Welcome to our Autumn 2022 programme! There are sure to be some unforgettable live music moments which I hope you will find inspiring, and I look forward to sharing with you!

Our comedy strand is also guaranteed to entertain – TV favourites, Mitch Benn and Scott Bennett come to the stage alongside our ongoing partnership with The Comedy Store.

We’ve stuck to our core mission, bringing you international household names as well as supporting and working with emerging young talent.

There’s live music for families too as we bring more family concerts and workshops to you including Professor Lightbulb’s Marvellous Inventions. And our Story Sounds series will continue for our younger visitors and their grown-ups!

Classical and chamber music starts in October when we will be joined by one of the greatest cellists of all time – Steven Isserlis. Steven’s performance will be followed by established musicians such as The Heath Quartet, early career musicians like the recent Parkhouse Award winners Trio Bohémo, and Chetham’s School of Music students who will perform side by side with the Brodsky Quartet - as well as with our Symphony Orchestra in their own right. Our expanding jazz programme continues to bring you some of the highest profile names in international jazz like Evelyn Glennie, The Printmakers and the James Taylor Quartet, as well as remarkable skills from the likes of the Isfar Sarabski and Natalie Duncan. Folk and contemporary music leaps off the page too – both Lindisfarne and Show of Hands will be joining us this season, alongside harmonica wizard, Will Pound, and the driving rhythms of Megson. And of course (after a few reschedules!) we’re finally able to bring you the extraordinary powerhouse and Grammy Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir.

And then there’s Christmas! We are here and ready to get you in the Christmas spirit – with Carols from Kantos, Artisan Markets, David Gibb and his Family Jukebox, Swing into Christmas and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra - there’s something for everyone, and all ages, to get you in the mood! New events are being added to the programme regularly, so keep up to date by following The Stoller Hall on social media, and don’t forget to sign up to our mailing list via our website – stollerhall.com. We look forward to seeing you soon!

We cried. I held you tight. I said, ‘Friend, stay as long as you like’. And we sat up and talked all night. Inspired by conversations between members of LGBTQ+ low voice choir The Sunday Boys and female voice choir Meraki, Stay as Long as You Like is a new choral work for choir and orchestra celebrating platonic friendships between straight women and LGBTQ+ men. Two intimate stories alternate across the 45 minute work: one from the perspective of a gay man’s friendship forged at university, the other from a young woman who finds solace in the peculiarity and intellect of an older man. Meanwhile interludes evoke broader sentiments of friendship celebrating the unique bonds we make with one another and the memories we share.

Handsome Family have written some of the most haunting and beautiful songs in American music. During a 30-year career, Brett and Rennie Sparks have created songs that transform the mundane landscape of modern life into a place of mysterious portent.

Join our Deputy General Manager for a behind the scenes tour of The Stoller Hall. You’ll learn about the construction of our world-class concert hall and go behind the scenes to see what goes into making our incredible concerts happen.

Handsome Family songs take place in parking lots and big box stores, under overpasses and in airports. They sing about Custer’s last stand and automatic lawn sprinklers in the same song. Rennie’s lyrics often focus on the myriad of creatures that live at the edges of the manmade world: the sparrows, rats, cockroaches and crows that share our cities.

From below the stage you will see our unique hydraulic stage extension, and you can learn how our world-class acoustics are designed, and see the banner hoists, lighting and sound installations. You will also experience a guided tour around the architectually stunning building that houses The Stoller Hall and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions of our knowledgeable team who have been involved since the design was conceived. Tours last approximately 45 minutes, and the bar will be open afterwards ready for the evening’s performance.

More than 2000 ships have foundered and sunk on the Goodwin Sands, a perilous sandbar that lies six miles off the Kent coast. Voices of the Sands is a dramatic cantata for three voices and harp. Performers invoke the sandbar, and the stories of those who have travelled and died there across the centuries, as well as the voices of seals and birds for whom it’s a place of refuge.

Presented in partnership with NQ Jazz.

Drawing on sea shanties, folktales, and found text, Voices of the Sands is as multitudinous and shifting as the sandbar itself, providing an acoustic anthology of this haunting place. In partnership with: The Manchester Chamber Concerts Society. ‘This is what nourishes the soul’ —The Times Starting this Autumn, we’re delighted to welcome back The Manchester Chamber Concerts Society. The new season of classical and chamber concerts begins with an incredible performance from Steven Isserlis. He will be joined by the Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson.

