ABOUT DARLENE LOVE

The definitive voice of the 1960’s girl groups and a hand-picked favorite of legendary rock and roll producer Phil Spector, Darlene Love is widely considered the voice that launched a hundred hits. Some of her top records include “Wait Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure The Boy I Love,” “Today I Met, The Boy I’m Gonna Marry” and “He’s A Rebel.”
On Monday, July 26, Darlene Love celebrated her 80th birthday with a brandnew show, “Darlene Love: The First 80 Years,” that took place at City Winery New York featuring special live appearances by Steven Van Zandt, Paul Shaffer, Mark Chapin as well as surprise video birthday messages from Darlene’s friends Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Cyndi Lauper and Whoopi Goldberg.
This was her first live performance since December 2019. “I was so excited to reunite with my band and singers,” she exclaims from her suburban home outside of New York City. “Lord knows it’s been quite a journey! I’ve encountered many career highs and lows. I’ve survived poverty, parenthood, a heart attack, a hip replacement, COVID and the loss of many loved ones including my beloved sister this past year. However, I have still my health and my faith, and for that I am thankful.”
Darlene Love also has her voice, the one The New York Times describes as “embedded in the history of rock and roll as Eric Clapton’s guitar and Bob Dylan’s lyrics.”
Her longtime friend Bruce Springsteen, echoes the sentiments, “(The hits) sound as steam-rolling fresh today as the day they were released,” he says. Springsteen sang a duet of “A Fine, Fine Boy” with Darlene Love at the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert. Two years later, she was officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by her other longtime friend, Bette Midler.
In addition to the rock and roll hits, Darlene is the voice behind the holiday classics, “All Alone on Christmas” from Home Alone 2 and “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home),” a song she performed annually on David Letterman’s The Late Show a record 28 years. In 2015, after The Late Show ended, Darlene began performing “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” annually on ABC-TV’s The View. In 2019, she and Anna Kendrick performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon using classroom instruments.
Love is also famous for singing backup for artists like Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Cher, and Aretha Franklin, as chronicled in 2013’s, 20 Feet from Stardom. Mrs. Love accepted the Academy Award for the film, and the Grammy for its soundtrack.
She’s a stage and film actress, too, starring as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray on Broadway and as Miss Sherman with the Australian production of Fame. Darlene Love played the role of Trish Murtaugh, the wife of Danny Glover’s character, in all four Lethal Weapon movies and this past holiday season, she was featured in the hit Netflix film, The Christmas Chronicles 2, starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
Darlene Love’s candor and her inimitable spirit — the product of her roots as a minister’s daughter —will be on full display at The First 80 Years and for many years to come.

TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL
Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
