Tailwaggers celebrates the happy years

Bishop, CA—Johnathon Seely, owner of Tailwaggers in Bishop, CA, is celebrating the happy years down in the Owens Valley, and they’re inviting us to join them, Monday, March 27. The popular pet store is putting out a wide selection of all kinds of pet products, and pets (fish and reptiles), and as spring unfolds in the Sierra, the types of practical and unique products for the region are really exciting additions to the business.

People are nuts about pets, and ownership levels have been trending higher. It is estimated by a pet ownership / demographic study that about 57 percent of America’s households have at least one pet. Dogs (63.4 million) have trended higher than cats (42.7 million), and statistics are complicated (pawlicy.com 2019-2020) by states that don’t allow some pets (like “exotics”) without special permits. Freshwater fish, birds, reptiles, horses, saltwater fish, and others (insects) round out the top pet picks.

Pet owners are a mixed group, with age and where they live making pet choices the factors as to what critters they own. Most pet owners are between 40-54 years old (64 percent); ages 55-74 years old (50-54 percent), and younger, 2539 years old (27 percent). Many owners are married, and there appears to be a correlation between your income and pets. Horses take first place with highernet-worth, then they own dogs, cats, fish, and birds.

Los Angeles has the most pet owners (2.6 million), and the American Kennel Club says the Labrador Retriever is still the most popular dog breed. Californians, about 40 percent, own a pet, and 40 percent own dogs, and nearly 23 percent own cats. In neighboring Nevada, 53 percent own a pet; nearly 37 percent own a dog, and 23 percent own a cat.

Johnathon says the pet owners and visitors in the Bishop store are looking for a

" M y w i f e , K i m H a w k i n s , moved to Heaven in February 2023.

I'm happy for her being there with Jesus right now Her eyes closed here and then opened with great joy in heaven.

Kim and I met in Mammoth Lakes, California, and have enjoyed living in the region before we met and ever since. We were married for 27 years.

I wish you could have seen the gleam of heaven and the peace of God in Kim's eyes in the week before her passing. Knowing where you're going makes all the difference. She is with Jesus in the place He prepared for her. What can be better than that? I'm deeply grateful to God for using Kim to spread His love right up to the end.

She was a blessing to all and will be missed. For now I'll just say, see you later Kim.

The restored 1911 Carson and Colorado Railroad Baldwin Locomotive #18 visits sister Slim Princess #9 at Laws Station

That famous saying about “neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night” keeping couriers from appointed rounds, is often credited to the Pony Express Riders of 1860-61, and sometimes mistakenly assumed to be the motto of the U.S. Postal Service. It is neither, but it may well be the new motto of Inyo County’s local railroad workers. Every imaginable barrier to success was thrown at the Laws RR Museum’s volunteer train crew and the Carson and Colorado Railway’s volunteer train crew. Railfans nationwide have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to ride the original Carson and Colorado narrow gauge rails at Laws Museum, behind the restored #18 steam locomotive March 18-19 and 25-26 to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the first train’s arrival at Laws Station. Despite the proverbial “rain and snow and gloom” --- in this case of road closures and flash floods accompanied by mechanical problems and detours--both teams persevered, and the visitors to Laws RR Museum last week saw the #18 transferred from the heavy hauler track to temporary track, and then onto her home track: the remaining 3000 feet of the original 300+ mile narrow gauge that once ran from Mound House, Nevada to Keeler California. Those who missed the boat (or rather the train) last weekend, have another chance this weekend, March 25-26, to experience the profound connection to history that riding the historic 401 caboose behind the Historic Baldwin engine brings. Don’t miss this opportunity! By the way, the original quote about persevering against obstacles is actually from Herodotus, 2500 years ago. And if you missed the Laws Women History Day celebration of Women in 19th century and early 20th century mining, well, we all did. Closure of Hwy 6 forced postponement of the event to April 8th 11:00am to 2:30pm. Our history docents look forward to telling you about women’s contribution to western mining history. The first 49 visitors to collect autographs from six of our twelve docents will receive a bag of polished rocks from our gift shop. We look forward to seeing you! Don’t miss these two opportunities to experience history at Laws Railroad Museum and Historical Site.

