Picture House announces new season of TPH Film Club The Picture House Regional Film Center announced today a new season of TPH Film Club Bronxville, Sundays at the Cinema, which will begin on Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. The six-film remake series is inspired by the January release of the new musical version of MEAN GIRLS, which will be showing at The Picture House. Following each screening, the audience will enjoy behind the scenes insight through lively Q&A discussion often with guest experts and insiders from the film industry. TPH has also partnered with veteran film critic Joe Neumaier in developing this series as well as two additional theme series scheduled for later in 2024. Neumaier will host Sundays at the Cinema. “Get ready for an exhilarating new program on Sundays in Bronxville with some cool surprises along the way,” said Clayton Bushong, Executive Director of The Picture House. “TPH Film Club is at the heart of our organization’s mission, and we are thrilled to present a fresh perspective on our perennially popular

program. We are honored to collaborate with Joe whose experience and insightful contributions will undoubtedly elevate the series. With a remarkable career interviewing the best and brightest in the business, his stories are truly incredible!” Joe Neumaier, on-air film critic for New York’s 710AM-WOR, has been an entertainment journalist, movie critic, onstage moderator, and radio/TV commentator for over 30 years. His writing on cinema and culture has appeared in The New York Times, Variety, Time, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Daily News, The New York Post, USA Today, Hamptons and The London Observer, and his broadcast appearances include MSNBC, CNN, “CBS Sunday Morning,” and KTLA - Los Angeles. He is a former longtime member of the New York Film Critics Circle and a current member of the Critics Choice Association. Some of his ‘A’ list interviews in the film industry include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Bill Murray, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel

Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Greta Gerwig. “Partnering with The Picture House Theater is a dream come true,” commented Joe Neumaier. “Across several decades of writing about film, moderating onstage events with actors and filmmakers, and being part of the radio landscape in New York, I’ve always loved connecting with moviegoers and being a conduit between artists and audiences. Taking a deeper look at favorite genres and discussing them with the Picture House community will surely create memorable moments and fun, lively talkbacks. I’m looking forward to being a part of this new adventure.” To subscribe to Film Club, you must be a current member of The Picture House. Winter Film Club Bronxville dates: Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25, March 3 and March 10. Westchester County has received a check from NuEnergen, LLC., in the amount of $361,529.73 for the county’s enrollment in three summer Demand Response programs – bringing the total money earned by the county through this program to $1.5 million. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “This program is a win-win for Westchester residents. It provides revenue through creative solutions to help generate found income while also reducing the County’s reliance on traditional energy solutions – which is good for our region in the long term. This is just one example of the inventive fixes my Administration has initiated to help us move Westchester forward – by not only working to save our planet but also by finding revenue streams to relieve the burden on taxpayers that did not exist prior to my taking office.” Westchester County works with NuEnergen, LLC. to provide the County with a Demand Response program that both earn the County income as well as provide an opportunity to further enhance its sustainability efforts. Demand response is an electricity grid and utility-run series of programs that offer financial incentives to owners of facilities, in this case, the County, that reduce the need for kilowatts during times of high stress on the region’s electric grid. It also eliminates or minimizes the need to build expensive infrastructure or fire up dormant dirty fossil fuel burning “peaker plants.” In the program, the County remains on ‘stand-by’ to lower energy usage during times of great stress – like days with sweltering heat. On these “high-stress” days, the County is alerted of a “demand response” event beginning and reduces energy usage at some of its facilities – i.e.

power down the building and take them off the electric grid. Only a few short hours later, the event would end, and normal operations would resume. The more kW load – or the number of buildings - that are enrolled in the program, the higher the earning for the County is. Similar programs have already proved to be successful with the City of New York, the NY/NJ Port Authority, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Latimer added: “We owe a debt of gratitude to Peter McCartt, who brought the idea of Demand Response to the County; It is one more example of the creativity of individuals who work within the County and when given encouragement and support, help us achieve greatly.” Westchester County Director of Energy Conservation and Sustainability Peter McCartt said: “It is on us in Government to find ways to enhance our sustainability efforts for the good of, not just our County, but the region and planet. This is just one of the many ideas we have initiated, and the opportunity for increased revenue makes entering into a ‘demand response’ program a no-brainer.” The contract with NuEnergen was approved by the County’s Board of Acquisition and Contract and commenced on Sept. 1, 2018, and was renewed on Sept. 1, 2023. NuEnergen President & CEO Kevin Hamilton said: “The County of Westchester has been forward leaning and proactive through its Demand Response Program participation initiative - much to the benefit of county taxpayers and the region. NuEnergen is pleased to serve the county in this respect. Moreover, working with George Latimer and his team has been terrific. Congratulations to the County of Westchester for its leadership and dedication to environmental/ energy conservation.”

