with a REVEL CAUSE
REVEL CAUSE
By Kevin Sage, AIA
This new salon will turn some heads. (and not just for the blowouts)
Walk through the doors of Revel Salon and you’ll immediately sense: this is no ordinary salon. It doesn’t whisper self-care—it celebrates it.
At the helm is Jamie Byer, a powerhouse stylist with a backbone education from Vidal Sassoon, a decade-long run owning a booming salon in Huntington Beach, and a passion that practically radiates from her chair. “Hair is my passion,” she says, “and every day I look forward to making people feel beautiful.”
Revel is Jamie’s latest expression of that passion—a beauty destination designed not only for convenience, but for genuine connection and elevated experience. “True self-care is a ritual, not a routine,” she explains. “It’s the quiet luxury of investing in yourself—not just in how you look, but in how you feel.”
That ethos shows up in every detail. From the sleek, boutique-inspired design to the curated soundtrack (“Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan is her signature vibe) to the subtle elegance of Oribe’s Côte d’Azur scent that lingers in the air like a confident exhale.
The service menu includes haircuts, color, highlights, balayage, perms, extensions, and styling. Additional services—like Hydrafacials, lash extensions, waxing, spray tans, and possibly injectables—are in the works as Jamie continues hiring for the salon’s private suites. “Stay tuned,” she teases.
“I want this to feel like a space where style and confidence are always welcome,” Jamie says. “Style doesn’t have an expiration date.”
She means it. One of her most cherished memories as a stylist involves a client preparing for cancer treatment. “She always wanted a sassy undercut pixie but never had the courage,” Jamie recalls. “So she went for it. We shaved one side, gave her this edgy, high-fashion look—and even though she only had it for a week before starting treatment, she said it was the best haircut of her life. We shaved her head together, took photos, and made a video she could share with her family. That moment—that joy in the midst of vulnerability—is why I do what I do.”
But Revel isn’t just a salon—it’s a statement. It’s a chance to say yes to something bold. To laugh too loud. To wear lipstick and patterns just because they feel good. “Living life to the fullest,” Jamie says, “means treating yourself like the main character—because you are.”
And she has plans for this story to keep unfolding. In time, she hopes to expand the Revel concept to new locations—always with the same commitment to thoughtful design, high-vibe energy, and elevated beauty experiences. But for now, her full attention is on creating something truly special here: a place where luxury doesn’t have to be loud, and indulgence is deeply personal.
Revel Salon is softly open now, with stylists available Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and Sundays by appointment only. Residents can call (360) 816-9710 or simply stop by to schedule.
“From the moment they walk in,” Jamie says, “they feel seen, welcomed, and unrushed.”
Confidence doesn’t come with an age—it comes with a great haircut and a glass of bubbly.
And at Revel, you can absolutely have both.

Jamie Byer

WRAPPED IN AStory
There’s something timeless and comforting about a handmade quilt—the weight of fabric, the stitched patterns, the feeling of care woven into every inch. On July 30, that warmth takes center stage at the Resident Quilt Showcase, a vibrant celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of quilting.
Open to all, from curious newcomers to seasoned stitchers, the showcase will feature a stunning array of quilts—each one with its own personality and story. And at the heart of it all is Nancy Dudley, a familiar and beloved face in our quilting community.
With over 45 years of experience and hundreds of quilts to her name, Nancy’s approach is refreshingly down-to-earth. “You don’t have to be a master to make a quilt,” she says. “Sometimes, the simpler, the better. I just have fun coming up with different ideas.”
For Nancy, quilts are made to be used—not tucked away. “I know a woman who wins awards, but her quilts never get used,” she says. “I’ve made lap quilts for assisted living and kitty quilts for vets—those are fun and fast. Sometimes I use fish fabric to make them playful.”
Nancy will be at the showcase to share her process and even demonstrate how to make her cheerful kitty quilts. Her enthusiasm is contagious: “There’s lots of people out there that would enjoy having a quilt, so I make them and
pass them on. The fabrics that are out there now are unbelievable.”
Her quilting journey began humbly on a farm in Silverton Hills. “I’d sewn, but never a full quilt,” she recalls. “Then I made one for my daughter. And of course, you have to make one for the other daughter. After two, it’s not too bad.”
Since then, she’s explored everything from optical illusions and French bridges to custom chuppahs and Pittock Mansion fundraisers. She credits quilting groups and classes for keeping her inspired: “You learn from other people.”
Thinking about picking up quilting or dusting off an old project? Nancy’s eager to connect with anyone who’s interested. “If there are people who’d like to toss ideas back and forth,” she says, suggesting the Ink Spot as a gathering place, “let’s talk!”
2:00pm - Wednesday, July 30th – 3S
The Resident Quilt Showcase is more than an exhibit—it’s a chance to be part of a creative tradition, whether you’re showcasing your own work or simply soaking up inspiration.
To participate or learn more, sign up on the TSL app or contact Nancy Dudley or Laura McCormack.

