HETHER it was a big or intimate, Star Magic artists dominated the concert stage with their successful shows this 2016. There was the first time concert performers like Kim Chiu, who marked her 10th anniversary in the business via Chinita Princess: The FUNtasy Concert in April at KIA theater. Two months later, on July 9, her screen love team partner Xian Lim had his first solo show A Date with Xian, also at KIA Theater. On Nov. 25, new Kapamilya artist Jona marked her entry into the Kapamilya network with Queen of the Night: Jona with Regine VelasquezAlcasid and Jed Madela, again at KIA Theater. Italian Filipino hunk Matteo Guidicelli held his first-ever concert in his hometown Cebu, #MatteoMadeinCebu to mark his 10th year in the business. Hashtags member Ronnie Alonte ended the year with a bang, not only because of his Metro Manila Film Festival entry Vince and Kath and James, but also because of his first solo concert titled Kilig King, again, at KIA Theater on Dec. 17. Apart from the solo concerts, firsttime group performances also shone this year. There’s the Valentine concert Royals at Mall of Asia Arena on Feb. 13 with Martin Nievera, Regine VelasquezAlcasid along with the King and Queen of Teleserye Theme Songs Erik Santos and Angeline Quinto. Star Magic artists didn’t only dominate the traditional concert scene this year, but they have also participated in the pioneering digital concert arena spearheaded by the ABS-CBN online music portal One Music PH.

Pop Rock Princess Yeng Constantino served as the digital concert scene’s opening performer, marking 10 years in the business with Yeng Constantino: Salamat sa 10 Taon and was followed by former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Ylona Garcia with My Name is Ylona Garcia.” Espanto followed with The Other side of Darren, his second show for the year. Finally, there came best friends Loisa Andalio, Maris Racal, Sue Ramirez and Kristel Fulgar for the digital concert titled Double Hearts.

Benilde film wins big in 2nd SineNanay filmfest A SHORT film made by students of Digital Filmmaking program of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde won four major awards at the second annual SineNanay Film Festival held at the Philippine Women’s University Concert Hall on Taft Avenue on Dec. 16. Uyayi won Best Director (Alda Dalisay), Best Cinematography (Francis Jimenez and Ernestine Joice Bay), Best Sound and Best Production Design (Elaiza Rivera, Robin Estargo and Neil Reyes). Dalisay, Bay and Rivera came up with the story of a first-time mother trying to figure out how to become a caring mother despite being placed in a dire situation. Their entry is one of 120 concepts received by festival organizer Make Your Nanay Proud Foundation from 11 universities and colleges in Metro Manila. “While brainstorming, I wondered how mothers inside the prison take care of their child(ren), especially those who lived on the streets, got pregnant early and did not have an idea on how to take care of a baby,” Dalisay recalled. The SineNanay Festival Committee, composed of Festival Director Arnold Reyes, MYNP Managing Director and Festival Secretariat Head Bemz Benedito and MYNP Admin Officer and Festival Coordinator Michelle Fabunan, trimmed down the enries to 27.
