DA halts P20/k rice program until May 12

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has deferred the P20 per kilo rice program until after the May 2025 elections to comply with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) 10-day ban on socio-civic aid.

When asked whether Mr. Marcos believed the suspension was politically motivated, Castro reiterated the President’s position to remain above partisan claims.

"The President's view is always whatever is in accordance with the law; we will not use the excuse of politicking," she said.

Castro declined to weigh in on whether the abuse of power lies with Garcia or Ombudsman Samuel Marties, reiterating that due process must be allowed to take its course.

"We are not saying anything about whether the abuser is the Ombudsman or Governor Gwen Garcia," she said.

The inquiry comes amid widespread criticism over PrimeWater’s service performance, particularly in areas with joint venture agreements between the company and local water districts.

According to Castro, complaints have been pouring in from provinces such as Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Bohol, and Pangasinan.

"There are people literally crying over the water situation in these areas," she said.

"PrimeWater reportedly has 73 joint venture agreements with local water districts, so this will be a deep and comprehensive investigation," Castro added.

As this developed, Malacañang made it clear that it was not keen on making exhaustive analyses on the Duterte camp’s legal maneuvers at The Hague.

“Let them be,” was Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro’s reply when asked for comment on the move of the Duterte camp questioning the ICC’s jurisdiction on former President Rodrigo Duterte.

cia’s public declaration did not come as a surprise.

“This is not the first time Gov. Garcia has defied the rule of law particularly the lawful order and decision of the Office of the Ombudsman,” he said.

Martires said Garcia, then a 3rd district representative of Cebu, was ordered dismissed from service due to a questionable purchase property in 2008, most of which were later found to be submerged.

He said Garcia “defied the Ombudsman's Decision and without any Court Order remained in Office until June 2019 because the decision of the Ombudsman was not implemented by the leadership of the House of Representatives.”

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has yet to decide on the Cebu governor’s plea for injunctive relief as the Ombudsman’s office has yet to request the poll body to greenlight the enforcement of her preventive suspension.

mille Villar motivated the probe on the Villar-owned water distribution firm.

It can be recalled that Villar accepted the Vice President’s endorsement despite her being on the administration’s Alyansa ng Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate.

Castro accused Duterte of “resorting to politics” instead of confronting issues of grave importance to the public.

"We cannot expect anything nice or any nice word from the Vice President in favor of the President and of the present administration,” Castro said, adding that Duterte often defaults to "pamumulitika" (politicizing) without directly answering substantive questions.

Castro stressed that PrimeWater customers have long been complaining about the company’s services.

"This is not a new issue," she said.

"What’s puzzling is why it wasn’t resolved during the previous administration, especially since PrimeWater

"But right now, the number of trolls on social media platforms has increased more than tenfold. In short, we are now monitoring 10,000 social media accounts that counter our position in the WPS," he added.

Tarriela explained that these trolls operate on three levels: as influencers or initiators, disseminators, and reposters.

He said these accounts are spreading narratives claiming that the Philippines lacks legal grounds for its claims and is escalating tensions in the WPS. They also allege that the United States is behind the Philippines’ actions in the region.

Tarriela further noted that government officials advocating for the Philippines' position in the WPS are being targeted by trolls through online attacks.

For her part, Gov. When asked about potential sanctions on PrimeWater should the investigation confirm lapses, Castro said it was premature to discuss penalties.

"It is an attack on our freedom. It is an attack on what we deserve. It is an attack on the ability of every Filipino citizen to enjoy a free press, learn the truth, speak and be heard, and stand up for ourselves and stand united," he said.

The senator raised the alarm during a Senate Special Committee hearing on maritime security, where he presented documents linking Beijing to information operations aimed at undermining pro-sovereignty voices.

Tolentino cited the firm Infinitus Marketing Solutions as allegedly co-

Ricky Davao died last Thursday following complications related to cancer. He was 63.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Ricky Davao. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children and loved ones, after bravely facing complications related to cancer,” his daughter, Ara Davao, wrote in a post in her Instagram account.

Davao, whose real name is Frederick Charles Caballes Dabao, was a prominent figure in Philippine film, television, and theater.

“For more than four decades, he dedicated his life to the craft of acting and directing. His remarkable body of work and award-winning performances have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire,” she said.

Known for his versatility as an actor, he played a wide range of roles— from dramatic leads and father figures to complex antagonists—and later transitioned into directing, earning accolades in various mediums.

Throughout his prolific career, Davao was celebrated for both his talent and professionalism in working with generations of actors and directors in the industry. His work earned him acting awards from Gawad Urian, FAMAS, and the Metro Manila Film Festival.

Beyond the screen and stage, Davao was known as a devoted father, brother, son, and friend.

“We are deeply grateful for your prayers, love, and kind messages during this difficult time,” the statement added.

"This ranking is a welcome development on the eve of World Press Freedom Day and a boost to our efforts to address media-related threats and attacks," Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. said.

"With the cooperation of government agencies like the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), as well as our media partners, we will remain vigilant in defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists," he added.

The PTFOMS official likewise acknowledged ongoing challenges faced by the Philippine media, including the recent killing of veteran journalist Juan "Johnny" Dayang.

