Emelin Theatre receives $25K grant from state Emelin Theatre for the Performing Arts announced a grant award totaling $25,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the nonprofit arts and culture sector. Through New York State’s continued investment in arts and culture, NYSCA has awarded over $80 million since spring 2023 to more than 1,500 artists and organizations across the state. Gov. Kathy Hochul said, “Research confirms what we’ve always known here in New York: arts and culture are a powerhouse, with a staggering return on investment for our economy and our communities. Nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences generated

$151.7 billion in economic activity nationwide in 2022 and New York’s unparalleled arts and culture sector is leading the way to benefit our residents, our students and our visitors every day. I commend these grantees on their achievements and look forward to their contributions in the coming year.” NYSCA Chair Katherine Nicholls added, “Thanks to the unwavering support of Governor Hochul and our Legislature, NYSCA is so proud to support the work of organizations and artists from all across New York. Spanning the entire breadth of the arts and culture sector – from world-renowned performers to after-school programs, from long established museums to community

arts collectives – these organizations and artists together are a powerful driver of health, tourism, economy and education for our residents and visitors. On behalf of Council and staff, congratulations to the Emelin Theatre and thank you for your perseverance, your creativity and your tireless service to New York State.” Emelin President Mark Ettenger stated, “NYSCA is the critical catalyst for the arts and the cultural powerhouse in NY. We are grateful for NYCSA’s grant and for Governor Hochul and the legislature’s focus on and support of the arts in New York State. The Emelin is committed to serving its region and to NYSCA’s vision for the arts.”

Latimer advocates for study on Penn Station access study Westchester County Executive George Latimer is taking proactive steps to address the transportation needs of the region, as outlined in a letter addressed to Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Janno Lieber, Latimer is calling for a study to have the Hudson Line have direct one seat access to Manhattan’s Penn Station. In his letter, Latimer said: “The advantages of such a connection are abundant. Improved transportation links would not only further ease congestion but also foster economic growth, enhance accessibility to job opportunities, and contribute to the overall quality of life for residents in Westchester County, the Bronx and beyond.” Expressing his continued support for the progress made with West Side Access on the New Haven Line, which links Metro North’s New Haven Line service with four new Bronx Stations into Manhattan’s Penn Station on the West Side, Latimer said it is time for a parallel initiative on the Hudson River side of Metro North. According to statistics from the MTA provided in its 2022 overview, the Hudson Line’s ridership rose 56.7% from 2021 with approximately 3.6 million more rides. The total annual East of Hudson (Harlem Line, Hudson Line and New Haven Line) ridership was approximately 48 million, approximately 17.9 million more rides than the 30.1 million for 2021. These increased ridership numbers show a serious appetite for greater access to MTA trains. Latimer wants the MTA to undertake a comprehensive

study to evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits of establishing West Side Access from Westchester and the Bronx on the Hudson Line to Penn Station. The existing Amtrak line in the corridor presents a strategic opportunity to leverage the infrastructure for the benefit of the communities along the Hudson River. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said: “As the fastest growing big city in New York State and the gateway to the Hudson Valley, Yonkers support Westchester County’s quest to expand transportation access to the metropolitan area. I commend County Executive Latimer for advocating for our residents and businesses that will result in economic growth and improved quality of life. Together, we can make access to Penn Station a reality.” Yonkers City Councilwoman and Majority Leader Tasha Diaz said: “As the Majority leader and Councilwoman representing a large portion of the West side of Yonkers it is imperative that we make it easier for people to commute by public transportation. Yonkers would greatly benefit by having direct access to Penn Station. Access to public transportation should be efficient and easily accessible for the residents of Yonkers. The MTA must do their job in growing public transportation initiatives throughout Westchester.” Westchester County Legislator Shanae Williams said: “I support County Executive Latimer and all my colleagues in government in calling on the MTA to conduct a study for the Hudson Line to have direct one seat access to Manhattan Penn Station.”

County board welcomes new legislators On Nov. 7, 2023, three new Legislators were elected to represent Westchester residents in County Legislative Districts 9, 10, and 16. Legislator Emiljana Ulaj (D - Cortlandt, Ossining, Croton, Briarcliff, Buchanan), Legislator Judah Holstein (D - Eastchester, New Rochelle, Tuckahoe), and Legislator Shanae Williams (D – Yonkers) were officially sworn in at the Board’s Organizational meeting on Monday, Jan. 8, along with the 14 current legislators. Legislator Emiljana Ulaj said, “”Public service and government is about creating the conditions for residents to thrive and self-actualize. Every step we take, every priority we advance, will be done with that goal in mind. As an immigrant and a refugee, the weight of the responsibility of this role is never lost on me. I look forward to working together with my County Legislative colleagues--For The People.” Ulaj and her family fled Albania in 1997 in the midst of a civil war. After nearly a year spent as refugees, the family emigrated to the United States where they were granted asylum. Today, Ulaj works as a union organizer for New York State United Teachers (NYSUT),

