60 Second Meditation
Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in… and out.
Imagine opening the windows of your heart. Feel the fresh air of a new season sweep in.
Now, gently scan your inner world. What thoughts, feelings, or grudges have gathered dust? Which ones no longer serve you?
With each exhale, release something you’re ready to let go of. A resentment. A worry. A self-doubt. Let it float away like a leaf on the wind.
With each inhale, breathe in clarity… compassion… and calm.
Visualize light pouring into every corner of your emotional space—tidying, clearing, renewing.
You are not your clutter. You are the calm beneath it.
Take one last deep breath… and slowly open your eyes.
Your heart is lighter. The season is new. And so are you.

BACK TO THE SOURCE Leadership Retreat Rekindles the Mission at Lehman Hot Springs
In April, the leadership team at The Springs at The Waterfront took time away from daily operations to visit a place deeply connected to the heart of our organization—Lehman Hot Springs.
Lehman Hot Springs is a key part of our founding story. This natural, mineral-rich oasis, which has been in the family of our founder, Fee Stubblefield, for generations, has long been a place of rejuvenation, connection, and community—a fitting symbol for what The Springs communities strive to be for our residents and staff.
The retreat wasn’t just a scenic getaway; it was a chance to roll up our sleeves and engage directly with the metaphor that inspires us—keeping the water clean upstream so everything downstream stays vibrant and clear. Team members spent part of their time physically cleaning the spring, reinforcing the vital importance of daily leadership, attention, and care in sustaining a thriving community.
Heather Wilson, Lead Sales Manager, reflected: “Being one of the newest members of the leadership team at SVW, my biggest takeaway came from cleaning
the Springs. The story of the reason for cleaning it and how it tied into the importance of daily leadership, respect, and commitment to maintaining the integrity of our brand promise really spoke to me.”
For Ryan LaTour, the retreat deepened team bonds: “Each team member brings something special to the table. After Lehman, I felt a deeper understanding of how everyone operates and sees the world. It was a great way to reset and build upon our camaraderie.”
Emily Smith, Staffing Coordinator, emphasized a renewed focus on purpose: “The trip gave a clear picture of our mission at The Springs and how we embrace that mission every day in our service to residents and staff.”
At The Springs at The Waterfront, we are committed to nurturing a community where respect, care, and connection flow freely—ensuring that every resident and team member experiences the vibrant, enriching life they deserve.
May
Will Always Be His Month
By Chef Paul Bosch
May had always been a month of duality for me—part celebration, part quiet reflection. The days grew longer, the sun warmer, and the world outside my classroom windows became a constant pull. It was hard to focus on lessons when everything within me yearned for the freedom that came with the arrival of spring. I’d sit there, pencil in hand, staring outside into the clear blue skies, imagining myself in the garden, my hands buried deep in the fertile soil next to the house. The smell of earth, the promise of growth, the anticipation of planting—it was a sensory haven. But more than that, May held a deeper significance, a quiet weight that pulled at my heart in ways I couldn’t yet understand.
I was never one to go on about Mother’s Day, even though my family celebrated it like most others. My father had taught me early on that showing appreciation for my mom—our mom— shouldn’t be limited to just one day. Every day was an opportunity to honor her, to show her the love she so deserved. And though we did the traditional outings, the dinners and the occasional gatherings with friends and family, it was never really a major focus in our house. It was simply understood that our gratitude for her, our respect, and our love weren’t things that could be encapsulated in a single day.
But then, there was May 25th, my dad’s birthday. This day would forever have a different kind of significance, one that shaped not just my calendar, but the very essence of my life. My dad—the man whose presence filled every room with stories, laughter, and an energy that was magnetic—was the one who quietly altered the course of my future.
He never said it outright, but I knew. I knew in the way he worked—relentlessly, with purpose. The sacrifices he made, the hours spent away from home. He had always been a man of few words, but those few were enough to carve out an entire philosophy of life for me. And though there was a time when I resented him for the

distance between us—when I envied my friends who had their dads around more often—I now see everything he did was for us. For family.
My father’s story, like so many in our industry, began humbly. He was a young man from Germany, only 16 when he crossed the ocean to work with his Uncle Anton at Gilbert’s bakery in New Haven, Connecticut. There, he learned the delicate art of baking—the chemistry of flour and water, the delicate dance of heat and time. What started as a trade soon became a lifelong passion, and from there, he rose in the food industry. I remember the days when he’d bring home boxes of cereals from his time at Quaker Oats, my childhood mornings filled with sugarcoated joy as I devoured bowls of fruity, colorful sweetness. But even then, I had no idea just how much more he had accomplished beyond the small samples he gave me.
When he moved on to Pillsbury, I was still too young to understand the true scope of his work. But I do remember the pride in his eyes when he’d talk about Totino’s frozen pizza—the way he helped reimagine it, make it better, more efficient. The work whiskhe did at Pillsbury

didn’t just change the way we ate; it changed the way we lived. And the way I saw food. He was not just creating; he was shaping entire industries, feeding millions without ever needing to be seen by the people who would consume his work.
his office filled with the hum of machinery and the warm scent of pies in various stages of perfection. I’d watch him, learning not just about food, but about life. About sacrifice. About determination. I didn’t know it then, but those quiet afternoons with him would become the foundation for everything I would eventually pursue.
My father never told me how proud he was of me. He didn’t need to. I could see it in his eyes, in the way he’d light up when I shared my own achievements in the food industry. Even though I didn’t follow the exact path he’d walked—never following in his footsteps as closely as I should have—he understood. He saw the fire in me, and though our work didn’t align in the same spaces, our love for food bound us together in ways words never could. He never questioned my choices, only supported them. Always.
When my father passed away in 2016, a part of me went with him. The world lost an incredible man—one whose legacy will never be fully understood. But what I hold onto, what I cherish, is the quiet, enduring love he gave me. He was more than a father. He was my teacher, my inspiration, my mentor, and my hero.