Hochul signs Lead Pipe Right to Know Act Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation Wednesday known as the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act to protect New Yorkers from the extraordinary public health risk posed by lead pipes. The legislation requires making information easily accessible to the public about the number and location of lead pipes so that state and federal resources can be secured and efficiently targeted to support local efforts to remove all lead pipes impacting New York’s drinking water. “Lead poisoning poses a clear and present danger to the health and well-being of all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “This nation-leading legislation will protect New Yorkers from lead pipes, which are proven to cause extraordinary harm. I am committed to doing everything in my power to protect the health and well-being of New Yorkers. The legislation requires water utilities across the state to publicly share how many lead service lines are present in their distribution system and where

those lines are located so that individuals and policymakers can understand the full scale and extent of the lead service line issue. State Sen. Gustavo Rivera said, “I am grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for signing my Lead Pipe Right to Know Act into law, and cementing New York’s position as a leader in enacting progressive climate change legislation. This law will take stock of our state’s water pipeline infrastructure and ensure access to clean water to New Yorkers across the State. We must combat environmental injustice and with this law, we will keep our communities healthy and safe.” Assemblymember Amy Paulin said, “Lead poisoning is an urgent public health issue, and it disproportionately affects children in low-income and marginalized families. The Lead Pipes Right to Know Act will help make childhood lead exposure a thing of the past. I thank Governor Hochul for taking this step to protect New York’s children.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation on Dec. 20 known as the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act to protect New Yorkers from the extraordinary public health risk posed by lead pipes.

Gov launches 2024 New York State Parks Centennial Challenge

Graphic Designer | Design2pro

Set to begin on Jan. 1, 2024, the New York State Parks Centennial Challenge includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday a year-long celebratory challenge that all New York State residents and visitors can participate in to explore our state parks, learn about New York history, and give back to New York State Parks for the next generation of adventurers. Set to begin on Jan. 1, 2024, the New York State Parks Centennial Challenge includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites. Participants will need to complete 24 missions throughout 2024 to complete the challenge. “There is so much to do within our vast state park system, and the Centennial Challenge is a great way to introduce New Yorkers and visitors, alike, to our historic and awe-inspiring properties for 2024’s 100th anniversary celebration,”Governor Hochul said. “Our park system is an incredible place to visit year-round, and the Centennial Challenge is a great activity for all who are resolving to have a fun and adventurous New Year.” The Centennial Challenge is part of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of New York’s statewide park and historic site system. The celebration will both highlight and build upon one of New York State’s greatest environmental legacies. In 1924, Governor Alfred E. Smith and the State Legislature created the New York State Council of Parks while voters approved a $15 million Bond Act to build and enlarge a network of state parks, forging the New York State park and historic site system that New York State residents and visitors know and cherish today. New York State Parks Commissioner Erik

Kulleseid said, “The Centennial Challenge is a wonderful opportunity to experience the unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation, culture and education that are available in the New York State Park system. You may already have a favorite park or a favorite activity, but there is more for everyone to see and do—be it locally or around the state. I encourage residents and visitors alike to take up the Challenge to discover new and exciting ways to enjoy these amazing places.” The Challenge is designed to be completed by people of all abilities and can be finished by visiting parks and historic sites across the state or keeping with one that’s close to home.

Some example Centennial Challenge “missions” include:

• Go camping at one of more than 8,500 campsites • Visit a “new-to-you” state park or historic site and bring a picnic • Pack your skates and go skating at one of state parks’ ice rinks • Talk to an interpreter about the history of a state historic site • Join a volunteer event • Learn the Leave No Trace principles and apply them during your next visit Participants will need to complete 24 missions (earn 24 points) throughout 2024 in order to complete the challenge. Those who complete it will earn a commemorative Centennial sticker, and, in turn, be entered into a promotional giveaway where 24 lucky participants will win a three-

year Empire Pass and Centennial merchandise. For every 10 additional points, participants will receive one additional entry into the promotional giveaway. The promotional drawing will take place the week of January 13, 2025. Submissions (both mailed in and submitted via the Goosechase app) will be accepted through January 10, 2025.

How It Works

Participants can get involved by downloading an app on their phone or completing a paper form.