Resident Corner with Robert Wright
Robert Wright was born, raised, educated, and married in Portland, Oregon. Graduating from the University of Portland, he entered the United States Air Force as a commissioned second lieutenant. Suffering chronic airsickness in the primary jet trainer, the Air Force pointed him in a different direction: meteorology. Over the next twenty-six years he served as a weather forecaster and staff weather officer and attained a master’s degree from the University of Utah. Bob served as a weather detachment commander, squadron commander, and twice as a wing commander. He retired at the rank of colonel. Bob and his wife, Janice, had two daughters along the way.
After the Air Force, he moved to Vancouver, Washington, and worked for two years for his older brother in his successful marine business on Highway 99 near Salmon Creek. Bob then moved to Northern Virginia and spent over a decade on the Washington, D.C. Beltway managing research and development. He and Janice returned to Portland to live their retirement years near their families, children, and grandchildren, then moved across the river to The Springs at the Waterfront. After writing tomes of regulations, manuals, and technical reports that people had to read, he aimed at writing things that people may want to read and has self-published (https://www. wrightstuffpress.com).
Back in the sanguine days of 1984, I was the weather squadron commander responsible for supporting United States forces assigned to the United Kingdom. The base public affairs officer rang me up. A nearby Rotary Club requested somebody to speak about weather at their annual Christmas do. It was to be a tuxedoed black-tie affair. I accepted, then rang up the head of the regional British Met Office. We worked together cooperatively. He agreed to join me. I would present an overview of weather theory and forecasting; he would cover the weather services provided to the public in East Anglia. A Brit and a Yank, separated by a common language. What a team.
I drove, left side, though the thick, dark Thetford Forest, then over winding narrow farmland roads through charming hamlets: Quidenham and Old Buckenham. With difficulty, I managed to find the old pub. I wore my mess dress uniform, the military equivalent of a tuxedo. The chap from the Met Office pulled into the gravel parking lot at the same time. We shook hands and went in. Pints in hand, men in posh tuxedos stood under low, dark hand-chiseled beams the colour of Guiness. The deep musty smell spoke of the age and character of England. Greeted and welcomed, soon we were sipping good stout.
One in the group caught my attention. He wore a white porcelain pot upside down on his head. My host answered my inquisitive look, “Ian raised the least money for charity this year, so he has to wear the chamber pot.”
The Christmas goose was cooked; it was time to eat. My Met Office friend and I were invited to sit at the head table. Conversation continued. The bloke responsible for requesting the guest speaker sat next to me. I humbly offered that I hoped my presentation would not be too boring. He leaned back with a hearty laugh, “Can’t be any worse than last year. The strippers from London got lost and never showed up.”
Well now, that provided a different perspective. Considering the chamber pot, I breathed a sigh of relief; a low bar … or perhaps not.

Pickles, Play, and Plasticity: How a Jar of Brine Can Boost Your Brain
By Kevin Sage, AIA

This July, The Springs is throwing a briny bash with Pickle Palooza—and while the pickling, pickleballing, and scavenger-hunting may seem like pure fun, neuroscience says your brain is soaking up the benefits.
Let’s start with the literal pickles. Fermented foods like classic dills are packed with probiotics—live, beneficial bacteria that support gut health. And here’s the twist: your gut and brain are in constant conversation via what›s known as the gutbrain axis. Researchers at Harvard and the National Institutes of Health have found that a healthy gut microbiome may reduce
inflammation, lift mood, and even enhance memory. Scientists now understand that gut bacteria can influence brain chemistry by producing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine—making them surprisingly powerful contributors to cognitive well-being.
So yes, that crunchy kosher spear might be doing more than tingling your taste buds—it could be helping your neurons function more smoothly.
But Pickle Palooza isn’t just about flavor— it’s about fun, which turns out to be serious brain business. Whether you’re volleying pickleballs or decoding a scavenger hunt, you’re tapping into one of the most powerful tools for maintaining mental sharpness: play. Studies from institutions like the Mayo Clinic and University of Texas show that engaging in social, playful activities can strengthen neural connections, boost executive function, and promote lifelong learning.
Then there’s the pickling workshop— measuring, layering, seasoning—all of which engage procedural memory and fine motor skills. According to the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, hands-on learning stimulates regions of the brain involved in focus, planning, and memory formation.
Even the film An American Pickle, which caps off the week, gives your brain a final workout. Narrative storytelling lights up multiple neural networks, boosting empathy, imagination, and cognitive flexibility.
So here’s to a week that’s equal parts silly and smart. Pickle Palooza might look like a quirky celebration, but behind the laughs and brine is a stealthy brain-boosting bonanza.
Whack a ball. Sip a tangy cocktail. Make a mess in the kitchen. Your brain will love it.
