I am so excited to share the very first issue of the Scottish Wedding Hair & Makeup Directory Magazine! This digital magazine is designed with you in mind, offering lots of wedding hair and makeup inspiration to help make your special day truly unforgettable.
A little bit about me My name is Hania and I am a Wedding Makeup Artist based near Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway I studied at the Academy of Makeup Scotland in 2015 and quickly found my passion for natural wedding makeup
The Scottish Wedding Hair & Makeup Directory launched at the start of 2023. I found there was a gap in the market for finding Wedding Hair and Makeup artists in Scotland. I was getting a lot of enquiries for weddings in places like Glencoe and the Scottish Highlands and wondered why as I am not based near there. I soon realised many of these Brides were not local so they wouldn’t know where I cover. I then started looking into Directorys and noticed they weren’t focused on hair and makeup and beauty. So I decided to start one myself.
After looking for a suitable platform, I decided to start building the Directory in January 2023. The Directory has grown so much since then, it’s so much more than just an online Listing. Our members are now part of a fab community of some of the best Wedding Hair and Makeup Artists in Scotland.
Warmest Regards
Hania

Located in Lanarkshire, Folkerton Mill provided the perfect backdrop for a beautiful styled shoot I organised in July 2024.
The photoshoot brought together some talented creatives in the wedding industry and member Donna Nelson from Alcheme provided the makeup for model Jo.
Donna from Alcheme Beauty shares the products used and the inspiration behind the makeup look.
“Inspiration for this photoshoot was free spirited bohemian bride to compliment this stunning unique dress My go-to for this look was the Charlotte Tilbury “Stars in Your Eyes” Palette This palette is a gem for brides and photoshoots alike, thanks to its blendable, versatile shades I focused on the bold pinks in the palette, using them to create a vibrant, eye-catching look For the lips I used Charlotte Tilbury’s “The Queen” Lipstick, a stunning deep rosy pink To add more depth and richness, I blended it with a touch of MAC’s Rebel, creating a custom shade
Of course a bohemian bride needs lots of glow. My go-to for this is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Unlocked Palette, which delivers that lit-from-within soft glow”.
Keira from Alterego Hair Art created stunning hairstyles that perfectly complemented the makeup and the overall aesthetic of Bohemian bride
The dresses, provided by Flossy and Dossy, were nothing short of breathtaking As soon as I seen the selection of dresses I could use, I fell in love with them all, especially the celestial one, seeing as I am obsessed with anything with stars on it
And the gorgeous off grey dress looked perfect on Model Jo I love that it has lace sleeves that could be added to it
Adding a sweet touch to the shoot was the gorgeous cake designed by Cherry Blossom Cake Designs

I caught up with Penny, Founder and Co Owner of Folkerton Mill to find out more about their fab wedding venue
What makes Folkerton Mill a unique choice for couples looking to tie the knot in Scotland?
You won't find another venue quite like Folkerton Mill! It is so beautifully unique, having your wedding at Folkerton Mill is like having your wedding at your very own private retreat We have the Mill Building, Hay Barn, Fire Pits, Courtyard, Gardens next to Poniel Burn and the Stretch Tent
You get so much fabulousness and choice all rolled into a single beautiful venue. In addition to all the wonderful space, Folkerton Mill is a family run business and only hosts a handful of weddings each year, meaning each wedding is bespoke and as unique as you!
Can you describe the overall atmosphere and aesthetic of Folkerton Mill?
Folkerton Mill specialises in bespoke, unique weddings with a super friendly, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere We do weddings because we love people, we are crazy about weddings and serious about people.
Our philosophy means that you can be rest assured that our heart and soul will go into your celebration, nothing is too much trouble and we will go above and beyond to make your day perfect.
What are some of the standout features of Folkerton Mill that make it an ideal backdrop for wedding photos?
We have been told many, many times that our venue is a photographers dream, there are no bad angles at Folkerton Mill! This means that you photographer can capture all those important and candid moments knowing that every photo will be perfect.
That said, there are definitely some gorgeous spots and our favourites have got to be the courtyard at dusk with the festoon lights and the water wheel beneath the Silver Birch trees in the garden
What types of wedding packages do you offer, and how are they tailored to meet the needs of different couples?