Goosechase app

• Participants can take the challenge on the go by downloading the Goosechase app on their phone from the iPhone or Android app store • Search for “NY State Parks Centennial Challenge” to join • Once they’ve joined, participants can collect points by completing missions right in the app by either taking and uploading photos or videos or submitting an answer to a question

Checklist

• A paper checklist can be downloaded on our Centennial Challenge website and printed at home or can be picked up at your local state park or historic site • Collect points by checking missions off the list and mailing the checklist in once participants have earned 24 points

And a Happy New Year! It may surprise you—unless you’ve read this column before—that I’ve never been a huge fan of college football. Aside from a few dalliances with Notre Dame over the years, mostly during the Ty Willingham and Charlie Weis-eras, I’ve never felt beholden to a particular team, and I think that’s always put me at a distance from the rabid football fans who eat, sleep and breathe the colors of their favorite institution of higher learning. So without a dog in this fight, I have to say, what’s going on with the College Football National Championship is enough to bring out even the most casual of fans. And maybe that’s how the powers-that-be drew it up? First of all, I feel terrible for Florida State, the team left out of the four-team playoff

system despite enjoying an undefeated season and winning the ACC Championship. I understand how tough it must be for those players to pour their hearts into a perfect season, only to have a shot at a national title—no matter how far fetched it might be—be taken away by bean-counters in a board room. But in terms of making college football a national story, what more can you ask for? I get that college football brings in huge numbers. For certain swathes of the country, this may well be the national pastime. But does this final four controversy help the brand in the short term? You bet it does. Pundits and outlets who don’t normally spend time on collegiate athletics have been breaking down the decision almost non-stop for weeks. Politicians have weight in, latenight hosts have addressed the snub in their monologues. Don’t you think that’s going to translate to more than a few more eyeballs on the semifinals when the Rose and Sugar

On Jan. 1, the top four teams in college football will be in action. Florida State, however finds itself on the outside looking in.

Bowls are played on Jan. 1? The College Football Playoffs will expand to eight teams next year, but the idea of any sort of tournament decided by pollsters will inevitably lead to situations like these. Next year, instead of the fifth-place team finding themselves on the outside looking in, it will be teams No. 9 or 10. The same arguments will be made for expansion and, spoiler alert, those arguments will eventually win out. As I noted, this is big business and playoff

branding is a seller. And with a captive audience, these executives will find every way possible to maximize a profit, so expect these controversies to continue to be manufactured as colleges chase the almighty buck. It’s a shame for those Seminole fans that they were the fall guys this year. But trust me, they won’t be the last. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

There may be plenty of season left, but the New Rochelle boys basketball team really couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2023-2024 campaign. On Dec. 22, the Huguenots continued their perfect play, outlasting a solid Arlington team 63-49 to win their sixth straight game of the year. The Huguenot win was led by another terrific outing from Malik Gasper, who scored 18 points and hauled in 20 rebounds to boot. Kas Mirza had a team-high 21 points for New Rochelle, while Sean Thomas scored 10 points while dishing out five

assists. Jensey Adames paced the Admirals—who fell to 2-3 with the loss— with 16 points. Huguenots head coach Rasaun Young has been pleased with his team’s play thus far, noting that a few new arrivals, plus the continued development of some returning like Gasper, have paid dividends for the squad. “We we knew all the core guys were coming back,” said Young. “And getting Sean back, I think we got that extra big guard that we had needed, and he’s played with all these guys growing up so he fit right in.” The Arlington win capped off a three-game stretch that might have been the Huguenots’ first big test of the season. In the span of four days, New Rochelle took on—and beat—three solid Class AAA foes including then-unbeaten White Plains, North Rockland, and Arlington. Young said that it was a chance for his group to begin to figure out who they were. “This was a big week

starting with White Plains, looking at those teams it was like ‘wow’,” he said. “But if these guys think they’re getting off tomorrow just because we won three

in a row, we’re going to be right back at it tomorrow.” The Huguenots will close out the 2023 calendar year with a trip upstate to play in a tournament in Elmira, NY., and will be back in action after New Years with a highly-anticipated test against league foe Scarsdale. The Raiders are currently 3-1, with their only loss coming against national powerhouse Stepinac. Scarsdale upset Mount Vernon for the Class AA title last year, and while the Huguenots and Raiders are no longer in the same playoff pool due to re-classification, this January matchup will still be an important one for New Rochelle. “We’re working hard but we know we still have a long way to go,” said Young. “We’re still trying to figure a few things out and continue to get better.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
