Ex-Mamaroneck library employee charged with grand larceny This past February, the Mamaroneck Public Library Board of Trustees became aware of financial irregularities within the library’s business office. In response, swift action was taken: A comprehensive financial forensic audit was initiated, focusing on potential misappropriation and the examination of all library accounts. The outcomes prompted the Westchester County District Attorney to launch an independent investigation. The district attorney has concluded their investigation and arrested former employee Mary Soto. She has been charged with grand larceny in the third degree for the theft of $44,769 from 2016-2023. We

are hopeful that the judicial process will bring accountability and a satisfactory resolution for Mamaroneck’s taxpayers. We understand the community has questions and concerns about these events. We appreciate your patience and assure you that we are diligently working to furnish complete and accurate answers. Open communication is vital, and we pledge to keep you informed of any additional developments. The Library Board acknowledges the continuing potential for difficult financial decisions in the future. Nevertheless, the Mamaroneck Public Library stands unwavering in its century-long commitment

to serving the community. We understand the importance of maintaining the public’s trust and will continue to work closely with the Village, the public, and relevant agencies to safeguard the integrity of our beloved Library. “The library appreciates the ongoing support of our community and remains confident that, together, we will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger than ever,” said Director Jennifer O’Neill. “We are grateful to Renee Hassel, Westchester County Assistant District Attorney of the Public and Law Enforcement Integrity Bureau, and her team, for their commitment and professionalism in this matter.”

dent scene and continued north on the parkway. The driver of the other vehicle called County Police and provided a description of the fleeing vehicle. Nerney and Duffy positioned their patrol car at Grant Street in Pleasantville to observe passing traffic and soon spotted the Chevy Malibu. They attempted a traffic stop near Route 120 in New Castle but the driver accelerated in an attempt to elude them. The driver lost control of the vehicle about a mile south of Readers Digest Road, colliding with another car before rolling his over and going off the road. After he was rescued from the burning car, the suspect was transported by Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Westchester Medical Center. Nerney was also taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and cuts to his hands. A 33-year-old woman and 7-yearold child, occupants of the vehicle struck by the suspect, were also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and were released. During a subsequent search of the suspect’s vehicle, a loaded handgun was found in the car. The 51-year-old driver of the fleeing vehicle was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Contempt 2nd Degree, Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving. He was also issued summonses for speeding and leaving the scene of the initial accident in Hawthorne. The criminal contempt charge was lodged because he is barred from possessing a firearm as a result of a pre-existing Order of Protection.

Two Westchester County Police officers will be nominated for a lifesaving award for pulling a fleeing suspect out of a burning car after he crashed the Saw Mill River Parkway. The driver had fled from an attempted traffic stop at a high rate of speed before losing control on wet pavement, going off the road and rolling the vehicle on to its side on the northbound Saw Mill in Chappaqua. He was flung into the back seat and was initially unconscious when his car burst into flames. Police Officers Niall Nerney and Christopher Duffy used a portable fire extinguisher to slow the raging fire and then broke through the damaged windshield to climb inside the vehicle. The officers rendered first aid to help the injured man regain consciousness and then pulled him out of the vehicle as the flames spread into the passenger compartment. Commissioner Terrance Raynor of the Department of Public Safety commended the officers for their actions. “This suspect fled at high speed on a rainy night, putting himself, other motorists and these officers in jeopardy. Regardless of this man’s reckless behavior, Officers Nerney and Duffy did not hesitate to put themselves in harm’s way to save him as the flames spread. I commend them for the decisive, skillful and courageous actions they took when every second mattered.” The incident began on Friday, Dec. 1, about 9:30 p.m., when a Chevy Malibu traveling northbound on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Hawthorne sideswiped another car. The Malibu did not stop at the acci-

Gov launches 2024 New York State Parks Centennial Challenge

Graphic Designer | Design2pro

Set to begin on Jan. 1, 2024, the New York State Parks Centennial Challenge includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday a year-long celebratory challenge that all New York State residents and visitors can participate in to explore our state parks, learn about New York history, and give back to New York State Parks for the next generation of adventurers. Set to begin on Jan. 1, 2024, the New York State Parks Centennial Challenge includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites. Participants will need to complete 24 missions throughout 2024 to complete the challenge. “There is so much to do within our vast state park system, and the Centennial Challenge is a great way to introduce New Yorkers and visitors, alike, to our historic and awe-inspiring properties for 2024’s 100th anniversary celebration,”Governor Hochul said. “Our park system is an incredible place to visit year-round, and the Centennial Challenge is a great activity for all who are resolving to have a fun and adventurous New Year.” The Centennial Challenge is part of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of New York’s statewide park and historic site system. The celebration will both highlight and build upon one of New York State’s greatest environmental legacies. In 1924, Governor Alfred E. Smith and the State Legislature created the New York State Council of Parks while voters approved a $15 million Bond Act to build and enlarge a network of state parks, forging the New York State park and historic site system that New York State residents and visitors know and cherish today.