Assuring stakeholders of the PNP's active investigation regarding Dayang's case, Torres called on the public to join efforts in protecting press freedom.

Meanwhile, national newspaper association Philippine Press Institute (PPI) issued a statement ahead of World Press Freedom Day and the upcoming elections.

"In the run-up to the May 12 midterm polls, the PPI denounces the continuous attacks on journalists and media workers. At least 15 incidents have been recorded since the campaign period began in February," the statement read.

"Despite our shortcomings, journalism's best defense against these threats is serving the public. Our media-citizen councils give us hope as the very communities we serve recognize the crucial role that media plays in a functioning democracy," it added.

Paradise hotel

FIRST off, congratulations to the applicants who made it into UPCAT 2025!

Surely, setting your foot into the great outdoors through your experiences in the university is an experience worth learning. Here’s to your journey inside the great institution as the new ‘Iskolar ng Bayan.’

A quick mention to those who will be entering the vast and luscious University of the Philippines Los Baños, the campus sitting at the foot of Mount Makiling. Elbi, as what we colloquially call it, is home to its roster of agriculturists, economists, and even people working their path to become artists. It is here where society’s most colorful figures have honed their minds for their chosen paths. Elbi, for all its greatness centered on honor, excellence and service, has become a cross for many to bear. The heavy workload and expectations on academic work aside, having to empty your pocket every single day for anyone living and surviving within its bounds is a struggle. Take this case for example; a student spends P200 on an average for his daily expenses. An average meal would cost around P50-70. On top of that is the amount of money needed for classroom needs, such as an examination bluebook or a handful of documents -- modules, reviewers, and assignments - printed outside. Other items, like a snack to keep the stomach full throughout the day, can be enjoyed if there is spare change left. However, the money trail does not end in the daily expense. One’s travel to and from UPLB is also taken into consideration in computing the cost. A one-way bus ride from Cubao or Buendia would cost at a discounted price of P122; P79 for the slashed rate if you’d be taking it from Alabang. Jeepney rides are also crucial as these are not only being done as they drop off at the designated stop. Do take note that this only applies to those who take their commute on their way to the campus. We now have the daily and weekly expenses; dorm payments can now complete the long list. Student housing usually costs P800 every month, with the electricity bill -- measured through the appliances being used -- adding up to the total. Drinking water, too, is also paid every month by the student. As much as I

could speak of its convenience, these incampus residences have served as its occupants’ dumping ground to throw their own filthy behavior. For dormitories outside, rent starts at P2,000 per person. Electricity, water, and even the internet payables are computed separately. Some of the newer ones, those with more lavish rooms, are more costly. Has it been hard for us, its students, to endure the cost of living inside the campus? I think the answer is already written.

Elbi, for all its greatness centered on honor, excellence and service, has become a cross for many to bear

Which is why I could never accept the reason - and the rationale - of any plan to increase the rent for its student dormitories initiated by the UPLB administration. There have been no proper, transparent accounts of financial statements that would look into their own money trail - of how the PhP800 monthly rate every campus dormer would pay. If they could increase the prices of appliance consumption here in campus dormitories without seeking proper consultation from its students, they could do the same too for the monthly rent. Who, then, is supposed to represent our concerns with this possible move?

The university-wide dormitory alliance?

Have they tried to coordinate with the student council? We turn to them in this time of great need; such pleas, unfortunately, have yet to be heard by them. One may see our helplessness, but we have now been brought to our own apathy.

To the incoming freshmen reading this, may this essay prepare you to face this blunt reality of living in this paradise we all call UPLB. The costs of living here are high, and will continue to go high, until you lose all the money left in your bag.

UK to launch poignant European 80th VE Day celebrations

LONDON – Britain kicks off four days of events Monday marking 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe, lent extra poignancy by the fading of the “Greatest Generation” and renewed global turbulence.

Victory in Europe Day celebrations across the continent will be centered on May 8, the day Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945.

The British royal family will help launch joyous festivities on Monday watching a military parade, followed by a tea party for veterans at Buckingham Palace.

King Charles III, wife Queen Camilla, heir to the throne Prince William and his wife Catherine will attend the parade, and will also watch a flypast of old and modern aircraft from the palace balcony, with thousands of people due to line the streets.

Charles and Catherine both revealed last year that they had been diagnosed with cancer but have since returned to frontline duties, albeit with reduced schedules.

The anniversary, set to be among the last major wartime commemorations with a significant presence of veterans, will also see union flags draped on London’s Cenotaph war memorial that honors Britain’s war dead.

“For me, it’s important to remember some of the poor devils who didn’t make it,” WWII Royal Air Force veteran Dennis Bishop, 99, told AFP, urging younger generations to “grow up to be friendly with everybody.”

Street parties across the country will include one on board HMS Belfast, the most significant surviving WWII warship, now anchored in central London. Over the following three days other events will include an installation of nearly 30,000 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, an historic citadel on

the River Thames.

The celebrations will culminate on May 8 with a two-minute national silence and remembrance service at Westminster Abbey. A nostalgic concert at the historic Horse Guards Parade in the evening will feature pop singers, actors and military bands.