The most significant part of his career came when he was entrusted with the task of improving the quality of pies at Poppin’ Fresh. This small chain would eventually become Bakers’ Square, but to me, it was the place where my father’s heart and soul could truly be tasted. It was there, working as Vice President of Research and Development, that he spent 28 years of his life. It was there that he acquired 40 food patents and won 100 blue ribbons from the American Pie Council. It was there that I began to understand just how much he had given to the world. And through his work, he gave me more than just the legacy of a career in food. He gave me something far more profound: the realization that passion, dedication, and love for what you do will always find a way to make a difference.
There were weekends when my dad would take me to the commissary where he worked,
And so, every May, I celebrate him. Not with grand gestures or loud proclamations, but with a quiet reflection, a gentle remembrance of the man who shaped me, the man who taught me that family is worth every sacrifice. I remember him in the soil, in the baking, in the smell of fresh dough rising. I remember him in every dish I create, in every recipe I perfect, in every moment I push myself to be better.
May is not just the beginning of summer for me. It is the month when I reflect on the lessons he gave me—not through words, but through actions. It is the month when I thank the universe for the man who gave everything for the people he loved and who, in the end, gave me the greatest gift of all: the belief in the power of food, family, and sacrifice.
May will always be his month.

Mason Bees
By Kevin Sage, AIA
In the intricate tapestry of pollinators, mason bees (Osmia spp.) emerge as understated yet indispensable contributors. These solitary, nonaggressive bees are garnering attention for their exceptional pollination efficiency and potential to bolster declining pollinator populations.
Pollination Powerhouses
Mason bees are remarkably efficient pollinators. Unlike honeybees, which carry pollen in specialized baskets on their hind legs, mason bees transport pollen on the undersides of their
flowers as 100 honeybees, visiting up to 2,000 blossoms daily . Their “messy” foraging technique ensures a broader distribution of pollen, enhancing plant fertilization and fruit set.
Lifecycle and Nesting Habits
Mason bees exhibit a solitary lifestyle, with each female independently constructing nests in natural cavities such as hollow stems or preexisting holes in wood. They partition these nests into individual cells using mud—hence the name “mason” bee. Each cell contains a pollen-nectar

pupate, and overwinter in their cocoons, emerging as adults the following spring .
Decline of Pollinators: A Growing Concern
Pollinators are experiencing significant declines globally. In the United States, some bee populations have decreased by over 80% since 2007, even in undisturbed forest habitats . Factors contributing to this decline include habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate change, and diseases. A recent study revealed that more than 22% of native North American pollinators are at an elevated risk of extinction . These declines pose threats to biodiversity, ecosystem stability, and food security.
The Role of Mason Bees in Sustainable Pollination
Given their efficiency and gentle nature, mason bees are increasingly recognized as valuable pollinators in both agricultural and urban settings. They are particularly effective in pollinating early-blooming fruit trees and various crops. Unlike honeybees, mason bees do not produce honey or require complex hives, making them easier to manage for targeted pollination efforts.
Observing Mason Bees in Action
For those interested in witnessing these industrious pollinators, a mason bee hive has been installed among the raised garden beds on the rooftop terrace at The Springs at the Waterfront. Visitors can observe the bees’ nesting behaviors and their vital role in pollinating the rooftop flora.

Incorporating mason bees into our environments not only supports plant reproduction but also contributes to the resilience of our ecosystems amidst the challenges facing pollinator populations today.
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Austin Karn
Born in Portland and raised just across the river in Vancouver, Austin Karn has been all about action since day one! From earning his black belt in Taekwondo to taking home state titles and snagging 4th place at the 2001 Junior Olympics, Austin’s early years were a whirlwind of kicks, flips, and fierce determination.
After high school, he hit the high notes on a music scholarship at Central Washington University before finding his true rhythm in Exercise Science. That path led him to a local community center, where he discovered his passion for helping seniors stay strong, healthy, and full of life—a mission that’s kept him energized for the past 12 years. Bonus: it’s also where he met his amazing wife, Lexi!
Married for seven years, Austin and Lexi are now a team of four, with their spirited daughter Elena (3) and smiley baby boy Cruz (9 months) keeping life fun and full of adventure. When they’re not chasing little ones or trading toddler tales, you’ll find them out on the golf course or cruising around on family bike rides.
Austin’s motto says it all: “Change people’s lives in a positive way through health and fitness.” And that’s exactly what he does—one joyful workout, hearty laugh, and inspiring moment at a time.
