I spoke to Kayleigh from Bachilton Barn to find out more about their wedding venue and what they offer for couples looking to get married there. I can personally say that Kayleigh went above and beyond for this shoot and helped with the set up and was so helpful throughout the whole process.

We have super versatile space within the venue which allows for our couples day to flow and be personalised to each one.

What types of wedding packages do you offer, and how are they tailored to meet the needs of different couples?

The main difference in our package is how much accommodation our couples would like to take for their wedding.

Can you walk us through the process from booking the venue to the wedding day? What kind of support can couples expect from your team? Myself and Ellie are here every step of the way to help couples as much or as little as they like On the day we are here to keep an eye on timings, turn arounds, moving décor and just making the day everything the couple want without them having to worry!

Q&A WITH SARAH FROM BELLANUDE

What inspires your designs?

My designs are inspired by a mix of diverse sources, but I’d say Pinterest is one of my biggest inspirations! I scroll through it daily, discovering new ideas and trends. I follow several beautiful couture fashion houses, and I’m always amazed by the attention to detail they put into their work.

They inspire me to push boundaries and experiment with new techniques Another major source of inspiration for me is flicking through fabric books. The bridal fabric selection is huge, and I love seeing a lace or material and dreaming of how it can be transformed into a stunning dress This often leads me to the next step in the process illustration. I spend a lot of time drawing on my iPad, bringing these ideas to life and sketching out beautiful designs. It’s a mix of fabric, technique, and creativity that fuels my passion for bridal design every day.

How do you incorporate current fashion trends into your dresses while maintaining a timeless feel?

Incorporating current fashion trends into my wedding dresses while maintaining a timeless feel is all about striking the right balance. I love staying up to date with the latest trends, whether it’s through fabrics, silhouettes, or embellishments. However, I always ensure that these trends are infused into designs in a way that feels classic and elegant. I love experimenting with small, modern touches like a unique neckline or a detachable feature that can give the dress a contemporary edge without taking away from its timeless beauty.

What is the most unique request you’ve ever received?

One of the most unique requests I’ve received recently was from a bride who wanted to create the veil of her dreams. She envisioned an oversized veil, full of volume and it ended up being the biggest veil I’ve ever made with over 40m of tulle! It was such a fun and exciting challenge to bring her vision to life, and I can’t wait to see her wear it on her wedding day.

The sheer drama and beauty of it will be a showstopper, and it’s moments like this that make designing so rewarding

What types of fabrics and materials do you prefer to use in your designs, and why?

When it comes to the fabrics and materials I use in my designs, Tulle has always been my go-to. Its transparent nature allows me to play with layers, creating beautiful silhouettes and volume, which is especially stunning for bridal designs. The way it moves and catches the light gives it a magical, ethereal quality that I absolutely love

Recently, I’ve found myself drawn to Satin, glitter, and lace as well. Satin’s luxurious finish adds a sophisticated, sleek feel to any design, while the shimmer of glitter brings a touch of sparkle and drama Lace, with its delicate patterns, offers a timeless and romantic element that pairs beautifully with other fabrics

The variety of options available for brides is endless, and I find it exciting to experiment with how different materials can come together to create something truly unique. Each fabric brings its own character and possibilities, and I love exploring the endless ways they can transform a design.

What are the current trends in wedding dress design that brides should be aware of?

Right now, one of the biggest trends in wedding dress design is the “doit-all” dress Brides are looking for a gown that not only makes them feel beautiful but also works for them in multiple ways, especially when making such a special investment. There’s a growing desire for versatility, and the “changing” dress has really taken off

Brides love the idea of having a dress they can modify throughout the day, giving them the option to transform their look from ceremony to reception. It’s all about maximising value while keeping things fresh and exciting In addition to the changing dress, the mini dress has become huge for brides in the evening. Many of my recent brides have opted for a mini dress not just for the reception but throughout the entire day!

It offers a fun, modern vibe and allows them to move freely, especially if they want to dance or celebrate in style Another trend I’ve noticed is brides choosing to make their veil the real showstopper. It adds a beautiful, dramatic effect and can transform the entire look. The variety of stunning designs available right now is amazing, and more and more brides are becoming adventurous, choosing dresses that allow them to express their unique style and personality.

