The seed for this evening’s event was planted in 2018 when Faith Evans spoke at a BMI event titled How I Wrote That Song. Ms. Evans, widely recognized as one of the greatest vocalists in recording history, broke down her career of songwriting, vocal arranging and producing. She shocked the crowd and her fellow panelists as she went through her discography. Many people who love and admire Faith Evans don’t know that she wrote her hits. Tonight we change that.
Ken Performed Performed Performed Performed Performed
The Town Hall kicked off our Black History Month celebrations on February 12th with a choral festival that featured New York City high school choirs performing spirituals and gospel compositions by great composers and arrangers like Moses Hogan and Roland Carter. Three days later, we continued on with The Voice of Whitney: A Symphonic Celebration, marking the world debut of Pops of Color, New York City’s first Pops orchestra composed exclusively of musicians of color, performing selections from the vast catalogues of iconic artists of color. On February 18th, The Town Hall celebrated the James Baldwin Centennial and the 60th anniversary of the Baldwin/Buckley Cambridge debate with the New York premiere of THE TONGUE & THE LASH, a chamber opera by Damien Sneed and Karen Chilton, and A Return to Civic Discourse, a panel discussion moderated by Edwidge Danticat.
And today, we close the month with a celebration of an artist who encapsulates everything and everyone who came before her: Faith Renée Evans. From the sounds of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Newark where she got her start, to the recordings of Gospel greats The Clark Sisters that she studied incessantly, to the 60s folkies like the Mamas and Papas that she learned from at home with her mother, the entirety of the American Songbook has shaped Faith Evans.
As a vocal arranger and songwriter, she cut her teeth in sessions with Christopher Williams, Al B. Sure, Usher and Mary J. Blige. By the time she released her self-titled debut in 1995, Faith Evans was already a highly regarded songwriter and industry professional. When she dropped Faith, she had writing credits on fourteen of the fifteen songs, including the iconic “You Used to Love Me” and “Soon As I Get Home.” Since that historic debut, Ms. Evans has continued to be the lead writer on all of her albums.
Perhaps it is the grandeur of Faith Evans’s honey-toned soprano that has commanded much of the spotlight, leaving little room for her accomplishments as a songwriter and arranger. Faith Evans has long been one of the most influential voices in R&B–a singer’s singer, her albums sacred texts for vocalists. Handpicked by Whitney Houston to sing on The Waiting to Exhale (1995) soundtrack, Faith Evans has been embraced by the vocal geniuses who came before her, among them Chaka Khan and Karen Clark Sheard. And since her debut, performers have studied Faith Evans’s tone, her melisma, and her phrasing the way that Faith Evans studied The Clark Sisters, Shirley Murdock, and Cece Winans.
Much has been written about Faith Evans’ voice, but her extensive collection of songs also merits study and celebration. As we look back on three decades of Faith Evans in this industry, tonight is a night to celebrate the songs and the woman who wrote them.
Thank you, dearest Faith, for trusting us with this tribute.
And to the brilliant girl from Newark writing melodies on a Casio keyboard, we say: CONGRATULATIONS! You made it. You changed the world.
Melay Araya , Artistic Director

ABOUT THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL
Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 100 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory won by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Siance, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
