Co-founder of New Ro charity sentenced for stealing $24K Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced today that the co-founder of Christopher’s Voice, Inc., a New Rochelle-based charity for autistic children, was sentenced after pleading guilty to stealing approximately $24,000 from the not-for-profit organization named after his son. DA Rocah said: “After stealing money for more than five years from a charity he founded, this defendant has admitted his wrongdoing. Thanks to the hard work of our Public Integrity and Law Enforcement Integrity Bureau this defendant is being held accountable for his criminal conduct and betrayal of trust. We were able to secure the return of the stolen funds and insured that they will be used to support a reputable organization that helps children

in need.” The defendant, Christopher Greco, 52 of New Rochelle, a 25-year veteran of the New Rochelle Police Department who retired in August 2021, pleaded guilty on Nov. 29 before Judge Eileen Songer McCarthy in New Rochelle City Court to Petit Larceny, a misdemeanor. The defendant was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge. As part of his plea agreement, the defendant paid full restitution to Christopher’s Voice, Inc., and was required to transfer the charity’s remaining funds of $49,750, which includes the restitution, to Elizabeth Seton Children’s Foundation, a Westchester-based nonprofit that provides long-term care for children with severe

medical conditions. The defendant is also required to file for the dissolution of Christopher’s Voice, Inc., with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, and is further prohibited from performing charitable activity and accepting any charitable donations while awaiting final dissolvement of the organization. The defendant admitted in court that he spent money intended for Christopher’s Voice, Inc., on himself and his family for personal purchases made between Jan. 1, 2018 and May 31, 2023 in the form of debit transactions, cash withdrawals and checks written to himself. The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office arrested the defendant on Sept. 21, following its investigation.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer once again taking action to ease the burden on Westchester residents’ wallets this holiday season as Bee-Line Bus fares will be suspended from December 16 until January 1, 2024. The fare suspension will also apply to the County’s ParaTransit system. This is the fourth time – and second consecutive holiday season – that Latimer has taken this action. Latimer said: “In the spirit of the season, we are once again easing the financial strain on Westchester residents. Suspending Bee-Line Bus fares during the holidays is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the lives of those we serve, made possible through responsible fiscal management.” During the Summer 2023 fare free program, average weekday ridership increased by about 22% compared to the weeks before that, while average ridership on weekends was closer to a 40% increase. Commissioner of Public Works and Transportation Hugh Greechan said: “County Executive Latimer’s strategic fiscal management has paved the way for initiatives that directly benefit our community. Suspending Bee-Line Bus fares is not just a seasonal gesture but rather a

testament to our commitment to improving accessibility for our riders.” The Bee-Line is Westchester County’s bus system, with convenient service connecting residents to jobs, recreation, shopping and other regional transportation services. It is the second largest transit bus fleet in New York State, operated by the County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T). Over 65% of all Westchester County residents are within walking distance of a Bee-Line bus route, making the bus both close and convenient. The system has over 3,300 bus stops and almost 60 routes. All BeeLine buses are accessible, and designed with many accessibility features including “kneeling” buses, ramps and lifts. Office for the Disabled Director Evan Latainer said: “This action greatly improves the lives of the residents our office is tasked with serving and we extend our sincere appreciation to County Executive Latimer for once again prioritizing the needs of our community. The temporary fare suspension significantly benefits those we serve, making transportation more inclusive and contributing to a joyous holiday season for all Westchester residents.”

Israel-themed ‘Dreidel House’ to open amid war As we approach the Jewish festival of Chanukah, Chabad of Larchmont & Mamaroneck invites families from across Westchester County and beyond to the 2023 edition of “Chanukah Wonderland at The Dreidel House” which will be open to the public over the course of Chanukah and is set to be a hub of joy, fun and excitement. With Israel on everyone’s minds — following the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel — this year’s Dreidel House returns with additional Israel themed activities for children of all ages. The ‘Israel Edition’ will feature a giant Kotel where families can write letters and pack gifts for Soldiers in the IDF. These are in addition to the holiday favorites like candle making, a giant dreidel bounce house as well as a VR experience where participants can experience what it was like to be in the ancient temple in Jerusalem. “In these times, it is important to find joy and pride in our heritage and

traditions,” said Rabbi Mendel Silberstein, director of Chabad of Larchmont and Mamaroneck. “The Dreidel House is not just about celebrating Chanukah, it is about transmitting that joy and pride to the next generation of Jews, in a space where fun and community comes together.” The post-Oct. 7 Jewish communal response has bucked all precedents: Jews have chosen to celebrate their identity this Hanukkah with more confidence and resolve. This year has seen a surge in public displays of Jewishness, with many more individuals planning to proudly light their menorahs in their windows. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, launched the Chanukah awareness campaign in 1973, and in the half-century since, the “Festival of Light” has entered the public sphere. Chanukah has since won a place not only in Jewish life, but also in the life of the American people.