It was only after the May 8 surrender that the full horrors of Nazi rule came to light, including that six million Jews had been systematically murdered in the Holocaust.

While VE Day has traditionally been a celebration, this year’s will be tinged by current global events and the passing of a generation.

It was only after the May 8 surrender that the full horrors of Nazi rule came to light, including that six million Jews had been systematically murdered in the Holocaust

“All historical anniversaries take their colour both from the event in question and also from the context,” author and historian David Reynolds, from the University of Cambridge, told AFP.

The three-year conflict in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion will also affect events.

Challenges to press freedom in the digital age

TODAY, journalists in all habitable continents celebrate the basic principles of press freedom, easily understood as the right of journalists and news organizations to publish information, opinions, and ideas without government interference or censorship.

It essentially means the ability to report news and express opinions freely without fear of being controlled or punished by the government.

World Press Freedom Day began to be celebrated every year on May 3 after being proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, an action which chased a recommendation from the UNESCO General Conference.

The date marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a call for media pluralism and independence by African journalists in 1991.

The Windhoek Declaration, a statement of press freedom principles adopted in 1991 by African journalists during a UNESCO seminar in Windhoek, Namibia, championed the importance of a free, independent, and pluralistic media and is considered a benchmark for press freedom globally.

World press freedom gets under sharper focus in this stretch of the digital age because of the emerging

“The defeated enemy (Germany) is now an ally... and an ally that is, for the first time in the history of NATO, really going to play a major part in NATO’s defence activity. That adds a sense of irony,” he added.

Exceptionally, May 8 will be a public holiday in Germany with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to attend a service at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which was partly destroyed by Allied air raids during the war.

The German parliament will then hold a ceremony in the presence of high-ranking guests but without the Russian and

In the digital age, press freedom faces new challenges and opportunities.

While the internet and social media offer avenues for wider dissemination of information and increased citizen engagement, they also present risks like the spread of misinformation, censorship, and the erosion of trust in traditional media outlets.

Experienced news executives say the rapid advancement of AI has further complicated the landscape, raising concerns about bias, accuracy, and the potential for manipulation.

For its part, the Philippine government rests on the Constitutional assurance that no law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression or of the press which it says is essential to country’s history and a significant ingredient of Philippine nationhood.

Trump axes NSA Waltz after chat group scandal

WASHINGTON, DC – US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Friday Manila time) replaced his national security advisor Mike Waltz following a scandal over a chat group leak, saying he would appoint him as ambassador to the United Nations instead.

In other developments, demonstrators across the United States gathered Thursday for May Day rallies against Donald Trump, protesting his administration’s policies and attempts to push the limits of presidential power.

The protests were organized by a loose network of left-leaning activist groups, which said the rallies were taking place in more than 1,000 locations. Hundreds to thousands of protesters gathered in many of the nation’s largest cities from New York to Chicago and Los Angeles, while a number of smaller towns also had demonstrators turn out in their streets.

In the first major Cabinet shake-up of Trump’s new term, the president said Secretary of State Marco Rubio would now also serve as his interim national security advisor following Waltz’s departure.

“From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first,” Trump said on Truth Social as he announced the move. But the 51-year-old former special forces officer and Florida congress-

SoKor ex-PM launches bid for presidency

SEOUL—South Korea’s former prime minister Han Duck-soo announced his bid for the presidency on Friday, joining the race in a snap election triggered by the impeachment of the ex-president.

The June 3 vote will decide who replaces impeached former president Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office bv his ill-fated declaration of martial law in December that sank South Korea into prolonged political turmoil.

Political instability in the country intensified Thursday after a retrial was ordered for a presidential frontrunner over alleged election law violations, and as two key government figures -- including Han -- resigned. Han had hinted at a possible presidential bid when he resigned as acting president and prime minister on Thursday, suggesting that he was willing to “take on a greater responsibility”.

“For the future of the Republic of Korea, a country I deeply love, and for all of us, I have decided to do what I can,” Han said in a televised speech on Friday.

man had been living on borrowed time since the so-called “Signalgate” scandal broke in March.

The editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine revealed at the time that Waltz had mistakenly added him to a group chat about US strikes on Yemen’s Huthi rebels on the commercial messaging app Signal.

“I’m deeply honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation,” Waltz said in a post on X. Trump had repeatedly offered his backing in public, but behind the scenes Waltz was losing his confidence over Signalgate, while there were also tensions with other officials due to his hawkish stance on Russia and Iran.

His position was increasingly at odds with Trump’s pivot towards Moscow as Washington pushed for Ukraine to reach a quick ceasefire deal, and as Trump reopened negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

US Vice President JD Vance nonetheless told Fox News that Waltz’s removal and shift to the UN could be seen as a “promotion,” and had nothing to do with Signalgate. AFP

Media rights group warns vs. slump in press freedom

PARIS—Media rights group RSF warned Friday about “an alarming deterioration in press freedom” in the United States under President Donald Trump as well as “unprecedented” difficulties for independent journalists around the world.

Paris-based Reporters Without Borders, which has been tracking press freedom for the last 23 years, said its main index had fallen to its lowest-ever level.

