Welcome to a new year of live music at The Stoller Hall

As well as The Stoller Hall being a world-leading music venue where we are proud to host the finest international talent, we are also rooted in the ethos of learning and collaboration.

Through our recently launched Emerging Artist Scheme, kindly supported by The Haworth Trust, we are working with five groups of early career musicians to help them develop their musical careers. As well as performing on The Stoller Hall stage, we will work with these groups to develop their audiences, capture video and audio, and will mentor them on their marketing, fundraising and management skills.

Our mission is to enrich lives and provide opportunities for people of all backgrounds to be inspired by heritage, music and learning. Our younger audiences can enjoy world-class entertainment and learn about music and instruments along the way with our Stoller Story Sounds workshops and children’s show, Izzy Gizmo.

There’s something for all ages too. Our classical series will include performances from chamber ensembles and orchestras - continuing our Mozart Made in Manchester series, as well as highlights like Massenet’s Méditation and Brahms’ Symphony No 4.

International names such as musician Tommy Blaize (of Strictly Come Dancing fame), comedian Gary Meikle, folk musician Chris Wood, classical crossover artists the Ayoub Sisters and Down for The Count’s Great American Songbook all have a space in our inspiring live events programme.

And don’t forget Friday 25 November is Fee Free Friday, where we remove all booking fees across our entire programme!

We wish you a brilliant year of live music ahead.

You can now enjoy a new display of artwork in The Oglesby Atrium, from the University of Salford’s School of Arts & Media students. The gallery wall is open one hour before live performances and during the interval.

Sound/Noise/Music/Soundscape 14.10.22 - 19.01.23

The Oglesby Atrium

Sound/Noise/Music/Soundscape is the latest exhibition by seven Fine Art students exploring the aesthetics of sound. Visualising the invisible has fascinated artists for over a century. Here we find the artists explore the silence of a stone sculpture, the soundscape of a house/home in the landscape, the inner, emotional sounds of the body/brain, and images that capture abstract synaesthesia.

Art/Music/Pattern/Structure

20.01.23 - 21.04.23

The Oglesby Atrium

The next exhibition with students from University of Salford’s School of Arts & Media explores visual and music patterns and structures with a direct appeal to our senses.

Nurturing and supporting emerging young talent is a huge part of our mission, alongside presenting incredible live music on our stage. Our recently launched emerging artist scheme supports emerging and early career artists from a range of genres and backgrounds. Over the next 12 months we’ll build a series of emerging artist events that cover a diverse mix of musical genres, including classical, folk and jazz.

Along the way we’ll provide an invaluable platform to perform, develop audiences, capture video and audio footage, and develop marketing, fundraising and management skills to support their career development.

This year’s musicians include: Asaka Quartet, Ensemble Renard, Helena Ricci, Phoebe Rayner and Smorgaschord Collective.

Watch this space for news on the project!

RIOPY is a pianist, composer and multi-millionstreaming artist who wants to change the world, one note at a time.

Born in rural France, his mother left home with him when he was six months old, eventually joining a cult, where family ties were discouraged and obedience to the head guru was paramount. Deprived of any outside culture, young Jean Philippe taught himself to play on an abandoned piano when he was two, making up songs in his head, then performing them. RIOPY was drawn to the piano as it allowed him to focus on creating music from scratch, quiet his mind from his OCD anxieties and to retreat into his own private world.

‘I understood tones, sounds and numbers, because I’d always been counting,’ he says. ‘Playing piano was the only place I felt safe. I discovered something new every time I sat down at the piano. It was the only thing I enjoyed doing. And even if I wasn’t at the piano, I’d play music in my head to cope with stress.’

After ten years of travels and many fateful encounters, such as Chris Martin giving him a piano, RIOPY began to compose for cinema and adverts – but he still faced the struggle of chronic depression. This vulnerability emerged in the music of his first two albums RIOPY and Tree of Light which became successes worldwide, powered by personal recommendation and word of mouth.

Most blurbs are written in the 3rd person so they’ll be like ‘Gary is this, Gary is that, you can expect this from Gary’ well I’m writing this myself so, this will be MY 3rd show, or 2.5 as I’m calling it. I’ve had several top professionals and industry people tell me over the years that I shouldn’t swear as much or be as crude or as edgy as I am but guess what, they likely don’t know that as a kid growing up in the care system I was told that I’d be either dead or in jail by the time I was 30. So I tend not to listen to others and do things my way, it’s gotten me this far after all.

So, this show will be a continued celebration of me being me. I’m going to remain to be playfully dark and as always do what I do best which is to be relatable, honest and give you an insight to what it’s like to be me, a young single grandad who’s passionate about making his audience laugh and then be available for hugs at the end if anyone needs or wants one.

‘Phil Lassiter is one of the dopest musicians I know, and the best horn arranger of all time’ —Bobby Sparks

Philip Lassiter is ready to bring his incredible groove and funk to Manchester for an explosive live performance.

Former member of Prince and the New Power Generation, Philip Lassiter is a household name in the music industry and an 8-time Grammy Awardwinning arranger. To attempt to truly define the bombastic brilliance of this jazz trumpeter turned singer-songwriter would be like trying to catch a bear with a mousetrap. A multi-facted, multi-instrumentalist, Philip mixes socio-political messaging with humorous, earthy storytelling and some forays into old school funk. Along with detours into one-drop reggae and a dreamy, romantic love song, Philip’s latest project is a triumph of deep groove, swaggering horns and soul-stirring vocal performances.

In partnership with: The Manchester Chamber Concerts Society. ‘Works are played with searing intensity by the fine young Romanian quartet’ —The Sunday Times

The Arcadia Quartet are one of the most exciting string quartets of their generation. Praised for their emotionally intense performances, in 2020 the Quartet began recording all of the 17 Weinberg Quartets.

Highly acclaimed since their release, the recordings have received 5-star reviews in BBC Music Magazine and have been named Disc of the Week by BBC Radio 3.

Weinberg has been considered as the third great Russian composer of the 20th Century alongside Prokofiev and Shostakovich, who was also his mentor and great friend.

From one of the original string quartets by Haydn to Weinberg’s serenade-like No.6 and Beethoven’s No.7, this concert promises to be a string quartet masterclass.

‘The renaissance man of English folk’ —The Irish Times

Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the unofficial history of the English-speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables.

A self-taught musician, composer and songwriter, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as ‘Anon’.

His most recent album So Much to Defend has received wide critical acclaim and includes reflections on minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society. Hollow Point; his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezez, won a BBC Folk Award (he’s won six) and emphatically secured Chris’ place as a serious speech-master.

Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem.