What advice do you have for brides when choosing a dress that suits their body type and personal style?

My advice for brides when choosing a dress that suits their body type and personal style is to stay open-minded and be willing to try on many different styles and silhouettes. It’s easy to get focused on what you think you want or what you envision for yourself, but sometimes the best dress is one you never expected to love I recently got engaged, and I’m lucky enough to be in a position where I can design my own dress

Even so, I still made sure to try on dresses, and I was honestly surprised by what I ended up loving. I thought I knew exactly what would suit me, but the experience of trying on different styles opened my eyes to new possibilities. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone - you might find something that surprises you and makes you feel even more beautiful than you imagined!

How can brides ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their wedding dress throughout the big day?

To ensure you feel comfortable and confident in your wedding dress throughout the big day, it’s important to remember that the beauty of the day isn’t just in how you look but in how you feel Don’t settle for a dress that you don’t truly love or that doesn’t make you feel amazing Make sure your dress is tailored or altered to fit you perfectly this is key. You want your dress to fit comfortably, without worrying about it falling down, being too tight, or restricting your movement when it comes to walking or dancing.

The right undergarments can make all the difference as well. Seamless bodysuits, shaping shorts, or a well-fitted bra can completely transform how your dress sits on your body Be sure to test these undergarments with your dress in advance to make sure everything fits perfectly, so you’re not left feeling uncomfortable on your big day. Comfort is just as important as style, and when you’re comfortable, you’ll radiate confidence!

What’s the most challenging part of designing a wedding dress?

The most challenging part of designing a wedding dress is making sure I’m capturing the customer’s vision exactly as they imagine it in their head. Every bride has a unique idea of what they want, and it can sometimes be hard to translate that vision into a design. That’s why I always recommend creating a mood board at the outset. It’s a great way to visually align with the bride’s style, ensuring we start off on the right track before anything else moves forward.

Another important step I take, especially with bespoke designs, is encouraging brides to try on dresses in a bridal store. Even if they’re going for something completely custom, trying on dresses helps them really understand what they like and don’t like From there, we can pull the best elements from different dresses and combine them into the perfect design to bring their dream dress to life.

What steps do you take to ensure your wedding dresses are produced sustainably and ethically?

All of my dresses are designed by me, and my colleague and I work together in Scotland to bring each dress to life. I make a conscious effort to source all of our fabrics from British businesses, supporting the local economy and reducing the environmental impact of shipping materials internationally.

In addition to sourcing locally, I prioritize sustainable practices throughout the entire design and production process. We focus on high-quality materials that are both beautiful and long-lasting, and I encourage brides to consider timeless designs that they can wear again or pass down By supporting local businesses and being mindful of the materials we use, I can ensure that each dress not only reflects the bride’s vision but also aligns with our values of sustainability and ethical craftsmanship

How important is sustainability in the bridal fashion industry, and how is it evolving?

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the bridal fashion industry, especially considering that many brides only wear their wedding dress for one day This short wear time often leads to a significant amount of waste, which is where the concept of the transformational dress is so exciting.

I love the idea of a mini dress with an overskirt, allowing it to transform into two looks in one perfect for the wedding day and beyond. After the wedding, the mini dress can stand on its own, giving brides a versatile piece they can wear again to events like Ladies’ Day at the races or other special occasions.

There’s also a growing trend of brides choosing to sell their dresses after their big day, and I think that’s such a wonderful idea. By doing this, dresses get a second life and help reduce waste

We, as a society, need to continue normalising the practice of buying and selling pre-loved wedding dresses through platforms like Depop and Vinted It’s a great way to keep the cycle of sustainability going while also supporting other brides who are looking for a beautiful gown at a more affordable price

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the wedding hair and makeup industry?

After leaving my office job due to stress, I worked in fitness and then joined Fake Bake's network marketing parties. I met a makeup artist who taught me the necessary skills to apply makeup well and it enabled me to sell products better, leading to training in hair. Enjoying it, I borrowed money to enrol on the Pro makeup course at The Academy of Makeup (Sara Hill) in Glasgow I then worked with a few other artists to build my portfolio and gain experience while also working on building up my own opportunities and clients. I would say it finally really took off in 2023 and this year we have upwards of 50 + weddings and hundreds of enquiries.

How many years have you been working as a wedding hair and makeup artist?