“For the first time in the history of the index, the conditions for practicing journalism are poor in half of the world’s countries and satisfactory in fewer than one in four,” an annual review of media freedom globally by the charity concluded.

Large parts of the United States were now “news deserts,” RSF said.

Trump announced Wednesday that he was considering legal action against The New York Times, in his

latest attack on a media outlet. He is also suing media group Paramount over a pre-election interview last year of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris on its CBS channel.

Trump alleges it was edited to remove an embarrassing response, although many legal analysts view the case as baseless and likely to be dismissed or fail due to constitutional protections for freedom of the press.

RSF editorial director Anne Bocande highlighted the role of economic pressures in undermining fact-based reporting, with many independent outlets having to close because of funding difficulties.

Although spending on online advertising was still rising—hitting $247.3 billion in 2024, according to RSF —a growing share is captured by online giants Facebook, Google or Amazon rather than media companies. AFP

RUNCURN, United Kingdom - Hardright upstarts Reform UK snatched a parliamentary seat from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor party on Friday in local elections that dealt a blow to Britain’s two establishment parties. Reform, led by anti-immigrant firebrand Nigel Farage, won the by-election in Runcorn and Helsby in northwest England by just six votes, as it picked up gains in other localities.

The group’s strong showing continues momentum it built up at last year’s general election and appears to confirm a trend that the UK is enter-

ing an era of multi-party politics.

“For the movement, for the party it’s a very, very big moment indeed,” Brexit champion Farage said of Reform’s first-ever by-election win and Starmer’s first electoral loss since he took office last July.

Reform also picked up dozens of council seats from both Labor and the Conservatives as Britain’s political landscape shows signs of splintering.

The polls were the first since Starmer became prime minister and Kemi Badenoch took over the reins of the struggling opposition Conservatives last year.

Matteo Zuppi is a discreet 69-yearold diplomat with a progressive stance who was entrusted by Pope Francis to lead sensitive peace missions in Ukraine and Russia.

“Don Matteo” as he is affectionately called, is regularly mentioned as a successor to Francis.

The Archbishop of Bologna with a ready smile has presided since 2022 over the Italian Bishops’ Conference and has the support of a large number of the country’s cardinals.

Like the former Argentine pope, Zuppi would vigorously defend the poor and underprivileged, although his words and style are more measured than those of Francis.

SECTARIAN VIOLENCE.

The United States called on the interim authorities to hold perpetrators accountable. Friday, Israel’s military launched air strikes near Syria’s presidential palace in Damascus after accusing the Syrian authorities of failing to protect the Druze minority from sectarian violence. AFP

Just 1,641 seats across 23 local authorities were up for grabs -- only a fraction of England’s 17,000 councilors -- but early results suggested Reform was transferring leads in national polls into tangible results at the ballot box.

“The big question we wanted to know after these results was are the polls right in suggesting that Reform now pose a significant challenge to both the Conservatives and the Labor party? The answer to that question so far is quite clearly yes,” political scientist John Curtice told the BBC. AFP

Concreat opens $356-m cement plant in Antipolo

CONCREAT Holdings Philippines

(CHP), formerly Cemex Holdings Philippines Inc., announced Friday the completion of a $356-million new cement production line at its Solid Cement Plant in Antipolo City, adding 1.5 million metric tons in capacity.

The new line, which became fully operational in April 2025, will boost CHP’s annual production output by 26 percent to 7.2 million metric tons from 5.7 million MT. CHP said the new line successfully passed standard confirmatory testing, ensuring full compliance with operational and product quality benchmarks.

“This expansion is a pivotal step in Concreat’s turnaround. With higher capacity, a more efficient kiln, and the use of Semirara coal, we are rebuilding momentum and lowering production costs— laying the groundwork for long-term recovery,” said CHP president and chief executive Herbert Consunji. He said the capacity expansion also supports the company’s goal of helping build the country’s infrastructure by providing highquality cement products.

The expansion is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities. It will offer skills training, employee development and livelihood programs for nearby communities.

The Board of Investments earlier granted the project fiscal incentives and income tax holiday.

The new line is also equipped with modern, energy-efficient technology to help reduce pollutant emissions and deliver significant annual energy savings. Construction of the expansion project started in 2019 when the company was still owned by Cemex Asian South East Corp. (CASEC). The project was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and problem with the Chinese contractor. Jenniffer B. Austria

Security Bank acquires 25% stake in Home Credit

SECURITY Bank Corp. said Friday it completed the acquisition of a 25-percent stake in HC Consumer Finance Philippines Inc. (HCPH), also known as Home Credit Philippines, for P10.365 billion.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Security Bank’s consumer finance capabilities and expand its market reach in the fast-growing sector.

Security Bank bought the stake from MUFG Bank Ltd. Krungsri, a subsidiary of MUFG, will keep its 75-percent stake in HCPH and remain the majority owner.

SEMIRARA Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC) reported a net income of P4.4 billion in the first quarter of 2025, a 33-percent decline from P6.5 billion a year ago, amid the continued normalization of coal selling

LOCAL shares closed above 6,400 level on Friday on easing concerns about US and China trade war.

The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index rose 56.87 points or 0.89 percent to close at 6,411.86 while the broader all shares Index went up 13.82 points or 0.37 percent to 3,741.12.

