Hochul encourages New Yorkers to make winter energy plan Gov. Kathy Hochul encouraged New Yorkers on Friday, Nov. 17 to prepare now to keep their homes and businesses warm heading into winter. Multiple New York State agencies and authorities offer programs that can help residents manage energy use, reduce electric and heating bills, and increase comfort during cold temperatures by weatherizing and making these buildings more energy efficient. Hochul also reminded the State’s utilities and fuel providers to ensure there are adequate reserves and communication with customers to meet peak winter demand. “As the weather gets colder, New York State is prepared to assist residents and businesses in managing their energy use, maximizing energy efficiency, and understanding the resources available in case of extreme weather,” Governor Hochul said. “As consumers undertake their own planning, utilities and fuel suppliers should strategize now to meet consumer needs and enhance communication to reduce unexpected service interruptions and respond to emergencies.” New Yorkers can take advantage of programs offered through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Department of Public Service (DPS), Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Service that provide assistance to keep families, particularly those of low-or-moderate income warm during the times of the year when energy

consumption may be high. New York State programs offer funding and technical assistance that can assist homeowners, renters, and businesses manage their energy needs. This includes: • Apply for HEAP. As of Nov. 1, applications are being accepted for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) which can provide up to $976 to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size and how they heat their home (e.g., family of four with a maximum monthly gross income of $5,838 can qualify). • Energy Affordability Program/Low Income Bill Discount Program. This program provides income-eligible consumers with a discount on their monthly electric and/or gas bills, as well as other benefits, depending on the characteristics of the particular utility’s program. New Yorkers can be enrolled automatically if they receive benefits from a government assistance program. • Community-based Service Programs. Service organizations and local community agencies provide financial aid, counseling services and assistance with utility emergencies. New Yorkers can contact organizations like the American Red Cross (800733-2767), Salvation Army (800-728-7825), and United Way (2-1-1 or 888-774-7633) to learn more. • Take immediate action to be more energy efficient. NYSERDA offers energy saving tips for residents and homeowners, as

United Hebrew named a 2024 Best Nursing Home: report Rita Mabli, president and CEO of United Hebrew, a leading senior care campus in New Rochelle, announced that its skilled nursing facility has been recognized as a 2024 Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report for both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, placing it among the nation’s best. U.S. News evaluated more than 15,000 facilities nationally on an array of patient and resident outcomes including care, safety, infection rates, staffing levels and health inspections. Only 19% of skilled nursing facilities across the nation achieved this coveted designation. “We take great pride and feel deeply honored to achieve this ranking, a recognition that underscores the dedication and hard work of our committed staff in delivering high-quality care to our residents,” stated Mabli. “Navigating the search for a professional and reputable skilled nursing home can be a daunting task. This acknowledgment offers families essential guidance during the decision-making process.” Nursing homes recognized by US News & World Report achieve better outcomes. The U.S. News data shows that facilities earning the highest-performing rating achieve the following:

Thousands of businesses and nonprofits are making energy-efficient upgrades to save. Will you join them? Con Edison’s Small-Medium Business program helped Foodtown of Prospect Heights upgrade lighting and refrigeration equipment by covering $97,000 of the total $139,000 cost - saving them $69,000 on the next year’s electricity bill! Explore your incentive options at: coned.com/smallbusiness

-28% fewer emergency department visits -14% fewer hospital readmissions -27% fewer infection control-related hospitalizations -44% higher rate of successful discharge to the community -57% fewer major falls In addition to this latest recognition by U.S. News & World Report, United Hebrew recently made Newsweek’s list of 2023-2024 Best Nursing Homes. Mabli attributes these recognitions to its committed expert staff members who are dedicated to helping seniors lead vibrant lives with purpose. Says Mabli, “Our compassionate and highly-trained staff truly care about our seniors, and that is what sets us apart.” To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Methodology factors in data such as data on resident care, safety, outcomes, nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing ER and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also includes measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well they were staffed on weekends.

Latimer honors service members at Veterans Day ceremony Graphic Designer | Design2pro

Westchester County paid tribute on Wednesday to the nation’s service members, past and present, who have sacrificed to preserve our liberty.

Westchester County paid tribute on Wednesday to the nation’s service members, past and present, who have sacrificed to preserve our liberty. Westchester County Executive George Latimer and Veterans Service Agency Director Ron Tocci hosted the County’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the County’s Veteran’s Museum at Lasdon Park in Katonah. The pair were joined for the special occasion by Timothy J. Collmer, U.S. Army veteran and American Legion Department of New York Commander. The American Legion, founded in the aftermath of World War I, is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Earlier this year, the County hosted the American Legion Department of New York Conven-