The White Plains Performing Arts Center has revealed the cast for their Mainstage production of “ANASTASIA,” playing Dec. 15-Jan. 7, which marks the shows first professional regional production. From the Tony Award winning creators of the Broadway classic “Ragtime,” comes this dazzling musical based on the beloved 1997 animated movie. From the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat to find out if she is indeed Princess Anastasia. Including classic songs from the motion picture like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” this

show is perfect for the whole family this holiday season. Leading the cast are Katherine Lindsley as Anya, Coleman Cummings as Dmitry, Drew Becker as Gleb, Patricia M. Lawrence as the Dowager Empress, Caroline Huerta as Countess Lily and Broadway Veteran John Treacy Egan as Vlad. The show is filled with

mystery, discovery, love, and loss - the elements of a perfect show for the holiday season. The musical gives everybody who grew up with the movie what they need now— finding yourself, romance, and taking your place in the world. It’s truly the perfect show for the entire family.” says the WPPAC team. ANASTASIA is Directed by Frank Portanova with Music Direction by Stephen Ferri and choreography by Josh Assor. WCA releases 2023 data on youth disparities

The Westchester Children’s Association released a new data bulletin shedding light on the unequal socioeconomic, health and educational outcomes faced by the county’s children and youth.

The Westchester Children’s Association (WCA) is proud to announce the release of a new data bulletin, “Children By The Numbers,” shedding light on the unequal socioeconomic, health, and educational outcomes faced by the county’s children and youth. This bulletin aims to be an instrumental tool for policymakers, educators, parents, and advocates working to develop equitable programs and policies to support all children, regardless of their race or ethnic backgrounds.

Insightful Findings:

WCA’s bulletin highlights compelling patterns and factors impacting children and youth currently, with projections for the future. The focus is on the significant racial disparities evident in the indicators, emphasizing the growing number of children and youth of color in Westchester. These findings underscore the urgency for systemic change to address race inequity and improve outcomes for all children in the county. The topics covered include: Income & Household Types, Child Abuse & Foster Care, Economic Insecurity, Families & the Cost of Living, How Families Make Ends Meet, Mental Health, Digital & Health Inequity, Education, and Disconnected Youth & Youth Engagement.

Local and Current Data:

The bulletin draws extensively from data provided by local community partners, offering the most recent and reliable frontline

information on the status of children and families in Westchester. This local data is pivotal in understanding the real-time situation and in advocating for effective interventions and policy changes to uplift the well-being and opportunities of all children and youth in the area. “WCA’s advocacy priorities are based on data, but we struggle to get timely, transparent data out of government systems. This can mean children and families don’t receive the support they need when they need it. Our 2023 data bulletin has addressed this by reaching out to community partners on the frontline for indicators that show a more nuanced and contemporary picture of children’s needs. We are then able to demonstrate the urgent need for legislation and policies to lift families out of poverty,” states Allison Lake, Executive Director of WCA.

ing the racial inequities highlighted in the bulletin, we can ensure a better future for all children in Westchester. WCA continues to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to inform, influence, and ignite change, with the hope that every child and youth will have equal access to opportunities, regardless of their background. About Westchester Children’s Association Westchester Children’s Association (WCA) is a multi-issue, child advocacy non-

profit that works to ensure that every child in Westchester is healthy, safe, and prepared for life’s challenges, regardless of race or zip code. Since 1914, WCA has been the leading independent voice for Westchester’s children by identifying their needs, making those needs known to the public, and ensuring those needs are met through advocacy and mobilization efforts. For more information about Westchester Children’s Association, visit their website at www.wca4kids.org.

Advocating for Change:

In light of the insights from the bulletin, WCA is calling for comprehensive efforts to tackle systemic imbalances, dismantle barriers, and create inclusive environments. Advocating for equitable programs and policies is crucial in fostering environments where every child and youth can thrive, and WCA is committed to being at the forefront of these advocacy efforts.