The peso also closed at 55.57 against the US dollar Friday, up from 55.84 on Wednesday.Asian markets also advanced on Friday as China expressed willingness to negotiate with US on tariff issues, which eased concerns about potential trade war.

“Philippine shares broke past the 6,400 level as easing trade tensions and Fitch’s reaffirmation of the country’s BBB rating with stable outlook lifted sentiment,” Regina Capital Development Corp head of sales Luis Limlingan said. Among the sectoral indices, services rose the most, increasing by 2.55 percent followed by holding firms and financials which climbed 1.84 percent and 0.31 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, mining and oil fell sharply, declining by 2.73 percent as gold prices fell due to easing trade tensions. Property also dropped by 0.57 percent and industrial by 0.37 percent. Value turnover reached P6.27 billion. International Container Terminal Services Inc. was the top index gainer as share price rose 5.35 percent to P358.40 each.

Shares of SM Prime Holdings Inc. on the other hand declined 0.62 percent to P24.20 each.

Asian markets largely rose Friday, tracking Wall Street gains, as China said it was considering a US offer to negotiate steep tariffs.

US markets had forged higher Thursday following strong results from tech giants Microsoft and Meta that helped offset lingering economic worries.President Donald Trump’s levies reached 145 percent on many Chinese products in April, while Beijing has responded with fresh 125 percent duties on imports from the United States.

On Friday, China’s commerce ministry said it was evaluating a US offer for negotiations on tariffs, but wanted Washington to show “sincerity” and be ready to scrap levies that have roiled global markets and supply chains. Trump has repeatedly claimed that China has reached out for talks on the tariffs, and this week said he believed there was a “very good chance we’re going to make a deal.” With AFP

Megawide income doubled to P538m on higher revenues

MEGAWIDE Construction Corp. doubled its net income to P538 million in 2024, from P269 million in 2023, driven by strong construction activity, rising demand for precast solutions, higher real estate revenues, and stable earnings from terminal operations.

Revenues also grew by 18 percent in 2024 to P22.1 billion as all business segments posted gains.

“The broad-based growth achieved last year

shows our ability to adapt to changing business landscapes, particularly in the office leasing and real estate markets, to sustain our momentum. We complemented this with operational prudence to ensure that our topline gains will be preserved, as we navigate through global and local uncertainties,” said Megawide chairman and chief executive Edgar Saavedra.

Construction revenues climbed 16 percent to P21 billion, contributing 95 percent of the total. The precast and construction solutions (PCS) segment posted a 28 percent increase in revenues to P5.22 billion. External clients contributed 61 percent compared with 38 percent in 2023.

The company’s order book stood at P43.5 billion at the end of 2024, after securing P17.2 billion in new contracts.

These include its first project under the 4PH housing program in Imus, Cavite, and Phase 1 of the

Cavite Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting key cities and towns to Metro Manila via PITx. Meanwhile, PH1 World Developers, Inc., the real estate arm, generated P711 million in revenues, more than four times the previous year’s figure. The growth came from sales conversion of projects like My Enso Lofts, The Hive, Northscapes, Modan Lofts, and One Lancaster Park.

PH1 recorded a reservation sales of P11 billion as of end-2024.

Landport operations at PITx contributed P355 million, supported by 98 percent leased-out commercial space. Office occupancy ended at 60 percent following the implementation of the POGO ban in December 2024. Megawide raised P5.3 billion from issuance of Series 6 preferred shares last month, which all be used to fund growth and refinance debt.

Abacore’s 2024 earnings increased to P2.6b on asset gains

ABACORE Capital Holdings Inc., a holding company with interests in the leasing of gaming equipment, gold and coal mining, real estate and financial services, reported a yearover-year increase in its net income to P2.6 billion, or P0.60 per share, in 2024 from P2.4 billion, or P0.56 per share, in 2023.

The value of the company’s assets also increased, with book value per share increasing to P5.01 in 2024 from P4.39 in 2023.

Abacore’s BVPS continues to be significantly higher than the company’s stock price, which is currently below P1.00.

The financial results for 2024 were primarily impacted by a year-overyear increase in gains on fair-value adjustments to P3.5 billion from P2.6 billion.

The increase can be attributed to Abacore’s timely moves to capitalize on the appreciation of the value of its assets within its land bank.

The gains for 2024 exclude the sale of a 16-hectare investment property located in San Salvador, Lipa, Loob, Mataas na Kahoy, and Mabini in Batangas.

The property was sold for P346.4 million, net of cost and provision of taxes, and Abacore would have reported a gain of P119.7 million from the sale.

Despite the sale being made in 2024, the buyers of the investment property are still completing certain acts that prevented the gain from be-

DigiPlus, BingoPlus Foundation expand medical mission

DIGIPLUS Interactive Corporation and its corporate social responsibility arm, BingoPlus Foundation, expanded their healthcare initiatives through its KalusuganPLUS Program in the southern provinces in the country for the first quarter of 2025.

This is due to the companies’ continued commitment to providing accessible healthcare to underserved communities.

Urduja and Barangay Antipluan, Narra, Palawan, last March 6 and March 7.

