Saving a Living Fossil, a Unique Eatery, and Earth Day 2023 Tinker, Taylor, and Liège Waffle Maker

Eastern Sierra, CA—Surviving the Great Winter of 2022-2023 is resident and business owner, Taylor Lyon. No easy feat for Pupfish Cafe’s owner, and Bishop, CA resident. “I love Bishop,” says Taylor, while taking in snow-capped vistas in all directions. Taylor took the time to describe her journey at Pupfish Cafe, and the lessons she’s learning and living in the Eastern Sierra. Pupfish Cafe is a homage to the Owens Valley pupfish, but more about that later.

Pupfish Cafe was in limbo, about six months back, and Taylor decides to buy the small, uncommon cafe in downtown Bishop, CA. She’s worked there, over the years, and she’s lived, climbed, and worked at businesses in the region for nearly a decade. But, Taylor’s curiosity is her driving force, and taking on the Pupfish Cafe seems the right ascent to make.

Specialty, locally sourced menu items are the mainstays of Pupfish Cafe. Liège Belgian waffles, in particular, are a menu “star,” and what makes them so special, Taylor sits down outside the cafe to explain. The Belgian yeasty brioche dough treks / shipped across the country, from East (New Jersey) to West (Bishop, CA). No one has West Coast dough, yet. At 30 waffles a day, Taylor notes there is some serious waffle making in the kitchen.

The Liège Belgian waffles are cooked on a special, and time-tested, cast iron waffle iron. And, luxurious Belgian pearl sugar is incorporated into the batter, leaving the extra light, deep pocketed, and chewier waffle with caramelized bites in the waffle. Bedecked with strawberries and whipped cream for dessert, or plain, or as a breakfast with eggs and sausage, the Liège Belgian waffles are a hit here. Brought to Seattle, Washington, in

the 1960s, via the Brussels 1958 Expo, the Liège waffles have a history back to the 18th century. The Pupfish Cafe is also well-known for “Marsha’s” quiches, and baked goods, vegan / vegetarian / gluten-free dishes, paninis, sandwiches (like Taylor’s Curry Chicken Salad), uncommon coffee drinks (locally sourced beans),

a “Doodle Book,” and ambiance. Taylor has been surprised by the “community support,” and says, “Everyone loves our food.” She’s “excited for spring,” and “interacting with the community.” She’s also tinkering around with more evening ideas, like the recent “Vinyl Night” for record enthusiasts they had this winter, and some

Saved from Extinction

The Owens Valley Pupfish, a cousin to guppies, was saved from extinction, starting in the 1960s. Phil Pister, a wildlife biologist, saved a small group of fish in August of 1969, and using buckets, he kept a “living fossil” alive, for another 12,000 years, perhaps. There are the Devil’s Hole Desert pupfish in Nevada, and these join the rare fish category. Bright blue, when mating, the males fertilize the eggs, laid one at a time by the female. The Death Valley Pupfish are leftovers from Lake Manly, 185,000- 128,000 years ago. Others saved for our investments in the planet: the Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, the Great Basin Bristlecone, the Owens Valley Checkerbloom flower, and the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog.

Ridgecrest, CA—AltaOne Federal Credit Union received notice from the US Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) that it has been awarded a $2,478,839

Equitable Recovery Program Grant (ERP Grant). A total of $1.73 billion in grants were awarded by the CDFI Fund to 603 Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) nationwide. “We want to thank the U.S. Treasury for recognizing the work that AltaOne has done in supporting the residents of Kern, Mono, and Inyo counties”, said AltaOne CEO Stephanie Sievers. “This grant award will increase AltaOne’s ability to continue rebuilding and investing in communities that have been impacted by the pandemic, climate change, and those that have been neglected by other mainstream financial institutions.”

This is the second and last installment of the funding set aside as part of the “Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act” to be deployed by the CDFI Fund to expand the capacity of CDFIs to help revitalize communities most impacted. Proceeds from the ERP Grant will be used to expand lending, grant making, and investment activities in underserved, low- to moderate-income communities and to borrowers with unmet capital and financial service needs. AltaOne serves many areas that have limited or no availability to financial services.

Funds for the ERP Grant were authorized by congress in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 to respond to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grant awards were announced today by Vice President Kamala Harris and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo.

AltaOne received its Certified CDFI status in May 2022 and was assigned an Investment Area and Low-Income Target Population in Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, San Bernardino, and Tulare counties in California; Clark County, Nevada; and Mohave County, Arizona.