I have been working as a wedding hair and makeup artist for over ten years. I started in the Bridal industry and have always loved it.

Can you describe the range of services you offer to brides and bridal parties?

I provide a comprehensive array of services designed for brides, bridal parties, individuals, and those seeking to improve their skills. My offerings include hair styling, makeup application, lash extensions, and touch-up services. Additionally, I offer personalized consultations and trial sessions to ensure every bride feels confident and beautiful on her special day For those looking to increase their confidence, I also provide one-on-one lessons

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Inspiration comes from fashion trends, client personalities, bridal looks in magazines and online platforms, and diverse Scottish wedding locations Brides often bring inspiration photos for guidance

Can you walk us through your typical process when working with a bride from the initial consultation to the wedding day?

Once the initial enquiry comes in and I’ve responded with details and pricelists, the bride pays a deposit and the date is set in my diary and I set up a WhatsApp chat. The process follows with a chat consultation where I get to know the bride, her preferences, and the wedding theme. We discuss ideas and set up a trial session to test different looks On the wedding day, I arrive early to ensure everything runs smoothly I recreate the chosen look and can provide touch-ups throughout the day to keep the bride and bridal party looking flawless if it’s something they would like to have.

Do you have any memorable experiences or success stories you’d like to share?

Every wedding is a success story in its own way. A notable experience was a destination wedding in the Scottish Highlands, where despite the unpredictable weather, including a downpour at Glencoe, we created a stunning look that lasted. I often work on elopement weddings and early morning photoshoots across Scotland, sometimes starting at 3am The bride's joy and appreciation make it all worthwhile

What advice do you have for brides who are in the process of choosing their wedding hair and makeup artist?

My advice is to start early and do thorough research Look for artists with extensive experience and positive reviews Schedule consultations to discuss your vision and ensure you feel comfortable with the artist. It's also essential to have a trial session to test different looks and find what works best for you.

Do you have a favourite wedding location in Scotland where you’ve worked?

Borthwick Castle is a notable wedding location in Scotland, known for its historical significance and grandeur. Glencoe is another popular choice due to its impressive landscapes and serene atmosphere, which create a distinctive setting for weddings. Working in these environments can enhance the overall bridal beauty experience but also adds a little bit more to the day.

What do you love most about working in the wedding industry in Scotland?

What I love most about working in the wedding industry in Scotland is the opportunity to be a part of such a significant and joyful event in people's lives. The diverse locations, rich traditions, and warm-hearted people make every wedding unique and memorable It's incredibly fulfilling to help brides feel their best on one of the most important days of their lives

How can brides get in touch with you to learn more about your services or to book a consultation?

Brides can get in touch with me through my website, where they can find detailed information about my services and contact details I am also available via social media and email for inquiries and bookings. I look forward to helping brides achieve their dream wedding look.

One key aspect of achieving that perfect bridal look is hiring a skilled and talented wedding hair and makeup artist We will guide you through the process of finding and booking the ideal wedding hair and makeup artist for your Scottish wedding, including when to start your search.

Your wedding day is a time to shine, and professional wedding hair and makeup artists can help you achieve that flawless and radiant look. Here's why hiring a skilled artist is crucial:

Expertise Professional artists have the experience and training to create a wedding look that complements your style, dress, and theme.

Long-lasting Makeup They use highquality products and techniques that ensure your makeup stays fresh throughout the day and night.

Stress Reduction. Having a makeup artist allows you to relax and enjoy the morning of your wedding without worrying about your look.

Photography. A skilled artist knows how to make you look your best in photographs, enhancing your natural beauty

When to Start Your Search

Once you have your wedding date set, it's time to start your search for a wedding hair and makeup artist. Member Natasha advises to book as far in advance as possible as many Artists will book up a good year to 18 months in advance. Here's a general timeline to follow:

12-18 Months Before Begin your search early, especially if your wedding is during the peak season (typically late spring to early autumn in Scotland) This allows you to secure your preferred artist. Schedule consultations with potential artists. Discuss your vision, share inspiration photos, and review their portfolios. Once you've found the perfect artist, sign a contract and make a deposit to secure their services. Don't forget to discuss any additional services you may need, such as bridal party makeup or hair

3-6 Months Before. Plan and schedule a trial run for your hair and makeup. This will ensure you and your artist are on the same page regarding your desired look.