Volunteer doctors, together with municipal health workers, provided free medical services to a total of 1,300 residents across 12 barangays, primarily aimed at boosting immunization against various illnesses and viral diseases including dengue.

ing reported in 2024. As such, this gain will be recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

Despite multiple sales of assets within its land bank, there are still 350 hectares worth of land within Abacore’s balance sheet. This is due to the company continuously replenishing its land bank by making strategic acquisitions, and this was a factor in Abacore’s total assets increasing to P26.6 billion in 2024 from P23.3 billion in 2023.

The Foundation gave direct response to the alarming dengue surge in Palawan, where Department of Health- MIMAROPA recorded 7,060 dengue cases, with Narra, Palawan contributing 1,111 cases and 7 fatalities, the highest in the province. KalusuganPLUS Program launched a two-day medical mission in Barangay Princess

Furthermore, residents received education on dengue prevention, specially focusing on necessary precautions and sanitation practices that can easily be implemented within their households.

“Our partnership with DigiPlus and BingoPlus Foundation has been invaluable in addressing our community’s healthcare needs. This initiative provided much-needed services while reinforcing efforts in disease prevention and public health education. We are truly grateful for this collaboration, which has significantly improved the well-being of our residents,” said Dr. Gina Tagyab, Municipal Health Officer of Narra.

LISTED Repower Energy Development Corp. (REDC), a subsidiary of Pure Energy Holdings Corp., said its net income fell 30.7 percent to P119.2 million in 2024 from P172.18 million in 2023. REDC said in a statement its financial results last year were impacted by higher non-cash costs due to the start of commercial operations of REDC’s two new hydropower plants: the 5.808 megawatt Tibag hydropower plant and the 1.4 MW Lower Labayat hydropower plant.

REDC said its financial fundamentals for the year remain robust despite higher costs for 2024, Revenues from electricity generation increased by 16.8 percent to P533.4 million from P456.6 million in 2023.

“Despite conditions related to the operating environment being a factor in our higher expenses, REDC still finished 2024 on a high note given the continued strong performance of the run-of-the-river hydropower plants in the key markets we operate in,” Eric Peter Roxas, REDC president and chief executive said.

“We have also increased our capital expenditures for the ongoing construction of the 15 MW Pulanai hydropower plant in Bukidnon, which we expect will double the present generation capacity.”

The company is looking to commission its 15 MW Pulanai hydropower plant by the third quarter this year — ahead of its original Moreover, REDC said an uprated capacity is in the process that will see the capacity increase by up to 20 percent for the hydro plant.

DTI cracks down on substandard steel products

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has stepped up its enforcement drive against substandard steel products following a market testbuy report submitted by an industry group, which flagged non-compliant rebar and angle bar items being sold in local markets.

The move is in line with the directive of Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque to ensure that steel products offered for sale meet the requirements of the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for quality and safety.

“Our enforcement efforts will focus on retail inspections, plant audits, and close coordination with industry associations to promote full compliance with quality standards,” said Trade assistant secretary and supervising head of the fair trade group Agaton Uvero.

As part of its intensified campaign, the DTI is conducting targeted enforcement at retail outlets—which may lead to case filings and confiscation of substandard products— alongside plant visits and audits of

manufacturers holding PS Licenses that have been identified as potential sources of non-compliant goods.

The department is also working closely with industry associations to strengthen awareness and promote strict adherence to Philippine National Standards (PNS) among producers and sellers.

The DTI’s renewed push comes on the heels of alarming findings by the Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) and the Steel and Stainless Steel Marketing Association of the Philippines Inc. (SASSMAPI).

Both groups conducted separate test-buy operations earlier this year, revealing a disturbing pattern of noncompliance among steel products sold nationwide.

GFNI unit exports low-grade nickel ore to Indonesia

NICKEL miner Global Ferronickel Holdings, Inc. (GFNI), through its operating unit Platinum Group Metals Corp. (PGMC), expanded its export market with its first nickel ore shipment to Indonesia.

PGMC shipped 56,625 wet metric tons (WMT) of low-grade nickel ore with 1.25 percent nickel and iron content below 20 percent on April 30, 2025, bound for Indonesia, GFNI said in a disclosure to the stock exchange Friday.

“This first shipment to Indonesia

represents a key strategic move for FNI as we continue to strengthen our international market presence and diversify our client base. China remains our biggest market but the demand from Indonesia has been growing significantly since the past year,” said GFNI president Dante Bravo.

PGMC targets 91 shipments this year, totaling five million WMT, weather permitting. It also expects a sales mix of 47 percent medium-grade and 53 percent low-grade nickel ore.

DPWH on track to complete Bucana bridge project in Davao by November

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Friday it is on track to complete the P3.12 billion Davao River (Bucana) Bridge Project by November 2025.

Slated for completion ahead of its original late-2025 deadline, this 1.34-kilometer, four-lane, six-span bridge is poised to transform mobility and connectivity in Davao City.

The agency said the project is now 85 percent complete.

DOTr tells LTO to issue show cause order vs. vlogger

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to issue a show cause order against motorcycle vlogger Yanna over a recent road rage incident in Zambales.

Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said that all road users must display discipline, accountability, and responsible behavior, especially the public figures and influencers.

The issuance of a show cause order strengthens the agency’s warning that any action endangering others or inciting road confrontation will not be tolerated.

“We will continue to work closely with our attached agencies to promote a culture of safety and courtesy among all road users,” Dizon said.

The LTFRB also issued a show cause order to Pangasinan Solid North Transit Inc. on April 23 in connection with two separate complaints: one from a pet owner whose cat was allegedly mistreated during transit, and another from a parent whose child with disability was mocked by a bus conductor. Darwin G. Amojelar

Sadain, who oversees infrastructure flagship projects funded through Official Development Assistance (ODA), said the final bridge deck connection is targeted for completion by June 2025.

This schedule allows sufficient time for final works, ensuring the bridge will be ready for vehicular traffic by November 2025.

The Bucana Bridge Project is funded through an ODA grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

It forms a crucial link along the

Davao City Coastal Road, which will serve as an alternative corridor to help decongest the city’s heavily trafficked urban routes.

Structurally, the Bucana Bridge features a 480.20-meter extradosed design, with each pier supported by 10 stay cables — a modern engineering solution chosen for its strength, durability, and striking appearance, further enhancing Davao’s skyline.

The Bucana Bridge is identified as a priority under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s “Build Better More”

program. Infrastructure projects like Bucana Bridge are key to achieving the vision of high-quality, resilient, and accessible public infrastructure that improves the lives of Filipinos nationwide.

Beyond easing traffic, the new bridge will unlock broader economic opportunities, connecting Davao’s east and west coastal areas, enhancing access to essential services, supporting agricultural and commercial activities, and promoting tourism across Mindanao.

pines’ largest nickel ore exporters in recent years, with mining assets in Cagdianao, Surigao del Norte, and Brooke’s Point, Palawan. Most of its shipments went to China, the world’s top consumer of nickel for use in stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries.

GFNI expects a double-digit growth rate in revenues in 2025 on the back of higher production capacity in Palawan (from 1.5 million WMT to 3 million WMT), combined with increased productivity in Surigao and improved contributions from port operations in Bataan.

San Miguel unit plans to develop hydro project in Pangasinan

SAN Roque Hydropower Inc. (SHRI), a unit of San Miguel Global Power Holdings Inc., is pursuing the development of the 400 megawatt San Roque Optimization pumped storage hydro project in Pangasinan. SRHI, in documents submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said the project involves the construction of a dam located downstream of the NIA Reregulating pond.

It said the dam will retain the Agno river flow and divert water into a lower storage pond.

It will also involve the construction of a dike, a pump house and access roads.

Construction will involve 100 to 200 workers and engineers.

“The project features of the 400 MW facility highlight its potential for substantial energy production and integration into the existing grid,” SRHI said.

The company said the project aims to address the need for additional renewable energy capacity and support the Philippines energy sufficiency plan by 2030.

It said PSH projects can cater to peak demand, providing cost-effective energy during periods of high consumption.

57% of journalists fearing AI may replace more jobs in coming years

MORE than half of journalists fear their jobs are next. Are we watching the slow death of human-led reporting?

In a profession built on truth-telling, the truth journalists are now confronting is a deeply unsettling one: the machines are not just coming—they’re already here.

In the Journalism and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Survey carried out by Pressat , working journalists have revealed that 57.2% are concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace more journalism jobs in the coming years. While technology has long played a role in shaping how news is gathered and reported, this new wave—marked by automated content creation, AIbased social media monitoring, and algorithmic editorial decisions—is sparking alarm across the industry.

Over 70% of journalists said they are actively worried about AI displacing them within the next few years

Trust is at the heart of this growing unease. A staggering over 80% of journalists expressed concern that AI-generated news could be biased or discriminatory, with one admitting, “I have witnessed this already.”

“AI isn’t a tool, it’s a threat,” one journalist noted. “It doesn’t understand context, humanity, or ethics—but it’s cheaper.” another respondent wrote.

The threat is not just professional—it’s existential.

More than 60% believe AI could lead to a loss of human identity and autonomy in news reporting, with some warning that AI-generated content risks stripping journalism of its soul, turning a once deeply human profession into a sanitized stream of data outputs.

Some 30.4% of respondents reported that they see AI as a potential risk to investigative journalism.

The irony? While some see AI as a destroyer, others see opportunity. About 50% believe AI could create new roles in journalism, especially in managing or overseeing AI tools—yet a large number remain unconvinced that newsrooms are ready. Ratings for preparedness were tepid, with scores clustering in the 2–4 out of 5 range, indicating that most journalists believe news organizations are only moderately equipped to integrate AI responsibly.

A total of 57.6% of journalists stated that they have witnessed AI being used to track growing news stories by monitoring social media platforms. And while many acknowledge AI’s power to speed up story tracking, especially via social media surveillance, others voiced chilling concerns about AI being used silently in the background by employers—undermining both editorial independence and job security.

“Only a small minority of journalists felt their organisations had any real plan for ethical AI

adoption.” “One respondent put it bluntly: “We’re being thrown into this blindly, and it’s going to cost us our credibility.””

