Meet The Unstoppable Peggy Gettles The Pets at The Waterfront

Employee Spotlight: Andruw Johns

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Andruw Johns

A true local, Andruw was born and raised right here in Vancouver, Washington. When he’s not dedicating his time to The Springs, he cherishes moments spent with his family and friends, and he has a serious passion for travel and exploring the world.

When asked about his biggest inspiration, Andruw immediately shared that it is his mother. He describes her as the hardest-working, most caring, and most compassionate person he knows—a wonderful reflection of the dedication he brings to our community every day.

Andruw’s adventurous spirit is also clear in a couple of fun facts: he has visited more countries in Europe than states in the U.S., and one of the biggest items on his bucket list is attending a Premier League soccer match—a truly exciting goal!

Here at The Springs at the Waterfront, we are incredibly fortunate to have Andruw on our team. He consistently stands out as a hardworking, friendly, and wonderfully approachable colleague who brightens the days of residents and staff alike.

For Andruw, the most rewarding part of his career so far is simply knowing that he makes a difference in people’s lives every day. His commitment truly embodies the welcoming and caring spirit of our community, and we are grateful for everything he does!

The Pets at The Waterfront

When I first got to Joanne’s, Stella was hiding completely under the bedspread and I was thinking that she was going to be hard to photograph. I felt like the paparazzi, and she was the famous actress, hiding from her fans! However, she did come out and say hello, and I got a good photo of her. Stella is a beautiful Maine Coon who is 3-1/2 years old. Joanne has always had cats and has had Stella since she was a wee little 8-week-old kitten. Like the celebrity that she is, she can be a fussy girl; she doesn’t really like most cat toys although recently she has chased a toy mouse around the house. Not a big cuddler, when she gets near you, she will reach out and lightly touch you with her paw only. She has, however, befriended one of the care givers. I wonder if the care giver knows how special they are!

Pet: Lily

Humans: Steve & Nancy Dudley

Lily is a 9 year-old Keeshond. Known as a Dutch Barge dog, they were bred to watch over the barges on the canals in Holland. Lily is a beautiful girl; she is very smart and does not wander. She stays with her mom and dad and always has an eye out for them. When Lily first moved to The Springs Vancouver, there was a bit of an adjustment period. It took her several days to accept that she must use something called an “elevator” just to get home after her walks. Lily and her dad were out on a walk a few weeks ago, when Lily spotted two little girls with their dad, one of the girls had fallen and was crying. Lily went over to the crying girl and was such a sweet, fluffy, fur ball of sweetness, the crying stopped and was replaced by squeals of joy. Lily has this effect on people. Her powder puff look comes from the Keeshond’s double coats of fur. Lily’s dad told me that their undercoat can be used as yarn and made into hats and scarves, etc., Amazing!

Pets: Scout & Mocha

Humans: Neil Macquarrie & Patty Eames

Meeting Mocha and Scout was a treat. They are both really good dogs and were very well behaved when we met in the lobby. Mocha has been with her humans since she was a puppy and she is 12 years old now. Before they moved to The Springs, Mocha used to love to deliver Amazon packages to Patty – nothing was too large or too bulky or too heavy, she would haul them up the stairs for personal delivery. Perhaps we can employ Mocha at The Springs, we always have packages to deliver at the front desk. Scout is 7 years old and about a quarter the size of Mocha, Patty thinks that Scout may have been jealous of Mocha and her package delivery skills. However, in the end, Scout and Mocha are amazing friends and enjoy each other. Scout is very special, however, he has had some major medical problems and after spending $5,000 per leg for surgery, he has been rehabilitating for the last 4-5 years! Scout and Mocha have both adjusted well to moving into a high rise and remain friendly and sweet and quiet – not a peep from these pups, neither one is a barker.

Pet: Pepper

Human: Sharon Ziegler

Pepper is a gorgeous 7-year-old Havanese and has been with Sharon since he was a puppy. When Sharon and her late husband were looking at dogs, she found Pepper from a breeder in Florida – except his name was Walt and Sharon’s husband hated the name. Her husband eventually had Walt flown out from Florida for Sharon but not before insisting on a

name change. This is why we have Pepper now! Pepper has adapted very well to the move and adds so much joy to Sharon’s life. He keeps Sharon1qqqqqqq smiling and laughing all the time. He is very sociable, he is full of life, is very smart, has lots of energy and is a good little guard dog. He wants to bark when someone comes to the door but is trained not to. What a good boy! A well traveled dog, Pepper is Sharon’s traveling companion and the two of them recently boarded a plane for Mexico! One of Sharon’s friends has a dog that is Pepper’s BDFF (best dog friend forever) they are adorable together.

