60 Second Meditation

Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in... and slowly exhale. Feel your body settling, becoming still and peaceful. With each breath, imagine a warm, golden light beginning to glow in the center of your chest.

Now pause for a moment...

This light represents your inherent worth. It’s always been there, waiting to be acknowledged. Breathe into this light, letting it grow softer and brighter with each gentle breath.

Whisper silently to yourself: “I am worthy. I am enough. I love myself exactly as I am.”

Feel any tension melting away. Release judgment. Release criticism. You are perfectly imperfect, and that is beautiful.

Take a deeper breath...

Imagine this golden light expanding, filling your entire body. It flows through your veins, illuminating every cell with compassion and acceptance. You are deserving of love - especially from yourself. As you breathe, know that you are whole. Complete. Worthy of kindness, respect, and unconditional love.

Breathe in peace. Exhale self-love.

Slowly open your eyes, carrying this gentle warmth with you!

Your Personal Renewal Ritual

YOU Lunar New

Get ready for a cultural celebration that’s far more than just another holiday! The Lunar New Year is a vibrant, centuries-old tradition lighting up the lives of over 1.5 billion people across Asia and beyond.

Picture a celebration that’s part family reunion, part spiritual reset, and completely magical. Originating in China’s Shang Dynasty, this lunarbased festival is like a cosmic refresh button for life. It’s about sweeping away the old and welcoming incredible potential.

Red dominates the scene—crimson decorations, lanterns, and outfits everywhere. It’s the color of joy, prosperity, and good luck. Families clean their homes like professional organizers, symbolically clearing negative energy and making space for awesome opportunities.

The food tells stories. Dumplings shaped like ancient gold ingots represent wealth. Fish symbolizes abundance. Sticky rice cakes speak of family unity. Every bite is meaningful.

Embrace the Lunar New Year’s transformative energy with this practical ritual:

Set Your Intention

10 minutes of quiet time

Write 3 specific yearly goals

Focus on what you want to invite in

Space Cleansing

Choose one space

Remove everything

Clean thoroughly

Return only joy-sparking items

Energy Activation

Add a living element

Place a red object for luck

Take three deep breaths

It’s a mindset—a chance to reset, celebrate connection, and dream big. The Lunar New Year invites everyone to pause, reflect, and get excited about new beginnings.

Wear red, eat dumplings, clear out what’s holding you back. The universe is giving you a cosmic permission slip to start fresh.

Gong xi fa cai! (Wishing you prosperity in Mandarin.)

THE PETS AT THE WATER FRONT

THE PETS AT THE WATER FRONT

Our residents’ beloved pets are more than just animals—they’re cherished family members who bring unconditional love and joy to our senior living community. These faithful companions provide comfort, purpose, and endless moments of happiness for their devoted owners.

Tucker

with Rebecca & Darrell Tucker

Everyone knows Tucker! On his daily walks, he is greeted all over the community, in the elevator, through the lobby, and everywhere he goes. He adjusted very well when Rebecca and Darrell Tucker moved into their place at The Springs. He loves the floor-to-ceiling windows where he can look out and see the river. This is the 4th mini-schnauzer that the Tuckers have owned. Although they loved their other dogs, Tucker is by far the smartest mini-schnauzer that they have owned. He is very friendly with people and other dogs, but he does a good guard-dog fake-out when you try to enter the Tucker’s apartment! However, it only takes him a minute for him to realize that you are not the enemy and he calms right down, tail wagging. The Tuckers have had Tucker since he was a puppy. He is now three years old. Built into his schedule is a monthly appointment with a personal groomer so that he can maintain that very handsome look. He is definitely a people dog, an extrovert, if you will. He loves to sit, shake, and get treats. Be sure to say “Hi” to Tucker when you see him around The Springs, he will be counting on it!

Sammy with Jeanne & John Lloyd

Sammy is a beautiful champagne-colored Labradoodle who lives with Jeanne & John Lloyd. Sammy is still adjusting to his move to The Springs. He misses his yard and running space. When the Lloyds were in the process of moving, Sammy could sense something was up, so he climbed in the backseat of their car and would not get out. Nothing they did could get him out of the car- he was not going to be left behind! Sammy is loyal to both the Lloyds, but especially John, who takes him for his daily walks. When John recently had some health issues, Sammy did not leave his side for 3 days while John recovered. Sammy also loves his toys, especially his plastic pineapple. All toys are in a basket in the den and by the end of the day, Sammy has strategically placed them all over the house, requiring a search to gather and return them to the toy basket. When the Lloyds first got Sammy as a puppy, they thought he would be a small 20 lb. labradoodle, as they had requested. While still a puppy, John was looking at Sammy’s paws one day and mentioned to Jeanne, that these were not the paws of a small dog. It’s true, he is a 60-lb smart, loyal, energetic boy who loves his humans!

