Bishop SDA Church Honors Congregant Admired as ‘A Force for Good’

Imagine being so loved and appreciated by your fellow believers that when you died, they sent for one of Jesus’ own disciples so he could bring you back from the dead.

According to the New Testament’s Book of the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9, verses 3643, this happened to a kind woman named Dorcas, who was resurrected by the Apostle Peter.

Now imagine, as a modern-day believer, being compared to Dorcas for your good deeds, and honored in front of your entire congregation with words of praise, a plaque, a gorgeous bouquet of roses and a gift certificate to Anne Marie’s Home Boutique on Bishop’s Main Street.

Well, that is exactly what happened Saturday to Kathy Reid, 82, who has been a faithful and engaged member of Bishop Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church since she and her husband, Don, and their children moved here from Loma Linda in San Bernardino County in 1965.

“We have a Dorcas among us as well, and we want to honor her while she is with us,” said fellow congregant Summer Frazier of the church’s social committee. Frazier called Reid “a force for good.”

Reid, who is very unassuming and was totally surprised by the gesture, buried her face in her hands and cried with emotion at the piano, which she plays faithfully during Saturday (or Sabbath) service. She also does landscaping for the church and adorns the altar with flower arrangements. Other of her contributions include having worked as a teacher and principal of Bishop Adventist Christian School, which is next door to the church on Home Street, for 17 years; having taken the schoolchildren on a number of trips throughout the U.S. and overseas; and even having helped put together a stained-glass window once.

“I just love this church,” Reid said.

Some words of public praise for her included:

“I see the love of Jesus in your smile and what you do for people.” – Church Pastor Mario Navarro, Jr.

“We love God so much and the Sabbath because of Mom and Dad. Mom, I love you so much. Thanks for what you’ve done for your church and for your children.” – Son Mike Reid, a nurse anesthetist.

“Thank you, Kathy Reid, for your many years blessing us with your talent. Bishop SDA Church, 2023.” – Wording on the plaque presented to her.

Following the service, a potluck lunch in Reid’s honor was held at the Starlite home of fellow church members Norma and Norman Reitz. Norma Reitz has known Reid since high school.

“We all appreciate what she’s done,” she said.

“It’s such an honor to celebrate her life now instead of afterwards,” said Mike Reid, who made the four-and-a-half-hour trip up from Loma Linda, where he lives, for the occasion, as did his sister, Julie Duffie, a speech pathologist who plays the flute and accompanied her

mother on a hymn.

As to whose idea it was to surprise Reid in this way, Frazier said, “I think that was God’s idea. He plants the seed in the brain.”

ELKS EASTER EGG HUNT

Eastern Sierra, California—Residents and visitors are getting ready for an in-person Easter and spring time celebrations, even as getting to some of the destinations remain a challenge, due to the extreme weather this year. Towns up and down US Highway 395 will be having Easter events, but not all of these towns are hosting celebrations, so here’s a bit of a run-down of some of the places having events this weekend.

Easter is the oldest Christian holiday on record, with the Easter Egg hunt, on Easter Sunday, being a German tradition brought to the United States. There are also special church services, and bird eggs in hats of straw and flowers as décor, which are associated with this time of year. And, the traditional hot cross buns are a religious reminder of the special Christian holiday.

The Lone Pine Lions’ Club is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt, Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m., at the Lone Pine Sports Complex.

Bishop has a number of Community Easter Egg Hunts, including The Salvation Army and Community Easter Egg Hunt, Saturday, April 8, 9:30 a.m., at Home Street Middle School, Bishop, CA, for ages newborn to 13 years old. There will be games and prizes, a special egg, and a chance to hear the story of the resurrection of Jesus. For more information: 760-872-2124

On the Horizon for Spring

Residents of the Eastern Sierra, according to the IRS, are entitled to the Tax Relief, and this postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting January 8, 2023. “Those affected have until October 16, 2023, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.” (IRS.gov)

In line with the IRS, the state of California’s Franchise Tax Board issued on March 2, 2023, “California is extending the tax filing deadline for Californians impacted by December and January winter storms to October 16, 2023—aligning with the IRS.” Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties have been declared in local emergencies, due to atmospheric river events which started on January 9, 2023. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency for Mono County on March 1, 2023, as well as the Town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. This is the third emergency declaration in Mono County, since January 2, 2023.

Storm damages can be accounted for in tax returns (as losses or damage or repairs), and there is Individual and Public Assistance available for some Eastern California residents and businesses through the state’s website for storm victims. Tax filing for Californians in the storm-affected areas, like Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties, have been extended to October 16, 2023.

Eastern Sierra, CA—The Eastern Sierra Little League girls’ softball teams are lining up for action at the Barlow Lane Field, and the Bishop City Park Diamond #1, and Lisa Manuelito, President of ESLL and assistant coach for the juniors, says the league is off to a good start. They had their first meeting at Mill Pond Recreation Area last weekend, and they are enjoying a large line-up of young ladies.

The Eastern Sierra Little League was founded in 1990, by Manuelito and her husband, Mark, and a group of others in the area. “It’s a local league, formed to play ball,” says Manuelito.