Pet: Homer

Human: Merilee Rankin

Homer is an adorable and sweet Boston Terrier who is 6 years old. Merilee has had Homer since he was an 11-week-old puppy. Merilee’s daughter in law makes a Boston Terrier yearly book/calendar and Merilee has some great pieces around her house that are Boston Terrier themed. She says they are everywhere once you start looking for Boston Terriers! They had another Boston Terrier named Tuxley, who was a year older than Homer, but unfortunately, he had epilepsy and passed away 3 years ago. Tuxley’s passing was very hard on Homer, they were like brothers. I really liked Homer, he is friendly, loves company and he gets along great with all the 9th floor dogs. This was the first time I had been around a Boston Terrier and now I hope it won’t be the last!

Pets: Lana & Pepper

Humans: John & Ann Hill

Pepper is a 6-year-old sweet and very pretty little kitty. Pepper is having a hard time adjusting to the move and has been moping around a bit. Their previous house was large, and the cat had many, many cozy hiding places and a large deck to perch and watch birds. Now he is trying to get used to downtown high-rise life and struggling, but John and Ann have been told that Pepper should be fine and will adjust – in a few months.

Lana is a terribly cute 8-year-old terrier/toy poodle mix. This rescue pup has quite a backstory. As a tiny pup, she was found living in a wrecking yard, in California, with a large hernia and several other serious medical issues. Before making her way into John and Ann’s hearts, Lana was being fostered by their daughter in California. Enter Jennifer Anniston (yes, that one), who wants to be “Friends” with Lana and is considering possibly adopting this adorable pup! Sometimes things that seem too good to be true… are too good to be true. Ms. Anniston had Lana for a weekend and then decided that with her four other dogs, it was too much, and she wouldn’t be able to give Lana the attention that she deserved. However, Jennifer offered to pay for all of Lana’s medical bills! After her Hollywood weekend with Jennifer, Lana was ferried by car from California up to Washington and John & Ann. They praise her mellow temperament, says she never barks, is very friendly and doesn’t shed. The Hills specifically chose to live on the 9th floor, so they can be close to Central Bark. Lana understands this and makes it a point of stopping every day on her way home.

Pet: Phoebe

Human: Bobbie Scull

Phoebe gets The Springs Vancouver Wellness and Longevity Choice Award simply for being TWENTY-THREE years old! She is regal and wise and sweet and is a great companion for Bobbie. At 23 (that is human years…not cat or dog years), Bobbie has had Phoebe since she was a wee kitten. The story is that a family member saw Phoebe and her litter mates while in Tennessee. Phoebe’s brothers and sisters were all adopted out but no one wanted scrawny little Phoebe. Bobbie’s relative contacted her and Bobbie said she would take the little kitten, so they put together transportation to get her from Tennessee to Washington state. Phoebe has had to make some adjustments moving from her old house to The Springs, she was used to having her very own room and full run of the house. When I met her, she was curious, friendly and looked like she was adjusting just fine. I am impressed by this feline senior citizen…she doesn’t look a day over 15!

Pet: Zoe

Humans: Jack & Pat Miller

Zoe is a friendly, smart, little chocolate Havanese from Seattle who is 6 years old. The Miller’s have had Zoe since she was just a little pup and the bond between all three is visible. Zoe was quick to adapt to her new high-rise downtown living with the only problem being her excited barking when guests arrive or she sees another dog. Extra training has worked and she is doing well. But Zoe can’t help it if she sees an old friend and a yelp of excited happiness escapes her! She loves her daily walks and visiting the 9th floor Dog Bark. Zoe is a people dog and when I arrived to interview her she was so excited and friendly, I fell for her instantly! The Millers are settling in to their new living experience too, married for 60 years, they lived in their beautiful Portland home for 55 years! We certainly are happy that Zoe brought her mom and dad to live in The Springs Vancouver community!