We have lovingly crafted three beautiful packages named after trees and plants growing at Folkerton Mill and that hold a special place in Celtic history and Scottish culture
The Silver Birch symbolises the start of new beginnings with the promise of new life and love; this is our Saturday Wedding Package includes everything you need to host your celebration while giving you the freedom to organise all the fun bits that make your wedding unique to you
The Rowan Tree symbolises wisdom and protection; this is our Wednesday Wedding Package and offers the same as the Silver Birch package but with a weekday wedding price. Ivy symbolises the eternal binding together of lovers; this is our Elopement Wedding Package and includes everything you need to elope for a beautiful wedding with everything taken care of for you
Can you walk us through the process from booking the venue to the wedding day? What kind of support can couples expect from your team? Penny is there for you every step of the way with as much or as little support as you need Penny is always there to chat wedding things, show you around the Folkerton Mill, offer advice, make recommendations and coordinate your wedding day
Do you offer any unique services or amenities that set Folkerton Mill apart from other venues?
Our packages are quite unique compared to other similar 'dry-hire' venues because furniture, cleaning, lighting, staff, etc are included in our packages We can also offer some exciting extras like a bespoke wedding website, content capture and natural confetti.
Is there on-site accommodation available for the wedding party and guests? If so, what are the options?
The Farm House is available from 2026 This gorgeous sandstone building built in the 1800s sits in the heart of the venue and can sleep up to 10 people in 5 bedrooms. Its star feature is a wooden balcony that overhangs Poniel Burn with stunning views across the garden and surrounding countryside, perfect for relaxing in the hot tub with a wee glass of something delicious
What dining options are available for wedding receptions at Folkerton Mill, and can you accommodate special dietary requirements?
Couples are free to choose any catering that suits their taste and budget.
Do you have partnerships with local caterers or chefs? How is the menu tailored to reflect the couple’s preferences?
We can recommend some fabulous caterers that we have worked with and produce the most incredible food.
Where is Folkerton Mill located, and what are the transportation options for guests travelling?
Folkerton Mill is in South Lanarkshire about 30 miles from Glasgow and 35 miles from Edinburgh. We are easily accessible by car/ taxi directly or our nearest train/ bus station is Lanark and we are just a 15 minute taxi journey
How can couples personalise their wedding at Folkerton Mill to reflect their individual style and story?
At Folkerton Mill we specialise in bespoke weddings so this means that everything is customisable from the timings for your day to the drinks we stock on the bar! you can even create your own wedding cocktail!
What is the most rewarding aspect of hosting weddings at Folkerton Mill, and how do you ensure each couple has a magical experience?
Folkerton Mill is so special to us and we love being able to share it with people to bring them joy and make memories. We really love weddings and it is an absolute privilege to be involved in celebrations
Everyone married here is as much a part of our journey and our history as we are a part of theirs and we get to know each and every couple really well during their wedding planning and often they become friends and it is this personal touch and care that makes Folkerton Mill a really magical experience
Do you have any memorable stories of past weddings held at Folkerton Mill that highlight the venue’s charm and flexibility? So many stories as each wedding is different and unique, but we could highlight a few; we have had a neuro-spicy snug set up in the back room in the Mill, as well as a gaming room and a kids corner.
We have had twilight wedding ceremonies as late as 5pm and morning ceremonies as early as 11am! We have had traditional wedding breakfasts served in the Barn, picnics with guests sitting on blankets in the garden, food trucks, an ice cream van, a crepe truck, fish and chip van and everything in between for the wedding breakfasts.
The only space that hasn't been used for the wedding breakfast is underneath the stretch tent (we would love someone to choose this!), the wedding breakfasts have been served in the Mill, Barn and the Courtyard!
We have had loads of dogs join in with their owners' celebrations We have served all sorts of cocktails with unique names special to the marrying couple and we have had beer-barrows and prosecco ladders.
We have had a pinata in the barn and disco balls in the trees outside We could go on and on but the take home message is that we are probably one of the most flexible wedding venues in Scotland!