Kingsley Re-Appointed to Regional BLM Council, Elected Chairperson

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has reappointed Inyo County Fifth District Supervisor Matt Kingsley to the Bureau of Land Management’s Central California Resource Advisory Council (RAC). The RAC held its first meeting of the year on February 22, at which time Kingsley was elected Chairperson. Kingsley was first appointed to the RAC in 2014. With the ongoing support of the Board of Supervisors, he has been reappointed to three successive three-year terms on the advisory council, which is comprised of a diverse membership chosen for their expertise in natural resource issues. RAC members specifically advise the BLM on issues affecting the Bakersfield, Bishop, Central Coast, Mother Lod, and Ukiah field offices. According to the BLM, the 12 members represent a balance of public land resources and users in the following categories: conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials, tribal officials, and academics. Prior to being elected Fifth District Supervisor, Kingsley had a long and distinguished career in fire management with the U.S. Forest Service and BLM. In supporting his most recent bid for reappointment, the Board noted in a June 7, 2022 letter to Secretary Haaland that Kingsley’s extensive public land use management experience has served the RAC and the BLM well and reappointing him will ensure continuity of excellence. Board members also acknowledged that Kingsley’s presence on the council is an added benefit to Inyo County, where over 98% of the land is owned by public agencies. “We believe that our constituents are some of the best stewards of our public lands because of the community’s dependency on the uses of those lands, and Supervisor Kingsley is a fine representative of our constituents,” the Board wrote. Haaland echoed those sentiments. “As a Council member, your advice regarding the management of public land resources within the Council’s jurisdiction has been of great value to the BLM and aided in the development of balanced decisions that serve the interests of all public land users,” she stated.

Board Names New Water Director

INDEPENDENCE – Longtime Bishop resident Holly Alpert, Ph.D. has been tapped to serve as Inyo County’s new Water Director. The Board of Supervisors’ decision to appoint Alpert was announced on Tuesday, March 7 following closed session discussions. She will be taking the reins from outgoing Director Aaron Steinwand, who has served in that role since 2019, as he transitions out of the water world and into retirement later this year. Alpert will be serving in an Acting Director capacity during the transition period. Alpert was initially hired by the County to serve as Deputy Water Director in December 2022 with the ultimate intention of her stepping into the Director role. At the time, she was serving on the Inyo County Water Commission, having been appointed in 2020. Alpert has a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies, with a focus on plant ecology and water policy in the Eastern Sierra. Since receiving her degree, she has been working on regional water-related issues, including working for 16 years with the Inyo-Mono Integrated Regional Water Management Program (IRWMP), ending her career as program director. During her tenure, IRWMP brought more than $7 million in programmatic and project grant money to the region to support resilient water systems and healthy ecosystems. Concurrently, Alpert founded the Bishop-based non-profit Whitebark Institute, which has been focusing on community and regional fire resiliency efforts. “This position serves as a capstone of my academic and professional career,” said Alpert upon receiving the Board’s endorsement. “With over 20 years of experience working in the field and developing relationships throughout the region, Inyo County feels extremely lucky to be bringing such a talented new member into our team,” CAO Nate Greenberg said.

continue reading here 13 number of types of pet products, including the “supplies for dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, and small animals.” Known for having affordable pet supplies in the Owens Valley, they also carry “natural treats, made and manufactured in the US,” says, Randi Stallings, the store’s manager.

Abril-14-Jueves-de-2022

Pet Product Celebrities

Trending in the Eastern Sierra are products which relieve anxiety, and Stallings notes that “natural remedies, that aren’t CBDs” and “CBDs” are available for pets. Strong toys, to withstand the chewing of active pups, and collars and harnesses in many styles for pets are also very popular. The store has choices for dog safety seats / car seats / harnesses, heated animal pads (since we don’t seem to be out of winter, yet), stress-relievers, such as “Licki Mats” and bathing and grooming products.

Stallings describes that even fish and reptiles like “stimulation,” and while there aren’t any toys for them, there are “hides,” which encourage them to swim or move around and through certain interesting objects in their tanks. “They like adventure,” says Stallings, and “they like sticks, plants, hides, and décor.” Who knew?

Products that shine at Tailwaggers are its human-grade foods, slow-feeding bowls (for those pets who mow through their food), pet clickers, and a variety of puzzle toys. Unique and special orders are available, and you just have to inquire. Many of the products available at the store, are some-what seasonal, so you can see winter-type products and spring-summer items at the same time. This makes planning for your pet’s up-coming season, in style and comfort, possible, and Tailwaggers offers a well-equipped and warm pet washing area, and nail trimming. And, Tailwaggers has a member system, which keeps track of your previous purchases, so if you forget, the friendly, knowledgeable staff can help remind you.

And, if all this interest in our pets comes as a surprise, it shouldn’t. Humans have bonded with “pets,” as archaeological evidence shows, since we “domesticated” dogs...more than 30,000 years ago during Paleolithic times.
