walk-in appointments to get your children’s feet measured, both Clarks (01784 459385) and Johnson’s Shoes (01784 469474) in Staines allow you to book back-to-school appointments to avoid the queues. In the lead up to September, walk past school with your child, pointing out the gate they’ll go in at and the playground where they’ll be playing with their new friends to help get them familiarised. Order your school uniform in good time – School Uniform Direct in Staines (www.schooluniformdirect.co.uk) supplies 25 of the local schools. Shepperton Sports & Ski (www.sheppertonsportsandski.co.uk) covers the remainder of primary and secondary schools in the area.

The Local Magazine for Ashford, Laleham and Staines Upon Thames

Invest in clothes labels! Coats, cardigans, jumpers, bookbags, even shoes – anything that is easily taken off should be labelled so it can be returned to the right owner. Let your child choose an easy to spot water bottle which they’ll be able to recognise in class, and don’t forget to label it! (Can you spot a trend yet?) Join your school’s Facebook page, it’s a great way to keep on track of upcoming school events and to see what your children are up to at school. Become a member of the PTA Facebook page for your school. Volunteering with PTA events is not only a great way to help raise valuable funds that will benefit your children but also a fantastic way to meet new parents and feel part of the school community. Talk about school as a family, make it the exciting prospect it should be. If you are experiencing nerves, try and remember you and your child are not alone, when. September comes they’ll be lots of other like-minded faces all filled with excitement, hope and a little bit of first day jitters.

Pan-Fried Mackerel Fillet With Lemon Spring Vegetables Serves 2 Prep time 15 minutes Cooking time 15 minutes Ingredients • 25g butter • 1 banana shallot, peeled and sliced • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed • 400g mixed fresh vegetables like broad beans, carrots, peas, spring greens, broccoli • 100ml stock • Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper • 150g crème fraiche • 3-4 sprigs dill, roughly chopped • 1/2 tbsp olive oil • 2 large mackerel fillets • Lemon wedges, to serve 34

1. Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. 2. Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice, and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes. 3. Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes. 4. Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillets in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side. 5. Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

Summer Hair Care Strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Try taking a gentler approach to your hairstyling in the summer months. Use a mild shampoo and when you do wash your hair, finish with a cool or cold rinse to seal the cuticles. Try to limit hair treatments such as bleaching, and cut back on the use of heated hair styling tools such as curlers and hair straighteners. If your hair is long enough, put it into a loose bun and tuck the ends out of sight, as this is the most vulnerable part. Pulling your hair back in this way also mean you don’t have a parting, which will prevent sunburn on your scalp – although sunscreen all around the hairline is important.

If you don’t have long hair, have a parting and don’t want to wear a hat, it’s essential that you Summer Hair Care apply sun lotion to your scalp. Your hair might look a little greasy during the day, but that’s better than the bad dandruff look that a peeling scalp will give you. Before going into a pool or the sea, wet your hair with plain water as this will reduce the absorption of chlorine or salt. After your swim, rinse your hair with plain water again and use a mild shampoo at the end of each day, to ensure those chemicals and salt aren’t continuing to do their worst.

Sun-Faked The medical and beauty advice is to save your skin and not to sit in direct sun. So a golden glow might not be healthy, but it certainly looks it and fake tanning is more popular than ever. Follow our tips here to go into summer with a golden glow. • Allow at least six hours between applying tan and going to bed, and wear loose clothes for the rest of the day.

orange patches. This is best done the night before to allow your skin to settle and allow at least 24 hours between waxing and tanning.

• If you’re new to self-tanning or have pale skin, it’s a good idea to start with a gradual tanning product. The result is fairly subtle meaning it’s forgiving of beginners’ mistakes.

• Be really generous with your moisturiser and ensure that it’s fragrance and colour free. Pay particular attention to knees, ankles and elbows.

• You need a fair amount of space, a full-length mirror and lots of natural light. Put a towel on your carpet and any furnishings you might touch. Sun-Faked

• The actual tan application is the point at which you might decide a beauty salon is the best option for a full-body and even finish. But if you prefer DIY, wearing gloves, start with your feet and methodically cover every inch of your skin evenly. Finish with your hands.

• Exfoliation is essential if you are to avoid To advertise contact Carley: E: Carley@thetwmag.com