tion, the first time the convention was held in the downstate area in decades. The Wednesday ceremony kicked of ceremonies throughout Westchester culminating on Veterans Day itself, Nov. 11 -- coinciding historically with the World War I armistice with Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918. County Executive George Latimer said: “Whether they serve in times of peace or times of conflict, the men and women of our military form the bedrock of our democracy. They preserve our liberty in times of peril; and they stand as an example of sacrifice, duty, honor and service to a greater good that should inspire us all. In our busy lives it can be too easy to forget that behind our freedom to speak our minds,

to worship as we choose, to take a political or social stand, are men and women willing to give all to protect those freedoms. But we must never take that sacrifice and service for granted.” Veterans Service Agency Director Ron Tocci said: “In the nearly 250-year history of our great country, millions have been called to serve. That seems like a large number, but in fact it’s truly a select few. Our liberty rests on the shoulders of these brave and selfless men and women. We all rely on their dedication and sacrifice, and that’s why it’s important today and every day that we show them our appreciation. But we have to do more than just thank them for their service. We must let them know that we will always be here for them, like they were here for us.”

THE REVIEW • November 24, 2023 • 15

Winter already? No matter how on top of things we might like to think we are, sometimes stuff just slips between the cracks. I was reminded of that this week, as I was reviewing my weekend sports schedule—heading to Middletown for the New York State Football Semifinals—before I was shook by another realization. The winter sports season is already here. I had been so focused on all things football for the last few weeks, I didn’t even realize it was happening. But sure enough, I looked at the game schedules for the week and was startled to see a heaping of games on the menu, from season kick-off hockey tournaments to some promising early-season basketball showdowns. I’m honestly astounded it snuck up on me like that. I’ve been doing this job long enough to know that Thanksgiving week is generally the soft-open to the winter

season; with the last few football teams heading up to states, other teams are in the gyms and the rinks getting started on the upcoming campaigns. But for whatever reason—maybe an early Thanksgiving or general air-headedness—it just didn’t compute that I was going to be trading in the field for the gyms this week. Not that I’m complaining. I looked at the game-time weather for Saturday afternoon’s Class B semifinal matchup and was less than excited to see the temperatures sitting in the 20s. At this time of year, it’s always better to be covering games in a toasty gym than a frostbitten upstate field. So here we are; I’ve got one—maybe two—football games left to cover this year and then it’s a full “go” on winter sports. And that’s exciting! There are few things quite like covering a closely contested basketball game in a packed high school gymnasium, or a bitter rivalry matchup late on a Wednesday night at Playland or Hommocks. There’s an immediacy to the crowd’s reactions that you

don’t tend to get except for at the wildest games in the fall or spring. So yeah, I’m pumped for the winter season. There are more than enough talented teams in our coverage area with realistic shots at deep playoff runs to make each game feel like it truly matters. Can Harrison’s girls get back to the

County Center? Will Mamaroneck’s hockey team have a bounce back year? At this point in the season, everything is on the table. And that’s something worth being thankful for. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Garnets down Port Jervis with balanced attack By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Football

Game Notes • AJ Miller threw for two touchdowns • Four Garnets found the end zone • Rye will play Section 2 Ravena on 11/25

One local team moved one step closer to a trip to Syracuse last weekend, as the Rye football team emerged victorious over Section 9’s Port Jervis in the Class B Regional Finals, beating the Raiders 28-14 to advance to the state semifinals. Taking on the Raiders at Goshen High School, Rye utilized nearly all of its offensive weapons to keep Port Jervis off-balance, jumping out to a 21-0 victory and firmly establishing control of the game. But whereas last week’s Section 1 final win over Pleasantville was a showcase for the Rye running game, Saturday’s

performance showed just how many ways the Garnets can beat a team. Quarterback AJ Miller threw for 186 yards and two scores, on a day where each Garnet touchdown was recorded by a different player. Miller said that the versatility has long been a strength for this group. “Last week, Chris [Iuliano] carried the ball something like 38 times, today we threw the ball more,” said Miller. “You just never know what’s coming.” Defensively, the Garnets were solid, pitching a three-quarter shutout before the Raiders were able to find the end zone late in the game. Defensive back Ameer White chalked up the Garnets’ play to masterful preparation and attention to detail. “We came in with a game plan, knowing exactly what we wanted to do,” said White. “We knew Port Jervis was a good team, that they had some guys who could hurt you, so we just tried to take that away.” With the win, the Garnets will move on to play against Section 2 Ravena in the Class B semifinals on Nov. 25 at Middletown High School. ranked No. 3 in New York State and is coming off a big regional win against Peru that saw them explode in the second half en route to a 42-7 victory. Rye is one of four Section 1 teams still alive in the state

tournament, as Haldane, Somers and Carmel all won their regional championship contests this past weekend. Class C Bronxville fell in their bid to reach the semifinals, however, losing to O’Neil at Mahopac High

School. For the Garnets, the chance to continue their run into late November has been a blessing, explained White. “Obviously you never know what’s going to happen, you don’t make

predictions at the beginning of the year,” he said. “But we thought we could be in this spot and we’re just going to continue to work hard.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