the union that gave her family so much. Having worked as a hands-on public advocate, staff member for the New York State Senate, and currently as a union organizer, Emiljana looks forward to advocating for others on the County Board of Legislators. She is a graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River and Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. Her work history includes serving as Director of Communications & Strategic Planning for State Senator Shelley B. Mayer, Communications Specialist for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32BJ, and Regional Political Organizer for NYSUT. Legislator Judah Holstein said, “I have always been a fair and objective listener, helping people understand different viewpoints and bringing people together. People appreciate being heard and being treated with respect, even in a disagreement. I look forward to representing District 10 and working with my colleagues at the Board of Legislators to find effective solutions to the challenges we all face.” Holstein is a lifelong District 10 resident and a graduate of Iona College. He was raised in the Bonnie Crest neigh-

borhood of New Rochelle.. Judah and his family live in Eastchester, where his three children all attended public school. Judah began his career as a respected software developer in the corporate world, and founded his small software company, Miracom Computer Corp., in 1995. He has a long history of community involvement, including three terms on the Eastchester School Board beginning in 2013, where he worked to ensure the best possible public education through advocacy, vision, communication, and balance. Legislator Shanae Williams said, “I am honored to represent the 16th district and look forward to working on issues that matter most to my constituents, including housing, quality of life, and mental health. As an immigrant from a big family, I have always looked to understand different perspectives and bring people together.” Williams was born in Jamaica, immigrated to Yonkers as a child, and attended the Westchester public school system. Williams holds a Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York at Albany and holds the highest GPA Award for the Class of 2011 in

the Department of Sociology. Williams interned and then served in the New York State Assembly. Upon graduating from college, Shanae worked full-time at the Office of the Mayor of Yonkers. She obtained her Master of Business Administration with a focus in Leadership from Walden University in 2015. Williams was appointed to the Yonkers City Council on January 1, 2018 and subsequently elected to the Council in 2019, where she represented the First Council District.

During the afternoon of April 8, 2024, a total eclipse will encompass parts of New York state. In less than 15 minutes within a 3:15 to 3:30 window, the moon will pass between the earth and sun, turning day into night for 1½ minutes to 3½ minutes.

State prepares for April’s total solar eclipse

With less than 100 days to go before the State’s first total eclipse in nearly a century, Gov. Kathy Hochul updated New Yorkers and the State’s expected hundreds of thousands of visitors on its plans to ensure a safe, enjoyable and awe-inspiring experience. “Whether you live in New York or are visiting to witness this generational spectacle, ensuring everyone can take in this year’s eclipse safely is our top priority,” Governor Hochul said. “I encourage everyone to keep safety in mind so that all can savor this experience and make memories to last a lifetime. Come for the eclipse, but stay for New York and enjoy all our great state has to offer.” During the afternoon of April 8, 2024, a total eclipse will encompass the western and northern parts of New York State. In less than 15 minutes within a 3:15 to 3:30 window, the moon will pass between the earth and sun, turning day into night for 1 ½ minutes to 3 ½ minutes. The roughly 100-mile wide path of totality will enter in the southwestern part of the state at just after 3:15 PM, and will depart northern New York just before 3:30. Cities and towns within this path include Jamestown, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Old Forge, Lake Placid and Plattsburgh. The entire event will last for up to 2 ½ hours, marking the time the sun is first obstructed to the last moments when the moon’s shadow is cast. For other areas of the state that are outside the path, there will still be quite a celestial spectacle. The minimum coverage in the state will be on Long Island, with the sun being shadowed at 88 percent there. New York City will see 89 percent coverage with 96 percent in the Capital Region. For the last 15 months, an interagency task

force, comprised of nearly two dozen state agencies and authorities, has been collaborating on plans to ensure a safe and memorable viewing experience for New York State’s residents and visitors. It is focused on building awareness of the State as a prime location to experience the eclipse by gathering important safety and preparedness information, amplifying and supporting region-specific viewing activities, and maintaining regular communication with local governments and municipalities, especially those within the path of totality. New York’s public safety efforts align with the State’s normal jurisdictional role over State parks and State roads and support to local governments in their planning and decision making in accordance with their own codes, laws and needs as this exciting event approaches. Public safety challenges for such an event include traffic management, communications capabilities and public health and safety. State, county and local public safety and emergency management efforts have been and will continue to be tailored to the anticipated needs from an influx of those who come to view the eclipse from both inside and outside the state. The state’s goals surrounding the eclipse are to provide a safe, fun and enjoyable experience from start to finish. Alongside the focus on public safety is the promotion of New York State as an eclipse vacation destination. With so much to do and see in the path of totality, New York State and I LOVE NY are encouraging eclipse viewers to extend an eclipse viewing trip into a full vacation for a more enjoyable experience all around – including avoiding post-event traffic, like the massive backups after the Great Eclipse of 2017,