This survey sends a stark message: the profession that once held power to challenge Big Tech now finds itself at its mercy. AI’s rise is no longer a future threat—it’s a present reality. And for many in journalism, the question isn’t whether AI will change their work—it’s whether there will still be human journalists left to do it.

Setting yourself up for success: 5 things to consider when choosing right school

STUDENTS spend most of their day at school to learn, form bonds, and gain life experiences. This is why choosing the right school is probably the most important decision to make before embarking on your academic journey— and it’s never simple! It is called a “second home” for a reason.

With the sea of options out there, it is easy to get overwhelmed, especially if you do not know where to start. So, if you’re entering high school or starting college, here are five things to help you evaluate your options and find your perfect match.

1. Explore the programs and extracurricular activities

If you haven’t decided on a program yet, search for schools that offer a variety of courses to select from. Be it the arts, sciences, business, or sports, having diverse choices provides you an education that better aligns with your goals and interests. Aside from academics, extra-curricular activities are another great way to develop your skill set. Not only do these indicate the school’s commitment to holistic growth, but this also gives you a clear picture on the culture of their community (and whether you’ll fit right in).

among others. This will tell you so much of what

3. Check the school culture and

A school’s impact can also be seen in their philosophy. It is embodied through their mission and vision and are not just in the handbook for you to read. This shapes your social interactions and moral foundations, so it’s always a good thing to be in a community with shared beliefs. Get immersed in their culture or try meeting someone who can give you a good sense of what the school is all about. Whether or not it clashes with yours is for you to decide. What are your non-negotiables? You just need to find what best serves your purpose.

LOVE eternal , a new short film, looks at how technology affects love and grief. Directed by Dominic Czarnota, the film tells the story of a widower who becomes obsessed with a virtual reality program that recreates his deceased wife as a digital avatar.

Czarnota, who has a background in software engineering, wanted to bring his tech knowledge into the film. “I wanted to explore what technology can do through a sci-fi lens,” he said. The film asks whether it’s right to use technology to bring back loved ones and what this means for our humanity.

Filipino actor Anthony Sayo plays Paul, the husband who keeps his wife “alive” through the virtual reality program. The technology becomes so advanced that the digital avatar develops its own feelings, causing problems in their relationship. Paul learns that love and emotions are complicated, and he can’t control the program or his feelings.

Sayo, who has gone through his heartbreak, said the role came naturally. “Losing someone you love is one of the hardest things in life, and how we deal with it is a personal journey,” he said. He hopes viewers will connect with the film’s themes of love and loss.

Sayo also praised Czarnota for his clear direction and leadership on set. “Dominic knows how to guide the cast and crew, and it was great working with him,” he said.

Love eternal will be shown at the 15th Fort Myers Film Festival in Southwest Florida from May 14 to 18. It will screen on May 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sidney & Bernes Davis Art Center. For more details, visit www. fortmyersfilmfestival.com.

DURING the Thunderbolts (2025, directed by Jake Schreier ) media blitz, the lead actor, Florence Pugh (who plays Yelena, Black Widow’s younger sister who is also a trained assassin), mentioned that this latest superhero salvo from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is similar to an A24 movie.

Pugh speaks from experience; she shot into the pop culture stratosphere starring in A24’s Midsommar (2019, directed by Ari Aster). A24 is a movie outfit known for its brave approach to artistic filmmaking and quirky, strange movies. A24 movies usually delve into human nature with a confrontational approach, and Thunderbolts does this.

This is not a superhero movie with origin stories about how the heroes became charged with power. It is not your usual superhero movie about good versus evil, greed versus empathy, or outsiders versus the mainstream. This is a movie about a band of antiheroes—and that’s where the tropes stop. This is not to say that Thunderbolts is not predictable. It is. This movie is a breath of fresh air from the MCU, from its recent idiotic excesses (Deadpool vs Wolverine) and whimper (Capt. America: Brave New World). This is a superhero movie navigating between trauma and marketing.

Yes, marketing. Perception is key to dominance in the public sector. The superhero cast delivers, but one has to be grateful that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is cast as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, a powerbroker character in Marvel Comics.

It is pleasant to see a seasoned actor known for comedic chops eat the role up like a more demented version of her character in Veep. Her character is subject to government oversight for some dubious moves regarding supercharged beings. If there’s one superpower accorded to de Fontaine, it is steely initiative and survival. She has a fantastic line: “Righteousness without power is just an opinion.”

That is quite the line extolling the virtues of dominance. It smacks of the dictum of American exceptionalism: “good guys with guns.” But are these the good guys? This is excellent marketing to position oneself as both proactive and protective. But what if the protectors are flawed? This is the foundation of Thunderbolts. These are not heroes but losers capable of heroics. They are powerful and formidable individually. But they are also emotionally handicapped. It is their personal disasters and inadequacies that are their barriers.

Such a paralyzing state—to be stuck inside your head, which is a hallmark of debilitating depression— is how trauma becomes a villain. Hashing out these traumas, talking them out, and dealing with them with friends or at least with people who understand them is a booster that should be relevant to many of us. All they needed was to work together and a group hug. This is a welcome superpower—vulnerability and confronting embedded hurt together. The Avengers could never.