Acclaimed worldwide for his profound musicianship and technical mastery, British cellist Steven Isserlis enjoys a unique and distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster. The relationship of Mendelssohn and Schumann is fascinating. Mendelssohn employed Schumann as a teacher at his newlyformed conservatoire in Leipzig and conducted the premieres of Schumann’s first two symphonies. Schumann, for his part, looked up to the far more successful Mendelssohn, describing him as ‘a real God’. Musically, too, they make an endlessly intriguing pair, the contrast between them vividly illustrated by the sonatas in this programme: Schumann’s futuristic, tempestuous late violin sonata is in total contrast to Mendelssohn’s joyous masterpiece, representing the epitome of classical romanticism. Their recital concludes with well-loved shorter pieces by Moscheles and Chopin. Programme Mendelssohn Variations Concertantes for Cello & Piano, Op.17 Schumann (arr. Isserlis, Steven) Violin Sonata No.2, Op.121 — Moscheles Cello Sonata in E Major, Op.121 Chopin Introduction & Polonaise brillante in C Major, Op.3

Plosive Live presents…Nick Helm: What Have We Become?

James Taylor, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation, has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years. Still famed for upbeat, energetic live shows, he shows no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and, the band is, without a doubt, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today.

This is the future. The future is now. Join critically-acclaimed and multi awardwinning comedian Nick Helm as he embarks on a show so insightful, so honest, so legitimate that it will fix all of society’s problems and lead the way to a new plane of existence. As seen on Uncle (BBC Three), 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4) and Live at the Apollo (BBC Two). ‘A true comedy daredevil’ —Time Out

‘I always follow where the music takes me’ —Dustin O’Halloran American post-classical pianist and composer Dustin O’Halloran began his musical life early. Having taught himself to play piano at the age of seven, O’Halloran soon began writing his own music, inspired by the sounds emerging from his mother’s ballet lessons. Aside from releasing music as a recording artist, O’Halloran is a film and TV composer, as well as one half of ambient act A Winged Victory for the Sullen, an idiosyncratic, ambient orchestral project which he has performed around the world. From the deft electronic touches that embellish A Winged Victory For The Sullen’s graceful soundscapes, to the imaginative, evocative arrangements characterising his grander works, like Lumiere or Lion, O’Halloran has constantly displayed a canny knack for unlocking familiar but often intimate sentiments.

The path that Sarabski has been following for over two decades was laid in his childhood. His mother is a violin teacher, his father a great music connoisseur who, in addition to jazz, rock, soul and funk, also appreciates Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. In his music, Isfar Sarabski, the 31-yearold pianist, composer and arranger from Azerbaijan combines the adventurous nature of Nils Frahm with the dream-like music of Ólafur Arnald, plus influences from electronic, symphonic and jazz musicians including Martin Kohlstedt, Max Richter and Herbie Hancock. For him, genre boundaries are only there to connect them with one another through musical bridges.

‘Spectacular musicianship and technical brilliance’ —The Scotsman James has been working on putting together this programme for the last few years. It includes a huge variety of pieces, from classical to contemporary, many written in the romantic era or earlier, and all inspired by the environment. Messiaen literally transcribes the Wood Lark’s song and uses it as a basis for his piece. There are works inspired by water, stormy weather, moths, and even goldfish! There is The Gnat by Couperin, Moths by Ravel, and Landscape, Snow Storm and Beside a Spring by Liszt. These works extol the wonders and beauties of nature. Central to the recital then, is the placement of these works against The forest, the strand, the sea by LeFanu; a work which explores the more gritty realities facing the natural world today. An audible representation of the contrast between idealism and current reality.

Music of the Unseen is an interdisciplinary partnership between composer Bobbie-Jane Gardner and Academy award nominated filmmaker and photographer Brian Cross (B+). This collaboration celebrates the legendary musical contributions of composer-arrangers Charles Stepney & David Axelrod. It will culminate in an hour-long concert of interpretations of their music performed by a 17 piece ensemble including genre-liberated strings, horns and percussion, with live visuals and experimental film. Featuring special guest selectors, audiences are invited to join us for an after-show party with curated DJ sets inspired by the music of Axelrod and Stepney.

Blazing bagpipes, fiddle and accordions, electrically fused with funky rhythms and soulgripping songs Skerryvore represent the best in contemporary Scottish traditional music creating a trad-rock fusion for the 21st Century.

In this soulful live show, Natalie Duncan takes you on a journey across neo-soul, blues, R&B and nods to jazz. Distinguished by a unique sound, with incorporated elements from several other genres and influences, the artist finds inspiration from her own life experiences, as well as the world-class musicians she grew up around in creative cities.

Pioneering solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie is one of the world’s most celebrated performing artists. She joins Trio HLK, a group of the UK’s most creative musicians. This Scottish improvising ensemble’s interpretations of jazz standards are at times shimmering and cerebral, at others thunderous, intricate and harmonic with a veritable battery of percussion played by Evelyn Glennie. ‘Their deconstruction of jazz classics could easily have sounded mannered, but instead I found it genuinely complex, uncompromising, at times very beautiful, and above all deeply engaging. I’d never heard anything quite like it (a novel experience at a jazz gig) and was immediately hooked’ —Steven Osborne