which bisected the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. April 8, 2024—and the days leading up to and following—mark an important opportunity to showcase New York State’s splendor from its parks and attractions to its quaint towns and landscapes. I LOVE NY has launched the multi-platform “Come for the Eclipse, Stay for New York” campaign to present New York as THE place to be to witness this event. The campaign and a special eclipse website highlight viewing location information in the five regions that will experience the path of totality, a variety of attractions and special eclipse-related events happening across the state, and safety best practices across digital platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter/X, email newsletters, and digital displays in various highly trafficked locations across the state such as the Moynihan Train Hall and regional welcome centers. The website also includes resources for educators, families and kids, along with photos and frequently asked questions about solar eclipses. Visitors can download a special edition eclipse poster, created through an I LOVE NY partnership with acclaimed artist and professional astronomer Dr. Tyler Nordgren to help promote and commemorate the eclipse. As this once-in-a-lifetime event approaches, meetings and briefings will continue with agencies and governments across the state to continue preparation. In addition, the Governor’s office will be providing updates on relevant milestones and features to keep New Yorkers and its visitors informed on how to best prepare, be safe and enjoy the eclipse.

The call of the County Center It doesn’t matter if it’s the Section 1 finals or a random showcase in January, there’s just something special about seeing a basketball game at the Westchester County Center. On Jan. 5 and 6, a number of local teams were in action on the grandest stage in the area, participating in Stepinac’s Crusader Classic/Slam Dunk Showcase. And while there were several takeaways from the weekend, the main one is this; I can not wait for that week in March when the best squads in the section duke it out in the historic venue. There’s a certain energy you can find in the County Center that makes it a unique spot to catch a high school game, and honestly, it’s tough to put a finger on exactly

what it is. Sure the layout helps; between the two-tiered seating, the massive scoreboards and graphic displays and the pulsing music that blares during breaks in the action, it’s a decidedly professional setting for a high school contest. But that’s not exactly the entire story, either. In many ways, it’s the history of the County Center and what the venue represents to high school hoopers that make it what it is. Kids today might not know every historic moment that has transpired in the County Center over the course of its long run as the home of the Section 1 semifinals and finals, but that doesn’t really matter in the end; when they step on the court there, no matter the scenario, they can’t help but feel connected to the illustrious past of the arena. And you can see it in the way they play. Stepping on to that floor is not a right, it’s a privilege, one that the

majority of Section 1 basketball players won’t get to experience during their high school careers. And the result of that is when they are given the opportunity, be it in the playoffs or in a regular season showcase, they’re eager to make the most of it. We saw it this weekend as, to a team, each squad that set foot on that floor treated their game like it was the Section 1 finals. Now, it helped that a number of the teams in action, like Mamaroneck’s boys and the girls from Harrison and Rye, have a legit chance to find themselves back at the County Center come March. They used this weekend as something of a dress rehearsal, a chance to shake off some of those County Center jitters before they—hopefully—take the court there in their respective semifinal rounds. But one thing I’ve noticed is that no matter how seasoned a team is, the thrill of getting the chance to

shine at the County Center never quite goes away. Those jitters are there for a reason. And they’ll be in the mix—for

everyone—come March for sure. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Game Notes • Dean Kim & Ivan Vasyuta scored twice • Rye had 3 3rd period goals • Owen Fitzgibbons made 18 saves

It’s a rare situation when both Rye and Mamaroneck take the ice against each other with both teams desperately seeking a win to right their respective ships. But such was the case on Wednesday night, when the Garnets and Tigers squared off with just six victories between them. But in the end, it was the explosive output of the Garnets that proved the difference-maker, as Rye fended off a hearty challenge from the visitors to hand Mamaroneck a 6-2 loss. The Garnets got things going early on, getting goals from Ivan Vatsuya and Dean Kim to jump out to a 2-0

lead in the first period, but Mamaroneck battled back in the second, getting an evenstrength score from Jony Dobkin and a power play goal Matt Studdert to pull within one. Rye’s momentum was stifled a bit by penalties, as the Garnets were short-handed quite often in the game, something head coach Peter Thomas said his squad needs to work on. “We’re always telling them that every time they take a penalty, they’re reducing our chances of winning by like three or four percent,” said Thomas. “If you continually take undisciplined penalties and let a team hang around, it’s going to bite you, and for a while, Mamaroneck was knocking on the door.” But despite the penalties, Rye—led by 18 saves from Owen Fitzgibbons—was able to turn away a number of Mamaroneck chances and got third-period goals from Seth Dorfman, Henry Bagley and another from Vasyuta to pull away with the 6-2 win. “It seemed like we had the momentum but we couldn’t capitalize on a 5-on-3 and then they got another goal and that took the wind out of

our sails,” said Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli. With the loss, Mamaroneck fell to 3-12 on the year, with the majority of those losses coming against non-Section 1 teams. Rye, on

the other hand, improved to 4-5. Thomas said the stretches of inspired play from his team should provide the Garnets a blueprint for what it takes in order to compete against the top area teams

moving forward. “When we execute the stuff we practice, we can look dominant, and we will have extended periods where we are controlling the puck in the other team’s zone,”

he said. “But sometimes we fall into bad habits; we really need to just stick to our game and not deviate from that.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
