Hochul announces $5M for mental health workers loan program Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday a $5 million expansion of the Community Mental Health Loan Repayment Program to extend eligibility to licensed mental health professionals. Administered by the state Office of Mental Health, the program now has $14 million dedicated to recruiting and retaining skilled mental health professionals at a time when demand for these workers is high and projected to increase. “Our efforts to improve New York’s continuum of mental health care are dependent on having the trained professionals needed to undertake this critical work,” Hochul said. “This loan repayment program will provide the incentive needed to attract new workers or retain existing professionals to address staffing shortages and meet unmet demand statewide.” The Community Mental Health Loan Repayment Program provides up to $120,000 for psychiatrists and $30,000 for other mental health professionals

to repay qualified education loans and student debt, provided they remain employed by licensed community mental health programs for three years. The expanded program extends eligibility to include many other licensed mental health professionals, including master and clinical social workers; mental health counselors; marriage and family therapists; creative arts therapists, psychoanalysts, and psychologists. Governor Hochul added $5 million to the existing pool of funding as part of her $1 billion plan to improve New York State’s continuum of mental health care, bringing total program funding to $14 million. The additional funding will support 500 awards, including 200 set aside to improve workforce diversity. Up to 100 awards are reserved for individuals working in settings providing diversity, equity, and inclusion services, such as cultural or linguistic specialization, and 100 awards will be set aside for professionals working in priority settings,

such as school-based clinics. Established in 2022, the program initially provided $9 million in loan repayment funding for psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners, with eligibility extended to psychiatric physician’s assistants in May. During the initial round of awards, roughly $3.4 million in loan repayments were issued for more than 200 psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. New York State Office of Mental Health Commissioner Dr. Ann Sullivan said, “Growing the mental health workforce in our state is an integral part of our efforts to extend services to more New Yorkers, including those from traditionally marginalized populations. By expanding this loan repayment program, we can address existing shortages and begin to build out the workforce of tomorrow as we continue to implement Governor Hochul’s landmark plan to build the continuum of mental health care in New York State.”

Cerebral Palsy of Westchester (CPW) and Sen. Shelley Mayer announced today that CPW has been awarded $150,000 in state funding, secured by Senator Mayer, to construct The BRIDGE Training Center. CPW will use the funding to make modifications and renovations to an existing 1,500 square-foot house on its campus in Rye Brook. Once renovated, the building will house a new program: The BRIDGE Training Center. The Center will offer work-based learning and life skills to CPW’s high school and adult clients. The BRIDGE Training Center will offer CPW ways to expand training partnerships with current community partners, bring in new partners, and will provide opportunities for individuals in the local area not currently served by CPW but who could benefit from a vocational and life-skills training center such as this. The Training Center program aims to serve hundreds of individuals who, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are among the most marginalized in the world – teens and young adults with disabilities. With societal and other barriers, these young people face numerous challenges in transitioning to adulthood and learning to live independently. Mayer said, “I am proud to secure $150,000 in state funding to construct the BRIDGE Training Center for Cerebral Palsy of Westchester. This training center will provide tremendous support and resources to Cerebral Palsy of Westchester’s high school

and adult clients, helping them face the challenges in transitioning to living independently. I thank Linda Kuck, the Executive Director of CPW and her team for their commitment to ensuring teens and young adults with disabilities have opportunities and the resources they need to thrive.” Linda Kuck, CPW’s executive director, said, “This project addresses some of the most dire needs of our community. It has been a dream to convert this home into this life skills / vocational training center, which will enable us to meet these needs in an innovative way. The BRIDGE Training Center will remove barriers to independent living and full inclusion in society through individualized “real-world” life-skills and vocational training. In addition to having a high impact on beneficiaries’ lives, it will enable us to offer a whole new level of service and offers possibilities for our participants to work and give back to the local Rye Brook community.” Now in its 74th year, Cerebral Palsy of Westchester’s mission is to advance the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people living with developmental disabilities including autism, neurological impairments, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. Through a comprehensive network of educational programs, day services, residential sites, therapeutic services, employment training, recreation programs and advocacy, the agency helps thousands of children and adults in Westchester live more productive and satisfying lives.

Latimer honors service members at Veterans Day ceremony Graphic Designer | Design2pro

Westchester County paid tribute on Wednesday to the nation’s service members, past and present, who have sacrificed to preserve our liberty.