New York State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “The Centennial Challenge is a wonderful opportunity to experience the unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation, culture and education that are available in the New York State Park system. You may already have a favorite park or a favorite activity, but there is more for everyone to see and do—be it locally or around the state. I encourage residents and visitors alike to take up the Challenge to discover new and exciting ways to enjoy these amazing places.” The Challenge is designed to be completed by people of all abilities and can be finished by visiting parks and historic sites across the state or keeping with one that’s close to home.

Some example Centennial Challenge “missions” include:

• Go camping at one of more than 8,500 campsites • Visit a “new-to-you” state park or historic site and bring a picnic • Pack your skates and go skating at one of state parks’ ice rinks • Talk to an interpreter about the history of a state historic site • Join a volunteer event • Learn the Leave No Trace principles and apply them during your next visit Participants will need to complete 24 missions (earn 24 points) throughout 2024 in order to complete the challenge. Those who complete it

will earn a commemorative Centennial sticker, and, in turn, be entered into a promotional giveaway where 24 lucky participants will win a threeyear Empire Pass and Centennial merchandise. For every 10 additional points, participants will receive one additional entry into the promotional giveaway. The promotional drawing will take place the week of January 13, 2025. Submissions (both mailed in and submitted via the Goosechase app) will be accepted through January 10, 2025.

How It Works

Participants can get involved by downloading an app on their phone or completing a paper form. Goosechase app • Participants can take the challenge on the go by downloading the Goosechase app on their phone from the iPhone or Android app store • Search for “NY State Parks Centennial Challenge” to join • Once they’ve joined, participants can collect points by completing missions right in the app by either taking and uploading photos or videos or submitting an answer to a question Checklist • A paper checklist can be downloaded on our Centennial Challenge website and printed at home or can be picked up at your local state park or historic site • Collect points by checking missions off the list and mailing the checklist in once participants have earned 24 points

Saint Pio donates 300 pizzas, snacks for holidays The Saint Pio Foundation, a Tuckahoe-based not for profit organization donated 300 Italian freshly baked pizzas, taralli snacks and mini panettone on Wednesday to nourish those in need, and to help them feel the warmth of abundance during Christmas holidays. The donation is part of the annual tradition which the Foundation established around the country, and this year, it became part of the national initiative “Pizza for a Smile,” which aims at providing more than food: it is

a way to forge community spirit and generate smiles, enabling the disadvantaged families to receive nourishing food in a family-like spirit of care and support. To put it in Sebastian’s own words, the inspiration and ambassador of this initiative: “When I encounter pizza, I always smile. There is always a story, and that is that pizza always makes you smile. We want to make people happy and receive a smile in exchange!” “By sharing three hundred pizzas, and

other gifts like the taralli snacks and mini panettone, the Saint Pio Foundation intends to change the way we bring nourishment to those in need,” said Founder and CEO Luciano Lamonarca. “We strive to feed not only the body but also the soul of those who are hungry. A pizza provides both nourishment and comfort, and we could not be prouder to borrow from our Italian culture and cuisine to help those that face significant hardships and spiritual challenges.” If you wish to learn more about the

initiative “Pizza for a Smile”, or would like to pledge a donation, more information can be found at https://pizzaforasmile.org/ The Saint Pio Foundation (The People of Hope) is a non-profit, charitable organization that promotes the knowledge of and devotion to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. It works with institutions and individuals that share the same vision to serve those in need of relief of suffering and that seek to alleviate the physical and emotional hunger of the underserved in a dignified and supportive manner.

The Saint Pio Foundation donated 300 Italian pizzas, taralli snacks and mini panettone to nourish those in need, and to help them feel the warmth of abundance during Christmas holidays.

Hochul signs Lead Pipe Right to Know Act Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation Wednesday known as the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act to protect New Yorkers from the extraordinary public health risk posed by lead pipes. The legislation requires making information easily accessible to the public about the number and location of lead pipes so that state and federal resources can be secured and efficiently targeted to support local efforts to remove all lead pipes impacting New York’s drinking water. “Lead poisoning poses a clear and present danger to the health and well-being of all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “This nation-leading legislation will protect New Yorkers from lead pipes, which are proven to cause extraordinary harm. I am committed to doing everything in my power to protect the health and well-being of New Yorkers. The legislation requires water utilities across the state to publicly share how many lead service lines are present in their distribution system

and where those lines are located so that individuals and policymakers can understand the full scale and extent of the lead service line issue. State Sen. Gustavo Rivera said, “I am grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for signing my Lead Pipe Right to Know Act into law, and cementing New York’s position as a leader in enacting progressive climate change legislation. This law will take stock of our state’s water pipeline infrastructure and ensure access to clean water to New Yorkers across the State. We must combat environmental injustice and with this law, we will keep our communities healthy and safe.” Assemblymember Amy Paulin said, “Lead poisoning is an urgent public health issue, and it disproportionately affects children in low-income and marginalized families. The Lead Pipes Right to Know Act will help make childhood lead exposure a thing of the past. I thank Governor Hochul for taking this step to protect New York’s children.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation on Dec. 20 known as the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act to protect New Yorkers from the extraordinary public health risk posed by lead pipes.