Abby with Karin Ford

Abby is a very sweet, mellow cat who allows Karin to live with her at The Springs. She is young, just three years old. She is particular in her ways – she detests catnip but loves to play with strings and ribbons. When she is ready for attention, she will quietly poke Karin in the back until she gets the attention she desires. She really likes people and doesn’t run or hide when someone is visiting. Karin has always had cats in her life, and Abby is her 7th. Abby likes to watch dogs in the park. She is a beautiful cat with a mellow demeanor. The perfect house cat for life at The Springs.

Jasper with

Glen Hess & Mark Cattelino

Jasper is an 18-year-old St. Thomas Conure parrot that Glenn and Mark have had since she was a baby. Yes…she is a girl! The couple found out she was a female a year after adopting her, and it was too late to change her name – so she is known as Jasper! This does not seem to bother her, as she is well known around The Springs as “Jasper the Parrot” or “Jasper and Glenn”. Fun fact - Jasper only speaks Spanish. Mark, who is fluent in Spanish, talks to her only in Spanish. She is from Central America after all. It was love at first sight when Glenn first saw Jasper, and they have a very special relationship. Jasper

wakes between 4:00-4:30 am with Glenn and Mark, eats a breakfast of dried fruit at 6:00 am, and then later in the morning, takes her daily walk around The Springs on Glenn’s shoulder. They begin on the 6th floor, with a stop on the 2nd floor so Jasper can say hello to Isabel, then to the 1st floor to see her favorite person, Izzy, at the reception desk. Everyone knows and loves Jasper! When Jasper is tired and ready to go home, she will pull on Glenn’s ear to let him know. In the past, Jasper used to put her head in a large bell in her cage and squawk so that the bell would amplify her voice and get everyone’s attention. Jasper does get attention around The Springs, but for all the right reasons!

Yahoo with Marilyn Simmons

This sweetheart of a pup had a rough start in life. He may have been living on the streets of California for up to 3 years. He then became a rescue dog for Marilyn. Yahoo is approximately 6 years old and weighs just 11 lbs. He has very expressive ears that perked up when I was taking his picture. He has a special bed right by the floor-to-ceiling windows so that he can watch the action below. Marilyn had his DNA checked and found that he is 60% chihuahua, and amazingly 10% German Shepherd with some dachshund thrown in. He was so scared when Marilyn first got him, but with patience, love, and time, Yahoo is now relaxed and friendly! At first, Marilyn couldn’t get him to take walks- he was just not having it. Now, they regularly will walk up to two miles per day. He loves riding in the car and is up for any car adventure. I have heard that Marilyn puts Yahoo in her coat or sweater and carries him around this way, with just his little head peeking out. You know he is loving that!

Luna with Anne John

Luna is a beautiful Persian cat with a great story. When Anne and her husband lived in their home here in Vancouver, they always had lots of big dogs. One day, one of the dogs was barking and making a big fuss over something in the bushes. Anne looked and saw a fluorescent ball of fluff that promptly ran away when she started to reach for it. She kept looking for this fuzzy creature, with no luck. They lived on a cul-de-sac where some people would dump their animals, and she assumed this is what happened to the cat. Finally, after searching for weeks, one of the dogs started barking at the bushes again and Anne was able to get to Luna without her running away. Luna is a Persian cat, with a cute scrunched-up face, which is a Persian trait. Once Luna was installed in their house, she became the Alpha Queen and bossed all the dogs around. She is a sweet cat, but if you cross her, she will take a swipe at you. She loves to look out the floor-to-ceiling windows at all the action outside and on the river. I wonder if Luna ever thinks about her humble beginnings and ponder how very lucky she is that Anne rescued her. Luna is a regal cat that gets lots of love and lives a very nice life here at The Springs.

Hazel with Karen Peck Wilson

Relatively new residents to The Springs, Karen and Hazel are settling in. Hazel is having a little more trouble because she misses her large yard and the freedom to go in and outdoors. However, I am told

that she is very fond of the 9th floor dog park here at The Springs. Hazel is a gorgeous Aussie-doodle (poodle, Australian Shepherd, and labrador). Hazel is seven years-old and Karen has had her since she was a wee little curly pup. Karen’s caregiver, Mark, is very connected to Hazel. She just lights up when he enters the room, and they spend a lot of time together. Hazel loves her morning walks with Mark and will happily ride in the car when he is doing errands. Mark told me he had never met a dog as athletic as Hazel. When they are playing, she is laser-focused on the ball as he throws it to her. He says she catches the ball like an NFL receiver! Usually, Hazel spends the day playing and sleeping, but when visitors are around, she really puts on the charm to make a good impression…it worked on me!

Libby

Libby is a very smart, very friendly, 5 year-old portipoodle (smaller than standard size, larger than a toy). Marty and Marsha have had Libby since she was a small puppy. The Mehr’s were one of the first tenants to find The Springs at the Waterfront, making their decision to move before the building was even finished. The three of them previously lived on the waterfront in Portland, and this move has been an easy adjustment for them all. Marsha told me how smart Libby is - really! After they moved, Marsha was training her to use a puppy-pad in the 2nd bathroom and when she did, she would receive a treat. After a few weeks, Marsha noticed that Libby seemed to be going potty more than usual. Well, after some investigating, Marsha discovered that Libby was “pretending” to use the puppy-pad so she could get her coveted treat. Libby actually had been training Marsha on how this was going to work! Libby loves treats, but the vet recommended that she lose a pound, so now she is keeping her svelte figure by receiving cauliflower and broccoli pieces as her treats. She will let you know if you have only given her two instead of three pieces. I have never met a dog that loves her veggies like this one!