Westchester County paid tribute on Wednesday to the nation’s service members, past and present, who have sacrificed to preserve our liberty. Westchester County Executive George Latimer and Veterans Service Agency Director Ron Tocci hosted the County’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the County’s Veteran’s Museum at Lasdon Park in Katonah. The pair were joined for the special occasion by Timothy J. Collmer, U.S. Army veteran and American Legion Department of New York Commander. The American Legion, founded in the aftermath of World War I, is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Earlier this year, the County hosted the American Legion Department of New York Convention, the first time

the convention was held in the downstate area in decades. The Wednesday ceremony kicked of ceremonies throughout Westchester culminating on Veterans Day itself, Nov. 11 -- coinciding historically with the World War I armistice with Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918. County Executive George Latimer said: “Whether they serve in times of peace or times of conflict, the men and women of our military form the bedrock of our democracy. They preserve our liberty in times of peril; and they stand as an example of sacrifice, duty, honor and service to a greater good that should inspire us all. In our busy lives it can be too easy to forget that behind our freedom to speak our minds, to worship as we

choose, to take a political or social stand, are men and women willing to give all to protect those freedoms. But we must never take that sacrifice and service for granted.” Veterans Service Agency Director Ron Tocci said: “In the nearly 250-year history of our great country, millions have been called to serve. That seems like a large number, but in fact it’s truly a select few. Our liberty rests on the shoulders of these brave and selfless men and women. We all rely on their dedication and sacrifice, and that’s why it’s important today and every day that we show them our appreciation. But we have to do more than just thank them for their service. We must let them know that we will always be here for them, like they were here for us.”

LUW announces 7th Annual Student Essay Contest Lifting Up Westchester, a non-profit agency committed to helping individuals experiencing homelessness and hunger achieve self-sufficiency, announces their seventh annual high school student essay contest. Open to all students attending school in Westchester in the 7th to 12th grades, this year’s contest is called Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes, because we are asking students to learn about the different programs offered by Lifting Up Westchester and to write a narrative about someone who accessed and benefited from one of those programs. As students write their story, we are asking them to think about whether this individual or family experienced implicit bias as they sought help. The student’s story can be inspired by real events, such as someone they know, have seen in school, in their community or in their travels. Alternatively, the story can come from the student’s imagination. The essay contest was established in 2017 in memory of Beth Massey Rubens, a lifelong teacher, tutor, and mentor who had a love for language arts. “Many individuals have preconceived ideas, even an implicit bias, about what a homeless individual looks like, who might

need food from a ‘soup kitchen,’ why some children need extra tutoring and mentoring or why some individuals need help in finding employment,” said Anahaita Kotva, CEO of Lifting Up Westchester. “By inviting students to spend time ‘walking in someone else’s shoes,’ we hope to dispel some of the myths and stereotypes associated with the men, women, children and families we serve.” First, second and third place cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three grade groups: 7th and 8th, 9th and 10th, and 11th and 12th. First prize in each category is $500, second prize is $250 and third prize is $100. The contest kicks off November 6, and students can enter until February 16, 2024, at 5 p.m. Students can enter the contest through the dedicated portal and upload their essays here. Winners will be announced in early March 2024 and an awards ceremony will take place April 14, 2023. Students, teachers, and parents can learn more about how the contest works and review the judging process and criteria by visiting Lifting Up Westchester’s website. Open Door to continue cancer screenings Open Door Family Medical Center has received a new grant from New York State Department of Health to continue to cover the cost of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings for eligible patients over the next five years as part of the New York State Cancer Services Program (CSP). Over the past five years, Open Door has provided these services through CSP to an estimated 6,000 patients a year who live in New York State, meet age requirements and lack health insurance or who have health insurance that would make the cost of cancer screenings and diagnostic services prohibitive. The screenings include: for cervical cancer, a pap test and pelvic exam for women ages 40 and older; for breast cancer, a mammogram and clinical breast exam for women ages 40 and older and those younger with a high risk for breast cancer; for colorectal cancer, an at-home Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) Kit for those 45 and older and a colonoscopy for those at increased or higher risk or whose lab findings from the FIT kit test are abnormal. Those patients who are diagnosed with cancer can be enrolled by CSP staff in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program or Emergency Medicaid for coverage of care. “Early diagnosis is key,” said Sara Hodg-

don, Director of CSP Operations at Open Door. “Colorectal and cervical cancers can be prevented with early screenings and with breast cancer, early diagnosis often results in far better outcomes.” Open Door’s Patient Advocates and Patient Navigators assist patients through the screening process by helping with CSP enrollment paperwork, scheduling appointments, securing transportation to appointments and coordinating care between the medical providers involved. The new five-year CSP program will reach out to specific populations with higher rates of cancer. This includes the LGBTQ+ community. The New York State Cancer Services Program grant will continue to be administered by Hudson Information Technology for Community Health (HITCH), the organization created by Open Door through partnerships with two other Federally Qualified Health Centers in the Lower Hudson Valley, Sun River Health and the Institute for Family Health. Coverage is available through CSP of the Hudson Valley for eligible individuals residing in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties. Other CSP programs throughout the state provide coverage for residents of other counties.