Could you share your journey in becoming a wedding photographer and What inspired you to specialise in weddings?
I have an arts degree, specialising in cinematography and photography, so making still and moving art has always been there. Weddings came about for me during the transitional phase of film into digital photography. I had received wedding images as a groom that I wasn't overly happy withprimarily becuase it was all very static and posed
A friend of mine, Andy Bryson, had taken some candid images during the day and captured how the day felt - that inspired me to seek those moments out during a day and piqued my interest in people photography, particulary weddings
Weddings are a beautiful kind of chaos for me, they're busy, noisy, filled with love and sub-plots, and generally full of laughter and fun. I've never felt like I was working at a wedding, it's like hanging out with new friends and capturing a story line of the day for people to look back on and remember how they felt that day
Do you have experience with Scottish weddings specifically?
Primarily, I'm a wedding and elopmenent photographer in Scotland but I do travel, and I also do family and corporate work when it comes along.
How would you describe your photography style? Can you adapt your style to suit different couples’ preferences?
My overall style is designed to fit around couples' and their prefrerences and needs on the day I have a very relaxed but organised approach to a wedding or elopement, but if I had to choose a few words to describe my work they would be; documentary, cinematic, editorial, and images that are true to colour
The word storyteller has become overused, but through my eye I am trying to build a narrative of emotions and vibes from the day, bringing out the couple's vision and personalities where I can.
What is your approach to capturing candid photos versus posed photos? How do you balance these during a wedding? My approach to candid is often just to mingle with guests, say hello and chat to them first of all I'll then swing back round and take some photos of what is happening - I don't try to hide or hide that I'm taking pictures. I find chatting to people first makes them more relaxed than catching someone out of the corner of their eye snapping them mid-canape with a long lens
There are times that I'll shoot candids throughout the day - typically while the bride is getting her dress on, before and straight after the ceremony, before dinner and at the evening reception I'll often sweep the tables to get some shots I'm always looking for those genuine moments in between everything I'm doing though, no matter what room I'm in
How do you collaborate with other vendors, such as hair and makeup artists, on the wedding day?
On the day with other vendors I find it's really important to go and say hello and introduce yourself if you've not worked together before I'll do my best not to get in anyone's way during hair and makeup, and if there's anything that the artists would like for their own use, I'll ask and do my best to shoot that and share after the wedding or ask the bride and groom to share with them
My gallery provider, Pic-time, now has a cool built in vendor share function so that's made sharing images a whole lot easier
What is your post-production process like? How long does it typically take to deliver the final photos?
Over the last 18 months I have experimented with providing a greater number of preview images within 24-48 hours of the wedding day and that's been a huge hit with couples as I've given them a selection from each part of the day to share immediately.
Full galleries take around 8 weeks to deliver after culling, colouring and editingbut that's dependant on the time of year, whether it's mid-season or off-season I am looking at ways to improve that, though, as I appreciate that 8 weeks is a long time to wait for the rest of your gallery.
Do you offer any additional services, such as albums or prints? How do you help couples choose the right options?
I have a legacy package with a wedding album, and also sell albums, prints, cards and other printed materials and wall art through my online store. Education is key to helping couple's choose the right option for them
A high street printer isn't going to be able to match the quality of a professional lab that uses archival paper and colourmatched print processing That has the biggest impact on reproduction of images, and the longevity. I love seeing my couple's art in print, on their walls and in wedding albums and I know they do too
How do you handle unexpected challenges on the wedding day? Can you share an example of a challenge you overcame?
I try to do this using empathy, perspective over perception. And by that I mean, I will have my own perception of an event which can be filled with bias or other personal experiences, but in being empathetic and looking at the broader perspective (very often that's going to be the couples' perspective and the guests' experience) I can quickly adapt my approach or help manage feelings and situations. Often, that's been giving people a little space and flexing what I need to do over the course of the day.
One couple I worked with last year were overwhelmed by the ceremony and they asked for some time alone, away from their guests, to regroup Normally, we'd be getting family portraits and couple portraits straight after the ceremony to keep things moving and avoid delays for the chefs and speeches.