Hoping for glad tidings

With Christmas just around the corner, local sports fans are hoping for something other than coal.

It’s Christmas-time again, which means the more materialistic of among us are thinking about our “reason for the season”—namely presents. But if you’ve been a New York sports fan over this last stretch, it doesn’t look like we’re going to have a whole lot underneath the tree this year. Sure, Yankee fans got something of an early holiday gift last week when the team announced it had traded for young phenom Juan Soto. But that move was soon eclipsed by

the massive—and uniquely structured—deal that sent Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers giving Yankee fans a bit of FOMO while they wonder if they’ll be able to lock Soto up long term or if this is just a one-year rental. But aside from that, it’s been slim-pickings for area fans. Tommy DeVito gave Giants fans a brief glimmer of hope, but that’s looking increasingly like a cruel trick played by a sports Grinch. As for Jets fans, I imagine every day is one where you wake up to find coal in your stockings in some Groundhog Day-esque loop. Sure the Knicks are passable enough, but they’re not fooling anyone into thinking they’re a title contender. So where does

that leave us? Only with hockey, the most wintry of the winter sports. And on that front, the Rangers sure look every bit the true contender. Boasting one of the best records in the NHL—despite injuries to key players—they’ve piqued interest around the league, but haven’t yet been able to shake the nagging doubts of the Blue Shirt faithful. Is it because their all-world net minder has been underperforming? Sure. But it’s also because we have endured decades of futility and have come to expect nothing less than disappointment. So while I might hope for the Rangers to provide a bit of Christmas cheer, is it something I’m necessarily counting on it? Not exactly.

So what can we hope for? Honestly, the little things. The Mets maybe making a splash by coming away with Yoshi Yamamoto to keep the arms race with the Yankees somewhat competitive, the Knicks continuing to grind out wins en route to becoming a frisky No. 5 seed. Heck, even just the Giants beating the reeling Eagles on Christmas afternoon. That alone would be enough for me the way that things have been going. So no, I don’t have much hope for glad tidings this Christmas; let’s hope that once January hits, we’ll be looking to a brighter 2024. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Rye downs Wildcats in OT By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Boys Basketball

Game Notes • Jake Kessner sent the game into OT at the buzzer • Carson Miller had 12 points • Rye is 2-0

While the Rye football team’s march to a state title might have caused a bit of delay to the start of the basketball season, the Garnets have wasted little time hitting the ground running. On Dec. 15—in just their second game of the winter campaign—Rye found its footing and authored an impressive win over crosstown rival Rye Country Day, topping the Wildcats 47-38 in overtime. The Garnets shook off a slow start to climb back

into contention in the first half but needed some lategame heroics to pull off the victory against RCDS. They got just that when, with just one second left in regulation, junior phenom Jake Kessner drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc to send the game into overtime. Kessner finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Carson Miller led the Garnets with 12. Max Garcia-Tunon scored a game-high 14 points for the Wildcats. Head coach John Aguilar said he had no qualms about drawing up the decisive play for the forward, as he had extreme confidence in the standout despite his early struggles from the field. “He had some trouble early on, but we always feel confident when the ball is in his hands,” said Aguilar. “And he came through and hit a big shot for us.” Once overtime started, the momentum generated by the big shot was enough to pull the Garnets across

the finish line, as their aggressive defense confounded the Wildcats, something they were able to do for stretches during the game. Kessner credited the Garnets—eight of whom

are getting their first taste of varsity competition this year—with showing mental toughness down the stretch, and said that one of the team’s greatest strengths is its willingness to compete. “Every single guy is a competitor; we scrimmage every day in practice and every day it’s a battle.” Said Kessner. “That’s only going to help us.” The Garnets will play three more times before the beginning of the new year, as they will close out December with tilts against Yonkers, Hendrick Hudson and a yet-to-be determined opponent on Dec. 28. The will be back in action on Jan. 3 when they take on league foe Eastchester. “There are obviously some things we need to work on, we still need to settle in,” said Aguilar. “But once we get find a little more consistency on both sides of the ball, I think that should help us.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