The Finals Countdown The weather has turned, the first day of winter practices is scheduled for Monday, and hockey and basketball teams are beginning to post their upcoming schedules on social media platforms. But that doesn’t mean the fall season is quite wrapped up for Section 1 teams. In fact, for some teams, the biggest weekend of the year is finally upon us. On Friday and Saturday, the top football teams in the area will descend upon Arlington High School for Section 1 supremacy. 10 squads, five games, and two days of great football action? It’s a sports fans dream. And with four teams left in the mix for our Review papers, suffice it to say my weekend

will be a busy one. Harrison, Rye, Bronxville and Tuckahoe will shoot their shots this weekend and, to be honest, I can’t remember the last time our papers still had four teams left on the final weekend of the Section 1 season. But while this may be an exciting time for supporters in our coverage area, the matchups—while intriguing—are far from being surefire victories. Perhaps more unusual than having four teams in the finals is this fact; all four schools will be looking for revenge against a finals opponent that bested them during the regular season. In our first game, Tuckahoe and Haldane will square off—as is customary in Class D—but this time, the Blue Devils come in with a 21-13 win over the Tigers already in hand. Does it mean much? Probably not, as neither team

is quick to show off its entire repertoire in a September matchup, but it’s certainly worth looking at when it comes looking at Friday’s rematch. In Class C, Bronxville has pulled off an improbable turnaround, turning a one-win 2022 season into an appearance in the Section 1 title game. But their opponent will be undefeated Westlake, who topped the Broncos decisively in the final week of the regular season. But if sophomore running back Brian Formato continues to grind out the yards—and if Bronxville is adept at causing turnovers as they were last week—this one could have a different outcome. In Class B, the showdown that everyone figured would be the final pairing, Pleasantville vs. Rye, is, in fact, how things shook out. But the Rye team that will take the

field against the Panthers on Saturday is a far cry to the shorthanded bunch that lost to Pleasantville early in the year. The now-healthy Garnets have been on a heater and a deeper Rye team could cause problems for the reigning Class B champs. Finally, the Class A

matchup between Somers and Harrison figures to be a doozy. The Huskies have already shown the ability to slow down the fearsome Tuskers—holding them to six points in the first half of their late-September meeting—and are coming off an emotional come-from-behind victory

over Yorktown. Could these Huskies pull off an improbably upset over the perennial powerhouse? As is the case with all these games, we’ll find out this weekend. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Game Notes • Isabel Harvey scored 2 goals • Bowyn Brown and Charlotte Keenan both scored • Rye will play Lewiston-Porter on 11/10

On Saturday night, the Class A Section 1 champion Rye Garnets turned in yet another in a dominant performance to keep their season along, topping Section 9’s Our Lady of Lourdes in a 4-1 rout to advance to the state semifinals. The victory is the 20th of the year for the Garnets, who need just two more this coming weekend in order to end the season with a New York State championship. Rye controlled the ball throughout regulation, breaking through 26 minutes into the game when Charlotte Kennan followed her own rebound to give the

Garnets an early lead. But Lourdes was able to answer on a long counter run that ended with a goal by Jessica Gigliotti with just one minute left to go in the first half. Rye didn’t bat an eye, however, as Isabel Harvey scored two goals to kick off the second half before Bowyn Brown added an insurance goal late to help the Garnets advance. “We always talk about the next five minutes, so after that goal, we just continued to play our game and work towards getting the next goal,” said Harvey. “That mindset has definitely been a strength for us this year.” Rye coach Rich Savage said he knew that the the Warriors would be a tough nut to crack defensively, but said that the number of weapons Rye possesses came in handy. “We knew they were a strong defensive team with one player [Gigliotti] who could score from anywhere on the offensive end,” said Savage. “So I thought we did a really good job controlling that.” Harvey credited Rye’s preparation for team’s success against Lourdes and said she’s looking forward to an intense week of practice

as the team gets ready for its next challenge. “Playing these teams is definitely different than playing against Section 1 competition because we know all those teams really well,” said Harvey. “But [Coach]

Savage got tape, he got us ready for this game and we knew their strengths.” Next up for the Garnets is a showdown against Section 6 champion Lewiston-Porter on Nov. 10 at Cortland High School. A win in that game

will see Rye advance to the state championship game against the winner of Section 11’s Shoreham-Wading River and Section 3’s New Hartford on Sunday, Nov. 11. “We’re a confident team,

but we’re not arrogant,” said Harvey. “We take every team seriously and we’re going to work hard this week to get ready for the next test.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com

Maddy Walsh looks for an open teammate against Lourdes. The Garnets are currently 20-2 on the season.