2-3 Months Before Confirm all the details with your artist, including the wedding day schedule, location, and any changes to your vision

1-2 Months Before. Finalise any last-minute changes or adjustments to your hair and makeup if any. (please note these are just guidelines)

How to Find the Perfect Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist

Now that you know when to start your search, let's explore how to find the ideal wedding hair and makeup artist in Scotland:

Ask for Recommendations. Begin by asking friends, family, or recently married couples for recommendations. Personal referrals can be invaluable

Online Research Bridal hair by Natasha recommends to use online resources like wedding directories such as Scottish Wedding Hair & Makeup Directory, forums, and social media platforms to find local wedding artists. Websites like The Knot, Wedding Wire, and Instagram are great places to start.

Wedding Fairs and Expos Attend wedding fairs and expos in Scotland to meet potential artists in person and see their work up close such as Braehead Wedding Exhibition.

Local Bridal Magazines. Pick up bridal magazines specific to Scotland, as they often feature local wedding vendors and artists such as Tie the Knot and To Have and To Hold.

Check Reviews Look for reviews and testimonials from past clients to gauge the artist's professionalism and skill

Questions to Ask Potential Artists

When you've narrowed down your list of potential wedding hair and makeup artists, it's essential to speak to them to ensure they're the right fit. Here are some questions to ask:

Availability: Confirm that they are available on your wedding date.

Portfolio: Ask to see their portfolio of past bridal work to ensure their style aligns with your vision Bridal hair by Natasha recommends to narrow down a style you like.

Experience: Enquire about their experience and relevant qualifications.

Pricing: Get a detailed quote for their services, including any additional charges for travel or early morning start times.

Reviews: Look for reviews from past Brides who can vouch for their professionalism and skill

Product Used: Discuss the brands of makeup and hair products they use to ensure they are of high quality and suitable for your skin and hair type. Is vegan or having a totally cruelty free kit important to you? If so, look for an Artist that offers this, member Makeup by Sarabel has a totally cruelty free kit

Trial Run and Contract Signing

Before you decide on your chosen artist, schedule a trial run with your preferred wedding hair and makeup artist. During this session, you can:

Test the Look: Ensure the artist can create the look you desire, and make any necessary adjustments. Speak up if you want something changed, an Artist would prefer you were honest with them and tell them at the time of any changes you might want.

Discuss Details: Go over the wedding timeline, location, and any special requests

Sign the Contract: Once you're satisfied, sign the contract and make the required deposit to secure the artist's services on your wedding day. Often you will find an Artist will want a deposit before the trial in order to secure the date.

Final Preparations

As your wedding day approaches, here's a checklist to ensure everything is in order:

Confirm Details: Double-check all the details with your artist, including the schedule, location, and any changes to your desired look.

Don't try any new Products: Don't try any new products in the run up to the wedding and especially not the night before Don't use any face masks you haven't tried beforehand.

Skincare Routine: Follow a skincare and haircare routine leading up to the wedding to ensure your skin and hair are in the best condition. Get into a good routine as early as possible.

Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency beauty kit with essentials like lipstick, blotting paper, hairspray and hairpins for quick touch-ups

Your Wedding Day

On the big day, trust your wedding hair and makeup artist to work their magic Here are some tips to ensure everything goes smoothly:

Arrival Time: Be ready for the artist's arrival, and provide them with a calm and comfortable workspace. Ensure there is suitable space, a table, chairs, plug sockets and good natural lighting.

Make sure your dresses have all been steamed BEFORE hair and makeup, or hire a Dressing Service who will take care of this so you don't have to worry about ruining your hair and makeup They will also help you get into your dress which can be stressful if there are a lot of buttons, so having a professional do this will make getting ready so much easier for you.

Relax and Enjoy: Use this time to relax, have plenty of water and a good filling breakfast, get a music playlist and just enjoy the day. Make sure you have as much as possible sorted (getting the room ready for the photographer, setting the room up etc) the night before Too often Brides have constant interruptions from people coming in and out of the room, asking questions about things that could have been sorted the night before. And if anyone in your bridal party is responsible for sorting things, make sure they are last to get hair and makeup done, as often they can get hot and bothered from running around and it spoils their hair and makeup