Vision for the Future:

The association believes that by address-

A farewell to fall Well, it took a while, but the fall season is finally behind us and it’s time to (finally) turn our attention to the winter months. Now, I’m not complaining; a long fall season means we have plenty of deep playoff runs from our local teams, and this year was no exception. On Sunday in Syracuse, the Rye football team added the capper on that front, winning the Class B state football title with a win over Maine-Endwell, but that wasn’t the only glimpse of greatness we saw. Earlier in November, another group of Garnets—this time the Rye girls soccer team— hoisted their own state title with a dominant run in Cortland. Similarly, Mamaroneck’s field hockey team got back to the top of the hill with an undefeated season and Eastchester’s girls swim team won the program’s first ever state crown thanks in part to their blistering relay teams. But now, it’s time to look ahead to what’s

in store. The roll-out of the winter season is always an odd one. Unlike in the fall, when teams generally start competing within a day or two of each other, starts are staggered over the course of the November and December, owing mostly to schedules drawn up by coaching staffs and potential appearances in holiday tournaments. For instance, the first winter game I covered happened all the way back on Nov. 22— before Thanksgiving—when I caught the Rye Town/Harrison hockey team in action against Cortlandt at the annual Guy Matthews Tournament. But there are other teams in our coverage area, like the Rye boys basketball team, which wisely adjusted their schedule to wisely account for a potential football run that would keep a handful of key contributors out until mid-December. So even with that decentralized, disconnected start to the beginning of the year, it doesn’t mean there aren’t key games to watch out for in December. I, for one, have my eyes set on Dec. 15 showdown between Pelham and Rye’s hock-

ey teams, a rematch of last year’s Division II section championship game and another iteration of one of the best rivalries in the area. That same day, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck reignite their feud as both teams look finish out the calendar year on a positive note. And by the time we get to January; forget

about it. League games, playoffs, the semifinals at County Center? We’ve got more than enough to be excited about. So bring on the winter season; it will be spring soon enough, so let’s enjoy it! Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Chances like this don’t come around every do, but when one arose for the Rye football team, the Garnets were able to make the most of that opportunity. On Dec. 3, Rye put the finishing touches on a historic season, authoring a decisive 28-7 victory over Maine-Endwell to claim the New York State Class B Championship. The title—the fourth program history—is the school’s first since 2008, but something this group had been envisioning for years. “We’ve been talking about this since we were kids,” said Garnet quarterback A.J. Miller. “And to be able to do it, with this group, is such an amazing feeling.”

Rye’s performance at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse was a dominant one, as the Garnets put together a stellar second half that saw them stifle the offense of the reigning state champs while padding an eight-point halftime lead on a 77-yard pass from Miller to Tucker Hess and a rushing touchdown from Chris Iuliano—his third of the game. Miller credited Hess, who broke that long scoring play on the opening drive of the half, with setting the tone for what amounted to Rye’s victory lap. “Speed kills, and Tucker can fly,” Miller said. “I got it out to him and he just did the rest and that got us off on the right foot.” Rye’s defense, stingy all year, was particularly impressive against a Spartans team that came into Sunday’s tilt averaging 30 points a game in the state tournament. The Garnets forced four turnovers and held the explosive Spartans to just over 200 total yards on the day. “We knew coming in that they could score points and we had to be at our best,” said defensive back Ameer White. “We were at our best, we did what we needed to do, and this feeling right now is everything.” But even if Rye was con-

fident in their ability to challenge for a state title from the outset of the season, things looked somewhat bleak for the Garnets early in the year. After four games, the Garnets—battling injuries to key players—found themselves at 2-2 and in need of quick turnaround to keep those title hopes alive. But as players began to return to the lineup, the Garnets play improved

dramatically, as Rye won 10 straight games to claim the state title. They got one more piece of the puzzle back on Sunday, as senior captain Shep Griffiths—who had been sidelined for most of the year—returned to action, providing an emotional lift for the Garnets. “Initially, I thought I was out for the season, but as we kept winning, that

thought shifted,” said Griffiths. “I figured I had to do whatever I could to suit up and contribute.” “He’s been at every practice, every game, working hard and making everyone better, even while he was hurt,” said Miller. “And to get him back for this game was huge.” Now, with a fitting end to their high school football careers in the books, Miller

said he has been grateful for the time he and his teammates have spent together in pursuit of a dream that ultimately came true. ““This means everything, Rye’s a storied program but we haven’t been able to do this in so long,” said Miller. “But now we are back on top where we belong.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
