TAYLOR MAC’S HOLIDAY SAUCE

Christmas as calamity – Ibsen Award winner, MacArthur Fellow, and Pulitzer Prize finalist, Taylor Mac, takes on the holidays to celebrate the season in all of its dysfunction. There is more to the holidays than rampant gift giving – in Taylor’s world, creativity and imagination are their own spirituality. Taylor Mac reminds us of the collective power of our chosen families, a message that rings true in spite of capitalism’s attempt to hijack the holidays. For this production, Taylor Mac is joined by longtime collaborators, designer Machine Dazzle, Music Director Matt Ray and a spectacular band to reframe the songs you love and the holidays you hate. “Mac casts a cathartic spell… for all those who find caroling, eggnog and enforced family visits destabilizing” (Los Angeles Times)

About the Program
“John Cassavetes’ Opening Night ” is the first stage musical with music, lyrics, and orchestrations by Rufus Wainwright. It premiered in London at the Gielgud Theater in the spring of 2024. The book and direction were by Ivo van Hove. It is based on the 1977 movie Opening Night by American avant-garde director John Cassavetes. It tells the story of an actress, Myrtle Gordon, played by Cassavetes’ wife, Gena Rowlands, who is premiering a play written for her that is about a woman coming to terms with aging. Myrtle Gordon does not come to terms with her own aging and rebels against the play and throws the entire production into jeopardy. A young female fan asking her for an autograph at the stage door gets killed by a car as she runs off onto the street. Myrtle is being haunted by the young girl. On opening night, she arrives completely drunk but ultimately does what she does best: act and improvise. Part “All About Eve” Opening Night is the story of an actress who risks madness for her truth.
Rufus Wainwright has reached out to a group of friends and colleagues in the music and musical theater world to perform the songs from Opening Night in a one-nightonly special concert at Town Hall, which will support the ACLU. Jason Hart, who was in Rufus’ band for many years, is the music director and is leading the orchestra that will perform Wainwright’s original West End arrangements. Wainwright will join the cast of talented performers and sing some of the songs himself, and act as the MC, leading through the evening and explaining the story of the musical.

A NOTE FROM Pete Townshend
I was blown away by this show when I saw it in London in 2024. It is pure music theatre in one breath, and the high drama of celebrity anxiety and depression in the other. The songs are superb, finely focussed and all working to drive the story along, but exciting and entertaining at the same time. Rufus Wainwright is a polymath, a supremely audacious artist, but music is always his prime language and with this production he exercises his songwriting skills with wit, courage and a perfect sense of mischievous humour. Here we see his creation of a vulnerable actress, struggling with her career at a critical stage, and at the same time battling with her love life in mid-life. All the time she works to make perfect the opening night of a new Broadway musical. It reminded me of my own life in music and music theatre and the uncertain lives of so many actors I know. The stresses and strains of it all are monstrous, but once the stage is set, and the lights go up in front of an audience, magic happens. Rufus has retooled this Hollywood story for our modern day, where nothing is certain in the music business, and every star can crash down without warning at any moment. And yet the story is full of hope and joy and the idea that in order to succeed at anything we have to be prepared to fail. Opening Night holds a mirror to the very nature of music theatre itself.

A NOTE FROM Rufus Wainwright
For me, John Cassavetes’s movie Opening Night has long been a shining beacon representing both excellence in cinema and the might of live theatre. An intense marriage of film and stage it is about a very personal mental and creative survival that I think we can all relate to on a very deep human level. I’ve been waiting for ages to write my first musical and with this fantastic story plus the incomparable Sheridan Smith, not to mention the incredible Ivo van Hove, I don’t think I could have aimed any higher.

Rufus Wainwright
Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists, songwriters, and composers of his generation. The New York-born, Montreal-raised singer-songwriter has released 11 studio albums to date, three DVDs, and numerous live albums including the GRAMMY® nominated Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hal l. He has collaborated with artists such as Elton John, Burt Bacharach, Miley Cyrus, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, Pet Shop Boys, Heart, Carly Rae Jepsen, Robbie Williams, Jessye Norman, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Sting, and producer Mark Ronson, among many others. He has written two operas and numerous songs for movies and TV.
His 2020 GRAMMY® nominated studio album of original songs, Unfollow the Rules, finds Wainwright at the peak of his powers, entering artistic maturity with passion, honesty, and a new-found fearlessness. In 2023, he embarked on a journey to his family folk roots with his GRAMMY® nominated album Folkocracy featuring reinvented folk duets with artists like Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile, John Legend and Anohni and many more.
His first musical of John Cassavetes’ Opening Night for the West End with Ivo van Hove premiered at the Gielgud Theater in March 2024. During this time he also completed his Dream Requiem, which premiered with the Orchestre Philharmonique de la Radio France in June of 2024 and featured Meryl Streep as the narrator. The recording of the performance was released via Warner Classics in January 2025. Co-commissioners for the Dream Requiem are the Master Chorale in Los Angeles, the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Orchestra in Ireland, and the Royal Ballet London.

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 100 years. A group of suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921, The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory won by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. Upon its dedication in 1921, The League for Political Education opened the building you are now sitting in with the watchwords:
“It does not matter who you are, what you are, or from where you come, you are welcome.”
That year, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: the US debuts of Strauss and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much, much more

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation is grateful to Rufus Wainwright, the cast, crew, and production team of "Opening Night,” The Town Hall, and you for your support of our work.
The ACLU dares to create a more perfect union –beyond one person, party, or side. Our mission is to realize this promise of the United States Constitution for all and expand the reach of its guarantees. With LGBTQ+ rights and much more at risk, we’re in courts and communities across the country to protect everyone’s rights – and we need you with us.