Pet: Sammy Humans: Marv Rosen & Cheryn Grant

Sammy is an adorable little 7-year-old terrier mix rescue from Oregon. Marv and Cheryn have had Sammy since he was one. The move has been a little hard on Sammy, but he is beginning to adjust. He is very friendly and will let anyone approach him. Sammy is giving back to his community by spending Monday’s working in Memory Care and all the residents LOVE him. He gets along well with small dogs but is a little intimidated by large dogs. Sammy has severe heart disease and is on lots of meds, this is amazing because Sammy and Marv walk an energetic 2-3 times per day!! As walking partners, they keep each other active and healthy.

The last time Sammy’s family was visiting Sun River, Sammy was so worried that his humans might leave without him that he jumped and hid in the trunk – just to make sure. Judging by the relationship Sammy and Marv have, I don’t think Sammy needs to worry about being left anywhere!

Pet: Ziggy Humans: John & Melissa Givens

Before interviewing Ziggy for this article, I had to deal with his handler and P.R. Rep (Jack) to make sure that Ziggy could fit me into his very busy social schedule. After intense negotiations, a time and place was agreed upon for our meeting. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I found both Ziggy and his PR man to be friendly and fun. Ziggy is a 14-year-old Hungarian Sheepdog, who the Given’s have had since he was a wee pup. Bred to watch and protect sheep, these dogs are light-boned and agile and can easily jump onto and over the backs of sheep to keep them all moving together. They guard without being aggressive and Ziggy is always watching for what he believes he needs to guard his humans from. These gorgeous dogs have long corded fur, almost like dreadlocks, if allowed to grow out. Ziggy is close to his humans and they both told me what a smart and gentle dog he is. When he is not busy giving press interviews, Ziggy spends a lot of time at the family tree farm in Washington, where he chases deer and elk, plays with the grouse and lives his best life!

Pet: Elsa & Einstein Human: Bette Laucks

Elsa and Einstein are brother and sister. They are two beautiful cats that are 5 years old and are domestic short hair and Siamese mix. Bette thinks they may even be Snowshoe Siamese, a rare breed. Rescued at 6 months from a dumpster in eastern Oregon they were part of a litter of 8. No place in eastern Oregon could take them so they were all shuttled to The Pixie Project in Portland, where Bette was able to adopt these two sweethearts. Einstein is currently the extrovert in the family and came out to greet me enthusiastically, while Elsa is more demure and shy and waited for me to find her. The kitties love to run out in the hallway and play on the carpet - until they see someone coming and then they quickly scamper back into their apartment. Bette has had animals her whole life and she really loves these two. The love is mutual!

From Farm Roots to World Traveler THE UNSTOPPABLE PEGGY GETTLES

Peggy’s story begins in Manassa, Colorado, a tiny farm town of 800 where long days and hard work shaped her early life. “We were poor farmers,” she says warmly. “But I liked my life. We worked hard.” Chores framed every day, yet Peggy found purpose in the rhythm of the farm.

Her mother saw a bigger path for her and sent Peggy to a Catholic boarding school in Cañon City. Outsiders pitied her. “Everyone said, ‘Oh, poor you,’” Peggy laughs. “But I loved it!” The all-girls school gave her independence and lifelong friends.

Peggy’s intelligence stood out early. She finished high school at 12 and college at 16. “I was always on the brink of trouble,” she says with a grin. “Not bad, just… naughty.” She earned a Bachelor of Science in bacteriology from Colorado State University, trained as a medical technologist, and spent her final year at Washington State University, where she met the man she would be married to for 61 years.

After college she worked in the bacteriology lab at Swedish Hospital in Seattle and joined an open-heart surgery team, performing blood gas tests. “It was exciting,” she says. “To be right there in the operating room, it was fascinating work.”

Peggy and her husband raised two children, Kelly and Jack. She beams when she talks about her four grandchildren and her great grandson. “No rotten apples in the bunch,” she says. One granddaughter, Macy, is a New York artist whose mural brightens Peggy’s den. Peggy calls her “Spacey Macy.” “She’s a little crazy,” she jokes, “but in a good way, just like me.”

Her curiosity carried her far beyond the lab. She traveled through Africa, Greece, and Europe. “Africa was fascinating,” she recalls. “But Greece, I loved the people there. So warm and lighthearted.”

Now living at The Springs at The Waterfront, Peggy is adjusting to a quieter pace. Still, her outlook remains bright. “I’ve been lucky all my life,” she says. “I’ve always ended up in the right place at the right time.”