However, I acknowledged how the couple were feeling and left them for twenty mins completely on their own I explained to the co-ordinator, and moved when I would do the couple shoot to avoid a delay, I also had help from one of the bridesmaids during the family portraits to get those done as quickly as possible.
What advice do you have for couples choosing a wedding photographer? What questions should they ask?
Instagram and Pinterest are your friends when looking for a photographer. They are both extremely powerful search engines, I'd suggest searching for keywords like the country you're getting married in, the name of the venue or area you're getting married in, and perhaps (if you know) the style of photography you'd like, for example documentary, editorial, colourful and such Make boards and use the inbuilt save and bookmark features to create a visualisation of what you like.
Next up is looking at photographer's websites that your search or recommendations have identified Dig into those about me, services, pricing pages, and their portfolio Look for testimonials and reviews from past couples Reach out and chat to a few photographers - I highly recommend meeting up for a coffee or at least having a video call. Ask to see one or two full day galleries to get an idea of consistency, and how your photographer works
How can couples best prepare for their wedding photos?
Great question! It's going to be different for everyone, but I'd recommend that most couple's take up the offer of an engagment or couple's session prior to their day. It serves a few purposes - vibing with your photographer, learning how to step past any awkwardness you might feel in front of the camera, and you get awesome images of you to share - which could be used for those save the date cards, among other things. Mindful breathing before and during the day really helps, and it's something I build into couple shoots Feeling and looking your best is a personal thing, but making sure hair and makeup is as you'd like it, dress/suits are on and in place, and bring your joy into your day
What has been your most memorable wedding experience in Scotland? What made it special?
I'm going to cheat and give you two! One was on the Isle of Skye, a couple visited from the US and I helped plan their day and took them around certain spots on the Island It was a wonderful experience to be trusted in that way, and Abbie and Beth were delighted with their experience and images.
My other most memorable was a day at Wedderlie House in the Borders, a couple based in London came up and we had the most incredible day Amy was very organised and the day ran really smoothly Her step-dad even had haggis spring rolls (a delicacy he created himself) on the menu for everyone - and they tasted amazing! Will and Amy both brought their full, joyful selves to everything they did that day and it showed up in the images
How do you ensure your work remains unique and personalised for each couple?
It's my view that something can only be personalised if there's a personal relationship. With that in mind I try to meet or get couple's onto a video call, and use a few 'getting to know you' questionnaires throughout the journey to their wedding
It helps to leave the cameras in your bag or by your side when first meeting people and chatting to them, I find it helps put everyone at ease - including me. Skipping past the awkward will always get you to the good stuff. Once relaxed, I find it much easier to get bits of people's personality into an image, or a specific part of the day, like a couple shoot

Earlier this year, I took the Scottish Wedding Hair and Makeup Directory on the road for an unforgettable Bridal Beauty Event at Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel The backdrop of the elegant West End hotel was perfect for the event This was our 2nd Roadshow Event following on from the success of the 1st one in Dumfries in September 2023
It was an idea that came when the Directory first started I noticed that most wedding fayres are quite full on and can be overwhelming I wanted to offer something for Brides that has more of a fun feel to it, more like a girls night out than a boring wedding fayre And something more than just a catwalk, but hair and makeup inspiration too
It was a fab night, offering a range of demonstrations and showcases designed to inspire brides-to-be.
Guests enjoyed a drink on arrival in the stylish lounge area of the Grosvenor Hotel before joining us in the Botanic Suite for an interactive night of beauty and wedding inspiration. The room was set up with a floral backdrop and neons as well as a spin booth.
Every guest received a goody bag with some lovely makeup and skincare samples from Delilah Cosmetics
Photography by Ben Fitzhugh
The evening started with Lesley from Pamper & Polish demonstrating facial yoga, it was a fun interactive session with guests joining in and lots of funny faces Lesleys demonstration was easy to follow, as well as fun and guests didn’t need any tools other than their hands to join in
Heather Robertson Hair demonstrated a stylish wedding hair style on our gorgeous Model Katie, showcasing a half updo that is one of Heathers signature looks. Heather also shared lots of wedding hair tips for Brides.