Decadent Duets:

A Chocolate and Wine Love Story

Imagine a sun-drenched terrace overlooking rolling vineyards, a delicate piece of artisan chocolate melting on your tongue, perfectly complemented by a glass of velvety wine. This isn’t just a moment—it’s an experience that transforms ordinary pleasure into extraordinary sensation.

Wine and chocolate aren’t just foods; they’re storytellers. Each has a complex narrative of origin, craftsmanship, and nuanced flavor. When paired correctly, they create a dialogue more intimate than conversation—a sensory language that speaks directly to your palate.

Professional sommeliers have long understood the delicate dance of matching these two luxuries. The secret? It’s all about balance and harmony.

The Flavor Landscape

Different chocolates demand different wine companions:

White Chocolate & Sweet Wines: Moscato d’Asti creates a light, playful encounter

Milk Chocolate & Medium Reds: Pinot Noir whispers sweet nothings to creamy textures

Dark Chocolate & Bold Wines:

Vintage Port or robust Malbec forge passionate connections

Each pairing is a journey. A sip of Malbec with a

square of 70% dark chocolate transports you to the sun-baked vineyards of Argentina. A delicate Riesling with white chocolate evokes the misty mornings of German wine country.

Tasting Like a Connoisseur

The art of pairing isn’t about rules—it’s about exploration. Professional tips include:

Serve wines slightly chilled Let chocolate melt slowly on your tongue

Progress from delicate to intense flavors

Approach with curiosity and joy

This isn’t consumption—it’s celebration. Each bite and sip invites you to slow down, to savor, to connect with centuries of culinary tradition.

Whether you’re a seasoned epicurean or a curious novice, wine and chocolate pairing is your passport to a world of sensory delight. No actual passport required—just an open mind and a willing palate.

Love & Cake

Growing up, February didn’t hold any special significance in our house when it came to holidays or events. My dad wasn’t particularly fond of the commercial idea behind Valentine’s Day, but he still celebrated it in his own way. Every year, he’d show his love for my mom with a massive bouquet of her favorite flowers and a reservation to whichever restaurant she was interested in that year.

But these gestures, while thoughtful, weren’t limited to just Valentine’s Day. My dad’s love was evident year-round in small, everyday ways. He’d get my mom flowers dozens of

times throughout the year, not on any special day, and he never missed an opportunity to tell her how much he loved her.

Even though my dad worked long hours, five days a week, and my mom took on the responsibility of feeding the family every night, there were times when he’d take over and try his hand at cooking.

His real strength was in baking and pastries, and he’d go all out with elaborate creations. One of my mom’s absolute favorites was a dessert called Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte—Black Forest Cherry Torte. It became his go-to dessert for Valentine’s Day, though the funny part was, we never actually

ate it on Valentine’s Day itself. He’d make it on rare occasions throughout the year, and while it was always amazing, he had a tendency to be a little heavy-handed with the kirschwasser—a clear brandy made from Morello cherries. As kids, we didn’t mind at all; we just got used to it, savoring each bite like it might be our last.

The significance of this particular dessert went much deeper than just a delicious treat, though. It was tied to a story from when my parents first met. It happened in New Haven, Connecticut, at my great uncle’s bakery, Gilbert’s. My dad had just made his first Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte and, confident that my mom would love it, he asked her to try a piece. In truth, he was more interested in her opinion—and, of course, her phone number. They started dating shortly after, fell in love, and eventually got engaged.

But the story really took a pivotal turn when my dad joined the army and was sent to Vietnam. The last meal they shared before he left for his first tour was a slice of that very same Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte at Gilbert’s bakery. When he returned after twelve months, the first thing they did was share the same dessert together again, and that moment, that last bite, marked another important chapter in their love story. Then, as he prepared to leave for his second tour, they shared the dessert one more time before he went away. After all these years, that dessert became more than just a cake—it became a symbol of

their enduring love, one that would last through time and distance.

For over 45 years, my parents kept this tradition alive, sharing the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte on Valentine’s Day, just the two of them. It was something special, a quiet celebration of their bond, and we, as kids, never really understood the depth of its significance until later in life, close to my dad’s passing. But the story stuck with me. Now, my wife and I continue the tradition, just as my parents did. Whether we go out to eat or find a place that serves a slice of that same iconic cake, we make sure to keep the tradition alive. It’s our way of honoring the love my parents shared and passing that legacy down to our kids and, hopefully, to our grandkids someday.

February may have been just another month growing up, but now, because of this tradition, it’s become something much more meaningful. It’s a reminder of love, of memories shared, and of a dessert that will forever tie our family’s story together.