Ailsa Doc followed with an airbrush demonstration on Katie to show how airbrush makeup works. Ailsa created a beautiful glowing makeup look perfect for any Bride to be looking for that gorgeous glow Ailsa also talked about the advantages of airbrush makeup and why her Brides choose it
The evening finished with a catwalk by Katrin Designs Couture showcasing her beautiful bespoke wedding outfits

As a bridal makeup artist who also offers bespoke manicure services, I understand that every detail matters on your wedding day While hair and makeup often take centre stage, your nails deserve just as much attention I offer a wide range of manicure services, from simple gel manicures to sculpted extensions with intricate nail art, all tailored to suit each bride’s personal style
The timing of your manicure is just as important as the timing of your hair and makeup. Whether you’re growing your natural nails or opting for extensions, I recommend scheduling your final appointment about a week before your wedding day. This ensures your nails are perfectly groomed, avoiding any unwanted growth on your special day
Nail Options for Brides If you’re looking for length, I offer a variety of options For brides with short nails, I use builder gel to help strengthen and grow natural nails over time I also offer sculpted nails and false extensions using hard or builder gels for a flawless, longlasting finish
If a simple gel manicure is more your style, we can schedule your appointment the week before the wedding to ensure your nails are looking fresh and polished. A recent bride of mine chose a beautiful hand-painted chrome rose design on her nails, which was perfect for the romantic feel of her wedding.

Earlier this year I organised a Portfolio Studio Day for members As a Makeup Artist myself, I know how important it is to get professional images for a good portfolio, and often relying on a real wedding isn’t always an option.

Not so much a style, but accessories are going to be big again with bows and pearls taking centre stage.
One standout trend in Wedding Makeup this year will be pops of colour. Bold lips are all about making a statement and expressing individuality on the wedding day. Opt for rich, vibrant shades like reds, plums and shades of orange
This trend allows Brides to break away from traditional nude lip look
Sleek wedding hairstyles offer Brides a modern and polished look that exudes elegance and sophistication This trend embraces simplicity and shine, with smooth, glossy finishes that highlight the bride's natural beauty
This minimalist approach complements a variety of wedding dress styles as brides continue to seek styles that are both fashionable and practical.

Your wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life, and looking your absolute best is a top priority A hair and makeup trial is essential to ensure you achieve the flawless look you desire for your special day Here are some expert tips to help you make the most of your wedding hair and makeup trial:
When preparing for your trial, collect photos of hairstyles and makeup looks that resonate with your vision Avoid heavily filtered images from Pinterest, as they might not accurately depict real-life results Instead, choose inspiration photos with similar hair colour, style, and skin tone as yours. Ideally, select images from your stylist's portfolio to set realistic expectations.
On the day of your trial, wear a white top (or one the same colour as your dress if possible). This will help you visualise how your hair and makeup will complement the color of your wedding dress. Diane Boa suggests avoiding dark tops, as they can alter the perception of your look
Honesty is key during your trial If there's something you're not sure about, speak up! Your hairstylist and makeup artist are there to create a look that makes you feel beautiful Clear communication will help them make any adjustments to perfect your look
Take photos of your hair and makeup from various angles and in different lighting conditions This will give you a complete view of how your look will appear in your wedding photos, ensuring you’re happy with every detail
Schedule your trial strategically, perhaps on a day when you have a dress fitting or another weddingrelated activity. Jack Mungall advises coordinating all your trials, hair, makeup, spray tan, on the same day for consistency. This way, you can see how everything will look together.
If you have specific hair accessories or a veil, bring them to your trial While Natasha Griffin has a spare veil on hand, it's best to have your own accessories to see the complete look
Arrive on time for your trial Ailsa Doc emphasises that punctuality maximises your session Artists often have tight schedules, especially during peak wedding season Being late could limit your trial time, making it difficult to explore different looks
If you or your bridal party plan to wear hair extensions, inform your hairstylist in advance Extensions require additional time, and notifying your stylist beforehand ensures they can accommodate your needs within the allotted time frame
By following these tips, you can ensure that your wedding hair and makeup trial is a success, allowing you to walk down the aisle with confidence and elegance. Remember, your wedding day is all about you, and feeling your best is the ultimate goal.
